Image Description: This model was undercoated in black, so we had some work to do. First, 2 thin coats of "bone" were laid on the raised areas of the cloak, plume and tunic. Then dark versions of the base colors were applied, again 2 or 3 thin coats of red, mustard yellow and orange respectively.
Because the folds in the cloak were so deep I added a wash of agrax earthshade, on a water-wet brush, into the creases. One more super-thin coat of white on the top of the raised portions, just enough to make it look a little "chalky", then 3 medium-thin coats of a bright red paint to bring out the highlight.
The first coat was across the full width of the fold, using a wider #1 brush, the 2nd and 3rd coats were narrower, using a #0 brush.
Patience and paint consistency are the keys to this.
(Also, I am in New Hampshire, it's been in the 'teens lately, so I bumped up the thermostat in my workshop/office to 71 degrees from 67 - it made a real, noticeable difference in how the paint flowed and dried. |
