Image Description: The one on the left was a freebie in White Dwarf. The one on the right was from a late 1980s blister pack: one side of him is a fantasy warrior, the other a sci-fi robot.
I like the one on the right better. On Youtube, Commissar Gamza sometimes complains about new Chaos models being too busy - but the one on the left is from around 1993 and has 15 skull motifs on him. I've never painted a space marine before: but the one on the right has a more interesting concept.
These are the practice models before I start on the Space Crusade set, as I know I'll need to learn about layering to do all the power armour.
The bases I was happy with. Grano dust mixed with cheap gap filler mixed with black craft acrylic. Zenithal primed, then drybrushed with Vallejo Beige Brown, Sandy Brown, Buff.
