it's obvious i'm new to the forum, so i'm going to guess this has been asked before, but has anyone ever tried to call the 1-800 number for rules questions GW has on thier website? if so, does it actually work?

Which country is that for?

I didn't think GW still took rules questions over the phone... but if they do, that number will put you through to one of the mail order guys, wearing a Rulzboy hat.

So don't expect the answer to actually count for much... Call them again with the same question and you'll likely get a different guy, and a different answer.

I can personally vouch that as good as the GW staff are, they do get it wrong sometimes. On a few occasions I have been quoted a rule that contradicts the rulebook or contradicts something another GW staff member has said.
Best thing is to ask several poeple the same thing until you get the same answer from the majority of poeple.
GW staff are only Human, (though I'm sure they employ a few goblins as managers)

Does GW still have that phone number in use?

I havent bought a WD in quite a long time, so I am in the closet there.

I have to concur with insaniak. Its not like they have a super secret rules FAQ they confer with to answer the questions, but through their own individual interpretation and judgement.

if youre a new player and need a quick question answered about the rules, especially if a game is in progress, it actually a great way to get through the problem.
In fact, I would say that it is better than rolling a D6 for the answer if you have a phone handy, as it makes GW work for their money (as well as keeping those trollz who answer the phones employed in light of recent staffing cuts).
But you should still go back to that rule after the game and come to an agreememnt on how to interpret them yourselves.. because really, its just as good as calling them to answer the question.

In other words, the Roolzboyz are good for quick questions that need an aswer on the fly. Take the asnswer they give you in such a way for what it is worth.

Yes, the number is still in use. The hours are 11-7:30, Mon-Sat, EST.

Bear in mind that the Direct Services staff ( trollz are long gone), while they do have intra-department discussions on the rules, may give you a different ruling on the same question, based on how you ask the question. Oftentimes someone calls up and tries to troll for an the answer they want, so they change how they ask the question and of course, a different question is given.

Contrary to popular belief, GWUS has not had layoffs or jobcuts. In fact, they are hiring for a variety of positions.

While they may give a different answer regarding how you ask a question, its been proven that they will give a different answer even if you ask the same exact question.

Not sure about nowadays, as its been many years since I have bothered with asking them to clarify a rule. Largely, this is due to consistency.

Even if they did manage to get a good consistency with their rulings, it will take many years to remove the stigma of  "Roolzboyz roolings = ork poo-doo".
