Damnatus is now ready! I have been keeping an eye on the site off and on for a while. There has been an update, in German language only as of yet.

Damnatus is to be premiered in Stuttgart, news out as of 1st May. I am pleased as punch to see they have finished this, now unless GW get all stupid the English subtitles (or dub) are within reach. For a long while I thought the film would be abandoned.

If there is a German speaker here on Dakka please go to Damnatus.com and glean the rest of the information for us please. I for one would like to know more.

I have waited all of these years for Damnatus to be completed only for GW to lord its self over everything?

I am sickened, truly disgusted. Yeah, I am overreacting. but when you check the site every couple months for the last 4+ years, only to be delayed because of GW, it makes one very perturbed.

Unless someone else has the rights to do a GW movie, not sure why it would matter. But then I like the idea of free branding and advertising.

Well, seems like GW is killing off another good chance for free PR.....

Indeed. if GW cared that much about their image of fluff, then they sure as hell wouldnt let C.S. Goto near a typewriter.

Vergangenen Samstag konnte "DAMNATUS" nach fast vierjähriger Produktionszeit seine Premiere im Stuttgarter Delphi-Kino feiern. Zu der Aufführung waren Crewmitglieder, Schauspieler und diverse Gäste eingeladen.

Bezüglich der Veröffentlichung des Filmes gibt es derzeit leider immer noch kein grünes Licht von Seiten Games Workshops. Es tut uns sehr leid, aber es müssen nochmal einige rechtliche Dinge überprüft werden, erst dann dürfen wir ihn zum Download freigeben.

Maybe they've asked GW for a go-ahead as a courtesy but haven't heard back.
That's not exactly the same as GW stomping on thier ability to release the movie though it has the same end result.

Also it could just be that since they don't know where they stand they're being careful.
Still it doesn't prove any kind of malicious intent by GW.

The worrying thing is GW have a history of IP protectionism, as much as they have a history of plagiarism. They have in the past found mileage in thier own eyes in waiting until the most damaging moment to send out a cease & desist, or refusing to endorse etc in order to send out a wider message. They may well have been making positive noises up til now, in order to cause maximum damage later. This is intended to send out the message that GW will protect its IP.

What they may not think about is the serious loss of goodwill, and loss of advertising opportunity.

However we are jumping the gun here. On the other hand GW needs to look ast the ramifications of allowing the film to proceed without covering legal documentation. Though this should not take long.

If GW does stamp on this, I hope it gets leaked out anyway by the back door.

Oh you can be sure it will. In fact there was a incomplete version of the film that got leaked a couple yeears ago that was minus most of the CG and music score.

I hope GW allows this, because it WILL be seen by the masses. As was said in Serenity  "You cant stop the signal..."
It would be nice if the people who made it would get credit for it as opposed to being yet another pirate flavored download.

In spite of them paying Goto to wreck the fluff, maybe GW wants to review the movie carefully to see if it would be good or bad publicity for 40k. I remember the Dungeons and Dragons movie I was cozened into watching. I don't see how that would have enticed anyone into getting within a greatsword's length of playing the game, I think quite the opposite would have been true.

What, like the movie's portrayal of a couple of kids (dorks?) having a weird and awkward fantasy adventure isn't the norm in D&D?

Absolutely.  In fact, if you were to collect 2000 pts of every army, GW would immediately dispatch a strike team of lawyers with hammers to go to your house and smash all your models to bits.*

* But not your LotR models because that's not their IP.  This is why you're not allowed to make conversions that mix 40K/WHFB parts with LotR parts.

I have a question?  When dealing with GeeW and all their policy crap, do you feel like Milton and his "red stapler"?

We, the fans and gamers of GeeW's products, are Milton.  We love what GeeW has to offer, but we have to keep an eye out for Bill, cause he will take any good ideas, websites, fan made movies, etc. away from us.  Bill Lumbergh, aka GeeW, comes along and sees a good idea, aka "the red stapler', and says:

"Have you seen that 'good idea'?  There it is.  I'll take that. Yeah, that's it. Great."

Then all of the fans who wanted to enjoy/play/read that good idea are left with nothing.  So, all we can do is threaten to boycott, sell off our GeeW stuff, start a petition, go to another game system or something else.  But, in reality, all we do is shuffle around, accepting what has happened and mumble threats of burning down GeeW.

Sorry.  The wife and I just finished watching Office Space.

I think it is time to clarify some points. Even if my english is really bad...

I am one of the founders of the Damnatus-Crew (i came into the team 2 Months after the idea of a 10 minute short-film done in 3-weeks ^^).
My job was to build some of the costumes, props and weapons (for example the Techpriest is mostly done by me). So i´m pretty involved (is that right?) in the history of Damnfatus and the actual problems with Games Workshop.

The main problem is based on different copyright-laws between Germany and the United Kingdom. We Germans have some copyright-laws, which not exist in the UK. Especially there is a problem with the "Urheberrecht" which protects every kind of art in Germany.

Here is an example:
I create a painting with a bottle of coke in the middle of it. The bottle of coke is copyrighted by the coca-cola company, but (and here is the part of the german law) I have the "Urheberrecht" of the painting itself. I had the idea to create a painting like this. "Urheberrecht" doesn´t mean, that I am now the owner of the coca-cola bottle copyright (that would not work well ^^). But the coca-cola company isn´t even the owner of my painting-idea.

As far as I know there is no similar law in the UK, they only know copyright or no copyright.

You see the problem?
But we are working on a solution togehter with GW.

I was an AM at a WotC retail shop when that movie came out.  I saw it before my shift, walked into the shop and said to the Manager: "My God, they're going to close our store."  Luckily, I did not wear my work shirt to the movie . . . .
