This is a poem Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto wrote for my wife's grandfather (if memory serves me correctly) in Japan. His signature is on the bottom left. It's hanging in their house in one of the rooms they use to entertain large groups of people/ have huge meals.
Yamamoto was from Nagaoka, the city where most of my wife's family grew up. They actually live in Washima village, but all the little villages got incorporated into the larger cities a few years back, so technically she lives in Nagaoka now as well.
I don't remember the whole story about how the family got this. From what I understand, my wife's grandfather, being the firstborn son of the family, was required to stay home from the war in order to take care of family (and probably crops, since this area of Japan is predominantly farmland).
