This was the first scratchbuilt vehicle I've ever made for my new Ork Kult of Speed Army. I'm very proud of it - it took me three weeks to build with a lot of plasticard, glue, paint, and love.

Some of the smaller details I like to point out -

1) Spattered Tyranid Spore Mine - I went out and bought the Battle for Macragge boxed set for the terrain and ended up with some spore mines that I thought would be a neat embellishment for the front of the battlewagon. I added the grot with a stick and bucket who was sent out to clean it up, although I find it highly likely that a git like him'd be pokin at it hard enough to get it to blow up at any minute. I liked the idea of the spore mines

2) Impaled Ultramarine (?) - Orks consider the color blue to be lucky, and my orks were just thrilled when they found they picked up a hood ornament. They chained him in place and he's now become both a good luck charm for the wagon and an ominous sight for the enemy. He's made from a Macragge marine, which was a real pain because the Macragge marines all come with pin-and-socket joints in static poses. A lot of people comment on this part when they see the wagon on the table.

3) 'Looted' Twin-Linked Rokkit Launchas - courtesy of a Whirlwind I bought for cheap off e-bay. They helped bulk out the front and add that extra orky touch.

4) Magnetized Weapon Slots - all of the weaponry (The top Zzap Gun turret and the Bolt-on Big Shootas) are able to stick anywhere to the bed of the vehicle, as it is magnetic. This allows me to swap out weapons and change equipment based on the game - the 'bed' of the battlewagon can fit up to 5 Bolt-on Big Shootas (two on each wooden 'turret' and one facing off the back), and the Zzap gun is able to pivot to face any direction so that it can fire independantly of the wagon's heading. The magnets are strong enough that you can hold the vehicle upside-down safely without any of the weaponry falling off.

5) 'Ded'Ard' License Plate - obligatory.

6) Working lights! This was my first adventure into wiring -anything-, so I was very pleased with how it turned out. There are three lights powered by a 9v battery; two foward-facing headlights and one interior light to show off the driving ork and his steery mekanism. These lights are turned on by holding the push-button switch on the rear right side disguised as a valve.

7) Grots! Extra grot hanging off the left side of the vehicle, and one of dems misbehavin' gits tied to a spear on the top of the left rear.

A WIP page for the battlewagon exists that showcases pictures from initial concept sketches to the final painting stages. It can be viewed at http://www.fusedcreations.com/adam/wagonblog.html - the pictures are arranged in chronological order so that the full construction can be viewed from beginning to end. You can also get a look at some of the finer details of the wagon if you are interested.

Any comments are much appreciated!

Hot damn! That looks very orky! Good job. I was taking a look at your WIP shots. Lots of plasticard. Every time I use that stuff I lose a finger.

I really dig it! I'm sure hours and hours went into that, and it really turned out great. That is a model that you can really base an army around.

Wow, that thing is super duper Orky! It's like Orky Mad Max or Maximum Ork Overdrive. The tracked semi-trailer look to it is most excellent. Nyarly gives it five out of five tentacles up!

O M G !! (Oh My Gork)......

I bow before your scratchbuiding-fu. That is an absolutely beautiful peice of modelling art.

I have just started building up an Ork force and have a whole bunch of bitz sitting infront of me atm (A 2nd-hand half-built landraider crusader + other stuff), and I have been completely confused and beweilded at what to make everything into.  Your battlewagon has opened my eyes WIDE up.

Congratulations on an excellent battlewagon.

wow that is darn amazing. looks really good, my favorite parts are #1 the grot hanging off the side with the gun and #2 the grot poking the spore mine.

where did the tracks you used come from? it does look like a very orky semi tractor.

Do not use the CLEAR dice!

Dear Whiny Space Marine Players,
you get 3+ armor saves on all your troops (save scouts), Assault cannons, a huge assortment of vehicles and weapons, arguably one of the best if not THE best tank in the game, funny helmets, and a partrige in a pear tree.

suck it up, space marines. You're the emperor's chosen superhuman warriors. stop whining like a guardsmen and take it like a superman!

Personally, I loved the pre-design concept sketches. I just about busted a gut seeing "zapgun, pshew pshew." Definitely an ork player through and through.

Oh, and I love the model.

Use lots of light cuts instead of one strong cut.  Your digits will thank you.

Here in the states it's called "Sheet Styrene". Most hobby shops carry it.

A new day, a new time zone.

Nice work Ein, can't wait to see how the trucks turn out. Every time I see these picutres, it
renews my determination to do some 'skiing' truck boys.

A couple questions, since you seem to have some techniques down pat.  How do you get those chains to hold a static position (such as with your boyz with the swinging choppas,) and how do you deal with cutting plasticard (since you seem to have proven so adept at it).  I've fiddled around with building some bunkers and such, but I have a difficult time getting straight lines, or keeping the card from sliding around.

Regarding miniature work with chains, I suggest trying to find some very thin diameter wire and threading it through the center of the links. Most of the chains I work with have a small wire supoprting the middle which helps me pose them. After that, I usually just dab the joints with a little bit of superglue I have on a throwaway brush (cheap thing) - this helps strengthen the chains nicely.

The battlewagon's surprisingly solid. I have actually dropped this once from about 4 feet onto carpet, and the only thing that took even a tiny bit of damage was the grot tied to the spear on the back, who simply needed to be glued back on. I used some fairly thick plasticard to build the exterior of the thing - I will try and find out what thickness, as I pulled the sticker off what I have left of it.

I started by thinking that the only way I'd be able to cut the plasticard was with a tablesaw, which I did for a short time before I realized it was more of a hassle than it was worth. Even though the card's pretty thick, if you draw the lines you want and score along them with an X-acto knife you can flex the styrene and it will snap along the joint you've cut fairly cleanly. You may find yourself sanding the occasional piece, honestly, but I was quite surprised by how cleanly the edges will snap off with a little bit of scoring.

If it's any help, for long straight lines that I'm not sure I can maintain, I will grab a ruler and use it as a guide for the X-acto knife so I end up getting straighter cuts. I'll usually pin the styrene and ruler to my work table with as much weight as I can comfortably exert with one arm and get to cutting. I've only given myself two cuts to my thumb so far working on this material, which I consider to be a worthwhile sacrifice. They heal quickly, anyway.

I'm working on a squad of Trukk boys in a new style at the moment. There's a W.I.P. thread for em over at The-Waaagh.com, if any of you are interested, but when the squad's done I'll post em up here too.

Thanks for all the comments!
