Hey Damian,

The photos turned out really well, shows off the minis to great advantage.

They do also show up a few minor areas for improvement.

First thing is the red, it's got a lovely vivid feel to it and the highlights work nicely but it lacks a little depth in places. If for example you look at the PF Marine from the side on shot the shoulder pad and helmet are both quite flat.

I think a light green wash or two would help give the red some depth in those areas like helmet crevices and also help give you a subtle shaded tone for some of the plates that are angled down (i.e. underside of the forearm, shins on inwards sloping legs etc.)

The second thing that stands out for me is probably some of the detail stuff. Using the guy below the side on PF Marine (the one with the excellent face & white hair) as an example I think for a minor time investment in painting details such as the gap between wrist and hand black, would really pay off in overall looks, same with the elbow joint/ribbing on the same guy.

I also think you could get a lot for a little by adding contrast to details such as the skulls on bolters or the pipes on the helmets in silver. If you want something less fiddly painting the casing or just the foregrip of bolters in black might help provide some contrast.

The last thing is the zapping of the armour with the zenithal style white spray. It's a great trick that gives you a nice army in very little time but I think when you do it without the entire mini assembled you need to pay a little extra attention to areas that get shadowed after things like weapons and arms go on.

The thighs of several minis are a good example of what I mean, especially from anything except dead front-on. I think an extra wash or two on those areas, or adding some ink to one of the three washes you already do, might tone those sections down a little more so they don't stand out so much.

Now that seems like a lot of criticism I know but it's all minor, niggly stuff that is going to consume extra time and as such, may not be all that important for you and a tabletop army. The army looks excellent so far as I said earlier, especially in the group shots, the red and black contrast well and the zenithal zap and wash technique really looks like it's paying off!

As an aside, did you do something to irk your postie? Niall turned up in my mailbox today with his box ripped and battered and missing his base and your address crossed out.

Thankfully he's alright, so I can make a new base for him and send him again later this week with some sturdier packaging, I'll let you know when he's in the post. But maybe smile at the postie next time you see him, eh?

S*itallmighty, that is some serious painting Damo. The salamander is really impressive, I will steal that green recipe for some of my own minis as it will go well amongst my own darker green sallies.
You are getting seriouslly good at this by now, keep it up and golden deamon is next.

I agree with SCC about the red though, you need more depth. Better highlights by mixing in yellow and white to blood red and deeped/darker base red by starting out with gore red, blood red and DA green in a mix that looks nice. Think of it as the sallie green amour, you want to achieve the same effect of dark and light play but with red and reds are very difficult to do so with unless you play with mixtures of green, yellow and white.
Gore red works for the darker tones and blood red for the lighter but that´s just my own style. Last time I did that was on my old GKS:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery-viewimage.jsp?i=131381&m=2&w=800

You can probably find better red recipees, just ask people around here till you see somehting you like and use it.

The multi melta guy is excellent as well he stands out really nicely.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Wow, thank you everyone, I'm happy that mostly you all like how they turned out and the 'criticism' has actualy been helpful and instructive (cheers SCC and Pyriel ) I know exactly what you guys meant about the highlights and depth as I can see it myself and always say 'i'll get to that' especially the leg armor and the ribbing joins I really just get too excited and forget it! this army was a bit of an experiment for me though to see what results could be achieved with minimal work and layers that's probably why my red can look flat on some as it's only primer/devlan mud/blood red/blood red & Orange so if I added more steps I hope I can get that shade you are talking about but I think i'll do that on some 'stand alone' mini's and keep plugging away at this one as it's only my tabletop army so i don't go crazy spending oodles of time on each one I never thought of green to deepen the red either but i should have realised when pyriel said use red to deepen green! it just goes the opposite way for red! duh! I think so far to date i've been working on it start to finish for about 9 weeks? so I am happy even though I have those smallish areas for improvement, but hopefully for a quick-ish tabletop one you guys approve? I will buy some more marines and put a the question out there of which chapters to paint them up as, that way I'm only spending my time painting one mini at a time using the hints and techniques that you guys have happily helped me out with! my next one is going to be an Imperial Fist marine! Ahhhhh, any ideas for yellow? I am glad though that the Sallie turned out well and I hope I can produce some more that standard!

Thanks again everyone for liking my work and helping me out with everything including inspiration and hints tricks and encouragement! I've still got a few models to go so the show's not over yet! then i'll do the learning thing and post up my progress with the teachings from two awesome artists SCC and the ever enigmatic Pyriel then hopefully it'll be 2017 and Necrons will be released! yay!

@SCC: I think maybe they don't want us to send anything to each other or they're short on cash and are making us pay double!

Cheers everyone i'm off to try and get some more finished today!

I think if you can add some of the flare you showed in the salamander to the tanks (the place where i dont think the red 'pops' enough) you will have an amazing looking force. As in my opinion the infantry are perfect.

Apart from maybe the assault marines standing on the tall cables. You need to reposition the feet if you want the guys to look in flight.

Thanks Perkustin, tanks were a bit hit or miss as it was first time using the airbrush for anything so I kind of experimented with masking bits off and I totally agree a couple of panels look flat as! but overall I can forgive myself I may re visit them and try and fix it later but right now i just want to finish my army and learn the game :-) and thank you for liking the infantry too! I like how they look for models that don't take very long to paint, i do however agree with scc that the joins need more care but eh! i'll get there one day!
assault marines do appear a little standy but it's not as bad in actuality, again first time trying pinning anything or using a pin vice! did you know LR crusaders have an annoying amount of barrels to drill? :-)

cheers dude!

More small update on Tac squad #2 nearly all done, 8 tac marines finished and based and only heavy bolter dude and the vet sarge to finish, sarge has helmet at his feet with chunk blown from the side and what will be a wound on his head that now looks like tomato sauce! I gave him the puppetswar chainsword arm but i cut it in half to get it to look right, I don't have any brown stuff to fix the join yet so i'm painting it up anyway and i may go and do it properly later when i get some, but i need him for the first game i'm playing in what will be years! and it's against Tyranids, it'll be about my 3rd or maybe 4th game i'm not sure, but whatever happens the chain arm is counting as a power fist as I didn't have any!

And thank you to everyone else who has commented and like the marines! I think they worked well for what was my original goal for them! to make a 'decent' tabletop quality army as quickly as possible that still looked cool and was a little different! couldn't have done it without the teachings of a few venerable Dakka-ites you know who you all are :-)

now i'm going to FINISH painting those marines to appease the Dakka gods of sarcasm!

Results from my first game in years! against the Tyranids of tyraneil! they invaded and laid waste to an imperial city, Marines Exemplar were sent to try and stem the invasion, but alas it was not to be, first turn looked good for our hardy boys in black and red wiping out a chunk of 2 squads of genestealers but were then within range of being eaten and lost men to the fury of their claws, the terminators then swarmed from the raider to attack the trygon and successfully wounded it and tied it up for a good chunk of the game! bad dice rolls were everywhere today and kept everyone in combat dancing around each other slicing and firing shots where they could into the melee! soon the Tervigon began to convulse and spew forth termagaunts from it's swollen leaking abdomen, soon a squad of 16 of them were harassing my librarian and dreadnought, and again everyone got lost in the swirling fights and were tied up again without victory! the genestealers decised to up the ante and spurred on by the glands on their back they decimated the tactical squads that were challenging them! soon it was obvious the city was lost! and chief Librarian Tomas called for a tactical withdrawal to conserve the future of the chapter to regroup and mourn the loss of the billions of lives already consumed by hive fleet Milani, not without pause to one day continue the fight another day on another world! result- loss to the Exemplars

Haha! (Said in the voice of Nelson from Simpsons)

I did however think of something you could have done that may have helped you. You deployed your Marines way too close to my Nids. If you had kept them back (maybe not even put them in transport) it would've taken me a bit longer to reach you. Giving you more time shoot at me from afar. Should've put your land raider to use as well, that multi melta could've changed the result. I'm just saying...

thanks Bullyboy, good to see you back here! I got those pads from here, there pretty nice aren't they!:

they're built for power armour but I just super glued and squeezed really hard to get them to sit reasonable on the terminator arms!

I'm off to work out my list for tonight where Librarian Tomas shall be chastising his troops with a wet fish after the performance yesterday! and I'll attempt to take some shots and do a bat rep, never done one before so if I don't think it sounds good.....but i'll try!

Also, if anyone is even the slightest bit interested, i worked out exactly how long it took me to paint an entire tactical squad from grey plastic to based and ready for battle! I said I wanted to do them quickly but still look the goods, well, I managed to crank out the squad in a total of 4 hours and 39 minutes! not bad I think I didn't include the assembly time as everyone is different when cutting off the sprue and neatening things up, but the actually painting didn't take long! sometimes i amaze even myself!......

Keep painting guys! may the emperor protect!....well, may he protect Tomas tonight!

Oh boy, we´re in for a rough night as the general himself hardly had the time to open his oh so wise mouth and already the first mistake is made. Bolter shells dont go well with nurgle marines, they might get tickled by them though.

How the **** did you manage to do that?
I´m lucky if I can make one rank and file mini in that time and that is without a base.

I´ll give you "protect" you bum. I´m starting my GK paint blog tonight and i have no clue how to do it or what to do in order not to scare people of. The Marines Exemplar were en route to battle the forces of chaos when.....

*vox report* *transmission intercepted*...ot....aos,....I repea.....not chao....., jammi.... trying new..... *vox report terminated*

The Exemplar sat on the command deck, his blue armor glistening a shade so deep the stars were lost in it's sheen, Librarian Tomas listened again to the fractured report, "secrets and lies" he spoke under his breath, "scan all frequencies in east sub sector and bring up on screen" his gauntleted fingers drummed on the edge of his chair while waiting for a response, the servitors and astropaths hurried about, fingers and data cables clacking as they were passed from socket to boosters in response to his request, soon, an image made of text appeared scrolling in the air in front of Librarian Tomas, "good, hold image at 90.1 and continue scans" he spoke, quickly assessing the words floating in front of him, "it appears we were very nearly confounded brothers" he said to no one in particular before rising quickly and turning to the deck master "page the squad leaders and first company, instruct all battle brothers to prepare wargear and intone rights of battle with the chaplains, we go to war not against the foul forces of chaos at all, but a xenos threat we didn't expect".

A pneumatic hiss announced the arrival Librarian Tomas in the briefing room, the assembled marines nodded in respect as he sat, "this shall not take long brothers, we prepare for planetfall in 4 hours, after scrutinizing the reports our techs deciphered it appears the chaos incursion we expected is not to be! how or why this information was passed to us is yet to be determined, but it seems it was xenos, most notably the tau empire, my guess is they were attempting to jam the signals so as the mayday call didn't reach us on our barge! this shall not stay us now we know who we face, but it shall fuel our fury, no longer do we prepare to face the arrogant flaunting of chaos but the sneaky and underhanded tactics of the Tau, make haste and study landing logs and I shall meet you in the launch bay in due course"

The scent of oils and thick slabs of metal permeated the air as marines and tech servitors prepared for planet fall, brothers fully encased in ceramite armor nodded to one another, the deep red of their arms barely visible in the gloom of the dimly lit launch bays and the black of their armor lit eerily from within by their glowing eye lenses, they were ready, grim, resolute, and eager to do the Emperors work.

One by one, drop pods and thunderhawks left the bay arcing along the planets atmosphere mixing the contrails with the plumes of gas and clouds that shrouded thier approach.

Tomas was strapped into the lead chair in the thunderhawk, as mission commander he was making final calculations and preparations before landing, everything looked in order, west city Evandalus Prime, rich in mining materials and massive stacks of hydroponically grown vegetable and nutrients, they shall land behind what was once a penitentiary and advance around the south, A light glowed from the rear of the hold as vox speaker crackled to life with monotonous words... Ten, nine, eight, prepare for impact, seven........

This report is pretty abridged and i'm only going to roughly explain the events as i didn't take my camera for shots so if it jumps a bit don't worry you won't have missed much!

This was how the match started! the Marines exemplar landed and deployed, rhino's rushing through the rubble of what appeared to be a furious fire fight, imperial guard corpses littered the ground and large craters impeded their progress, Librarian Tomas attached himself to a 5 man tac squad of newly inducted marines while squads 'the deathstalkers' and 'the cleaners' rushed towards glimpses of blue in their rhino's, while venerable dreadnought 'Maundis' tried to sneak his bulk along the right hand edge of the buildings there, the terminators waited on board ready to strike down when needed and the Landraider crusader trundled his armored might into the firing line to distract the fire warriors peeking from cover and assault squad 'Valin' was preparing to use the ruined penitentiary as cover!
first turn saw the two battle suits enter the building the assault squad was using, Tau commander and his retinue of shield drones approached without fear of the marines, while the Tau's broadside targeted the landraider but failed to mark it or hit it at all! likewise the sniper squad who targeted the dreadnought although another squad did manage to light up and destroy a rhino forcing squad 'the cleaners' out and on foot for the remainder.
Assault squad 'valin' then bravely assaulted the two battlesuits in the building, and with the emperor on their side proceeded to destroy 3 drones! Librarian Tomas used GoI and transported his squad to land near a large horde of clacking beady eyed Kroot, whilst the intended target was the broadside suit this didn't deter them and they prepared to battle, the Landraider moved at speed trusting it's armored bulk to weather the storm of fire it was going to receive, and the Tau didn't disappoint, firing with a full squad and a broadside they all failed to penetrate and only chipped the paint.
Tau returned fire and picked off a few brother marines from 'the cleaners' as they were in the open, combat continued in the building with another drone destroyed by the assault captains mighty power fist!, Kroot rushed forward leaping over barricades and swinging the long blades on their rifles in wicked arcs aiming for Librarian Tomas and his squad, surrounding them they proceeded to squawk and slash at them their white milky eyes bulging pink around the edges as the fury of killing took them, but thankfully only one brother was felled with a rifle blade puncturing between his gorget and helmet!
Tomas returned the favor by casting smite and grinned as he watched three kroot spasm and fry, the avian forms smoking from open beaked mouths and a smell of roast chicken wafted over the battle.
More assault followed from the battle suits against the assault marines and finally one marine was shot from the air crashing into the ground broken, his heavy jump pack having crushed his spine and burst both of his enhanced hearts! as the rhino containing 'the deathstalkers' skidded to a halt the turret gunner firing into the fire warriors there, the squad disembarked and took up defensive positions around the transport ready to spring into assault next turn, the fight continued against the Kroot with another brother falling as his brother to his left avenged him only to be cut down by the shaper!
Venerable brother 'Maundis' was hit and couldn't move or shoot and managed to barely turn around while his components forced his armored body to spin back and forth without locking onto anything,
finally assault squad 'vandis' degeated the battlesuits and drones, the sergeants power fist striking down the majority of foes! they then checked coordinates and consolidated towards the squad firing at 'Maundis', it was not to be though as a shimmering haze manifested behind 'Maundis' transforming into a squad of stealth suits which proceeded to destroy him from behind (that's gonna hurt)
sensing the battle heating up, Tomas instructed the terminators to deep strike down and avenge the death of the old one, but alas, tragedy struck and the entire squad was destroyed in difficult terain! a sad day for the Exemplars,
Never fear, the battle was almost over as tactical squad 'the deathstalkers' decimated the fire warriors and chased them down, assualt squad 'valin' took out another sniper and moved towards the stealth suits, the Kroot overpowered the rest of Tomas's squad and started eating them, bloody flesh hanging from beaked maws, mortally wounded himself Tomas fell to the large predators losing blood and fading fast I imagine he crawled to cover and tried to re direct the battle before passing away (his future while grim means he may fight again) the stealth suits finally finished off the assault sergeant and the battle slowed, brothers scanning the field for enemy troops and blue clad figures flitting between barricades, soon the ground appeared empty and while losses were great on both sides the tau had left the planet, neither side could claim victory today and a decision to draw was recieved from above.....

Well that's sort of how it all went down last night!

here's the update on my chaplain (who has a name released when finished!) and my speeders! I slightly changed my ideas on the speeders color schemes but it should work out, although i don't think they'll look as good as my raven Guard ones i did but they were so long ago and were a happy accident!

And an update on my chaplain, looking pretty good now I think and with a bit more work he'll scrub up nicely!

catch you all soon!

Thanks Gits, yeah, I kinda ran out of termie bases so just glued him to a normal base, he looks really short next to his battle brothers! which reminds me to buy some more!

I´ll be sending you a better thing to use as a crozius.

Thanks Tomas! that would be really nice! which goes against everything you stand for doesn't it .......

Did nothing on my models today had to go and buy all the appliances for our new kitchen! so there goes all my money for the moment, now it's just the builder to pay and the inconvenience of having the old one torn out and replaced until i can get back into it properly!

until soon!

Cheers dude! glad you approve! it's funny how now i'm looking at it all differently, my original goal was to do an army in the quickest way possible, and while I think i've done that with them i've noticed that there's a lot of parts i've rushed through and obviously could have done better, flat parts on some reds and details like armor joins and shading, the larger pics do bring them glaring to the surface and while i'm still not unhappy with them I find that the parts I believe i've done well such as the faces and lenses which I did spend time on look really impressive and i wish 'now' that instead of speeding through the entire army in 9 weeks I should have taken my time and really painted them with perfection in mind rather than speed sadly it's this train of thought that's impeding my progress with the last parts of my army, should i shelve the speeders and dreadnought until i'm inspired to work on another force? or do I just finish them up as with the rest of the army and be happy with them as a neat gaming force? I find myself also bending now towards spending time on individual models such as the salamander I painted for Pyriel, he was really enjoyable to paint and the end result was some of the best i've done imo and now i'd love to learn from the masters and see how good I can get! would my blog followers welcome the change? what would you like to see me do?

a) continue the Exemplars at the current painting level?

b) leave the current force and start to progress my skills updating in my blog with individual models to gift to dakka-ites?

c) use the remaining models i've started to begin another force?

d) give up and just be a troll for a while?

or anything else you can suggest! I know I shouldn't beat myself up about it too much but I know I can paint well and seeing some of what i've posted just kinda bums me out when I see it and I want to give a good impression of who I am and what I can do! my biggest hurdle is/was losing interest in them when they took too long but now I've got an army to play with (finally), sorry this post has been a bit negative and mopey but I reckon now with a great base of friends who have been following this blog and helping me through it all with suggestions and help, I think maybe I can slow down now and give back to you all to say thanks and work on some miniatures to impress you guys and hopefully myself! so please don't leave me just yet and lets get me back inspired to do some more!

can't wait to hear what you'd all like to see, i'll check back later tonight!

Hey Damian, how is life treating you at the moment?

In my opinion, go with option A. So far, your models have been awesome, the whole look of the force is really great, the colours you have chosen are very original and I think you should stick to this army for sure. I have always found the hardest part about finishing a force is not finding the time, but simply motivation. Your process of painting these guys hasn't lessened their look at all and you have managed to stay on track the whole way through. I think you should finish the army, get a photo of the entire force all painted up, post it on here and feel proud as hell as we all post on here our praise. Then, as time goes on and as you move onto other projects, come back and repaint anything you feel really needs to be redone. You could use it as relief painting, when you get bored painting something in the future take a break and touch up the armour joints, something along those lines. As a whole I really love the army, you should be super proud already! Great Work Nerdfest, keep it up dude, there are heaps of guys on here just like me who get super inspired by your constant progress! Hope you had a great weekend, James

Yeah dude, keep it going! A all the way! Maybe instead of feeling dissatisfied about your painting of the exemplars, perhaps just add a few subtle highlights, washes, blends or glazes somewhere? But believe me, your stuff now is great! I don't want you to stop.

P.S my tactical squad is finished

Hi James! thanks mate, what you say does make sense, and it's really nice to know that people use my models as inspiration! I never looked at it that way before strangely enough! as i always just saw others work and tried to imitate it while hoping to interest others with my witty banter but i digress, the finding time bit is hard as i've only got one day a week to paint if it's free! so i don't like spending what would end up being 4-5 weeks on a single model or small squad, but i will finish what i started and post up a pic of everyone ready to fight! and in the meantime i'll start the individual model painting i thought about I'm keen to paint up an Imperial fist for Bullyboy76 as I said before i have never painted yellow armor before either, i'd also be glad to paint up a marine in a chapter of your choosing to say thanks for being open and constructive while being positive and following my work at the same time! it's not gone unnoticed!

thanks again

I have never really been able to stay on top of painting my armies, and, to be honest, am quite jealous of your work. Not only have you been getting models done, but they're done pretty quick (a challenge for me) and I think that they look great (also seems to be hard ). I think that you should do whatever you damn well please, so long as you post your progress To me, the whole point of this hobby (and it may be "the point" for everything too, but that's a different post) is to have fun and enjoy doing it, so if you aren't having fun, make it fun

Well with only one day a week to paint you are doing even better than I first thought, that is a truly epic effort, really cool man. Motivation and not getting bored are the 2 hardest things to over come in my opinion, and you have owned them both and not reduced the look of your models at all. Ha ha ha, that's cool man, I'm currently working on space wolves, I really enjoy painting them but still cant decide on a final colour scheme, I have about a dozen different wolves all painted up differently. I think I've chosen one I'm happy with, just trying to find a nice fast way to paint them. I would love a wolf all painted up by you, it would be an honour. I would paint one in return for you but my skills are still in the grass hopper stage, but I'm getting there!

Well, James and Prime you have both buoyed my spirits considerably! and James I'd be bloody stoked to paint you up a wolf! in fact i'm gonna go look through my bits and start organising him! I think I may have felt better about the army if i hadn't spent so much time on the bits i really like? I know it sounds kinda backward but it's those parts that make the rest appear inadequate in my eyes! so my decision helped by you guys is this, I shall slowly finish the Exemplars with what i've accumulated and also just have a short break from them by painting up a space wolf for Jiirc and an Imperial fist for Bullyboy76! this way I get to test myself and do something nice as well! then i can go back to them and keep them as a gaming force I can be proud of, actually I took them to my local club the other night and had my first game, a draw against Tau and someone saw them there and wants me to paint up 40 steel legion guard with tarnished armor and red great coats! he hasn't called me yet but we'll see what happens there

thanks again guys, i'll get cracking on something special

Matey...I vote a bit of A and a bit of B.

Continue with your force because they are rather nice and the end result will be well worth it.

But the bit of B - I know variety is appreciated, so treat yourself by doing the odd individual thing and one off for folks. That way it gets you past your mass of red and black!

Why do you think I bounce between so much stuff?!

Red-White-Gold to Purple-White-Gunmetal to Blue-Gold-Yellow to Bone-Blue to Brown-Black-Gold to Gunmetal-Green!

So, now i've got my models on the way for my paint up and give away, i've sort of got a small list of some chapters i want to paint up, using my patience and really trying to do them well, so far i'm working on an Imperial fist marine for Bullyboy76, and a 13th company style terminator wolf lord for jiirc, so that leaves me with 4 suits of maximus armor left, i'm thinking I may do a nice blood angel to work on my reds with help from Pyriel and SCC here on dakka and give it to my best mate Nerdfest11 :-)

Heya Mate.

Look at my Gallery. Look at the Imperial Paladins.

Do something in that sort of dark blue - same sort of blue scheme that could be applied to Night Lords and Crimson Fists - the bright blue is far too overdone with Ultras everywhere but there's very few decent dark blues out there. Would be curious to see what you make on that sort of blue.

Split schemes mate, kill two birds with one stone

I have a (very small) Brazen Claw army - quartered red & blue, lovely scheme that and there have been a few really nice Storm Lords armies (half and half white/red with yellow helmets) popping up recently that are pretty inspiring and would certainly offer plenty of learning opportunities. Sons of Guilliman (blue/white quartered) and Howling Griffons (red/yellow quartered) are lovely schemes too. They're all quite old Chapters so Mk.IV would fit in there nicely.

Space Sharks/Carcharadons would also suit and the grey/white scheme looks really good when done well and if you go for a light grey tone there's plenty to learn about blending, shading and subtle highlights there. Then there's orange (Knights of Gryphonne) and Purple (Soul Drinkers pre-renegade, Hawk Lords) and metallic (Silver Skulls) all really different from your current army. The choices are endless really...

Hiya SCC, how are you goin' dude?, how do you go about starting a quartered scheme it has to be a neat line through them but I'm not sure how to get it nice and even? I like the storm lords, as I haven't painted white armor yet either just skulls and the like, but armor is a challenge and so would be the yellow helmet so they're looking like a good choice! I love the brazen claws and honestly did consider them a while ago when I was looking for my next marine chapter but decided on the Exemplars! so it looks like i've now got 1 suit left to do! this is where i'm at with them at the moment:

1: Imperial fist for Bullyboy76
2: storm lord for SCC
3: Crimson Fist for Darkstarsabre
4: Blood angel for nerdfest11
5: ?
6: wulfen terminator for jirc

nice little list to get me started with, and as soon as i get my marines i'll start planning the techniques! you don't mind if I pm you some questions do you? i'm trying to take everything on board that yourself and Pyriel have suggested to me i may need you to be my Yoda! don't know who Pyriel can be yet?....who's a egotistic grumpy mentor? can't fault him though!

I hope I can impress you with how I use your advice chris, I'm really looking to have some fun and learn heaps through this!

Split schemes are no different from any others, here's my standard screed of advice (many folks asked about my Brazen Claws):

It's pretty simple really, the key is patience and neatness. Obviously the 1st thing to do is pick where you're going to split the colours, obviously I pick down the middle vertically and the waist as the horizontal split. I have seen some nice stuff where the belt was the same colour as the legs, so maybe have think about that too.

As for the actual painting, well I paint as per usual, working on one colour at a time for highlights and shades and making sure it's nice and dry before I got to the other colour (basically so I don't smudge any wet paint). I paint a nice thin line of 50/50 black ink/Chaos Black down the vertical line after the first highlights are done just to help seperate and define the colours.

From there, paint as usual, but add a few extra highlights along the vertical line, again just to help define and seperate the 2 colours, you don't have to be as extreme as my guys (especially on the helmets) a more subtle approach looks awesome too, it just isn't my style ^_^

That's it really, be neat, especially where the 2 colours meet, a thin black line and a little bit of extra highlighting are all it takes.

Oh and remember to check you've got the paint on the backpack right, I got the colours switched around once and had to come up with a reason to paint an entire guy with reversed colours (the Brazen Claw sergeant, turned out OK) I blu-tac the backpack onto the mini and daub a touch of each colour on the correct side now, just to make sure I don't stuff up again.

Brazen Claw Combat Squad 1
BC CS 2

For Pyriel you could try the...Mentors (boom-tish)

And you're more than welcome to dash off a PM or three Damian, more than happy to help if I can

Hey Damo,

Glad to see you've got your mojo back. I was a bit worried about you reading the options post a, b, c,.. etc. Sounds like you're back to your usual energetic self though.

Can't wait to see your Imperial fist, i'm always drawn to how people do IFs as "they" say yellow is the hardest colour to paint well.

Good luck dude.

Hi everybody, as usual thanks for hanging out on here with me!

@Hangfire: Duuuude, good to see you (sort of) yep the mojo is well and truly back now! these marines may take me a while but it's going to be great for me and hopefully good for everyone to see as well! and don't worry i'll be honest about the difficulty and problems I face especially with the IF marine! now where are your Eldar? young man if you spent more time painting and less time at the Pepper pig world with your daughter we may have enough for a game in a year or three I played 3 games in the last two weeks with my Exemplars so now my tally is 6 games in 16 years woohoo! had a loss against Tyranids had a draw against Tau (great fun that one) and a big loss against Blood angels! so i'll give up for a while and focus on painting stuff!

@Lipsdapips: Hmmm alright just for you! I'll whip you up an Ultramarine in normal armour and tack him onto the list! any ideas how you want him?

@SCC: thanks so much dude, that was a big help and those Brazen Claws are beautifully done! so smooth and the poses are fantastic! it'll be great to look back at to help me when I get up to the storm lord for you! I had a chuckle about doing a 'mentor' for Pyriel that's gold right there! but he's actually got the Salamander on it's way to him in Goblinburg as we speak! and don't worry if you can help me paint white/yellow/red then by all means just pm me and i'll store it in my files!

catch you all soon

Done and done dudes! I'll do the crimson fist with both pads but I'll only lightly glue it on so you can remove it when it gets there! dark blue will be fun to do, it's got be dark enough to look that blue but light enough to show highlights and details! hmmm challenge ahoy!

and LDP, i'll paint you up a brother tac marine gladly with a helmet on! no problems at all

I'm having trouble trying to make the hand for jirc's wulfen lord and i can't find ghoul hands anywhere on the bits sites! any body out there got any vampire playing friends? as soon as I get them i can paint him up as the second on my list and get into the others quicker!

I'm so happy I started this train of thought and painting! it's really sparked me up heaps! and i've been madly researching different colours and methods for them, some i'm shaking my head at thinking how on earth can i replicate that! but hey! it's learning isn't it and we'll see how i go real soon!

happy painting everyone!

These marines you are painting for people... Are you doing a marine swap and sending them in the post or do you keep them and just take pictures?

Hey Hangy i'm not really doing a swap as I don't expect anything in return for the mini's i'm just using it as an opportunity to learn some more and send some good karma around but of course if anyone offers anything in return it would be churlish to refuse! it's a fun project that people can get involved with and follow with me! i'd be happy to do you up an Eldar if you like? I just need to get a model and i'll add him to the list let me know how you want him? color etc! it may be a little while until he gets done depending on the current ones i'm trying? but i've never painted eldar! so it'll be good to do!

so what else you been up to dude? anything fun

LOL, Yes, LDP i'm sending them to people! it's a small gesture to say thanks to those out there who have and continue to support me and be my friends whilst enjoying the painting i do, I think it would be nice to have a little strange marine all painted up on your shelves by me watching over your work or even perhaps used as an objective in a game!
it's a bit of a slow project as i really want to try and do good paintjobs on them and I've got to buy the mini's as well i'm going to have fun doing an ultra for you! the first one has been sent to Goblinburg to make sure Pyriel doesn't get up to too much trouble

on a strange side note, i just remembered when typing that I actually have one of the first marines I painted (a dark angel captain) hidden in my wall from when i removed a brick wall and had to patch up the others by plastering over them so in the gap where a brick was missing I popped him in and then finished the wall so he's there forever protecting the house! I have a pick on my phone but don't know how to get it on here......

I was going to try and get more work done today on jirc's wulfen lord but i really can't sculpt those damn hands i need so I'm just playing the waiting game until someone out there in dakka land can find me the ghoul arms i need! then i'll paint it up for him and send it (to New Zealand too!) so instead I tidied up my hobby room in prep for moving everything out for a whole houseful of new carpet! but i can still get to the stuff I need to work on thankfully

Nice idea there Damo.
Gives you something different to do, so keeps the interest up. Think I might copy that idea. I've got a mini i've been wanting to paint for ages, but i had no real reason to do it.

I've mostly been building my army as I'm trying to play regularly, so haven't got much painting done, but i've nearly got my DA exarch finished, so piccies coming soon on him. Just need to figure out what to do with the banner.

I love the idea that somewhere in your house is a dark angle captain plastered in the wall. One day 38,000 years from now, a space is marine's going to find it and say "WTF!"

If you find an Eldar mini and you fancy painting it up, that would be cool as. I'd be interested to see what you do with all the nobbly bits. grrrrrrrrrr

Hey there Damo, I'm gonna cjeck with my FLGSs this weekend and see if anyone has those hands, will let you know how I get on. BTW, I have a a few old plastic eldar models you can have if you are keen on painting one up? My buddy gave them to me like 8 or 9 years ago so they are old school. Man it sounds like you have the full reno going on, stressful to the max! Would love to see some photos, I can give you my "professional opinion"!

Hi hangy and james! cheers guys! well, jirc if you have a spare Eldar model i would love to paint it up for our good friend mr hangfire who appears to be posting right above you! never even put one together but as i keep saying, it's all good learnin'

and thanks james for having a look around your flgs, don't stress too much, i'll find them somewhere, i've asked DSS as well to keep an eye out so i'm pretty confident someone will have at least one in a bits box hiding somewhere! and then I can finish him! he's nearly ready to go apart from those damn hands but they're important to the whole look of the model imo, the paint will be the easy bit for me as i do love my wolves i plan on doing a more technically neat and blended version of the scheme of the ones in my gallery, i've got the paints all laid out and the model just sitting there glaring at me accusing me of being a slacker!

And james, you'd be right, the reno's are a pain in the it started last year with a bathroom, re done from scratch as it was just a double brick bathroom with a drop in fiberglass shower that had deteriorated badly, so cutting channels in brick to run pipes that had come through the ceiling next it was removing that double brick wall to make the lounge open plan! hard work but not as bad as i thought, now the kitchen! thought it'd be easier as we're just getting new doors and benchtop but discovered the top is joined to the frame and now we need to remove the entire kitchen and do it again from scratch! not fun!

well Hangfire, Mr Hangfire I shall do my best when i get a chance for some Eldar love! what scheme? I'll try and get the shots off my old phone to show you, I couldn't paint faces back then so i painted a skull face paint on him instead! looking forward to seeing your DA!
How have you gone in your games? mine haven't been successful for my Exemplars but my lord they've been fun games to play! I keep reading about how the other armies play and want to play against them but i really need to finish the squads and bits to make it competitive, I had nothing ranged or heavy enough to hurt the Blood angels but i basically strolled up the board against Tau to have a draw!

Well, my games have been like this. I mostly play against a mate who started playing at the same time as me. He's got a Chaos Marines slannesh army. He likes having all sonic weapons and a demon prince with lash of submission.

I couldn't touch him, for ages. He would win every game and usually in the first 2 turns.

A couple ofwraithlords and a squadron of warlakers to deal out the pain and the tables have turned. He really struggles to hurt me and I usually table him. So now we're waiting for finecast Obliterators for him and fire dragons for me, before we expand.

I've played a few games with some experienced tourney players, but I got tabled every time without fail.

Funnily enough my worst defeat was against Tau. They just hung back and took me apart with str 5 shooting, and some crazy ass single shot missles. I think i'll do more outflanking if I play Tau again.

My eldar are being painted in the Yme-Loc colours, so mostly fortress grey with orange bits. I'm tired of painting my DAs so next up is a Wraithlord.

sounds good! i'll love to see what you do with a wraithlord! they are nice looking models imo and your scheme is great! I didn't realise it was an official one though?

I'm enjoying learning to play now and don't mind losing as long as it's fun! that's why i always try and put Librarian Tomas into ridiculous situations and see how he fares :-) he's been eaten by space chickens and genestealers and had the beat down from a sang guard squad! one day he will win a battle! :-)
And yes i hate tau too, they tend to camp and pick you off with volleys of shots! then markerlight you and it just gets worse!

I'd like to play against chaos as well, something different but the guy who's got them doesn't like playing them as he wins with his tau :-) not fair!

Nerdfest09 glad you back on the painting horse . Well what you ate doing is what I would've recommended. You gotta break it up by painting something different to keep your juices flowing. Or you will get burnt out. Also sometimes just step away for a week or two and that will help also.
So keep up the good work and finish your chapter and paint different models in between.

Hello my fine gaming friends finally i've got off my Nerd butt and got an update for you all! not a huge one but I think it's good none the less!

I planned my day around painting these heads below, i wanted to start the marine head for Bullyboy76's imperial fist and the wulfen head for jirc's wulfen lord, i'm happy with how they are progressing so far, still more to go but i like to touch them up when they're on the mini and i can see how it all looks together.

the wulfen head was fun it's weird painting something so different to my usual work, and the sculpting made it easier to add the highlights, if i wanted to i could have overbrushed the whole thing and it would have looked passable, but, I wanted to try and do it properly like I said this whole project is about, I tried to add more pinkish tones into him to represent the fact they're in cold climes and would probably be a touch frost burned even for astartes, I also gave him yellow eyes to appear more wolf like, i think so far he looks good but it's not done yet have to do his hair/fur? and touch up the eyes and mouth, I popped it up next to the armor he's going in and now i don't like the termie armor it was started ages ago and I feel it's too busy and not smooth enough so i may pop him in pa instead and see what he looks like, but it's up to james what he wants him in, I think he will actually use him in game so he could be a cc lone wolf? or i could put him on a taller base and he could still be a wolf lord? dunno, ideas?

Next I worked on Bullyboy76's head for the Imperial fist marine i plan on painting him, he really likes my faces so he asked if he could be helmet less! which i find really strange as he is an awesome painter and produces some beautiful work including faces much smoother and better than I do! but, if that's what he wants from me then that's what i'll do this one isn't finished yet either, still hair to do and some touch ups on the face, I got one eye spot on but the other isn't playing nice with me! Grrrrrr! so i left it and i'll see if i can fix it hopefully later on

So, that's the days work so far! i then went and did a massive workout added 2.5 kilo's to my dumbells (and no they're now not a total of 2.5 kilo's!) and then went nuts on the bag! such a nice productive day, after i'd painted and worked out I even found myself glueing a marine together from my bits to paint up for myself and do a salamander in current armor, it's really tempting and pulling at me to play a sallie army as well now! we'll see how i go after painting this bad boy I may re visit those heads today but i'm drawn to the comfy couch and finishing the black library book 'salamander' by nick kyme, it's actually turning out to be one of the better books i've read from them recently, my first from the author but it's quite well written and is keeping me interested.

happy painting everyone hope you're all well and enjoying life

Really nice work and grats on the extra weight, personally i'm up to 13 push ups (yes that's all in one go!)
I really must go and hunt down bullyboy's blog.

With the wulfen's hair, did you drybrush? I found when doing the plume on my dire avengers it really hard to not end up with paint in between the fibres.

Hey nerdfest! good work on the heads though they came out a bit too white and pasty IMO. The marine's head looks a bit like he's wearing some makeup. One thing you can try doing is adding a bit more watered down flesh tones to give it a tint for a bit more realism.

Also, if you can glue marines after a good workout, it means you're not working out your arms hard enough. Usually if I try and paint after hitting the gym it ends up pretty bad with crooked lines and colours all over the place

Nah Eggroll he just took his helmet off and has that sweaty pale look . Nerdfest I agree with Eggroll just wash him down a bit and will bring some warmth back to him. Great job on both heads cant wait to see the rest of the model.

Why thank you everyone! good comments! yeah he does look a little like pin heads love child but It was actually the sun coming through the window where i was painting that makes him look washed out a bit too much but I will give him another touch up and a wash in the recesses and paint his hair soon I hope,

The wulfen head is coming along nice, just need to re do his eyes and make them more wolf like! and the hair is dry brushed but I'm going to wash it and blend some more color into it to hopefully make it look better, he was going into a suit of terminator armor as a wolf lord for jirc but if i search my bits box I may be able to do him a small squad of wolf guard with those heads! we'll just have to see!

nothing else exciting for you all sorry

no more weights either and eggroll was nearly right, at first I couldn't bend my arm properly so i had a spa to warm myself up! then i painted!

see you monday night dudes!

Nope GP not the same bug, :-) I still think it may be in the same virus category but I paint my faces sometimes before the armor so i make sure i'm only focussing on the head in particular then it spurs me on to make sure the armor is up to scratch! and in this case neither of these heads have bodies to be attatched to yet :-( and I've got nothing else i'm keen to work on at the moment so heads it is for the win! :-)

Hey dude, yep, selling the Exemplars :-( i'm sure they'll end up with someone to love them and continue their purge of traitors from the eye of terror! hopefully anyway! :-)

Next project is kinda twofold, i'll need marines because i just can't live without 'em so after some deliberation and being impressed by a lot of reading about them during my research i've decided to start a Salamander army! should be awesome, i'm really looking forward to it, i've had a lot of help from Pyriel with what to run as I hope to play this army more competitively than i have before, now i'm looking for parts i need to add to the models I've got to use for it!
then next up i'm doing a necron army, i've been waiting for aaaaages to do this one again! had bought everything a few years ago but had to sell it off before i could even assemble it :-( so i'm itching for the new stuff to be released and i'm on it like white on rice on a polar bear in a snow storm!

After minimal sleep today I will try again to pop some pics up for you all! I obtained an Ork warboss from aobr for freeeeeeee! and considering I haven't even touched an Ork before I thought it'd be a good time to start thinking of how i'd want one to look if i were to paint one up! I intend to paint him in lighter skin tones and heavily weather the metal and clothes, I have another head on the way from an Ork biker and i've been informed by Dakka's foremost expert on Orks (professor Kingcracker) that the biker head will look rather small on him, but i'll wait until it arrives and see if I can't do anything to make it look cool! I also didn't like the static pose of the stuck on gun arm so I tried my hand at converting it slightly! I wanted top give him the 'come at me bro' look we all love and i would expect to see from an Ork warboss bellowing a challenge to the puny 'umans! I sanded the arm to get a bit of an angle and then pinned it in place and glued it, then I used my brownstuff for the first time (yay!) and sculpted (well tried to) the shoulder and muscle to fit with the pose! he's since been undercoated and as soon as the head arrives i'll get paintin' I know it's only a minor change but I think it gives him much more presence and makes him look even bigger and meaner than he already is!

More tomorrow on some more wulfen heads for jirc! and maybe if i get lucky some more salamander love! oh yeah!

Any thoughts on a colour scheme? You sticking with a GW one on going off the beaten track?

Back in the day (love that expression) I liked it when you saw orks with cheesy prisoner clothes, like white trousers with arrows on them. You don't see that around much now-a-days.

I think it's good you're doing something other than boring old marines!

There's a bit of sorrow with you selling them there mate, however you'd gotten into a funk and sometimes the best way to deal with a funk is to be done with them. Shall be very curious as to what's next....

And yes, random things to paint do help. I've actually stockpiled odds and ends for just that purpose and practice so I have a random lot of LotR minis, some Empire and other things as spare projects.

Well, don't shed tears yet DSS, they are up for sale if anyone wants them but i;m hoping that I can work out finances to enable me to start the new army without them jumping on their battle barge and off into the solar sunset!

This Ork is going to be fun, it'a a huuuge model! towers over the marines so big bits to paint!

for his paint scheme i'm as yet undecided but open to ideas! the convict theme from hangfire would work and keep in theme with me being from Tasmania! a colony settled by arrow wearing convicts from England! 'cos that's how we roll!

must have been a full moon last night because I dreamed pf painting werewolves! whilst watching werewolf fims and turning into a werewolf! crazy stuff! so once I awoke into the darkened morning my mind was already made up! start painting all the wulfen heads for jirc! so that's what i did, I started them, so far they each only have been based with tallarn flesh and washed with ogryn flesh and at this stage they have only had the first highlight added of a mix of fortress grey, Tallarn flesh and bleached bone, but i thought i'd throw up some progress shots for you guys, next i'll do the shadows on their faces and add the ruddy cheeks and nose (it's bloody cold on Fenris) I like the heads some are a better sculpt than others though, a couple are a touch rough in spots and it's hard to discern details but overall they look tough in power armor!

here's the pack:

Keep in mind they look rough but it's just the skin i'm starting on so when I post them up soon with more paint you can see the hopefully good progression to what they'll be when done!

cheers everyone, chat soon!

Thanks Gits, now for another update! I kept painting and managed to get a bit further on all of them, not quite finished yet but i've had enough for today's painting, i managed to nearly finish another salamander as well and I suppose these guys/beasts will need some hair work and touch ups around the eyes but thought i'd show you the progression of them again, hope you all like! especially jirc 'cos they're going on his wolf guard!

As you can see i've started to add the reddish tinge to the cheeks and started on the teeth, like i said before they're pretty good quality but it seems like they've been made by two different people! there's a couple i really like and a couple i think look a bit rough and cartoonish? weird.

Oh and here's where i'm at with the first Salamander for my new army! i've mostly done his armor and have to do his pauldrons and backpack and chest eagle, then he'll be sweet to continue the fight through the stars!

Once again your painting skills make me feel really jealous. How you manage such a smooth transition and have a huge change in colour from the shade to highlight, well I just don't get it.

Maybe it's further back in your blog but why the sudden change from exemplars to Salamanders?

Hiya hangfire, Ummm, I don't really know why i'm starting a new army! I do like the Exemplars but I think I have to go back and touch up bits that i'm not happy with and some of the photo's makes the reds look really boring and flat which they're not in 'real life' I suppose they just ran the course for me, I doubt anyone will buy them though so they may see the paint table again! there isn't much market in my island state for a marine army and postage anywhere else will be a deterrent for people, I also like the stories behind the sallies, the skin and green armor are a nice change I think, and I can also build them to a rather nice list for playing with! i've only ever collected stuff on the rule of cool 'o' meter and this will be nice having an army I can paint nicely and also hopefully win a game or two with, thanks to my coach Pyriel for the list! :-)

So, you know what will happen? i'll have the Exemplars sitting there waiting to be sold, no one will buy them, i'll get sick of painting green and then before you know it, my blog will be updated with all things red and black again lol :-)

Oh and my blending is not even as good as yours dude! seriously it's just my choice of colors i think make it easier to blend than others! reds and greens seem quite forgiving!

Thanks Gits, they're coming along nicely, should hopefully have them finished next week, the Salamander is done though! he looks pretty cool and as usual wasn't a long drawn out paint either, and I took the time and remembered to paint the armor joins! :-) i'd be happy with a strike force painted to his standard, only thing i'm going to try is this, I painted the base coat on him with an old bottle of Orkhide shade, but to speed up the process i'm considering buying a can of army painter dark green to do my base coats! if it works then i should be able to churn out at least a five man squad at one sitting! which will be a relief plus I get the army on the table to suprise my best mate who has no idea i've started another force!

Oh and anyone got techniques for painting teeth/fang?

I'll try and pop up an update next week, right now i;m taking the kids (Dogs) into my parents place to annoy them and run rampant around the house and keep their Kelpie x in line!

keep painting dudes and dudettes!

Been painting a little bit here and there. Just uploaded some new stuff last night for my work in progress thread. I'm in the middle of going through a ton of crap in my "gaming/spare room" from when we moved a few months ago, its just the heats been unbearable without an air conditioner and I can only paint at night and in the living room of all places. Ive found so many projects that I never finished so I've got plenty to keep me busy through the coming winter (Tau, Knights of Blood, Vostroyans, Daemons, an army of over 500 Night Goblins etc.)

Preposterous indeed Pyriel! your veneer of normality is slipping! Mwahahaha!

I have a small update of something for you though!

I managed to undercoat some of my Salamanders models, namely the bodies of the 5 man dev squad as i'm waiting for the weapons from the interwebs to get to me! gonna be sweet when they get here! they just have a base colour of Orkhide shade but for the rest of my models I'll hopefully be using army painter angel green primer to lay down the base coat on them all.

I also had a fiddle with my dreadnought, it was going to be used for my marines exemplar army but I got the itch to do something and decided to try using brownstuff for the first time, I figured sculpting blobs of rock or scale should be a nice easy way to introduce myself to it's tacky qualities!

I think the left panel need something as well but I'll figure out what soon, maybe a dragon head? that'll test me!

and I got the family together for a group photo!

shows them a little better, but they're still not done as i had the shakes today! too much coffee and helping a mate out after he broke off his engagement! big day for the Nerd!

well it goes without saying it's good to be back even if it's only a minimal post but don't give up on me and I look forward to seeing you all and following what you've been up to as well soon! hope everyone 's doing great!

Did Pyriel ever share his magic formula for scales with you,or is he keeping it a closely guarded secret?

Next time you do scales can you try to do little scales moving into big ones, like on a lizard, they have lots of little scales around areas that move a lot, like the neck, but then on the main body they have bigger ones. Might need to be on something bigger like a vehicle, but I think it would look awesome and better than a random sizes all over or similar sized scales all over.

Be well damo

P.S. I managed to get some unthinned ultramarine blue on the bottom of my hand the other day and smeared it across the face of my Wraithlord, doh!

Nope Pyriel is keeping it secret at the moment but i'll harass him and see if he can help me out I was sorta going for a rocky look to the dready and i'll paint the areas in between as a lava flow, but I was thinking much as you described by adding some scales onto my vehicles thanks for letting me know how the scales should look/work I didn't even think about how they actually move on a lizard!

and i'm always well!

Gah! That sucks man, hope you can correct it.
worst thing that ahppen to me was after having painted a whole salamanders terminator arm being finished and all I promptly dropped it...right into a opened pot of paint lol.

Nerd needs to pester me in PM and I can give him a quick tutorial when time allows it.
These are the scales I usually do:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/66212-Salamanders%20firedrake.html

Nerd, If they are not your cup of tee then use whatever method you feel look nice on your minis but I tried the very same thing described in that tutorial further back in the thread when I initially toyed with scale sculpting, just my opinion but it sucks and takes ages to do.

Ta Daaaaaa! yep, got an update on the Salamanders! had a but of quiet time at work last night at 3am so I though eh! why not, lets test the 'ol eyes out and see if I can blend some green armor! hopefully tonight I can do the eyes and gold highlights
these guys are going to be a plasma cannon weilding squad of Doooooom! hence no arms in actual light they are quite bright, more so than they appear in the pics, if i highlighted them more I could have passed them of as sons of medusa or Aurora chapter, but i think the colour is still predominantly Salamander! i'm hoping to find half hour on my rdo's this week to do 'headless Barry's' head! I think he's end up being the sarge of the squad, don't know what to give him though? he's not exactly getting into the thick of battle! any ideas?

well, enough rambling, like mario says in mario kart..... Ere we goooooo!

Hope you approve? let me know what you think, I think this army will look pretty sweet when I get into stride with the painting! i'm still itching to do some landspeeders for them! maybe soon? we'll see.

Hey Pyriel, thanks for the compliment dude! I hope I can paint them well enough to make you proud! or at least work out a technique that piques your interest!

and I only use 3 colours for the armor, Orkhide shade for the base, then snot green, then mixes adding more and more golden yellow to it, I liked the image on the front of firedrake with the yellow tinge so that was my inspiration there, the golden yellow keeps it nice and warm, but the pics do make it appear a touch too bright than what it actually is, it's more like the one i sent you :-)

Try to use scorpion green instead of golden yellow and see what the result will be, that´s what I do and it works for me.
We have different base greens but I dont think you´ll loose anything by trying.

Couldn't see the pics at work so I just kicked the wife off the computer so I could have a look.

Nice highlighting as usual Damo.

Are you ink washing after the basecoat? If so what colour?

I can't help but think that you could handle a slightly darker shade. So there's a bit more contrast in tone, saying that if you're happy with it then stick with it.

Thanks dudes! :-) I am proud to be a super greenie! and i'll do my best to...well,....do my best!
I actually like the golden yellow mix so i'll run with it for now, it's just a bit different to what i usualy see for green armor, and we all know I like to be just a little left of centre :-)

No washes hangy, just brush work so far, I'll see if i can link some models i was inspired by the style of and you'll see what i'm trying to emmulate with these guys, i think when the details are finished and the weapons together it'll all blend well, and i f i don't like it then for the rest of the squads i'll try Pyriels method and add scorpion green and see what happens! :-)

Thanks again everyone for your comments! i'm really happy you like the recent stuff I'll wait and see how it all looks when the squads finished before I look at changing the method for the green, I was trying to go all Bobby Wong on yo ass!

@Redscorps: I'm glad you like my Exemplars and Wolf guard, two totally different styles i tried, those wolf guard faces are my best ones to date too, I was really happy with how they all looked together, the Sallies didn't take as long as I thought they would either! I managed to highlight 4 of them from the dark green on the previous page to what you see above in about 2 hours

@Axlbush: yeah, I like the menacing chaplain too! thank you for your comments and you are correct, yes he does have a big line up his arm, but never fear! I was informed as soon as I put the pic up and then also informed that the crozius arm looks crap! (thanks Pyriel! ) so I'm working on something different for him in the future, lets hope when he's done he looks even better!

@lipsapips & Knightly & jirc: You damn New Zullanders! from the looks of it the country breeds some awesome painters, and it turns out you all are pretty nice guys to boot! and what do you mean you don't have any cracks? what about the earthquakes? or was that a scam so we don't come over and steal all your women? 'cos you know I so would! (as long as Kristy doesn't find out!)

@kingcracker: Ah thank you my fine hirsute friend! glad you like the blend! it's good practice for mega Orky warbossy kikassy! but he'll hopefully be more khaki skinned than bright green

Yay, more work done! managed to find some time on my break in shift at work this past week! and thanks to bright lights I got a good result, only problem i found was a couple of small gaps in the front of the Landspeeders but i'm not gonna worry too much, when they've been finished you won't even notice
these two Landspeeders were originally the ones I had for my Marines Exemplar! but i got bitten really hard by the green bug! the infection spread quickly and there is no known cure! now as I've had no interest in my Marines army that i'm trying to sell the malady is urging me to paint them allllll Greeeeeen! .......... hopefully I won't go down that track, but it's a tasty option for me!

Well, now onto the models, I used the same colours as my marines i did earlier, but was unsure how to paint the larger areas of the vehicles so they looked the same, I ended up drybrushing which i'm not usually a massive fan of using but the results are better than I expected, I first drybrushed the highlights going lighter twice to see where it looked 'right' then blended the next highlight focusing more on the hard edges and finally the brightest highlight on just the very edges, now I need to work on the details and marines and weapons, chances are it'll be week after next when i get a chance to paint more for those that have been following my blog you'd know I'm kinda smack bang in the middle of renovations to my home, I managed to pull out and replace my kitchen last week and yesterday nerdfest11 and i pulled up all my carpet and underlay and move all the furniture in prep for a whole house full of lovely new carpet! which should be next friday! woo hoo! fun times... sorry....enough about that, you probably want models?

There we go, hope you like my new project? I tried to get an accurate pic but they are a little darker than in actuality, I took some mobile pics when i painted them and they looked damn near fluro bright!
I hope everyone is happy and well and having the time of their life painting? if you're not, why not? get painting, get happy!

Nice job with the landspeeder. Green came out very nice. Don't worry about the gap, the landspeeder is a pain to assemble. My first speeder's body fit so poorly I had to put a 35lbs. dumb bell on it to make it stay in place while the glue cured.

Thanks Eggy, means a lot you like the green machines! :-) It's such a shame these models are hard to put together right, I love the model and in my lifetime I've only had one go together correctly, I tried copious rubber bands and weight but it just pulled other parts out of whack :-( one of these ones is o.k and as far as i notice apart from the glaring one the gaps aren't too bad over the rest of the body, I wish in hindsight I'd greenstuffed the gaps but I never payed attention :-)

never mind i'll have to try and paint them so well no one notices any problems!

See the ones I turned into buggies, have a few gaps in them as well, and I figured it was the previous owner that did that. Nice to know its just my speeder/buggies that have holes in em. At least on Ork buggies the gaps look right at home

Post by: nerdfest09

Yes Dad!, I mean Jack!, sorry!

alright then update time! finally! i've been looking forward to this for the last couple of months! I managed to start a lot of stuff and get myself organised for the next phase of paint love!
did some work firstly on the Salamanders dev squad, I did the sergeant's head and started on the plasma cannons and backpacks, using my patented 'Nerdstick' I lightly glued the weapons and components onto it for undercoating black, after it dried I gave it a shot of skull white from the top like I do with Marines Exemplars, then washed the pads with badab black ink couple of time, that's all i'm at with them but the sergeants head is done, same deal as before, undercoat black use skull white to give you your shading then wash with badab black until you're happy with the colour! paint the eyes red, teeth bone and voila, not a bad looking sallie head done in record time!

Pics or it didn't happen!.....Nerdstick ready to rock!

Dev squad sarge head, looks good in any light, backpack still w.i.p

Next up was Warboss! he'd been lookin' at me for ages and I had to at least start something on him! I modified his gun arm when i got him a while back to make him look more intimidating by swinging his arms out to the side as if he's bellowing a challenge to the *ahem* puny 'Umans! my original idea was to get an Ork biker head with goggles to use as we all know I love painting my lenses, and I thought the bright glowing lenses would make a good spot colour for the rest of the model and look cool to boot! sadly I was informed by the Dakkasphere's premier Ork biologist 'KingCracker' that he would suffer a fate know as 'tinyheadoutofproportionitis!' and it really is as bad as it sounds! so what do I do? I don't have a head that's big enough and I want to have goggles on him? Kingcracker again to the rescue! he'll start wearing his undies on the outside if he keeps this up! he informed me to get the inside of an old pen and trim it down to make the goggles bases, then buy small hobby tacks used for boats with the rounded ends and trim them down to fit inside the circles, this then makes pretty nifty goggles! I didn't do a 'bad' job but I could have been more precise and filled the inside if the goggle with greenstuff to make it look better, but hey here's what i did so far

WAAAAAAAAGH!

Finally today I started an Imperial Fist marine as a gift for Bullyboy76, his stuff is inspiring and I love seeing his new stuff when he posts it up! everything is excellent and so well executed! his imperial fists termies were the models that introduced me to his work so to say thanks for his positive feedback on my own work I'm painting one up to give him! not having painted yellow before I did some research and found there are many difering methods that can glean you some good results, i wanted to properly paint mine so i got my paints and water and had a crack! I bought some P3 yellow ink to use as a glaze and decided to coat the model with it to start with and give me an idea of how hard it was going to be? turns out that the ink is beautiful! went on smooth and covered wonderfully, if I had of had another plan I would have used this to give me my panel colour! but as it's not how I had envisioned painting him I followed my original idea and proceeded to line the darker areas and shadows with devlan mud, I was trying to be careful but it's hard and I do have areas to touch up! then I mixed vomit brown and golden yellow and gave it a couple of thin thin coats to try and blend it slowly into the bright ink yellow, that's all I did on him today but he's coming along nicely. next up i'll blend some brighter highlights on him and re darken any bits that need shadows!

Ink wash and light devlan mud in lines...

Started layering on the golden yellow and vomit brown mix very lightly....

and this is where i'm at so far with him! looks alright, he;s a fair dark yellow but it'll serve well when i add brigter highlights to the edges!

Now, time for some porky pig!..... eh yeah, eh yeah, That's all folks!

looking forward to seeing what you all think and comment on, i'll do my best to stop being a 'bum' and be more regular now the Nerd cave is back in business!
hope to hear from you all soon!

Yep, it's awesome to be able to paint again! I feel so much more relaxed now, it's kind of like withdrawals when I can't paint, that's why i did heaps of smaller stuff today to sate my thirst! :-) now I'm waiting for you two guys to post more stuff!...I went first!

and the Ork skin is simply a thin watered down covering of GW Camo green, but it's the sort of look i'm heading for, something a bit more 'real' and can allow me to add some darker shades and pink tones around bionics and so forth!

Now i'm looking forward to my next paint session! I should hopefully get just as much done for you all!

Ahh yes, superglue. The funnest more annoying tool in our arsenal. I remember when I was building my now, Mekaniak, that while gluing one of the arms to its body, I hadnt realized that I applied to much super glue, and it ran from the arm, down my finger, which obviously coated another finger, and then seeped down onto the plastic board I work on. So I was listening to music and just resting my hands on the table letting it dry, and spaced listening to some song. After a couple minutes it ended and when I went to let go of the mini to check how its drying, I glued the Ork to my finger, which was glued to another funger, which was glued to the plastic board

That was an interesting turn of events

Allo allo allo everyone! I've finally found time in the madness of my life to do some painting! but first, I needed sustenance to succeed in my endeavors, and what better way to sustain myself and also give my beautiful gf kristy props? well, it was my birthday yesterday and she made me a delicious baked cheesecake! baileys irish cream and white chocolate with a choc ripple base! omg! soooo nice I'd love to share it with you all my friends but I can't so i'll suffice with teasing you with a pic of it instead!

Now that i'm full of energy (and fattening cheesecake) I thought i'd paint some of the fist and the Warboss! let's start with the Imperial fist marine, I started detailing some...well,...details, and painted the shoulder rims and tubes on the armour, as well as layering some more coats of sunburst yellow over the panels, it's slowly starting to cover the colour used to line the armour and smooth out the colour, it's very hard to not get lazy and whack on heaps of paint but to get it looking good this is taking time! he's a slow job but i can see him taking shape slowly, I also dummied up his head and bolter to see how he looks and I must say i like it! another thing I noticed when painting is the quality of the casting, or lack of, which leads me to believe that these marines are copies of the forgeworld ones, never mind i've got them now and they didn't cost too much! on with the photo's of the emperor's finest!

Righto fellow Nerds, here's my Warboss progress, I'm really getting into him at the moment, I plan on entering him in the Coolminiornot painting comp later this month so I am trying hard to make him decent, and it's good for me as it means I am forced to finish him today i nearly finished his shoota and managed to get most of the base coats on each part of him to see where to head, I needed to add some kind of bright colour so yellow it is, but when I finish the metal areas there won't be too much yellow left to show or distract from the rest of him, I am hoping to really make his face the focus with those lenses, to weather him i'm using the same method i used on my landraider a few pages ago.

Here's the shoota, i wanted him to have weathered beaten weapons with a very matt finish to them, rusty but functional!

And here he is in all his angry and war bitten glory! ready to tear asunder any lesser being! and of course waiting for me to finish painting him!

That's all for now i'm afraid! but the bug has bitten me hard and I'm feeling the rush of learning and painting coming back to me! so bring on days off work for more Orky action!

talk to you all soon!

Looking good nerdfest. Really liking the warboss - especially the goggle lenses.

I'm not a huge fan of the latest SM face though. The lips are a bit too 'pink lipstick' and feminine looking. Maybe try making them darker purple. Also, are you planning on picking out the service studs?

Hi and thanks guys! glad you all approve for the most part! :-) I don't have any purple to use eggy so I'm doing the best with what I got! and yep, since I took the pics i've done more to his face and picked out the service studs as well!
the Warboss is Fun Fun Fun! don't think I could do an entire force but this guy is really entertaining to paint! if i did do an army I'd have them all with goggles! lol :-)

Huzzah! Finally got to check this after a week or two of realising I can't look at this thread at work cause the photos don't show.

I must say mate that you certainly needed that break from painting red and black and you'd doing a spot on job with it. The Ork is a splendid example of weathering (because, oddly enough I think I've discovered I like it with all that I'd been doing of late) and the Fist is a very nice clean yellow indeed. Keep it up!

Nerd, those minis look great. The face on that Imp Fist is quite impressive. I'm really liking the direction you've gone with the warboss. The rusty weathering on his shoota looks awesome. Hope you had a good bday. That cake looks mighty tasty.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Whoa, what a day i've had! and it's been awesome! got myself some new glasses with cash from my birthday last week and I love 'em, nice and stylish, and boy can I see better to paint (which makes them hobby related!) seriously it's been years since i had a eye test and now it's as clear as anything! so to kick off todays post, here's a pic of my new frames and lenses (at least i didn't have to paint these ones!) I can't believe how much better I can see details when painting now!

Well, now you've admired me and my new glasses lets get on with what you really want to see!.... my ass!....no? o.k I'll post pics of my models then!

I finished my Warboss! yep, finished, i can't believe it either! i'll run you through the update progress pics though before the final reveal, started off again by focusing on the details on his body like bandages and straps, teeth etc, I quite like the bandage around his arm with blood on it, fun to try and get right too, googling images of bloody bandages is not that much fun but I got an eye opening lesson on the depth of the reds and browns involved I think i did o.k with what i had to use today as I discovered some of my paints had solidified and I need to re stock! well here's the arm for your pleasure:

But what about his other arm I hear you cry! never fear, I got to work on that too, weathering it within an inch of it's life! I looked at industrial machinery that was also yellow and had massive claws like our log strippers and movers from forestry, they're left outside in the bush for months while they harvest the old and new growth forests in my home state, used most days and kept sharp and oiled, very much like I imagine an Ork Klaw to be? heavily used but working well and bloody sharp! lets see how you think i went?

I like it! but wanted some colour on him now, and I know a lot of people are going to say the next bit is too clean for an Ork but I'll just say he's only acquired this cloth recently from some imperial palace, maybe it's a luxurious curtain? up to your imagination!

Oh just to annoy you further, I almost forgot to tell you how my morning started at the very start! yep, with a knock on the door! a knock on the door i hear you say, that's not exciting, usually means a gang of bikers with bars or someone to read a meter to bill me more! but no! better than that, it was a courier, yep, a courier with a package for me! and in that package was.... heaps of cool stuff! namely a can of army painter primer, a rhino, attack bike and Terminators all for my salamanders army and a swag of MERCS mini's a mercenary squad of sefadu for my gaming pleasure! and i must also say the models are really nicely done and great quality, even if you never intend on playing the game, I encourage you to pick some up to paint! I can't wait to start them next week! with my new paint brushes! I needed them so badly! all army painter ones so we'll see how good they are very soon!...

Now back to the Boss, he's all done now and looking nasty as hell, so here's a few pics of him all done, i'll enter him in the coolminiornot painting comp and i'll chuck a link up if you want top check out mine and others entries to vote, some on there already are staggeringly good!

And here's the coup de grace, I like this shot heaps but I'll take it and get some professional shots done soon so i can then send him off to a lucky someone so he can lead a Waaaaaaaah, hope you all like what i did so far and as usual any nice polite comments are welcome

Until next time, happy painting and keep well!

any feedback on this matter from anyone would be appreciated :-)

cheers dudes.

G'day everyone! I had a chance to do some painting this morning and assemble my MERCS mini's too to start with I removed any flash or mold lines from them and happily as they are such good quality there was very little and only took me about 3 minutes I undercoated them white and washed them with devlan mud to bring out the details on them, they are great poses on the Sefadu models, very dynamic and full of action, even the sniper is bringing the pain with his rifle holstered! I haven't done much since the photo but i'm just laying down the base colours for them but thought i'd show you them first before I do more and update them!

SEFADU:

I managed to also finish the Wulfen heads for jirc! I only had to finish the teeth on them and touch up the hair a bit, i'd say they're good table top standard now and I hope they find their way onto some of his sweet looking space wolves! I packed them up nicely ready for a trip over the water! and here they are!

And just a quick update as I know you aren't interested in boring just assembled models but I managed to assemble and undercoat something beautiful! I never realised how sexy a squad of ten terminators with thunder hammers are these guys look hard as together! I used a can of Army painters Angel green primer and it's a great colour for the base coat and the can was so smooth to use, great coverage and it kind of sticks to even the hard to reach bits on the models, again, i'd recommend them to anyone! just follow the instructions carefully

Last thing I played with this morning was the arms for my Salamanders dreadnought, some may remember a few pages back i tried my hand at using greenstuff for the first time to make some 'rocks' on the arms, well, since then they've just sat there not doing much just accusing me of not paying them any attention, I figured I should attempt to do some more and see if I can get my salamanders mojo back on track, and what do you know? it did I think they look pretty good so far with the lava flowing over them like that next week I'll try and finish both arms so i can work on the dev squad again (I know, I know, still not finished!) what do you guys think?

Well, that's about it again from the Nerd lair next time I'll have the Sefadu models all base coated for opinions on how to work with them! and I should have the dreadnought arms done and maybe some more work on the Imperial Fist model

Hope everyone's well and painting!

Thanks prime, the body will be the same green that i'm working on with my speeders so yeah, it should pop quite well on the body, especially when i finish them off, I hope the pics weren't massive? they should be small but I see them huge and it really detracts from the painting :-(

Thanks Gits! :-) good to hear from you! i've been still loyally following your thread too! (just haven't needed to comment as everyone says it before me!) glad you like the dread arms, do you think they should be done in gunmetal colours or golds? i'm not sure yet? the gold would look good with the greens but it's easier to do the silver metals! hmmmm decisions :-)

Tarnished gold colors? Maybe like a bronze or brass? That would not only look really cool, but also set your Salamanders apart from the rest. Sure silvers would be easier to paint, but when pulled off golds are so much more rewarding

I say you do the end of the lascannon (the angled bit - hard to explain ) in gold and all the misc metal pieces silver, and heavily wash/weather
thats just my opinion though.

Thanks again everyone for your comments! and suggestions! glad you enjoy hanging out here with me and my ramblings :-)

I think I may try and paint the weapons on the dreadnought in a brass/bronze look, just for something different and also as the Salamanders are master artisans and weapon smiths I feel it would be fitting to have an ancient war machine with a bit of bling to him :-) it should also look good against the lava effect on the shoulders, again, any criticism and suggestions are more than welcome!

I will aim to also finish base coating my sefadu mini's and attempt to do some more on the imperial fist and the sallies :-) so this week looks busy for the Nerd!

catch you all soon.

Ooooo I really like the lava on that Dread arm! And yes TH/SS Termies do look sexy don't they? Nothing inspires more hate/fear in your opponent either haha

I had a nice relaxing day and got what felt like heaps done today! I won't bother you with lots of chatter today, I'll leave that for tomorrow here's where i'm at, I did some work on my speeders, I thought they needed some kind of colour to break them up but i didn't want to do black, so, inspired by the arms on the dreadnought I had an aha moment and went to work....

thoughts?

Also painted the barrels on my dread gold, tried to add some details onto them in mithril silver before I washed them with gryphone sepia, I thought they looked too gold so I re painted them back to silver but left the two 'brackets' on each end in gold and it looks much better yet still ornate enough to represent the sallies i'll pic up tomorrow..

Hope the pics aren't massive, but it's all meshing well imo, can't wait to do some more tomorrow!

Have you actually modelled the lava onto the speeders or have you gone nuts and painted it on?! Looks awesome either way, it really pops

Thanks kitch, I modelled the rocky bits onto the speeders and then painted the lava flow around them, i need to finish painting the rocks and touch up a bit and then that bit should be right and i can move onto the rest of the speeder :-)

The lava on the speeders looks fantastic Nerdy... never seen anything like that before. Very well done.

My issue with the gold on the guns is that it's laid up right next to the bolt gun metal... you need some other color in there that is not metallic to give a visual break between the two. I know you aren't done yet... but I thought I'd mention it before you proceeded.

Great work!

G'day again my fellow Nerds! I know this is unheard of! two updates in two days! don't sweat yet it's not a massive one just a few pics of the speeders weapons and one of the dreadnought to see what you think, most of the weapons are nearly done now, just need to do some touch ups and neaten areas up but at least they're 90% done now!

and just a little pic of the dready, not anywhere near finished yet but I think the gold brackets work o.k on him, once it gets more detailed I think it'll be great.

I would have liked to sign off with a great finished model or two but I don't have any ..... so you'll have to wait! hopefully I'll have the pilots and gunners finished next time and then the speeders will be completed, the first unit done on my sallie army! can't wait!

Wow, thanks everyone, very positive stuff there!

@Pyriel & Mr Malevolent: thank you guys I appreciate it heaps, I certainly will be keeping it up as I'm really getting into the swing of them now and I can see some decent progress!

@bebopdrums2424 & GreyDeathOne: More eh! well updates will be a tad slower but I hope results will be much better

@The Epic Chaosdude!: thanks dude, glad you like 'em!

@whalemusic360: Good to hear from you again dude, i'm happy you like these guys! the exemplars really were an experiment to see how quickly I can paint an army up as I'm one of those painters that get annoyed if I don't see any fast progress! but I'm planning on taking my time with these sallies and although updates will be slower I hope the quality of them will keep people interested, i'm really wanting to produce an army that is as nice to look at as Pyriels! (although not as well painted )

@Gitsplitta: you really like 'em? now, to have you want me to paint anything for you is a massive compliment in itself! thanks Gits!

I think next update will be the dev squad plasma cannons i'm hoping to try and get the 'plasma coil' bit to appear as if it's charging up along a couple of them towards the end of the gun ready to fire! ..... but we'll see!

catch you all soon!

Damn you've been busy/ That dread and those Land Speeders are AWESOME! I love how incorparated the lava theme on the hull of the Land Speeder. If the whole army follows that same concept its gonna be epic on the table. Again great work.

Wow dude that's some great progress! If you want the gold to look darker to match the scheme a little better, you could always give it a couple devlan mud washes, works well for my shoulder pads/cheagles most of the time

Heh, cheagles

Yes Nerdfest, I really like them. The greens are clean and crisp, the lava is well executed and the little bits of glowing orange on the guns are very well done. I doubt I'll do as good a job on my speeders as you've done on yours.

Happy friday my fellow Nerd friends! Not a huge lot painted today but have some w.i.p shots for you of my dev squad, still obviously a fair bit of small detail type work on them all but they are finally coming together as a whole, mostly I highlighted the armour and base coated and washed the rest of the guns and started on the plasma coils, I really want to get the plasma blast from armourcast to add to one of them but we'll see how i go in the next couple of weeks? need to buy some more stock so it may just make his way into my army

I can't wait to finally finish this squad, it'll be the first fully finished squad for my sallies and it's packing a lot of ouch! except for one thing ...... when I ordered all the bits I got sent one wrong 'support arm' and one wrong backpack! so if anyone has a spare plasma cannon backpack and arm lying around?.....

anyway, here the boys are:

Next week I really hope to finish the squad and other cannon I have and then do some more on the speeders!

Hope everyone's happy, well and painting heaps! catch you all soon.

I like your Salamanders the lava technique is really cool. Those Plasma cannon gunners are very well painted not sure I'm a fan of the square bases though.
And I'm sure I have a plasma cannon backpack and a Plasma Cannon arm lying around somewhere, we can do a bits trade if you want.
Edit; I've just checked now and I have two plasma cannon sets with arms backpacks and everything!

Oh sweet FP! that'd be great dude, what are you needing for your projects? i'll find something you need i'm sure! :-) PM me your address and what you need and i'll get onto it quick smart!

and thanks for the compliments! I am looking forward to finishing these guys and you'll be glad to know that the square bases are just temporary until i buy my bases from back2base-ix I accidentally threw all my spare round ones out and had these lying around :-)

PM sent. I thought the bases might be temporary, I was just checking. Square bases look horrible with all 40k minis for some reason. The Back2Base-ix bases are awesome they will look great with your minis.

Thanks Pooo, i'm planning on getting the sort of checker plate floor ones and imagining them to be on a boarding mission? and if they are in a massive space hulk then that can explain the speeder :-)

Yeah I did see them, and they are awesome but i can't think of a scenario to use them as they are? unless GW puts out a mission book like cities of death where you fight space hulk style battles throughout different ships? Now how cool would that be! :-) imagine the myriad of races they'd have to make full sized space ship corridors for! Tau, Nids, Ork, Oh my head is swimming just thinking of the fun times it would create!
