Happy Friday update day everyone! My gorgeous partner came home sick from work today so my painting time did get cut short, but she's asleep on the couch at the moment so i thought i'd steal a few minutes and say G'day!

Finished 3 out of 4 of my plasma cannon weilders! just waiting on a bits swap with the very generous Flying Pooo! then I can have a full squad, I also did the flame insignia on the shoulders, i tried to do them reminiscent of the old Dev squad marking you used to see a bit, I ordered all my round bases (that will make some happy ) so they should arrive soon, and the way i want to paint them will be pretty easy and basic but will look good with them
I also have a small question for you all, how should i arm my dev squad sergeant? he won't generally be close to the action so what does he get? plasma pistol? bolt pistol? chainsword? 'cos i gotta paint his arms too and need to get moving on him!

And now for something a bit different! I was looking through my bits boxes for parts for my recent trade and i came across something I was playing with when i had my Raven guard army ages ago! I wanted to field a squad of assault marines with lightning claws and while collecting parts I had an abundance of the wolf guard claws and wanted to use them, my first instinct was to simply shave them smooth but the longer I looked at them trying to get inspired to shave them all down i had an 'AHA!" moment, the wolf skull on them could it be changed? the answer is "yes" so with a renewed vigor I got out my blade and went to work! after a short time (as this really isn't hard) I had what i hope would pass as a raven skull instead of the wolf! just by simply shaving the sides off to form a point to the beak and adding 2 small holes for nostrils with a scalpel it was done! you can actually do this with any wolf skull that gives you easy enough access so hopefully i've just inspired any Raven players to start making some sweet models! I roughly painted one up to show you, please keep in mind I only painted up the skull quickly so you can see it

Hope you like:

And here's the Plasma squad....so, nearly finished then you won't have to look at them again until i gallery them!

There you go for another day! i'm off to see if Kristy is feeling better and try and get her to drink something other than Vodka (living with me must be hard ) Kidding, kidding! but i am going to check on her, so ill catch you all later tonight and see what you think!

Happy painting

Nice work on the Devastators! I really like the flame insignia. I will be looking forward to seeing your raven guard squad now. They should be sweet!
Sorry about the wait on the bits, Iv'e been swamped with school work at the moment.
I'll send them on Saturday. I should have time then. Sorry for the wait.

How funny guys! :-) 'teaser trailer' ha! I won't have time to do much in the next week or so, so i'll try and get some decent work done before i do an update next time, otherwise you'll just be seeing the same boring old speeders and devs! lol
and i'm glad you like my idea for the raven guard conversions, sadly I never ended up using them in my force when i made them :-( but when i found them i thought it may be useful to someone out there in dakka land? I sold them to finance my Marines Exemplar and then sold them to finance my current salamanders army! and as i'm finally spending time on an army and painting them what I consider well, I won't be selling them anytime soon...or when they're done :-)

Hopefully my bases tun up on monday!

Itty bitty update time! not much done worth showing, but I wanted to start on a Hammernator to give me a core model to work from when I do the rest, managed to do his head and start the shield and get him pose worthy, i think he'll look cool as ice when he's done! much cooler than Mr cool ice though! (google image him if you haven't seen him before!)

so, here he is, and although i've started on his storm shield and he'll get it finished I have decided to get all the others and sand them down flat on the front and do my lava & rocks thing with all of them, so this guy will be my termie sergeant with a 'special' shield!

and i like how his hair turned out too, not bad for a ranga! couldn't quite get a decent shot of how the highlights turned out on it though

well, that's the itty bitty update done! I am now going to the kitchen to make a black coffee (no sugar) turn off the stereo, open the window in my bedroom and relax and try and get through some more of the Soul Drinkers Omnibus, and probably have a nanna nap!

I hope everyone else's day is as hectic and exciting!

Even with that ranga hair he is still cooler than ice. Well cooler Mr cool ice anyway.
Maybe you should make him a Soul Drinker with that hair.

Hi eggroll, thanks mate, i'm glad you like it, it was a bit of a tester with the hair, as usually we don't see them with any! but in the BL books they get described with red hair on a few of them as well as red beards/goatee and grey hair, so i have some options to play with, and the skin i'm really happy with, personally i don't like the fluff about them with the onyx black skin but I must say like this it's growing on me more and isn't too dark, still not as nice as your BA sergeant you did :-)

hopefully he'll be finished in a week or so, i just need a touch of inspiration and time! still need to finish the other models i started as well!

thanks again for checking in dude, i appreciate it! as i appreciate everyone who follows my work and ramblings! so thanks to all!

Finally finished the 2 speeders! well, all apart from a couple of small touch ups and lines, but they are done enough to say they're done! it's the first completed work for my sallie army, and after painting some hoses on the last of the dev squad and the arms on the sarge they'll be done too! but problem is, I still don't know what to arm the sarge with? I really need some educated input to enable me to finish them off

I seem to be making good progress, I started my week and a half off work on thursday, it's now saturday and i'm looking at 2 speeders and the dev's nearly done! so I've got the rest of the time off to paint my dreadnought and the test terminator i started

here's the speeders guys, hope you like them, i promise you won't see them again until I get them glamour shot!

that's it for now dudes and dudettes! i'll be updating as soon as i get more painted for viewing!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the compliments! the pilots and gunners where a tad tricky to paint as i made a mistake and glued them in before i'd finished highlighting them, hence i still need to touch up a couple of lines here and there.

I should be working on my bases soon too, the paint hopefully will arrive tomorrow morning and I'll start straight away on them all! not sure how 'shiny' to keep them as they're the checker plate style ones, I'd like to perhaps imagine them in a boarding action or industrial zone, I don't want to weather them too much, but i'll start and then get some feedback from you all.

Oh, any ideas for help arming my dev sarge? bolt pistol? power fist? chain sword? bolt gun? plasma pistol?...... i'm confused, he won't really be seeing any action hopefully but if anyone gets close he'll need to cap some fools?

catch you soon!

I keep thinking that up-arming my dev sergeant would be a good idea and a nasty surprise for anyone who wants to deal with them by assault... but then I'm always short of points so his upgrade never makes the cut. I like the bolt gun because it at least gives him a 24" range shot. Chain sword gives him one extra attack but with no modifiers of any sort (i.e. not powered) I'm not sure how valuable that is.

Looking nice Damo. I really like the highlighting on that green, I have to get into the habbit of highlighting properly rather than relying so much on washes. I thought that I had really broken my Rhino when I washed it with Devlan Mud. Will have try something like how you have painted the flat panels on this guy on my next Rhino.

Nerdfest09's Blog now with terain building shenanigans and a Mino Command. @ 2011/11/02 09:25:52

Post by: nerdfest09

Hey guys, cheers for dropping in, the sarcophagus is burnished gold with a bone scroll and winged skull motif, boltgun cables and my usual red/yellow lenses :-) I also think I may just give it a thin line highlight in a brighter green just for a bit more definition.

And I also started and nearly finished all my bases today! photo's soon, I didn't want to spend ages on them but wanted them to look decent without being overpowering with the marines, so as they are checker plate designs i used a can of Army painter plate metal primer, then used the airbrush and washed with badab black mixed with acrylic thinners, this gave them all a fairly dull matte finish, then i just devlan mud washed parts and added a small amount of blazing orange watered down to give it a worn appearance without looking dilapidated, i'm in the process of painting the hazard stripes on the edges now, but for half hours work for 43 bases i'm happy! :-)

happy painting bro's i'll pic you up tomorrow!

Greetings fellow Nerds! I had a fun day today, I knew it was going to be a green day when i had Avocado on toast and green rock melon for breakfast! then I got to doing man stuff like mowing the lawn, raking, washing the front of my house, doing the washing, you know, the usual stuff we do! then i got to sit down for a little while and paint some Salamanders! well, a dreadnought at least, and some bases, and stick some marines to bases and generally enjoy my session!

I hope you like the direction i took with them, especially the dread, I am quite pleased with how he looks, it's a little different than what you usually see but I like the large expanses of green and the shot of gold on him, I also did my bases, now, before anyone shoots them down too quickly, I hate painting bases! I just don't enjoy them! so i tried to paint them quickly and still look on a level to hold the miniatures, some of my hazard stripes aren't quite even or straight but you don't notice when they're all together

BUT, I think once the mini's are on the bases it looks really cool! so now, I have 2 speeders completed, 4 plasma cannons, 1 dreadnought, and a single tac marine running down the steps!

firstly some base action:

Next up the plasma guys:(I just saw that mark on the base I need to fix!)

And now the big boy, yet to be named dreadnought! :

Well that's it dudes and dudette's (I don't know if any dudette's even follow this!)

see ya soon!

Very neat army. That lava rock pattern is a very cool idea and well executed, especially on the Land Speeders! Not a fan of the "black-black-skin-red-red eyes" interpretation of the background but that's up to individual decision. Are you going to do the bases of the land speeders in any way or are you going to keep them clear plastic?

Thanks sigur and GD1, I know what you mean about the fluff concerning the skin colour and eyes, but i even though i'm not a huge fan I hope mine turned out respectable for an interpretation :-) and i think i'll leave the flying bases clear at this stage, maybe change them later on?
my army list is a 2000 point list give or take a few points, I had a master of the salamanders chapter work it out for me! so thanks to Pyriel I should have a nice scary army going on! I have all the models now just need to get painting! I really need to get a tad more prolific like you two!

Got bored, got inspired, got some stuff done.... not much but enough thought you may like to have a look? firstly I did some work on my hammernators shields, I sanded each one flat and then added my 'trademark' rocks ready for the lava look i like as a theme no paint yet, they're drying....

I also was checking dakka and came across a member asking about painting red quickly for blood angels, so i again, got inspired to help and PM'd him a method i experimented with, this guy while not perfect is imo pretty neat for table top and he took juts over 30 min from start to finish (not including wash drying time though)

how he started:

and how he looks at the end:

Nothing too crazy but to offer help to someone learning to paint he's a quick easy method that anyone can produce, and i was harking back to my old speed painting methods with painting a full 10 man squad in a day in mind.

that's it today not much fun for you all, I better get cracking on my next project that's threatening to derail my Salamanders! i'll let you know how that goes too! if it looks like a go then my blog is gonna tsake a MASSIVE swing in a direction I haven't done before!

take care!

Nice work on the BA. Can you post your tut please?

Hi Gits, thanks for the compliments as usual :-) the shields were just (somewhat obviously) sanded smooth and then I used 'brown stuff' to make the little balls and pushed them into a rough flat shape with my partners tweezers I stole, I like the brownstuff better as it isn't as sticky as gs and it's a bit firmer and easier to use imo.

I'll PM you my tute for the blood angel as i sent it to the guy and if you think it's o.k or can change it I may put it up? if it's clear enough? :-)

Yep, it appears i've fallen from grace, found myself searching for pleasures elswhere while the love of my life the Salamanders aren't looking! but never feat they aren't going anywhere and i hope they can forgive my indescretions of the modeling kind! you know what it's like, the seed gets planted in your mind and soon you're drifting off to sleep with army schemes and colours in a mad kaleidascope whirling, fighting for dominance over your thoughts both subconscious and waking! and with me it was just a small idea the prospect of buying some decent priced un painted mini's that hooked my fragile mind! sooooo after a day or two toying with the idea of weather financially I should be attempting any more purchases... on the cusp of sleep thoughts came unbidden into my mind...

Lord Renarch Methara saw nothing but himself in the reflection of the mirror in his suite, nothing but his fine robes, his perfect hair and strong jaw, and his grey eyes that bored through administrators and servants alike. those eyes held power, they commanded start fleets to protect his planet, his cities, his hives, his people. his thoughts were of little else, enjoying the private reverie about himself, knowing that soon he wouldn't be ruling and running this world for much longer, not that he hadn't tried to protect it, he had, he'd heard rumors, been fed reports and had acted swiftly to quash any news to prevent an uprising from the citizens.
scouts and troops had been sent at first, then full platoons and larger artillery, apparently they had all vanished in the woods to the east of the city, long before even reaching half way to the destination they had originally set for, that should have been the point to call for aid, to let someone know there was something out there, but being a proud man had now led to his demise, and the death of his entire city, he felt like he was the last man alive in the building, and in truth.... he was.
Lord Renarch Methara gazed at himself in the mirror, as what appeared to be stannic shapes detached themselves from the ebon shadows crawling up the walls of his chambers, and three figures, lithe and taller than any humanoid should be, seemed to glide in a heartbeat to stand behind him, he knew they had been there all along, letting him have his own thoughts before they took him, he could see them still as statues in the reflection of the mirror, their armour was segmented like the shell of some chitinous creature, shining a dull metal in colour, a splash of bronze on their shoulder, oh so smooth did they look, like every inch of what they wore was polished and buffed to a shine, to help channel whatever rich red viscous liquids they spilt from his body, and to watch it in some macabre dance as it made it's way down to pool on the hardwood floor, for that is exactly why they had polished their armour for, to watch as the blood formed ruby droplets and raced each other down soft curves to launch softly off the spiked gauntlets and splash quietly into what remained of Lord Renarch Methara.

Yes dammit, Dark Eldar! they tease me with the sculpts and taunt me with the prowess of battle, so after scrummaging around in my box of Nerd stuff, i found a box of Wyches i recieved last year from my best mate for my birthday (thanks nerdfest11) I originally planned to use them as a necromunda gang but lost interest after assembling them roughly to play a game! a smile on my lips and a brush in my hand I set about a couple of days ago to see what i like and to see if i like painting them enough to start an army? well, the answer is No, i don't enjoy painting them, as i said to Gitsplitta, they are bloody evil fiddly little bastards! BUT, i do enjoy how they are coming along and I love the poses they can have sooo, yes, looks like DE it is for me for a while, but I shall still be churning out the sallies as well, every time the DE get too fiddly i'm finding the familiar calm that bright green can give me

These bad boys and girls aren't finished yet but i thought i'd show you the start of my progress with them and see what you think?...enjoy? I hope

That's it for now, I'll do some more on them next thursday/friday and hopefully get them tabletop finished! any comments are welcome (just don't be too harsh )

cheers dudes/dudettes

WOW!! Now that is a good looking DE! NF09 you did a really really good job on those models. Don't feel bad brother for venturing off the power armour grind think of it as expanding your skills of the trade . The blending of the black and greys are spot on and the vibrant colors of the hair really break up the colors and make each model stand out.
Great job brother!

Thanks so much GD1! I always appreciate comments from people who I myself look up to for inspiration with my mini's! I was a bit dubious when i started them as I wanted them to look like leather clad dominatrix types without too much obvious ornamentation on them I think i'll leave the pouches etc black to blend in with the theme? it may not be as visually striking having them mostly black/grey but the skin areas and hair along with the blades when I finish them should be enough, they're mostly done now, just need to touch up and do a few other parts sashes etc then I'll buy some warriors ;-)

what have you been painting? blog's been quiet of late!

Damo, those are some sweet DE! I really dig the grey tones on their outfits. I also love how you claim they're not tabletop ready. They look really good, bud. I've been out of the Dakka loop for a min, but should be getting back to painting sometime relatively soon. Thanks for some inspiration! Keep it up, you continue to impress.

Well I finally got a job back at my old company but as a contractor and not a permanent employee.
It's a 2 year contract so it will be for awhile.
As for painting this past 2 weeks I have been running around getting paperwork done and getting my medical clearance ( I work in a hospital environment ) and since this week is my first full work week i have been drained . So nothing to show my friends this time.
But loving what you did with the DE and as for the bags keep it black remember they are not like thier rainbow relatives who have the look at me look at me moto .
Remember the Mel Gibson Road Warriors look that should be the rule in my eye when doing these guys.
What you are doing is awsome and wouldn't change a thing.
Keep it up

Oh wow!, two awesome and excellent positive comments! thanks guys, i do honestly appreciate them! I'm glad you think they're good, it's these types of comments that keep me inspired to keep painting when I feel i'm going in circles. I am still only using my 'quick' methods and tricks for this army as I want a simple uncluttered look to them, I plan on painting them as the Kabal of the mirrored blade, or close to the scheme to count so the kabalite warriors will be done with army painter plate mail primer, followed by badab black washes from the airbrush mixed with thinner, it gives a more dull look and can nearly appear black if I overdo it, then boltgun highlights and gold accents with blood red sashes and spot colours thoughts?

Yes GD1 I also had a kind of mad max feel when deciding on them too! beyond thunderdome was on t.v a couple of weeks ago, must have lodged in my subconcious somewhere! I will leave them mostly leather black body suits even if I imagine i'll cop some flak over it during the course of the project as it will just appear primer black but with you guys on my tail I should be kept on the correct painting paths!
I'm also really happy for you to be working again! I hope it goes great for you and you don't get too exhausted to paint! it'd be a sad day to have you fade into the background when what you've been painting lately is so damn nice to see!

Moltar! get in the loop my friend! more paint! needs to be done! or do i need to send you more metal mini's? i've got a Sefadu gang I reckon i'll be sick of real soon!

Hi everyone! I have a quick question for you all regarding my painting of the DE? in my mind I've worked out a scheme that's along my 'quick' painting styles and will be easy to do and hopefully look good, but, i'm also tossing up on using another of my quick styles as well, firstly my original concept was to assemble them all with army painter plate mail primer and then hit them all with badab black and thinners from the airbrush, then detail and highlight as necessary? hence Kabal of the mirrored blade was born? orrrrrrr, my standard 'ol technique for black seems to look good on the wyches and would imo look nuts on a whole force of warriors and vehicles giving me good options for adding a spot colour to give them some appeal, I really want opinions before i start painting as tomorrow i'll be assembling hopefully all the DE models I just bought :-)

So, what do you think will look more evil and sinister whilst still maintaining enough oomph to make people have more than one look at them? the other bonus with black is that i can then use metallics on the guns!

I eagerly await your thoughts everyone!

Actually, I'm really interested in your experience working with washes from the airbrush. Whenever I've tried to do that the washes seem to dry exceedingly fast on the inner workings of the brush itself and it turns into a huge mess. I spend far more time cleaning than anything and it's just not worth it.

If it works for you, how do you do it?

What I may do, as i do have relative success with using the airbrush and washes, how i do it Gits is how I imagine anyone does? pop some GW wash in the pot and add some acrylic thinner (vallejo) until it's a smokey runny mix and just spray away making sure it's dry between passes, sometimes i do (as we all do ) get excited and it pools slightly if i go with that method (which is now likely) i'll take some pics and pm you

Hey there Whalemusic, long time not much see as I said i think i may use the black scheme as it'll be hopefully more striking on the vehicles and make the spot colours really pop out at you (yes,...YOU) but how about I do the Incubi in the mirrored blade scheme? to differentiate them from the main force? what do you think? and if i do the warriors black with red waist sashes, is it completely juvenille of me to name them the Kabal of the sundered scrotum?... hmmmm ideas?

back to you guys and more opinions......

I've been here the whole time, just had nothing constructive to add as its all been awesome

I'd do your Incubi in the same colors (maybe a mirrored head?) as your main force, was just thinking it might be a fun challenge to try a metallic army. I think the black could still even be used on the fabric colors (like almost all of the wytch armor) and in other spots. Your current style works very well too though, so nothing wrong with that at all.

After thinking about it some more (i just went to the airport and back) I am really liking the idea of just having the incubi in metal with black helms! just imagine the stannic armour topped by a sinister black helm with glowing red lenses! Ooooh! scary! even the horns will be black and faded to the top to reasure the viewer it's a helmet and they're not Daemons! now i need some! :-)

And really, i must thanks you for saying that you've been here but it's been awesome! that's kind of a good compliment when you see it and go... "hmmm everyone else has said it!"

and the plus plus plus of the black scheme on the whole army will be the speed with which i can churn it all out! sounds like it's challenge time!

Now, what about kabal names? I'd like to put it out there for everyone to suggest names for my Kabal! they can be serious ones or funny, as long as they sound at least half plausable to use for my army! it could be quite fun to see what we all think! :-)

Kabal of the screaming lamb
Kabal of the sundered scrotum?

Ideas for you Damo, well shiny metal bits like you been doing its like a distraction for their victims "Ooooh look at the shiny metal thingy " then shenk! ! they get shanked like a pig!!
You already on the right track and don't want to make the model to busy unless it's a HQ or elite where you want your opponents quiver in their boots when they enter the board.
Keep up the awsome work Damo! !

Hi GD1 :-) I liked the "Ooooh shiny metal thingy...shenk!" but I think i'll make that for my Incubi, so they look more elite, and the warriors scheme will be back to my comfortable black and red splashes :-) the good thing is with all the segmented armour they wear it should look good on them, I assembled my warriors last night so i can start painting them today, I am also toying with the idea of all the bare headed dark elves having it look like they have all wiped their hands in fresh blood and streaked it across their faces? I do have tiny brushes to do it? :-)

Also, anyone have any of those Kabal names i'm after? remember I'd like a bucket load of funny ones and 'real' sounding ones too, I know for a fact that there is a basket of bright creative Nerds out there to pop on the thinking caps (you know, the ones with the propeller on top!)

I'll post up my progress late tonight guys!

Oh, and GD1, where's you painting! getting slow mate! i'm missing your work! :-)

Great work WM360! I love the Kabal of Rebecca Black parodies! if that doesn't strike fear into the hearts of the imperium I don't know what will! and Kabal of Questionable outcomes made me laugh too! the thinking mans Kabal!

Kabal of hope devoured
kabal of blackest dreams
kabal of acerbic aliens
kabal of appetence of torment
kabal of the bruised hallax
kabal of algology

again, you pick the serious ones, a couple of funny ones hidden with big words!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Good afternoon my fellow Nerdlings! I sat down and tried to churn through as much assembling and painting as i could today without going crazy! and i may add I think i did pretty well considering I assembled and started painting 10 kabalite warriors split into 2 5 man squads, and made my own blaster from the bulb at the end of the blast pistol and the body of the shredder, thanks to Akroma06 for the tip! got the 3 reavers together and started and also assembled 2 extra wyches, with the few i have already started I added them to the squad so i now have my full 9 man/woman Wych squad now correctly armed for the table and I started to assemble a raider, got the main vehicle done just need to build and add the warriors hanging off the sides ready to pick up the takeaway at the drive through

I managed to give the warriors and wyches 2 coats of badab black wash, so we can see how dark it makes them and how the details stand out, I think next i'll highlight the armour plates and bits with fortress grey and then give them another light wash to blend it in the vehicles I want to get all ready to wash with the airbrush all at once but I'm doing the squads with the brush so i can control the flow on the plates I'd also like some input as to weather to paint the certain metal parts in gold or silver? and which parts, i'm thinking gold/bronze on the shoulder pads? just one or both? have a look at the pics and see what you'd do and let me know

so, here are the shots, clear as i could get as i was a little shaky today for some reason, probably as i kept stabbing myself with the pointy bits when i tried to scrape mold lines and burrs off the bits!

firstly a group shot of the days work:

The warriors as they look at the moment:

The extra 2 wyches, with razor flails and cc weapons:

The 3 reavers, one using the weighted flail from the wych kit, looks cool

And lastly where i'm at with the raider:

So I think (correct me if i'm wrong) that i'm making good progress with the army, i mean they're not going to be as well painted as my salamanders army but i think they'll still be worthy and fun to look at for everyone and I absolutely can't wait to play against nerdfest11's Blood angels army! Heh Heh Heh!

Kepp it damp, blend well and I'll see you again tomorrow!

Hi Kitch102, nope hasn't been asked for a while all i do for that effect is use a can of GW Chaos black primer and a can of GW Skull white primer, no airbrush with these guys so far, but i just spray them black and then when it's dry give them a pulse or two from above with the skull white to act as a highlight, then it's just a soft brush and so far 2 washes with badab black, I managed to assemble and get to that stage with what you see there in a day next step will be some highlights added with fortress grey and a small brush. any other questions or if you want more detail just PM me dude and I'll be only too happy to try and help you

More Kabalites! yes, got into the warriors this morning for a couple of hours and got a great deal done and can really see the whole direction for colours with this army, they almost look quite Romanesque with the choices but I think it suits them well? the gold/bronze is nice and the redish loin cloths look good, I'm not painting them like flayed skin as i don't like the look of it on them, next up is highlighting the gold with gold/mithril and the armour with fortress grey, then it's onto the eyes! so they're nearly done, maybe another paint session and they'll be there? should i paint the eyes like my sallies? or red to yellow to white in the centre? like the chaplain helmet I worked on ages ago for my Exemplars?

all in all, i'm happy with how they look, another quick tabletop army they should be still able to hold their own looks wise I hope! but without spending years painting them!

enough Nerd rambling, I should get them from the nerd lair and take some Nerd pics and pop them up eh!

that's it at the mo dudes, i'll be trying to bust out some more brush moves soon for yo!

let me know what you think!

Very cool man! I'm loving those DE. Great choice of colours. They just work so well together. For the eyes I would suggest using another colour like a blue or green to offset the rest of the scheme. Paint the gems that way too. Maybe try Ice blue.
Really awesome work these DE look great.

Thanks flying Pooo, i think the scheme will look really cool on the vehicles hopefully :-) I'm still not sure about an offset colour but I think being dark eldar i'll keep them quite subdued or at least a more sinister colour? the green could work that you suggested? which parts were you thinking? the eyes? and i think there's only the one 'gem' on their shoulder plate, but again, i'm not sure if i'll pay too much attention to it to keep them quick to paint.

But, you never know :-)

Blue or Green would look nice IMHO, but more sinister colours are very Dark Eldarish if you know what I mean. Do what you think looks best though. It would look great both ways.
I thought that those round bumpy thingys on the gun were gems, I was picturing them in a light bright colour blue or green with a type of OSL effect. That would make the minis pop. But i don't know if that is what you want with a Dark Eldar Army.

Cheers guys, good feedback! @ Flying Poo, I think the knobbly things on the gun is the power pack so I can see how osl would look good, but i think it would take me too long to do properly on each model and i want to get these bad boys and girls on the table quick so i can destroy Adams Blood Angels! and I think I'll do the eyes red/orange but I'll try and do a set green to compare them then they'll be done and it only took me a day to paint ten of them.... yay
And Gits, thanks mate, I have done the bases now very simply, just glue and then some very fine modeling ballast in a brownish red colour and I just need to paint the rim brown and they'll be done until I get some static grass to look similar to what you do, kinda like a desert mesa? easy!
Hi kvlt Ghost, thanks for dropping by I like the sashes myself too, and you're right it's much more hygienic for them especially as their armour is hooked and screwed into their own flesh so they could well be susceptible to infections?

speaking of armour everyone, I have been looking at them lots (as you do!) and I'm not sure about both the shoulders being gold? should i paint the one on their right sides black to match the armour or does it look o.k? are they 'Dark' Eldar enough? or are they just a tad too blingy? I'll be interested to see what you all think?

thanks everyone hope you're all doing well and getting organised for Christmas? only 21 days to go!

Hey Nerd =) Been away from dakka a bit. Great seeing your blog's still going, as i love the schemes you've got going. The dark eldar are awesome. I think the black looks better on them than the space marines, probably because of the details in the armour. Might have to re-read your recipe for black, and adapt it for an Eldar bug i'm getting =p

As for the shoulder pads, i think if you changed 1 to red, it would look wierd, and if you changed both, it wouldnt look as good as the gold. So i say leave them as is.

Keep em coming mate!

Hi guys cheers for the feedback! Pyriel, why thank you, from you that's a pretty big compliment! I didn't want them to be too 'clownish' but have a regal sinister air about them, hence the gold and black, I mean these guys are the most arrogant egotistical beings I know of so i figured they'd be keen on having wealth shown on them as well as being stealthy and blending into the darkness! I hope the whole army blends when i get them done!
@ whalemusic, hey dude, thank you too! and yep, lots of vehicles, I have 2 raiders, 2 Ravagers, 4 venoms to paint as well gonna be fun times in the near future! but i'll be painting the vehicles in units, so i'll try and do the raiders and ravagers as one and then the venoms together too.
@ s'jet, welcome back! I'm glad you like the schemes and my painting at the moment! I think you're right the armour works better as it's more detailed and if you re visit the recipe for your force i'd be happy to help any way i can? I like the way it looks, I tried ading some highlights on the edges with fortress grey and it looks o.k but a few are a tad wonky and once I'd started i had to do each model! pics during the week!

catch you all soon!

Cheers GD1 and Majortom, good to have you guys on board for the ride! i'll try not to torture you too much for your essence of pain!..... too much, just a little though, you understand right?

Glad you like the models, and i'm guessing they should stay as they are? not too garish? I'm looking forward to painting the vehicles in a massive batch very soon! now that will really look cool all together!

any ideas as to what i should have gold/black/red on the flyers? especially the raider/ravagers? i'd love some input

Dark Eldar awaaaaaay! just a small update on how i'm going with them, I started basing them, but still have a bit to do on them, painting the rims and adding some grasses and whatnot, I also managed to paint the eye lenses on the warriors and assemble my other raider and crew and get them both undercoated and give them the white spritz ready for the black wash next week (maybe)
And I also made my Archon just from bits I had left over, I actually don't mind how he looks, the agoniser really makes him stand out as a special character and if I paint him up nicely he'll stand out well

Well fistly I'll just show you the raiders and crew:

Crew:

Archon (still working out a name for him?)

And here's the warriors, I have also just assembled another 10 of these bad boys/girls. the eyes are better than they look, i'll try and get a better pic soon!

Cool, that's all for the moment everyone, as usual comments welcome! hope you like?

Thanks Mr Pooo, I tried one in green and one in blue but the red looked the best imo, which was lucky as I feel most confidant painting those colours :-) I have my next squad all ready to go as well, so next week should see a fair bit them finished! the army is moving quite fast (as they should being Dark Eldar!) and after christmas should see all the vehicles seeing some action!

Well now, you have been busy haven't you?
I have to say, I absolutely love the Dark Eldar your doing.
Its a nice color choice rather then the same old black or dark purple usually associated with Dark Eldar.
Keep it up my friend!

Cheers Mr Mal, I should have heaps more to show soon! I might keep it under my hat until the christmas rush is over :-) I'm glad you like the scheme too, I'm going with the theory that these DE are a very arrogant race and while they enjoy the bloodletting and pain, they want their victims to see them as superior to them in looks and martial prowess hence the gilded armour over a shadow black body :-) and what appears to be a loin cloth soaked in the blood of their victims..... nice!

Really like the colour scheme of your DE nerdfest. I actually picked up a DE Megaforce the weekend of their release...impulse buy really though I'm not touching it till I'm done my BA army. Going to be hard resisting seeing the great work you've been doing with yours. Any plans on gettings the HQs or Elites? Some of the models like the Grotesque are amazing.

I'm doing a cut and paste archon, and using some warmachine cryx models as haemy's I can't recall the name of them but they look suitable and can be painted evilly!

That's a nice bits archon too by the way, have you got any background for him? I find it easier to name my characters once they have some history

LOL, I think the pain engine is a term reserved for the mother in law.
For the cryx models I think I know which ones you're talking about...the Brute Thrall? I used to have that model in my WM collection, never got around to painting it though...was a good looking model though and would make an excellent stand in for the Grotesque.

Thanks Giraffex, I wanted a base colour that improved the overall colour scheme of the warriors, and i felt a reddish brown desert base would do, I was going to do the ruined city style but it looked too dull and they didn't really pop with the base done like that

Hey Kitch, cheers dude, I can't wait to see what you do with the new box of warriors too! I'm going to try the method with other colours tomorrow like we discussed earlier, and hopefully it'll work I should try and work out some background for my Archon, I kinda like the name earl Va'al of the something something? eh! might need some tweaking

Great work NF!

I like the dark red's contrast to the bronze/gold. Are you planning on adding anymore colors to the soldiers? I'm not sold on only having one color for the armor although having one pad in bronze kind of works.

Hey Knightley, I'm going for the k.i.s.s method this time so i can get them done quickly, apart from the bases which aren't finished they only took me about 4 hours to get to that stage! :-) so i kinda don't want to clutter them up which i'm scared i'd do adding more colour? and I like how they look as a squad like this, i'll wait until I get some more troops and vehicles done and reassess the army colours then, I'm working on the raiders today so i should hopefully have some pics end of the week for you have a look at and let me know what you think? i'm working on a rough idea for the vehicles that incorporates the armies colours without being too lairy with the gold/bronze (what is it exactly?) :-)

Thanks for your feedback dude!

Just a thought for coming up with DE character names, you know how they're just a random string of letters? I'm looking at the periodic table and thinking how that can be used... for instance...

Archon Cral-Ar Li'os of the XXXXXXXXX Kabal

Made up the symbols for chromium, aluminium, argon, lithium and osmium.

Just a thought, I always struggle to get random letters together that sound xenos enough, my archon was initially called Dave Jackson, took me months to come up with something else!

Merry Christmas dudes and dudettes! I sincerely hope you all have the best of days and I want to wish you the very best of health, luck and well being for the new year! eat lots, love lots and spend time with those you love! and if you're lucky there will be 40K under your trees!

And now i have the smallest of medium sized updates for you! huh!

I got painting gold! yep, based all my gold parts in snakebite leather then gave 'em a shot of burnished gold followed by that beautiful magic of Devlan mud! I think I got the ratio correct for black to gold? should I put some glyphs on the raider? i'm not sure yet, a lot of others do it but I kinda think my scheme doesn't need them but i'm keen to hear suggestions and of course when the rest is done it may need them
here it is all loaded up with the feverish pain high denizens of commorragh!

Now just sittin in dock waiting for me to get paintin'!

Also got the gold on my warriors too!

and my Archon, I know he looks like a regular old hekatrix but honestly he's not! he really is the leader of my Kabal, he just likes to blend in before he kills! which is hard when.....

You ride around with a guard detail of tough as nails Incubi! thankfully they're not armoured with finecast! seriously I hate that stuff, these were my first models in it and I don't like it one bit! all the Klaives were bent to hell, and the trophy racks were too bent to even be able to use I tried to straighten them but only got so far, so I started building them anyway, I wasn't gonna crack a big teary over the racks, so here the boys are getting ready!

That's all the painting I managed today, i still need to re do the gold and highlight it all, and of course act on any suggestions from you! I may do some later but i'm kind of stuck in a massive Zombie phase at the moment, I am watching the Revenant and it's o.k so far but my favorite is the mtv series Death Valley! it's bloody brilliant! so good! but sadly while i was checking my Zombie response team gear and placing my MA65 Machete back in it's sheath I didn't concentrate and kinda cut across the inside of my fingers, not real bad but bad enough to bleed for about 15 minutes and be in a really awkward place on my fingers

I wish i was allowed to post non gaming pics too! I took some really nice shots of my dogs the other day and they look so sweet! if anyone can be bothered i'll send you a pm with them I know I know i'm rambling now, but it's nearly christmas and i'm excited! I'm sitting here with the back door open while the breeze rolls in and it's warm and muggy outside! I better go before i end up just writing my life story and try to solve the worlds ills!

catch you all again soon! hopefully with some finished models!

Damian

Really looks fantastic Nerdy. When I do my gold or bronze I usually prefer sepia to delvan as it's a little less... well... muddy looking. However, I think your choice actually fits the grey of your base color better than sepia would. I am quite envious at how quickly you make progress at a high level of competency.

Merry Christmas, hope Santa fills your stocking with all kinds of warmongering goodness!

Merry Christmas to you guys! :-) thanks for sparing the time so close to christmas! I did try the sepia but it made the gold a touch to yellow for my taste, I know that sounds kinda silly considering i'm painting Gold but I wanted a more brassy look to them to convey a slightly aged and ingrained appearance to the armour, like they've worn it long before they fell :-)

I may use the sepia when I go back to my Sallies to make them nice and bright in contrast, especially as they have others to polish their armour for them when not in use!

Hmm, yeah Gits, these guys are quite quick to produce I just haven't had any time to paint! I'm hoping to have the entire force completed by the start of Feb! which will be a challenge, but at least it's tabletop so i can cut corners as long as they look appealing to me and everyone! :-)

I am personally looking forward to seeing all the stuff you've been doing for your boys! it sounds great, at least it's only one more sleep to go (for me at least!)

Merry Christmas Eve!

Que enya music!..... Sail away, sail away, sail awaaaay!

I tried painting my sails today, I was inspired by Mechanicum Jon's blog on his DEhttp://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/378881.page and although I didn't copy his exact style i tried to work something similar using his explained methods so thanks Jon! I like the way it looks, sadly as usual the pics got a bit flat and washed out when taken I just struggle sometimes to get a clear shot that portrays the effects accurately! enough misery, I like the way they look as they give it a bit of colour, I was originally going to leave them black and shaded with a constellation on each one so they remained very dark and evil! but as i said, I got inspired! ah, the beauty of this fine hobby!

here they are, the first blurry one is a more accurate portrayal of the darkness of the colour

I also just started on my reavers, just blocking in the colours and where I want them, I know they shouldn't be that uniform but I may change it as i go depending how it pans out!

sorry it's been a while between drinks with my blog, I've been a busy nerd and I've been desperate to get a chance to paint and be inspired by everyone else, i'm quickly getting to the point of being overwhelmed by models i know need to be painted! so i am determined to finish at least the raiders soon! then the other warriors and finally the reavers before I start in earnest on my Incubi and venoms! 5 Venoms will be taxing!

i hope everyone had a great Christmas and nothing bad befell you! I also would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a Happy new year for tomorrow night!

hope to hear from you all soon!

Hi dudes, I am still undecided about runes at the moment, and i don't think i'll weather them at this stage, I like the DE to appear haughty and perfectly maintained (no slouches here!) I may try some glyphs on the reavers to denote some individuality amongst the riders? But i love the sails :-) the more i look at them the happier I am with how they look! it's just what i needed to keep me interested, sadly I got distracted with watching Cowboys and Aliens and haven't painted today yet, but i promise I won't keep it so long between drinks!

"Oh wow! He's done it better!" Was what I first thought when seeing your sails. Great stuff! They really give the impression of sailing through the mystic energies of the webway.

On thinking about it a bit more I decided that there were merits to both our approaches (somewhat recovering my shattered pride). What makes your sails visually pop is your combination of the dots with a great blending job. Mine were designed specifically to avoid blending and give a more naturalistic look. So together we've got sails for both your arrogant spit and polish Kabal and my, equally arrogant, gritty and antique equipment obsessed Kabal.

By the way there's some fantastic stuff in this thread, I'll be looking throught it soon!

Now, that's a compliment! thanks you very much Jon for having a look at what i did! I'm glad you like the end result, and the blending was a lucky accident too, if you do get a chance to browse my blog you'll see i have a particular method I always use to paint black, and it combined well with the base coat of p3 sanguine red I used for the sails and it blended really nicely, so, i just was lucky but i do like the effect! and i must say, my models don't even come close to how yours look, i love the way everything you paint ties in so well with each other and 'sara' is brilliant! if we were in an arena battling it out, i couldn't pull my blade before you gutted me! make sure you visit back soon and i'll try and get more done!

Blood god indeed! it was a strange accident, watching death Valley with a mate and he was asking about Zombie apocalypse gear and I showed him my machete but was talking as i re sheathed it and cut myself! I tried not to make it obvious i'd done it and just crept off to the bathroom to bandaid myself up and you really like my colour scheme! thanks heaps GD1 that's saying a lot from you! you don't think it's too boring? I should have some mandrakes and all my 5 venoms this week too to start on! Now, when are you Dakka updating? c'mon man! get with the program! i'll update when you do!

Warboss Gutrip
Those sails look brilliant.

So damn jealous of your paint-foo...

Thanks warboss, thanks for the words! i'm glad you like them, have you seen Jon's? he's the one who i learnt the idea from and he's a master! they really suit the DE theme imo, I need to work on my paint foo a bit more as i've been mega non inspired and slack, i've got heaps of stuff to paint, like a whole salamanders army.....

Alright LDP, just because you asked nicely :-) I'm home tomorrow and friday so i'll work on my raiders some more, I would like to paint the decking and finish that off so I can research and add some realistic effects of blood spatter and gore as if they've dragged victims from the ground and slit them before launching their warm corpses and some still barely alive off the edge and into their comrades below, sowing fear and discord among them!

wow, you really ARE a good painter. I considered the old DE models hideous, and many of the new DE models somehow MORESO.

I think that's the sign of a true painter - you are able to paint a DE army in such a way where you would actually want to field it without hiding your head in shame.

This, I would field gladly.

Also, where did you get that strange orange sand from?

Hi Ailaros, thanks for checking in! I appreciate it and the positive comments! :-) it's always a nice feeling when someone likes your work, especially when they like it and they don't usually like the models! makes me all warm and fuzzy! lol

lets hope the next stuff i do you like just as much! i'll be starting the floors in the raiders and adding some gore, lets hope i do it well and not too overdone, I'll be keen to get some feedback from everyone about it!

and the sand i got from a local hobby shop, it's in the train section, i'll have a look when i get home from work and I'll let you know what it is or i'l take a pic of the bag and PM you. it's nice and fine and a great colour to accent darker models! :-) in fact I'm inspired by your models and am myself starting a 'red' army to paint up as well as my DE and my sallies and I'll base them the same but with some cork mixed in, looks pretty good for a very simple base, the De ones still need some tufts of dry grasses and blood spatters on some.

catch you soon eh!

Update time! got some Mandrakes in the mail yesterday and never mind the fact they suck in game, they're bloody awesome models! I love how they look and they weren't too bad for finecast either, much much better than the Incubi I got, only very minimal bending of the weapons and the sickle did snap partly when clipping them, but that's no worse than other models!

I had a vision of painting them with my method for black, and lo and behold it looks sweet! so far i've only primed, sprayed and started to wash them with ink, but i can totally see where they're heading and i like it! i'll be giving them purple bale fire too as i found some purple drawing ink in the shed!

here they are so far:

And I did some great work on my DE that i'm really pleased with! I wanted to add some 'tasteful' blood spatters on the decking of my raiders to convey them dragging victims off the ground and gutting them and launching the bodies off into battle! I found some old drawing ink in the shed which i used, it was brick red, and I found a black one too and made my blood by firstly using straight red to get my desired pattern, then mixed in some black ink and GW 'Ardcoat for some glutinous shine, I added more and more black to show the darker fresher blood and where entrails would lie and the bodies bled out, I like the end result, I have since these shots added another coat of 'Ardcoat to add some more shine

So, do you think I got it right? does it still appear 'natural' enough?

that's it for the mo dudes and dudettes! I hope you like, I'll work more tonight and tomorrow and hopefully give you more later! let me know you're feedback!

catch you soon

Blood looks good, especially for older dried blood. Good shade of brighter red around outside and darker stuff in the middle where it would have dried thicker. Very realistic! Your DE must've been getting busy.

Cheers guys, I've since added some gloss to make the gore look fresher :-) I would have in hindsight liked to add some small lumps or bumps to simulate actual 'bits' of victim! Mwahahahaha! but i'm pleased with 15 minutes worth of blood letting!

and FP, i've made progress on the Mandrakes :-)

Eggy, you bet those skinny sadistic sods have been busy! I'm starting to get the 'ol need to paint feeling back!

Now that sounds great it would be even better because I have a good friend by the name of jirc, who seems to be painting up some cadians! it may encourage him more if i do a real space raid and slaughter his troops before he can get them on board!

Finished Mandrakes! oh boy oh boy oh boy! I loved painting them! although I did see that i didn't paint the hooks on their flesh dresses! so does that mean they're not done? eh! lets just say i've fixed it and it's alllll gooooood!
I used the purple ink I found with the other drawing inks in the shed and it worked well for the bale fire, I like the skin, i like the hair, I painted it white and then washed it with watered down fortress grey, then badab in the recesses and re highlighted with overbrushed white in places, so over all finally I feel good about painting at the moment and I hope it carries on over the next few weeks, if it does i could get heaps done!
My next step is to finish at least one raider and it's crew, then move on to the warriors and Incubi, then Wyches again and then Talos and Venoms!

here they are with some close ups of the blood on weapons and a couple of group shots of them melting out of the shadows and charging across the kitchen bench!

And now onto some School shots of the bad boys! just a pic of each of them to show you

There we go everyone, i hope you like them, they took me about 2 hours 20 minutes to paint the squad over 2 days and i think I did them so quick as i was enjoying them come to life and they looked how i imagined in my head before i started them,

feedback/comments always welcome!

talk soon dudes!

Thank you everyone, the Mandrakes are one of my favorites that i've done so far! I think they look close enough to the GW interpretation to pass as being a good job (apart from the hooks i forgot!) and i don't think i went silly with the blood, just a small spatter as i can see them being really quick and just slicing at their victims before moving onto the next ones! I can't wait to have them be killed in a game, i really wish they were better :-(
I am glad the flesh 'dresses' look like flesh too, I was a bit nervous painting them, my original idea was to have them look like hessian or linen and have the bottom edged look as if they were soaking up all the blood from their victims they spilled!
All in all from everyone's great words i'm very happy with them and maybe a little bit proud of them! even though they didn't take that long to paint! should i feel guilty about that? Nah! :-) i'll just enjoy them and get onto the warriors now!.....

Hi Ailaros, I just finished your pm and i'll be responding shortly! as for my flesh skirts, I used elf flesh mixed with fortress grey as my base coat then darkened the recesses with dwarf flesh then washed the whole lot with ogryn flesh and devlan mud in the deeper parts and highlighted with my original colour watered down so it was still kind of transparent, then just added a touch more elf flesh as a final highlight, i think the trick was to keep the coats very thin and almost see through, then i added some blood spots and did the little bits of touching up here and there

Good evening folks, and welcome to another update on my blog! this weeks menu includes and entree of Dark Eldar served on some lightly painted lion cloths, followed by a tasty main course of a NEW MARINE CHAPTER for me! yes, I have been creating dishes in my mind that I need to cook! feeling armoured giants shake the earth as they stride across the desolate wastelands of distant planets!
I couldn't resist, and needed a quick fix! I looked at my Sallies and wanted them to feel the caress of my brush, yet something darker called me, a chapter steeped in apprehension and fear, a chapter loyal to the emperor but teetering on the brink of blood lust, a chapter who's single minded purpose in destroying their enemies left nothing but bloodied chunks of barely recognisable flesh in their wake! they are red, they are not Blood angels, yet they share their primarch, they are the feared and brutal..... Flesh Eaters!

But firstly, lets take a look at the DE, I wanted to get my plan in action and finish what i started, to get inspired by my own hand again, my first point on the agenda was the finishing of at least one of my Raiders, this I didn't do, but with good reason, I started finishing off the loin cloths on the crew, and got carried away as i had the red out, and managed to finish all the loin cloths on all the models I had assembled I also managed to do their eye lenses (not quite as well as the first squad ) and block and wash all the metal parts, guns/chains/canisters etc...
All that's left is to highlight the armour and paint the sheathed knives and faces, but anyway here's where i'm at with them...

First the crew for one Raider, this is the big crew, my other one only has 3 members.

Now onto the Flesh eaters, I managed to assemble and prime and wash the whole squad with Devlan Mud, and using my 'quick' method of painting the Blood angel I worked out for a fellow Dakkaite, I wanted to try and finish the sarge of the squad, which I duly did!

This was the original marine I did for the experiment, now with added markings!

and now a selection of pics of the finished sarge! I really like him!

Well, there we are my guests, I hope you enjoyed the menu? I hope to include more 'Flesh' next time
comments welcome as usual and I'll be talking to you all again soon!

And those Flesh Eaters they look mint! For a moment there I thought you wrote Flesh Tearers, and I was thinking don't they have a little more black in their colour scheme?

I looked up Flesh Eaters on Lexicanum and what little fluff they have is really cool.

So are the Sallys finished now or will you still be working on them?

Thanks Sigur, I know what you mean about the mono marines schemes but I think once a few more get inducted they'll look pretty sweet all together? and on the plus side it means i can get through them a lot faster. The face did take a bit of concentrating on, but I think I did alright, he looks intense enough for a Flesh eaters sarge!

This is my 'quick' method of painting red armoured marines, this guy took only half hour to do, a little bit more time and he'd come up sweet as I've since spent more time on him and the sarge in my previous post, i'm seriously considering making these guys my main marine army I can paint them to a standard i'm pleased with and do it rather fast, so i may or may not sell the sallies i've painted, time will tell, i'm torn

righto, start time!:

this is what i started with, one yellow marine! I didn't strip him as he was pretty smooth with not much paint.

Now this is about how far you need to have the model from the can when you use army painter primer about 5 inches, if it's too far from the model the paint dries before it hits it and if it's too close then it obscures the details (I sprayed outside too not inside ):

Here he is all primed up and fresh, nice even colour and he took all of about 25 seconds to do! a lot quicker than brushing on red for an hour per model!

here's the first wash, one coat of Devlan mud over the whole model, just be careful and use your brush to move the wash off the large parts so it doesn't 'pool' and put in into the recesses:

next up pop some blood red paint on your palette and water it slightly so it's milky consistency:

now use that to go over the parts we will highlight, I usually do the knees, the feet, top of the legs arms, helmet and shoulder pads, but as we go along you'll see them clearer, you can just see on the edges of the pads how it looks.

now, add some blazing orange next to the red and blend together, you'll be able to see the original red this way and make sure you've got a good highlight colour that's not too bright to start with
here you can see the original red in the top right and the original orange to the left, the highlight is in the middle

Next up, add this highlight colour over the parts we just re did in blood red leaving just a small amount of the original highlight showing, you can see more clearly now where we are going to add the highlights on him:

Next highlight is adding more blazing orange to the previous mix we did, it should be nearly all orange now and be quite bright, don't forget to keep the paints mixed with a small bit of water each time too.

O.K now it gets serious add another small amount of vomit brown to the mix we just did, it'll look like 'wow' too bright but don't worry, as now our highlights are getting smaller and more along just the edges of the armour plates.

Here, you can see the armour nearly all done, it may sound like a long process but it's very quick to do once you start as you're adding colour to the previous mix each time and the highlights get smaller and thinner, i also recommend when highlighting the very edges of the panels to use the edge of your brush to parts like the shoulder pads. I also painted the chest eagle vomit brown too, it makes a god base to paint gold onto otherwise gold can look patchy and not cover well at all. and don't forget to paint the armour joins with grey and wash it with black too

Well, that's pretty much it! I painted the burnished gold onto his chest and when it was dry i washed it with devlan mud and painted his eye lenses, first with snot green then added a touch golden yellow and painted it towards the front of the lenses then a touch more golden yellow and painted just in the front corners finished with a small dot of white at the rear of the lense, you can see in detail my lenses on my blog at the start here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/356350.page then I just painted the bolter metal and washed with badab black, painted the rim of the base with brown foundation paint and added some cork I blended up on top and he's done to what i would call good table top quality and he was quick! if you need any more info or want more detail on what i did just ask me I don't mind at all.

The only other step i used was to wash all the red armour with Baal red to tie it together more, I actually managed to get another 2 marines done today in less than 2 hours although one need a bare head painted!

@ldp: I'm giving them red chainswords because it's how the force is represented in the old pics i found of them from RT days! I'm hanging onto what little info i can glean on them, there's not much out there....

@ Ailaros: Why oh why do you want to know how to paint red? good god man, your reds are awesome! this is just a way i tried to do it to help out a fellow dakkaite who wanted a hand, i like the way it looks, especially on the table all based up it's not crazy good or fastidiously blended but it doesn't need to be and looks clean! tanks will be a challenge though!

Not really a model update, but something Nerd hobby based nonetheless I just got some new Ink, I designed it a few months ago and wanted it to represent things important to me while still being appealing as a design by itself, and since i've been into the hobby for *egad!* 17 years now, I was under no illusion that that needed to be represented in a fashion that isn't too grim dark the roses, angel wings and and flowing hair all symbolise things close to my heart, but the brushes! that's ALL NERD BABY! took less than 2 hours to do around my other wrist and finsih that sleeve off and freehand my design and ink it in, he's pretty fast and when he asked about the brushes and i told him about 40k he was quite interested and even made me show him some of my models on the web!

And now a small blog related sentence to keep you happy, it's nearly my day off work, in 5 short hours i'll be driving home! my plans for today apart from sleeping for a couple hours are, to assemble 20 tac marines that i am painting for a good friend, finish off 2 flesh eaters and get pics and also finish the armour and base the other kabalite warriors for the DE, then on friday i'll do 3 Flesh eaters and faces for the bare head dudes, and finish the raider and add the crew so it's done!

lets see how i go.... anyway here's my new Tatt:

No Gits, not colour, just black and greyscale work to make sure it matches in with my other sleeve :-) although my original design was colour I felt this style was the best road to take...

Still cool, and the monochrome makes you focus on the design rather than getting distracted by a riot of color. Though, color on the little paint drips (with the rest being black & white) might have been a nifty touch.

Got working on a larger project for the Flesh eaters! a redeemer! I wanted to make this one a bit different and more detailed to keep me inspired to paint it well! and I was fortunate enough to have in my possession some great Chapter House Studio LR doors and hatch! these things are awesome, they fit really well and are beautifully sculpted, I also had in my bitz box some Scibor bits to fit, these were not quite as nice but fit the theme, I was going to add the top additions but couldn't as they didn't fir flat and obstructed the open hatch on the top, plus i didn't think it needed them with the other parts

Here's some pics for your pleasure, i shall start the painting tomorrow!

these are the parts i'm not using, they could've been a bit too much as well with the other doors, and the details aren't quite as clear as i'd like to be able to paint them well.

I also managed to work on some more Flesh Eaters! not quite finished yet but well on the way to having a squad!

There we go everyone, I hope that keeps your appetite whet for more? i'm looking forward to doing that LR! and i hate painting tanks! so that's amazing for me!

talk soon everybody!

wow, that chapterhouse stuff is pretty sweet.

A question about your speed red, though. If you're going from straight red to straight blaze orange doesn't that make your reds look really... orange?

I know digital cameras take to red like cats take to being slathered in canola oil, but in my mind it would seem so.

Wow, thanks everyone! lots of people on today! Yep, the CH stuff is great quality and really easy to fit well, and for you Ailaros, I don't tend to go from straight red to orange, I do one mix in between and then wash with baal red at the end which brings it together and hides any blend marks I kinda don't know what ones I like better between the new flesh eaters and the DE? i'll wait until i get more done! I quite enjoy bouncing between the two armies! I can't wait until I can paint the tank some tomorrow!

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to see what i'm up to! i'll respond with more when i'm not at work! Shhhhh!

Now with more Landraider! not exactly sure where i'm going with this one as far as highlighting goes but i'll wing it and see where i end up, here's a good half hour work, mostly masking stuff up, needs a fair amount of touching up on the metallics but it's at least got some forward motion now.

as usual, comments/feedback always listened too

And these are the passengers for the LR, nothing much to date just getting ready for a wash.

I like this shot, it shows the marines colours better, I did it to get a feel for where to highlight and how bright to go compared to these guys, so if i can get the LR to match the armour then i'll be stoked! looking forward to days off again, I'm going to work on a few bare heads, i have the notion in my head that a few more than you normally see remove them to smell the blood in the air and feel it's warm caress as it runs down their face in glorious combat! i'll attempt to give them all some stubble and a rougher looking visage than most of the ones i've done.

Peace out, keep painting.

Thanks saky, glad you like them as much as i do! :-)

@who, I use masking liquid to weather and leave some smaller parts under the paint, I looked at heavy machines and how it looked and they had slightly bubbled paint on some parts where the rust or water had leaked into the paint, i usually have the metal underneath more weathered and rusty but decided against it this time and then promptly did everything else the same! :-) whoops, never mind, i hope you can forgive my oversight!

The weathering on that LR looks good I think. But are you going to put some dirt on it as well? Not too much I hope - but some dirt/mud on the tracks (and/or lower part of hull) could look good.

I do have some westhering powders and might add some light dust along the treads and lower edges, but i don't want to go overboard and have it look too far removed from the marines in the army, so it'll still be fairly 'clean' :-) but yes i shall try some.

Teeny tiny update timey! I got some bits in the mail and managed to assemble my captain who will be a 'counts as' Seth, using his rules, I love the fact that if your opponent rolls a one he exploits the opening and basically kicks them in the balls or gives them a nice headbutt! I've armed him with twin claws as I felt this would be good representing the whirlwind of gore attack seth can do with his massive chainsword and plus it looks great! I'll be working on some bare heads this week so i'll get some painted and then post up pics so we can choose the correct head for our nasty little captain here!

I did something else a bit different too, i wanted to paint my heavy flamer template, so I did, I put some water on it and then dropped yellow ink on the narrow part and dark red on the fat end then using a soft brush I kind of swirled them together, then with a crumpled tissue I blotted off the excess which left the tide marks in a random pattern and made it look like billowing flame, all up it only took 5 minutes!

as you can probably tell, I'm starting to get into the swing of it again and i'll be updating again later this week, I'm also working on a project for a mate of mine and as I get some more paint on them i'll see if i can show you guys as well.

Keep your brush moist dudes!

On the Redeemer? Damo actually has it right, the flamestorms go in front. The Crusader and Godhammer are rear, as are the Helios and Prometheus, though the Achilles is forward as well.

Yeah, they all have "proper" set ups. The Ares is also up front, but requires some major conversion as there is no kit, and the Terminus Ultra has the Las cannon up front and the normal LR Twin Linker in the rear. I think that's all the current modern style LR variants (official ones anyways).

Hey guys how's everyone going? I'm feeling good, I appear to have some of my painting mojo back! it's now back to where it should be! drifting off to sleep and thoughts of what i'm painting tomorrow dance through my mind I've got 3 projects on the go and i'm still happy with my progress, today was planned as only painting my bare heads, which I duly did, some i feel i painted well while others just don't quite feel right, don't get me wrong i'm happy with how they look or I wouldn't be showing you but I may re visit a couple to touch up some parts mainly some eyes need a bit more attention, depends how I feel when they are on a marine

Which brings me to my next question for you! I also managed to about 90% finish my master! he's just got the tidy up details to go and he'll be all done and ready to use Seth's rules to kick my best mate in the nuts BUT, what head suits him best? I've painted 5 today and have taken a pic of them all resting in the armour with corresponding letters, can i please get your opinions as to which one looks best? i'd like reasons too if you have them, I've got 2 in my mind I like but I think it'll be good to see what you all think first which head best suits a chapter master with a penchant for extreme kick assery .

firstly the armour to date, should be done tomorrow:

Now onto the heads:

I wait with anticipation on your responses! lets get this party started!

I like the first one the best. Might just be the paintjob but I think it's the most suitable. Last one isn't bad either. Also, you really really really need to clean the flash off the end of the claw - it's very noticeable in the first pic w/o any head attached.

Keep dreaming and planning the paintjobs

Great looking faces. I'm impressed. They all look good imho - and I got a reason to pick each of them... But if its help you want then I'll stick with the others and vote A. Much easier that way.

Btw, did D have too much steroids? There is something very odd about having the first thing you see in the morning be a mini staring right back at you.

edit:

Had another look and there really is something there. It shows how much the positioning of a head means to a mini. Or is it only me?

I think that all of those heads all look nice on him, except the one that makes it look like he has a moustache growing out of his nose!
However if I had to pick, I'd say the top three are 1-E, 2-A and 3- C & D tied. Any of these heads will look awesome on him! Great work man.

Hmmm, seems like the most popular is A for the head or E, I'm not really a fan of the head with a mustache and while I like the deathwatch head and the paint is probably the best one, the mouth kinda gives me a blow up doll vibe?.... :-) I really need to buy a new brush tomorrow and re do those eyes! my fine brush developed a distinct bend even though I stored them correctly and everything! grrr it kinda made it very hard to do, and i not surprisingly ended up with a bit of 0_0 going on! never mind at least their (and the master) are nearly done now, another quick go with a new brush and they'll be all good.

oh, and Eggy, flash is fixed now too, I found a couple of bits that needed touching up as i was painting so it's much better now :-)

I'd vote E, closely followed by A, then B, C and D.

The paint job seems to let B down (only compared to the others!) - and I do like the match of hair colour to the back thingy (sorry, I play Orks ) But I think I have something against the bowl cuts - hence E.

D is really strange looking - perhaps just the angle?

After much grinding of teeth and swapping of heads in and out I have decided on..... either A or E :-) i'm still deciding!

I'll take another pic of each head in the armour again and pop them up later, maybe a new pic may be more conclusive?

@Arakasi: head D was the best paint imo, but it's the a metal head and is the one I thought has a 'blow up doll' mouth! it's just a tad to big.

@Gits: hey dude, I tried to get a collection of them as I plan on having a lot of bare heads in my force, I got the metal deathwatch head and I shaved some silly bits off some sw heads, I need to keep practicing again as it's been so long since i did faces! i've got my sarge's head to use as a benchmark, i'll chuck a couple of the ones I've just done out as i really aren't happy with them! :-( but at least i've got 2 or 3 to use, you don't have any different heads in your bits i may not have seen before do you?

LOL, Ailaros! nicely played sir! well you'll be happy to know 'fart head' has been assigned armour and now resides in tactical squad 'cenobite' where he looks much better! but firstly I snapped a couple more of those heads A & E in the master's armour, I think I've decided on a winner but we'll just see one last time.

First it's the gerard Butler, kick ass and take numbers I got a hangover head!

next up it's the jason statham i'll use a bat and me fists I ain't asking for trouble but I'll bloody well finish it! head!

So that's the candidates my friends, everyone else shall be given armour and a squad to join, here's a couple of mock ups I may use depending on the results...

AAAaaaaaaand just a little something I'm going to work on I was given a busted up land speeder by a Pyriel and i couldn't save it so i wanted to terrain it up a bit! so this is the start of the concept, I wanted it to appear as if it's hit the ground and ploughed into the ground killing the pilot while the gunner, even with a snapped arm tries to arm a grenade to kill anyone who gets close! FOR THE EMPEROR!

Oh and here's 'fart head' in new armour.... much better don't you think?

Alright then everyone, that's me for the night! more soon.....

Oh I have my means...plus a 200mbit internet hard line at home usually helps

I know, I know, your internet speed fluctuates wildly depending on how fast the little stream outside turns the electricity generating wheel but at least you have something nice to look forward to

Had a spare ten minutes today and rushed off to my bits box to create a model I've never built before! I wanted to make something individual with stuff i've accumulated from swaps and gifts, i had a few parts in mind to use and I believe they work nicely together to create what i think is a pretty cool Techmarine! i'll show a couple of shots of him without priming then a couple with prime and a wash to see the details.

Chapterhouse helmet, Chapterhouse pads, iron hands legs & intergrated bolter, mk3 torso, marine backpack, servo arm Bitspudlo.

There we go, not crazy much today but I'm looking forward to tomorrow! I've just started a week off work and i plan to get a bit painted and updated and posted! but tomorrow I'm getting some proper shots done of all my completed work to pop in the gallery and here on my blog, so hopefully the pics make them look better! I can't wait to see how they look

see you tomorrow!

The Gits residence runs on hamster power!! Got several dozen of the little buggers chained to electricity generating exercise wheels.

Tried that with my cats already and I must say the solution is far from as energy sufficient as it looks on paper.
You see when the buggers slack of and slow down I had a cattle prod behind them so slowing down would make them connect to it, get a jolt and thus, run faster.
Point is that the charge that made them not slack of is also produced by their running thus the system eats it´s own generated energy.

Also, all the food and *sigh* rest breaks they constantly need not to talk about overfilled litter boxes just didnt make it worth enough.

Now days a friend of mine runs in the wheel and there is not even any need for spending electricity towards shocking him not to slack of, the sight of me playing with a loaded gun is enough to make him run for ages.

Photo update time I went to my cousin ange's today and she took some shots of my models i've been working on recently for me! I'm quite happy with the results except for the new Flesh eaters i'm working on, they are still w.i.p but we had a go at them anyway and as usual the red colour was very difficult to get a true representation of how it looks I mean they aren't bad but it's still hard to see the highlights and blending!

I'm pleased with how the Salamanders turned out, the colours are vibrant and they just look cool!

well, onto the show....

firstly here's some of my Dark Eldar models, some of these are still works in progress like the raider :

Now onto my sallies, a bit of Dev squad love and a few of my dreadnought and the speeders! i'm really happy with the speeders they are a couple of my favorite models apart from the fact they are a pain in the bum to assemble and you often get gaps! but at least the blending came out nicely!

Now here's my current project, the mighty Flesh Eaters space marines! these are a w.i.p as you can tell by the lack of squad markings and bolters i'm stoked with these boys, they look nuts in person! really cool scheme, it's a lot of red but it works for me! i've got another 7 bare heads to work on next week as well, so you should see some more updates as i start and finish my Terminators!

And heres the big boy! this Ork Warboss was so much fun to paint, and he's also one of my favorite paint jobs i've done to date, I just like the look of him, I can totally see him bellowing a challenge across the battlefield his goggles glinting ruddy in the glow of ordinance.

And lastly here's me! Ange wanted to take a couple of shots that display my personality! she's working on editing another one i'll pop up later that i really like but for now here's Nerdfest09.....

thanks for checking out my latest pics everyone, I'll ,love to hear what you think of them, I'm pleased with all of them and am inspired to get painting again, i hope you enjoyed the browse!

I think i'm learning slowly from all the AMAZING painters here on Dakka! all the little tips, tricks and methods that have been shared with me is why i keep coming back to dakka, and not to mention all the good mates i've made! including everyone that reads my blog to see what i've been up to! it feels good to get some pics and now i've got to get more painted to do it all again!

You are getting really really good dude. Most impressed.

But who the hell is that bio titan with marines climbing all over in that pic?
By Jove (or possibly Jupiter), a truly disturbing sight least to say.

But then such a meek bio titan wouldnt be a match for a handful plastic marines, it surely cannot have more then three wounds and a 6+ tshirt save and no more then a puny strenght statistic to match

Now that todays grand insult has been accomplished I can retire to my most lavish sleeping quarters for some well needed rest

Your turn good Sir Nerd, your turn *mwahaha*

Oh, did I mention that you are getting ridiculously good at painting? A clear and steady improvement from your earlier days of fumbling around with a paint brush. By now you rival the best on dakka.

I better go to bed now...

Nerdfest09 - Awesome looking models! You've definitely progressed and improved a lot through the pages since you've started this blog. One of the best things of long running Dakka P&M Blogs is seeing the progression in the painting and modeling skills of a hobbyist and yours is a prime example of this. Keep up the great work and am looking forward to seeing more pics of all three of your armies!

Why, my heart swells with pride from such lovely comments! Pyriel, honestly you have been a massive inspiration to me again and again over the last couple of years I've been back painting, I've been taught and amazed in equal measure by your work and always look forward to seeing what you paint next! I'm just as happy that you can actually see a marked improvement in my own painting, especially as it's something i enjoy greatly and take pride in showing when i believe is a good job! but i'd hardly say i rival the best on Dakka! not even close!
AH, the Bio titan in the last pic! the image doesn't come close to showing it's true magnitude! and you are mistaken about the 6+ t-shirt save! that's a 4+ invulnerable save my friend! the distracting day-glo brightness confounds enemies as they try to penetrate the command node protected from harm by thick glass and iron! although you may be right about the strength characteristics I do understand that it's a bio titan that has the jink special rule!

thank you to Eggy, for much the same reason as Pyriel, your BA have been a catalyst for some of my own work, namely the Marines Exemplar i did stemmed from buying a basic airbrush set up after reading your blog! your level of quality and photography astounds me and I love seeing how you approach each new model with your distinct style! I hope my work that follows is as entertaining and good enough eye candy for you and everyone else that enjoys painting!

Thanks again to all! i shall be painting more this week off work! I have a terminator squad and 7 bare heads to paint up!

nerdfest09 wrote:Hey guys how's everyone going?

Now onto the heads:

i'd def go with hea e buddy really good skin tones amnd excellent stubble wrk

I wait with anticipation on your responses! lets get this party started!

I wanted to work on just the one model and finish him, so i did my Termie sarge for my assault squad, it looks gritty and p'd off I could only get one or two decent shot with the weather today, hope you like him!

I also surprisingly started and got a bit done on the 7 bare heads! i only planned on laying down the base colour and washing them with ogryn flesh, but in the end I nearly finished the skin tones on all of them! sorry about the poor pics, I had trouble focusing on them with my camera!

hope you can see where they're at, they'll be finished tomorrow with another 2 termies, i'll update pics tomorrow for you!

Quick pics this arvo guys, i finished (well, 95%) 7 heads, I didn't paint the eyes but shadowed the sockets to give them depth instead, they could be a bit smoother but for tabletop quality they're great they look excellent in armour when i dry fitted them, so i'll finish the terminators and then glue them in and touch up what needs to be finished once they've put on armour!

catch you later tonight! more updates tomorrow.

Got some slightly better photo's of the bare heads dummied up in armour, as well as started some work on my honor guard and chaplain and did some more termie armour work!

termie armour:

Next up is the beginning of my honor guard, just poses and stuff:

Chaplain work, i'm going to assume he has a crozius somewhere on him!

my take on the saguinary novitiate

Nothing special just a melta to the face!

Now the heads... again, I still can't get a bloody good pic though

Oh and lastly, this came in the post for me today! I've never built any of GW buildings before so if anyone knows of a good step by step thread i'd love to see it!

Nerdfest09

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh and Gits, I did a fair bit of looking for what bare heads are around before i started and the ones i'm using are from the Blood Angels/death company, the standard marine bare heads, the metal deathwatch marine head, and space wolves bare heads with some of the Mohawks and weird hair bits filed off, the only other ones i haven't got this time are the Captain Korvydae head and lufgt huron one, I can't think of any others i've missed?

Update on my Termies, I finished another 2 today, so i have 3 finished now and have started on the last 2, I also popped the other arms on my honor guard, they should be pretty nasty, I have one with a bolt pistol and chainsword, one with a combi melta and chainsword, one with a chainsword and plasma pistol, a sanguinary novitiate and a banner bearer all trooping along with the chapter master who is using Seth's rules! can't wait to get into cc with them!

Here's everything so far i've painted for my Flesh eaters army, not bad so far, a full 10 man tac squad, a lone tac marine, chapter master and 3 termies as well as started my Landraider

Oh and I'm considering selling my DE army i'll start a swap shop thread with it all if anyone's interested.

Thanks Mortalitas, I buy all my models from http://www.thecombatcompany.com.au/ or http://www.blackcultist.com.au/store/index.php online, sometimes if i find a bargain on the swap shop I'll grab it, but my main shop is the combat company, they've just got great service and are really helpful!
