General Lurz sent each of his champions in turn to die at Count Reiterberger's blade. When the last fell, and the General saw his death approaching, he turned and ran. The count, having little sympathy for cowardice, but nonetheless remembering something of his sense of humour, took the General as his own undying jester, and placed him atop a child's hobby horse where he could continue to lead his soldiery to battle. |
