This is a stunning Sergeant, taking the minimalist approach (he is not covered in ridiculous amounts of Wargear!) combined with a few small, but telling details the back pack reinforces the Raven Guard connection, the Sternguard Bolter hints at the Sergeants past. A very sophisticated and mature model, i am a massive fan. (I am guessing you used a Gundam Highlighter on the Eagle back pack to get that nice effect?) |

The whole army is taking a very muted, toned down approach I think fits the RG quite nicely so the Sarge is an extension of that idea really, even his 'bling' is subdued :)
The backpack was actually done with straight GW Black Ink for the black lining, I couldn't fit my 0.5mm Micron Pen in deep enough to be effective. The white is FOundation Astronomicon Grey highlighted with Reaper Dragon white in a couple of thin layers to build up the highlights.
I have used Micron Pens to get a really dark black for many of the panel lines in the army though. If you look at the leg above the skull on his right knee you can see where I used the pen to give real contrast with the highlight surrounding the panel.
I've also replaced the lens on the bolter sight with a Greif lens that looks much better than my attempt to paint a lens which was letting the model down, you can see it in the full squad photo if you squint. |
