If anyone could enlighten me with some tips, I would be most appreciative. As I stated in the caption, this is my first attempt at painting and I am eager to get more aggressive to better myself as a artist. Please feel free to share tips and advice. |

The first thing you should take care is how you want tha final result appears. Take a look at RAFF's work and SON'S OF ORAR's (different styles but great effect). Do you prefer clean paintjob or consumed/rusted/dusted results? For using bright colours as red, yellow and so on it's better primering with white than black, and a second hand of the final colour is requested. Keep looking other work's to find your style. Have a good job. |

Im a fan of the darker styles. I dont really like the brighter reds, so the rusted and/or dusted is what I would like to aim for. Im not entirely sure how to do so though. I have been reading articles and watching videos online. Unfortunately I know nobody in my area that does this, except a buddy who is starting with me, so I can get any first hand knowledge. The one's I have been painting so far are just the one's that come in the citadel 40k paint kit, so I am just experimenting. I am waiting to paint my Assault on Black Reach after I learned a bit, especially waiting to paint the Blood Angels Battleforce until I know just that much more hehe. Anywho, I am posting 2 more mini's I painted after this guy. Advice is appreciated.

He looks very good if I may suggest maybe try some highlighting and low lighting to give your model a bit more life. There is a book out about painting space marines it might help give you some ideas. It looks like your off to a great start keep practicing.

Hehe Thank you! As for getting a book, I have seen it. However, I am broke as a joke currently. As soon as work picks up again, I plan on getting that book along with some other self help stuff. How do you suggest the highlighting and low lighting? I am like a sponge ready to soak up any advice possible. Advise away WorlGirl.

Well You can try a flash light to see where shadows would be if he was out in the light. You could start out with the darker color for example like a scab red then lightly dry brush on blood red on over it take care not to cover all of the darker color and try to keep lighter colors on the edges keep a wet paper towel or q tip to wipe some off if u put too much. try that and let me know its kind of hard to write it down. |

I think he is quite good for your first attempt and he is certainly very different to my own. Firstly I think he needs finishing, you need to do the base, it really completes a mini. Try and break up the bolter a bit even if you just make the clip black or something, at the moment it looks too flat and uniform. I like the weathered look you have gone for but try and be neat first, try and get the lines of the armour defined even if it is a simple black line along the armour seams before you go for the messy weathered stage again it will really help with the overall feel of the mini. I'm thinking particularly on the feet of this model. The eye lenses are another area to look at some other peoples styles, I actually like the look of your model with the dark and brooding eye area and had a more experienced painter have done it I would think yes great experiment but as you are new it seems like you just didn't get round to it or you didn't want to attempt it (by all means correct me if it was intentional) |

Haha to be honest It was a mix of both (the eyes that is). I didnt want to paint them green, since this was just a test subject, so I decided black was the way to go. However, I didnt know how else to paint it more black so I left it how it was. The base, I have yet to get around purchasing and of the grass or such, but I completely agree. I dont like the plain stand. I do like the idea of mixing up the gun a bit. I really didnt think of that, and I just figured to leave it "uniform" like you said. However on future models I have in mind some ways to mix it up. I also like the idea of a "weathered look" thats kinda the way I tried to make it, again I agree with you on defining the armor and making it a bit more neat. Once I pull out the Blood Angels Battleforce set, I will take more time and be much much more meticulous. I want them to be perfect haha. But it seems I am far far off from that. Thank you for your advice Reaper Man. Please feel free to offer more. |
