Image Description: The 5th Northumberland Foot were one of the British Army's veteran units who fought in the Peninsular War. Nicknamed the Fighting Fifth, they became acclaimed for their steadfast, tenacious fighting abilities and participated in the Peninsular War for it's entirety.
They would also earn the nickname 'Lord Wellington's Bodyguard' after fighting off a body of French cavalry many times their number whilst on duty as the headquarters guard. During the ensuing action at the Battle of El Boden, the 5th Foot became renowned for having launched a bayonet charge into the French cavalry, driving them back and recapturing a battery of Portuguese artillery. Reinforced by the 77th Foot and the 21st Portuguese Foot, this small body of men numbering no more than 1500 held off a French force of 40 squadrons of cavalry and 6 cannon reinforced by a full infantry division of 14 battalions. For three hours they retiring steadily towards the 3rd Division across ground favourable to the French cavalry, beating off cavalry charge after cavalry charge, all the while being shelled by the French artillery.
It was for this action that Wellington himself commended them, notifying their Army of the achievement as 'a memorable example of what can be done by steadiness, discipline, and confidence.' |
