mad robot wrote: Yes, mauls will be included in the 3rd wave. 2nd wave will be powered sword, powered axe, and slug pistols.
All of these will come 5 to a set. CCW will have 3 right-handed and 2 left handed versions. All the sidearms will have 2 right-handed and 3 left-handed versions. This will allow you to combine them for different combos without any odd ball parts being unusable.
So far, wave 3 will have your powered mauls and plasma pistols. I still need to decide on the 3rd choice.
I'm sure you don't want to think about infantry or body parts right now, but have you considered doing some fatigue legs with puttees? I'd love to make some sci-fi Doughboys, but nobody makes the right kind of legs.
@Barzam: power fists will probably be the 3rd item in wave 3. As for the legs, it's something that may happen with our desert infantry regiment next year. Could be sooner, next year we can be more flexible with the release structure, very much on the fly.

If they're not already included with slug pistols, submachine guns would be nice. Also, hand flamers for us Necromunda players.
@Zogg: SMGs, got it. The new regiment next month will have have some autopistols so those will also appear at some point in these sets. You handflamer will be on the list as well
@deadmeat85: It's easier if you can be more specific but yes, I'm pretty open to ideas
Well, if you're going to go that far, you might as well go all the way and just make some space Doughboys with optional Trench Raider bits. Toss gas masks on all of them and you've got a nice alternative to the Death Korps, too.
Awesome work ! Big fan of aliens and colonial marines . Awesome job . I'm going to have to pick these up ! Thanks for sharing these pics

I haven't checked in for about a month or so and came back to a cornucopia of offerings. These are some excellent bits and concepts here. I especially like the idea for the entrenching tool as a close combat weapon. That's, historically, been considered a desperate weapon of choice, and even modern day, it's not unusual for Special Forces operators to sharpen them up and train with them as an axe type weapon.

I'm sure some hands holding entrenching tools will make an appearance early next year. The first sets of hand/weapon combos should be released next Friday, September 26th. Those will be Laser Pistols, Axes, and Energy Swords.
The next Roll Call, for the Lykan Sawtooths, will begin the following Friday, October 3rd. More info to come on that in the coming days.
Our next Roll Call, starting Friday October 3rd, will introduce a new regiment called the Lykan Sawtooths. They are the perfect combination of tribal rage and killing technology.
Looks like the chain would hit the guard near the hand if it tried to spin. I have no idea why on this bothers me but I've been around a chainsaw all day so maybe that's why
Looks sweet. Lots of IG players will love that arm I bet.
I now love the idea of an Imperial safety brief before issuing equipment. The instructor would barely be finished talking about safety goggles and moving into the importance of double hearing protection before the Commissar would shoot him and bellow "The Emperor protects!" at the jelly that was once his head.
Tribal terrors wielding chain-bladed brutality! Here are a few pics:
That's just part of what is available for this new regiment. To see the full content of this new kit, along with background and pricing info, check out the WEBSTORE
Well, those could also be worked in, one poor colony that was not so fortunate, and that lead to the need for savagery to survive! I just need to deal with the cost per squad/soldier factors.
These guys would be perfect as some kind of Khornate infantry. I think they look really good. Definitely don't have a "good guy" vibe to them though. I expect to see a helmet head option though. These guys are begging to at least have some horned viking style helmets if not full on chainsaw helmets.
I'm curious what you've got planned after these. I think you mentioned having desert fighters in the pipeline and there were the fallschirmjagers as well. I'd love to see some WWI British types or some modern/near future PMC bits. A generic tactical vest torso, some ballcap/headset heads, and SMGs would be awesome.

Have you checked his store for PMC type stuff? I think he already makes most of that.
The big head thing is an issue that comes from being in Heroic Scale.Trust me though, their heads won't be that huge in hand and the overall proportions will look just fine. I've got a full set of the Danamians and they're great. People complained about the same thing when their renders were put up, but in hand, their heads look fine.
Starting work on next years list of releases. I've decided to give you guys an opportunity to suggest some things. If you have suggested something in the best, it might be best to put it here again. Everything is being considered at this point, not just guard-centric bits. That includes new regiments, races, even vehicles, or whatever.
Just remember that there are no guarantees on anything. Let's hear it
Specifically riot troops. You might be able to make them modular so torso, legs and heads can be the same but have different arms for shotguns, rifles, shields and mauls etc...

A sci fi version of a Kettenkrad could be pretty sweet. For those who can't see the image, the idea is basically a halftrack motorcycle, basically a forerunner to the UTV that the German military used back in WWII for hauling light guns, supplies, and personnel.
Heres a suggestion for next year, generic robed models. like the darkangel robed figures just not in powered armor. legs would be one piece torso another and a cowed head. these would be perfect for sob priests chaos cultist and infantry for mecanicus along with uses in other miniature games
also sets of head that represent the characters in the G. I. Joe universe a set of cobra trooper heads, viper heads, crimson guard heads and the generic Joe helmeted heads
Zombies have been done to death. I second the call for robed figures. More stuff that can be used for inquisitor warbands. More relaxed arm poses. More vehicle commander poses.
I mentioned these before, but I'll mention them again: -legs wearing puttees - these would be good for doing some WWI style guys. -WWI/WWII pan-style helmets with gas masks -a generic tactical vest with pouches pre applied -a new head series wearing ball caps and radio headsets. -an SMG style gun. Maybe a space MP5 -in the vein of the riot stuff people are suggesting, I'd like to see heads in riot helmets with visors up and down. -I'd also like to see some heads with modern style tactical helmets with gas masks.
EDIT- forgot to mention.. -at rest bits. More relaxed leg poses, possible some sitting down. Arms holding non-weapon items like beer bottles, wads of cash/playing cards or books. Include at least one pair of arms lighting up a cigarette -A sci-fi looking open topped jeep would be kind of neat. Include a mounted Danamian style LMG on the back of it.
I think an Arbite range would be well received; a full sallet style helmet and variant with lower faces exposed (male and female) would be fantastic and popular. To my knowledge no one makes them whereas some of the suggestions put forth are already made by one or more companies.
I am in dire need of not steel legion or even just there heads and lasguns in the style as seen on the real steel legion figs. noise marine heads like the old metal figs that had a speaker in place of the mouth
I just got a huge order from Mad Robot. The models are remarkably well done. The DaNamian troopers come in a VHS box (which I'm sure the guys that manufacture VHS boxes were pretty excited about) and a ton of fiddly extra bits. The details are sharp, even on small pieces, including frames on the aviator glasses and a stogie. The attention to detail is impressive including frames modeled on the rucksacks, so they can be worn or unslung with the inside of it showing without fear of lazy flat spots. All of it arrived within a week of order with no damaged components. And although it sounds impossible, there are virtually no visible mold lines, even on rounded pieces. I'm blown away by the level of quality of these pieces, and can't wait for them to finish soaking in soapy water to start assembling them.

Crap, that reminds me, I really need to finish building mine. Have a whole platoon's worth sitting in a box at the house as I haven't had time to put them together. Awesome looking models though. First squad went together great and they mix really well with GW Catachan bits, especially from the CCS box.

The really good thing is its consistent with every order as everything I have received has been of the same high quality, I have pretty much never found a mold line on anything which is an accomplishment in itself
I was hoping I could be steadfast... and now you come up with not- mordians and not- praetorians...
how can I resist...????... if you now also make marching legs, and standing at attention legs... and matching arms... you would be my personal heroes...
I'm always a little surprised by how many different manufacturers producing the same sort of minis our industry can support.
They look fine. Not the sort of new concepts/nostalgia references I'd expect from Mad Robot though.

He probably is making these now because he already makes some of the bits to make these guys, so its not too much effort to add another line. The torsos I know he already makes, and I want to say the cap heads, arms, and guns are all already made as well.
Much easier to do than a whole new line like the Danamians for example.
looks like you have hooked me in again, that last guy looks very vos....something....troyan and the guys from zulu are great, if the quality is anything like the last batch i received then i think mad robot will become my only supplier for guard stuff, so far ahead of the competition in terms of casting
These look really great, hopefully I can squeeze them onto my Christmas wish list!
Any chance of spinning the guy with pith helmet and aiming his rifle (second pic) around so we can see the front of his torso? The officer's chainsword and revolver look the ticket by the way! Oh and I've been waiting ages for someone to start producing legs with high boots like those, brilliant!
Never really been a fan of dress uniform guardsmen before but I'm thinking your Imperial torsos and legs plus your tanker heads equals Jouran dragoons, that's what I'm gonna do with mine!
This "Imperial" look is quite versatile, it mixes well with a number of our existing parts. All of these new parts will become available in our custom squad builder as well
@Crimson: There will be a sprue with 3 different officer heads and 3 different officer torsos, that is, 1 of each. Once we hit the new year, I will release those different torsos in their own sets of 5. Hope that makes sense
Yes, yes, yes, abso-fething-lutely YES!! That's exactly how I pictured they'd look as bits cobbled together (your renders are awesome by the way, they really look like actual miniatures), cheers! That torso is bad-ass, I take it that'll be the regular trooper's torso? Love the buckles and straps arrangement.
Will the Valksburg be released normally via the store or another Roll Call? Either way I'm totally looking forward to getting my hands on these guys.
An armoured-up tanker head you say? Sounds good to me! If you ever do like a 'tanker command' head sprue to compliment the classic tankers I'd snap them up!
Looking forward to seeing what you will have next year. Did you ever decide how you were going to do the Fallschirmjaegers? One piece of kit I'd like to make a request for whenever you get around to them would be for a more compact vox caster. The original Steel Legion lacked a proper radioman.

Those are tentatively happening in Q2, not sure on the approach just yet, still taking input
One of the things you'll see in Q1 is a set of command squad parts, including comms gear.
Happy to announce the releases of our latest regiment, the Valksburg Grenadiers. These pics only show part of what has been released today. Please checkout the webstore to see all the new stuff!
This, and soooo much more, is available now in our WEBSTORE
I think your missing a niche with no 24" Pythons. A whole range of steroid abused warriors could be cool....except for a certain company screaming about their IP, and for once I wouldn't be talking about GW.
Hey, just wondering if you're still producing the Paulson Games line of guns and whatnot in 54mm scale? I am looking for the resin gun below to fit on my Anaconda TAG.
I was short on funds for your Black Friday sale, but have been habitually visiting your website and this thread in the hopes that you would announce a Christmas or New Years sale, but, alas, t'was not to be. Besides, my f5 was getting sore. I've got some money set aside for another order in the near future. Every piece I have received from you has been without peer in quality and design, anyone considering ordering from Mad Robot Miniatures should do so without hesitation

Unfortunately there is none of the model I am after. I've dropped him a line on his facebook page, I just thought he might have onsold that side of the business to you.
Also found my metal Sadaokadi troops I got off you from way back in the day. The metal heads are small, but actually are a good size for Infinity, which I will be using them for, so it worked out nicely

Glad they served a purpose
I'm not sure what Paulson's plans are for his mecha parts. I know he wants to get the full line up and running again but I think he still has a few remaining obligations for his Kickstarter.
I was going to start an IG army anyway, promise...
this. all this.
these are amazing.
what legs were they designed to go with?
cos the name would suggest the Imperial legs (here), but think they would look a bit weird with the bottom of the dress tunic showing...? (or whatever that is on the top of the imperial legs, I'm assuming its the tunic)
Also, is there any plan to add them to the Custom Squad Builder?

As Joe Rugby indicates, they are intended to be a part of the Imperial line. Although you could probably match them up with other legs as well, like greatcoat legs
Those parts have been added to the Custom Squad Builder as of right now. Thanks for the reminder
I'm sure Pickelhaubes and Dragoon Helmets will get squeezed in there soon enough, as well.
One last question - will your javin shoulder pads fit on the imperial arms OK?
or would they look weird with the frills sticking out from underneath them?
The arms on those Valksburg Grenadiers look a little blocky and unnatural. Unfortunately, you're in direct competition with vic for my dollar in that department, and as you've priced them the same, and her stuff is quite simply better sculpted, I'm afraid I might be giving them a miss as far as complete kits go.
Having said that, I might grab a few of the heads for variety's sake, and to support your business.

Might not be the best fit but some creative sanding could probably do the trick.
cool. i'm not averse to some filing. thanks again for the replies.
just totted up what I want to buy, and I may have to wait til next payday before I can make the order now!
especially with postage to the uk added on top

Thanks for the insult. If you want to buy from Vic, go ahead.
Chill mad robot, it wasn't insulting. You may not like that someone said they preferred another company, but they did also say they're still interested in buying something, and that they have high hopes for your company (being on par with vic's stuff does seem like pretty solid praise, to me at least), they probably aren't trying to be insulting.
The critique of his work could have been worded a bit more sensitively than it was in that post. Artists are sensitive people, and a critique can sting even when worded as positively as possible.
I myself am looking at the possibility of getting Kurgan kits and or Colonial Marines I just have to have the free cash as I am on a fixed income.
Now maybe the arms in uniform sleeves need more "wrinkles" are spots like elbows inside, at the shoulders and wrists for a more active look, Sculpting at that scale is not so easy until one has had experience and I would say I rather buy the arms as my sculpt skills are no where near Mad Robots' or Vics' in either case.
I can barely sculpt add ons to existing models at the moment, years of neglect on sculpt work, more on drawing and then miniature making and painting.
Addendum: Just re looked and he has the creases and folds in the right spots, so not sure what the one poster was on about. Now as the minis Mad is selling are listed at Heroic scale, and Vics seems more a less heroic scale, the aestehtics may be a issue for him in regards to looking at the difference in miniature parts.

Can you be any more rude? Seriously wtf.
If you don't like his work or style then move along and go suck up to Vic in her own thread, don't make a scene about it. Don't insult him and then suggest he do a year of constant work in order to train and improve, that's just being a jerk for no reason.
I really don't see why it's acceptable for a Mod to take pot shots at a forum users work. Critique is fine but you've offered nothing constructive and went straight for insult instead.
Uh, I don't see anything insulting about Ketara's comment, if anything its encouraging to my eyes, you have come a hell of along way as a digital sculptor which I'm sure you recognise from looking back at your early offerings, they certainly look better then my efforts now to the point that tbh I question whether I'll continue to sculpt items to sell.
Is there room for improvement, sure, and its always a little off putting I know to take critism when your really pleased with something, but your being compared against the market leader frankly, which is massive.
I dont think it was so much the criticism but the way it was delivered saying you prefer some one elses work in the persons thread is off to say the least, the buying the heads was like a throw away gesture I mean come on.
Feedback is always needed so the business can grow and improve but just saying they're not as good as someone elses is pointless, offer some kind of evaluation as to how you might improve them would have been beneficial rather than that statement.
Look, while I am very proud of the way they turned out, I didn't sculpt them so the comments about improving mean nothing. Constructive criticism is fine, it's been given before on this thread.
We've had comments from both sides. Let's follow the advice of the "moderators" and move on.

I see. I wasn't aware that you were subcontracting out. In that case, I'll withdraw my previous comment about another year of sculpting. No insults were intended, if any were perceived, I apologise for that.
I know you were thinking of sticking to heroic proportions for your miniatures, but have you ever considered sculpting alternative miniatures and bits for games like Infinity? There is a lot of desire for miniature conversions, but not a lot of options available (apart from the excellent Statuesque Miniatures and some Hasslefree stuff).

I don't have any plans for that, this year's schedule is already pretty full. Send me an email or a PM with what you have in mind and we can go from there.
I started getting some real work done on those Colonial Marines I ordered from you and I came by to show off a little bit. I was not expecting so much to have been released in the past few weeks. Fantastic looking stuff, I especially like the breastplates. Great touch with the sash at the bottom. Either way, here's a heavy weapons team I'd done up.

I'll try and squeeze them in by the end of March, you may have to remind me
Should also have command squad parts done by then too so it will work out great for you!
I am not gonna lie, those triple button torso's are pretty sweet, be awesome for any officers, swag em out and make em look bad as can be
Only thing is I only need 4......... grr

No problem, been dying to have some, and saw I could spare some cash, Likley get another to break down to command and special OPs. so squad with special heads not sure which to go with, Rescue team or the personalities, and the Balaklava heads for spec-OPs
I do like the Colonial Defence torso's, found they match up well with the FW Elysian legs. Adds a just a little more bulk (armour) to the mini that I think the standard part lacks.Tried also the Scion parts with them to make Veteran/Storm Trooper types but there's something not right in my mind with GW's scaling here.
The Jovian Hammers I bought will find a way into the Drop Co. as well (somehow). Love the proportions ie large stocky and well muscled rather than pot bellied/flabby etc that seems to have carried over from Fantasy .Zinge has an awesome stocky looking minigun set with pose-able belt that even looks like it has Grav Chute vents so that's the Ripper sorted Trying to source atm a few of the GW Ogryn mask heads which will fit the theme nicely.
So, also happy with my purchases from MR.

I've found that if you shave the scion's arms in the gap between the shoulder pad and where the arm is glued onto the torso you can get a nice fit. The scion legs, however, are way off. I'll be getting some CDF legs in the near future, as well as some different bits and pieces here and there rather than using the Maximini legs etc. I've got a model I did this for in the spoiler below.

Alright, fine, you caught me. I admit it, I'm a huge fan. In fact, I remember discarding my dignity and begging and pleading for you to one day head into enclosed helmet (and EVA!) territory. Good times, good times
Yeah I did, worked with a fantastic 3D artist on Shapeways, more than happy to share the link if you're interested! I love them, they have a lot of synergy with the Mad Robot stuff, I'm hoping to create an IG army that has plausible design elements of EVA and orbital combat.
Here's a preview of some heavy weapons coming out in about a month.
This kit will have 3 sets of arms, with options that will match up with all our current regiments. There will also be some extra ammo, and a tripod extender to allow for standing teams.

Liking the look of the HB, that LC looks right cool!
I look at that auto-cannon and hear the Pom-pom-pom-pom already!
That will work well having CDF arms for my guys, and any troops I order in future! (Really leaning to Kurgans as next).
The extender for standing behind a taller barricade is also a great idea that some companies seem to have neglected, forcing their heavy weaponeers to have to get low to the ground! Very forwards thinking of you!
Something you guys ought to consider, how about an add-on sensor back that clips onto the heavy weapons to make them automated. CDF wouldn't be right without their Auto-Sentries.
Do you guys know if Mad Robot still has the free shipping on orders over $100? About to place an order but didn't see it on the shipping page anymore... *devastation*

Very Happy to announce that Mad Robot will be offering prize support for the Warhammer 40K Championships and Warhammer 40K Team Tournament at Adepticon this year.
And?! I've never been to America, that's precisely what makes our Vegas trip so special.
And I had to say medium to financially assuage my own guilt and set the stage for my inevitable future purchases, haha. Once I had my first order and saw the quality I really regretted not getting more. Also, kudos on the free shipping threshold, I am such a predictable sucker for free shipping, it makes me feel like all my money goes on product and not on transport.

Exactly!
My IG is a conglomeration of different Republics as part of a grand Union of republics. Khadrovian Union of United Republics, or K.U.U.R for short.........Hmmm, may have to "dog theme" my vehicles and such? Same with platoons?
Just got my order of 20 CDF troopers with heat rifles, and seeing the attention to detail, well, even the bored out rifle barrels won me over! I will post pics in my Plog of the troopers as they progress!
Had to do some adjusting of arms for the rifles to rest, many hold the ammo mag at the bottom, all is working out, shoulder pads are smaller than I thought, but not impossible to work with.
Oh yeah major help NOT having to drill out the rifle barrels! I will be making more purchases
Oh and I just had the idea of making some Para-troopers from the right parts of the minis pieces made by MRM.
Okay, using the parts this will be a 61.50 dollar jump squad, just the 10 man variety
Tanker heads+Imperial Torso 3+jump packs+CDF legs+Fatigue arms+Luminous CQ rifles+GL+PRor flamer and that is w/o9 additional accessories yet, or officer arms, well, odd for a Para leader to have fancy arms. Yet it is a custom squad after all.
Oh silly me! I just discovered the "custom squad builder" which will keep the price of the Paratroops down to the same price as any complete squad! I feel rather silly!

I was kinda scratchin' my head there for a moment but things worked out after all

Yeah, now I can work on making the paratroopers with the grav chutes added in my cart in a few weeks, as well as the "Expendable rescue team" Of course for one, I will have to order the Zinge mini-gun and flexible ammo feed, I can order the Danamian MGs and a grenade launcher, Man with mini-gun ain't got time to bleed.

By the way, I am introducing fireteam deals for all the regiments and also a custom fireteam builder. i should have those up in the next week or so.

Fireteams, like the 5-man squads? so peeps can have a alternative style, cool
Oh yeah, and the PPSh-44 and the AK-47 were the prime examples, most though don't know of the SKS which was old grip style, but similar parts to the AK.
SKS
Fireteam offers flexibility in military ops. So, the CDF squads I bought, I can see splitting one team with the "smart-gun" and another around the heat rifle. and allows the split squad the ability to cover more ground, and conduct missions differently than a 10-man full squad.
Of course buying the smaller 5-man team already at a lower price is a smart move as many games offer to use the smaller force breakdowns, and folks are moving to those kinds of infantry games that allow more flexibility even for lighter armored and armed soldiers as 40k is not the only game to play in town any more.
The Fireteam thing is just a 5-man squad with the same options. There will be fireteams for all our regiments and a custom one as well. I undertsand that sometimes folks may not want to invest in the 10-man kits so the fireteams are designed with that in mind. More Info coming later this week hopefully.

That's awesome news for my now limited budget! Whenever I get my bank account recovered, I can finally buy that LRRP team and maybe even experiment with other parts combos.
If you're thinking of experimenting with other combos, the custom squad builder allows you to build things in 2 units of 5. So although you get 10 guys, they can be constructed out of any two selections of MRM's options. So you could have fatigue legs as your first choice and CDF legs as your second, that way you're also still able get the great savings on the squad builder. Apologies if you're already aware, just thought I'd appreciate that tidbit if I wasn't aware
No, I was aware of that. The one minor downside to using the custom squad builder is that there isn't an option to add the extra bits like shoulder pads or backpacks.
Barzam wrote: No, I was aware of that. The one minor downside to using the custom squad builder is that there isn't an option to add the extra bits like shoulder pads or backpacks.
That is being addressed
I will be happy to field any other suggestions for these custom squads over the next day or so.
Curious about helmet possibilities. What are the chances for you make hats and helmets? Say mordian type caps, ANZAC slouch hats, World War I british Brodie helmets, berets? Just the hats/helmets so we could put them on bare heads. I would be very interested in buying some.
I would also be interested in heads with the same type of helmet/hats but the empties provide the chance to customize.

I love your products. Keep up the good work.
As a lover of custom figures, I understand the appeal of switchable helmets/hats but I'm afraid it just won't happen. Apart from the Brodie helmets, which are coming soon, all those options are already available in our webstore.
Thanks to all for your continued support, Heavy Weapons teams are coming soon. I'll post a print preview once I have them in hand.
I would be very happy if you released Brody helmets.
I would also recommend you make your rifles two sided. You have left and right arms, which is why I purchase from you. However the rifles seem to be built for righted models. One side is amazing. The other side is less detailed.
Fallschirmjaeger looking troops? I know you also mentioned a command pack, and a vehicle? I have seen the tread-bike, but somehow, I am thinking this is a bigger vehicle, at a guess,,,,an APC or scout vehicle.
mad robot wrote: The next few weeks should see the release of the Heavy Weapons teams. Also this quarter will be a modular Commissar kit and a Command Squad kit.
Got my mini order today, a set of FN FAL rifles and Lynn, who will make an excellent objective marker for this year's Halloween event. Overall the casting quality is just fine, hardly any flash and no mold lines.
I decided to stick one of the rifles onto a FemCadian from Victoria Lamb's range, the rifle nicely fitting into her hands. I just need to fix the stock a wee bit. Also added onto the FAL is a scope from Anvil Industries, making for a nice not-Vindicare or generic veteran with sniper rifle.
I think someone further up this thread mentioned that they didn't think the Mad Robot torso's fit with GW Tempestus Scions legs/arms - just thought I'd post this as I disagree
Mad Robot Miniatures Imperial Breastplate Torso, Beret Head, and Jump Pack
with Tempestus Scions Legs/Arms:
Hey guys, my order arrived and I thought I'd share my thoughts. I've tried to include pictures, but only when I actually post will I find out if they worked! The details were crisp and while I have not yet completed a 100% inspection, thus far there have not been any miscasts or issues with any of the pieces. They arrives in Aust within a week and I am absurdly happy with my choice to put the order in.
Spoiler:
In the pictures below (or broken links if I've done it wrong) I've used Mad Robot's CDF torso, Balaclava (version 3 I think), CDF legs, rolled sleeve arms, Butt pack, Canteen and Bulldog Rifle
[/img]
Round 3 now at trying to figure out how to work links, this time with some directions from Alpharius
Nope, it's not just you. I'm honestly useless at linking, I'm messaged Alpharius begging and pleading him to show me how to do them correctly. The pics, should you wish to see them in the mean time, are on pg 2 of the link in my sig. This is not a plug! Just a stop-gap until I get the image embedding sorted haha
Wooooooooooooooooooooo! Thanks to the advice from Alpharius, I got the links to work! They're in the spoiler a few posts up, this is an exciting moment for me. Thanks Alph!
General Hobbs wrote: Love the helmet! Figure looks great, but the scope looks oversized :(
I agree entirely, glad you like the helmet! I actually decided to GS a scope (or check out a suggestion made by LDD) to rectify that, it looked good on a lasgun, but MRM's bits are more streamlined and the scope is just too bulky.
Super proud to be an official part of Adepticon this year. Here's a great thing we put together for the Charity Raffle, from the press release:
Mad Robot Miniatures is a proud sponsor of the AdeptiCon 2015 Charity Raffle and truly excited to offer a unique hobby opportunity to a lucky winner. That person will receive a custom made set of heads, in 28mm heroic scale, based on their face and the faces of up to 4 of their friends. That's right! A full custom set of heads that look like you and up to 4 of your buds! Mad Robot will consult with the winner, create digital sculpts, and cast them up for you to use on your favorite models. This process will take some time...trust us, it will be worth it!
You can buy your charity raffle tickets to support Wounded Warrior Project and Hospice of Michigan at cart.adepticon.org. 100% of the proceeds generated from this raffle are split between both charitable organizations. So help out two great causes and give yourself a chance to win some cool prizes.
BrookM wrote:If looking for great alternate scopes, give Anvil Industries a try
Thanks heaps for the link BrookM, actually the third person I've had direct me that way! I really like the sci-fi and square aesthetics of their Republic range, and ordered a few of their legs for ODST conversions. The poses are dynamic and great, but I'm not sure how they cast their minis, but the texture of the legs are really quite grainy - particularly on flat armour surfaces, their fatigues seem fine. It's certainly only noticeable on closer inspection, and can be managed with some persistent scraping and filing, but I don't know how well I could smooth something so small and delicate. That said, I'll pick up a set and see what can be done with them, hopefully they won't be too hard to clean.
I've included pics of an Anvil Industry set of Republic Grenadier legs and a Mad Robot Mini's set of CDF legs - both are how they came out of the pack. The smoothness of the MRM legs is a big boon to me, as I'll be using repetitive glazing to paint them, I really need to spend considerable time addressing the graininess of the AI legs or else that will really show up in my painted mini.
mad robot wrote:@Akh: I could probably do a few and they won't look like they're made of oatmeal, referring to those massive pictures posted above.
MRM's scopes? I'm sold! Haha. I'll pick up a set in my next order, though I might have to wait till I've painted a few pieces from my current order, or I'll actually have to face the fact I have far more toy soldiers than I'm ever likely to finish painting

At some point, I would like to do some some alien figures. When then does happen, the Harook will probably be first on the list.
It will be at least another year before I will consider it.

Good to know it's at least a possibility some time in the future.
Building off the idea of our Custom Squad Builder, we now give you the chance to customize a 5-man team. You get to mix and match any of the parts from our massive catalog of conversion bits to make the perfect fire team. We also throw in your choice of a special weapon and officer arms as well.
Glad to see you're still making miniatures that people want to buy. My facebook is glitched..again.. preventing me from posting on non-friend's timelines so I thought I would post here.
Post-apoc skirmish - Yeah.. I have the Dark Age rulebook.. and find it interesting, additional models for that could be neat.
Sci-Fi mounts - Blightwheel has some cool birds and maxmini has a lizardy type thing.. someone else has a taun taun type critter but I can't remember who and the old Void minis that are available through Scotia Grendle has some neat dino looking mounts. Perhaps something ram-like or a giant cat type creature.. possibly with additional front legs.. or maybe some kind of amphibious creature like a newt or maybe something mechanical like a Star Wars AT-RT?
Tanks with sponsons or without.. I am almost to the point of hating gothic sci-fi and over-use of WWII type vehicles is a staple of that.. most modern tanks don't have sponsons. Most concept art of sci-fi tanks don't even have other hull-mounted weapons past the main gun and maybe a cupola mounted support weapon or two.
The upcoming heavy weapon kits, you might consider also selling the tripod separately for people who have one or two gw kits and just really need that... btw those lascannons are nice. I like that they have more of a hard-sci-fi look.
On another note - Dropships.. nobody will go near them in 28mm.. Antenociti keeps teasing (for years now) and all these awesome 15mm and 10mm dropships are coming out but for 28mm we're stuck with ancient kits from Old Crow etc or GW. That's unsat.
Mad Robot has typically been all about the Geedub proxies for the last.. I dunno.. forever.. perhaps consider doing some 28mm content for rules that don't have official ranges in 28mm scale. For instance: Tomorrow's War, 5150, Stargrunt 2, Fast and Dirty, and Cleared to Engage.
I know a lot of people are currently exploring 40k alternatives for gaming. It'd be nice to have more options..
It's probably just me, but I'd like giant wolves for mounts. Not GW style cyborg wolves, either. Just large, normsl looking wolves with riding gear on them. Just imagine your IG Rough Riders charging into battle on giant wolves. Who wouldn't want that?
something else I personally wouldn't mind seeing would be some true-scale sized heads. I'd like to convert Infinity figures, but the only company I can think of that makes heads in the right scale is Statuesque.
I would personally love some robotic mounts/horses - have just started reading 'Prospero Burns' and there is mention of a IG unit that have robotic steeds (edit: these guys: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Tupelov_Lancers), and would love to model something based on that...

If only I have been waiting for someone to produce cybernetic steeds for years fingers crossed

Sponsons are in actuality a nod by GW to the First World War, and they are optional, Leman Russ w/o sponsons looks closer to WWII than WWI or between the wars era tanks.
WW-I like sponosn armed
WW-II like no sponsons
BUT the Gothic design ethos leaves a tank that towers over the battlefield, whilst more modern tank designs rarely get over 8-10ft tall anymore. (OLd American M-60A3 was our last tall tank. 10ft 6.5inches tall, the present M-1A2 Abrams is 8ft tall, Russia's T-90 is 7ft 3inches tall.) Leman Russ is topping about 13 or so ft tall for a main battle tank. And no other Imperial Tank designs out there seem to be had that are lower in silhouette, yet they have made other tanks for the other races that were shorter, one would think by now at least a decent lighter/shorter model would have been made. The Old Crow model tanks are more modern looking that the GW versions imho.
I love the Old Crow APCs and tanks because they look very modern to near future.. however, they're close enough that I can just buy a 1/48 model kit of a stryker or battle tank of some sort for a fraction of the cost.. which is something because Old Crow doesn't really charge all that much IMO.
Khurasan has a nice 28mm tank that is tracked and a bit more along the lines of hard sci-fi and antenocitis has hover tanks. Titan Forge has some nice tank designs on their current kickstarter and they are what I would consider hard sci-fi. I'd say Puppetswar is also in the camp of hard sci-fi. To be clear, this is the aesthetic I personally prefer.. but I understand that everyone is not there. EDIT: Forgot Pig-Iron's APC which is also Hard Sci-Fi
Maxmini and Victoria.. I believe.. both showed tanks a while back that would be considered gothic/ww1 or 2 ish in nature. Victorias IIRC kinda just looked like a Matilda/Chimera love child and Maxmini was a KV2/Cathedral love child.
You also have the old GZG stuff at Daemonscape.. which mostly looks like it came from an 80s sci-fi movie or really out there concept art. Some of it is serviceable but the models are definitely dated.
Why did I just name drop all of this stuff in a MR thread? Mostly so that MR sees this and does the research (which probably already happened anyway) and to give others a chance to look around and get a feel for things. I see more and more the comment of "eh.. just more of the same" about new models from companies like Mad Robot. By and large I don't think people accept that it's mostly just a style choice.. and in some cases it isn't that simple. If MR does in fact start making armoured vehicles, I'll be paying attention. The only way I'll actually end up purchasing it though is if it stands out from all the stuff already out there in either design or price. Considering I just ordered 10 Tehnolog 28mm scale battle tanks for $60, it's kinda looking like it'll need to be a cool aesthetic choice.
Also.. Still waiting for some kind of AT-4, Javelin, Bazooka, Stinger Missile, etc.. I remember that being mentioned as far aback as the DaNamians and earlier.
I was looking around this morning and realized that there is a distinct lack of 28mm Star Wars Rebel conversion kits.
Obviously you don't want to get too close.. but the heads like on the Endor Commandos.. yeah.. nobody does anything remotely close to that. A few guys (like you) have ball caps that would require a bit of sculpting.. but that's about as close as it gets.
Poncho torsos are also missing. Those would be cool for Clint Eastwood or Forest Commandos alike and should be pretty easy to boot.
Just placed an order, one fire team rescue team heads a GL I have Zinge Industries Mini gun for that Not Blaine head. also ordered Danamian weapons so one will have that M-60 looking gun, Bulldog rifles because I like the chunky look of those beasty rifles. and to back them up some Jovian Hammer and canteens.
I have heads for the weapon torso, and plenty of left over legs from Definace UAMC kits to make a 6th rescue team guy!
Don't do this to me man, I still need to finish building the guys I bought from you last time and get some of those colonial defense minis
The CDF are awesome minis! He advised me to wait a bit for some command squad or bits for one, he is very mysterious about it all, even the vehicle hints!
The combined Rescue team and Jovian Hammers are set to be delivered tomorrow, barring any more weather shenanigans!
Oh that freaky snow storm in Kentucky caused my rescue tam and Jovian Hammers to be delayed and redirected. Once I have them, I can assemble them and show my teams off
Hey guys thought I'd do a little upload to show how the Danamians look compared to Catachans, as well as what they look like with Catachan bits slapped on.
Spoiler:
Overall, I really like the look of them. The bare arms Mad Robot makes look a lot better than the GW Arnold biceps for your average grunt and they match up perfectly with GW Lasguns. The MR 16's Robot sells with these guys look good too, I'm just saving them for another project and figured that by mixing in regular lasguns on these guys they'd blend in with my regular Catachans better.
Also, in case anyone remembers, we all thought the flak vests looked a bit ridiculous in the 3d renders. After making over 30 I feel safe to say that we were worrying for nothing, they look fine in person, and I actually prefer them over the regular uniform torsos.
One complaint I do have, and it's a very minor one, is that regular long sleeved arms that he makes aren't quite the same scale as the bare arms. The pic doesn't quite show it, but the long sleeve arms make the guys look like they're wearing a heavy coat instead of just a regular uniform. I'm not sure if this is because the sleeved arms are too bulky, or if the sleeveless arms are too skinny, but it is noticeable and I would recommend avoiding mixing the two if at all possible. For some reason I never got any rolled sleeve arms, so I don't really know how they scale, but my guess is they would look fine with the sleeveless arms.
Spoiler:
Finally, if you plan on mixing GW bits with these guys, only mix them with bits from the Catachan command box, these mix very well with Mad Robot's stuff and would give you a lot of extra kit and special weapons to deck out your guys. DO NOT mix them with the regular infantry box bits, or else it will look like your guys are wearing a hulk suit (unless you got the rescue team head pack, in which case they make Arnold look awesome). Also, Cadian and Catachan lasguns fit flush with his arms with zero issues whatsoever. They look like they were meant to be there and scale quite well with his minis' proportions. Flamers look a little big, but they look big on regular GW infantry too. Didn't try anything else really, but if you have a particular GW weapon that has no hand molded to it, odds are it will work with these guys no problem, it just might look a bit big because GW weapons can be a bit large at times.
I can post more pics if you guys want. I put together a fairly large platoon with a variety of head and weapon options and they turned out really well. In particular, if you plan on getting these guys, I would recommend a mix of boonie hats and the helmets, as they look the best with these minis. I would also stick with bare sleeve arms if you are using flak vest torsos, they look the best out of everything I tried, with a close second being rolled sleeve arms.
My only real complaint is that heads are very fiddly to get to stay on at times. Unlike a lot of companies out there that use the socket for the neck and a ball end under the head to make posing easy and secure, Robot's have just a flat stump, and the heads don't really have anything on the bottom to really facilitate a flush fit without using lots of glue. They end up looking fine in the end, it can just be a pain after you've done 25 of them and every time you nudge the table before the glue has dried a head pops off.
Overall I'd give it a solid 8 out of ten. Mad robot has really been improving with every kit and I'm glad I got these. His newer heads in particular show a lot of improvement and I'm eager to see what he releases next. If I end up sticking with Catachans and getting back into 40k, I'll probably buy more of these from him as well as a squad or two of his colonial defense troopers.
The fatigue arms are a bit bulky, that will be addressed in a possible resculpt this summer. They were the first arms we did and the learning curve was still in effect a bit.
Looks like I will finally have my rescue team and BIG guys tomorrow, the package finally got to my state after the bad weather re-directed it to North Carolina!!!!
But once things hit the capital, they are not long for getting to me. Then I can make them and show them.
mad robot wrote: Glad to see they will be there soon Shas, damn strange that it took so long.
Well, I guess the trucks went or tried to get through Kentucky, which had that iced in highway, so they sent it ti Fayetteville NC, they then said it left there at 4:13am the 9th, then again at 5:57pm the 9th, odd for that, and now it was departing Charleston at 8:07pm today which means it will get delivered from my local office come the mid day of the 11th,,,Mother nature has had some messing around of late.
Another unrelated package from Secret Weapon Miniatures has not been tracked since the 7th, I fear it is also delayed due to the odd weather. My guess is that one is rerouted due to Colorado mountain roads iced.
