Ok so I am starting a Nid army and am going with a jungle theme.  I am doing dark red bodies and green carapase with yellow stripes.  The only problem is that the yellow stripes are coming out really poorly and so I want to ask if anyone has any advice on how to make striping patterns ( on bugs mainly) look good.

part one:if you can, dont use GW yellows.its by far one of the worst, try rackham or valejo.
part 2:undercoat the yellows with thinned out white and mix it up until your yellow is nice and clean.
part 2.2:thin out your yellow if its coming out thick and blotchy.a few, thin, semi transparent coats (that build up to a nice yellow) are better than one thick, bumpy and ugly one
part 3:try not to make too many colours, look at real bugs.most of them dont have such a variety of colours on them so try to keep it simple and effective.

My biggest problem is not with the technique of making the yellow look good, but rather a way to actually apply the markings to the carapace that looks good. (If that makes any sense.)

I think Clayman already said it best.

Look at real bugs.
If the markings on yours don't look "right", it's probably because they don't look "real"
