I'll say it again, since it was apparently overlooked the first time:
1. Lauren Faust has stated several times that the show was not designed just for little girls. The show was designed for young children (of both genders) AND THEIR FAMILIES. I felt the need to Billy Mays that last part since it is so often overlooked. Here it is in her own words:
2. There are, as I have stated before, numerous references in the show that a year or two year old child would/could never get:
a. The monolith reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey
b. The "build a replica of the city over there!" reference to Blazing Saddles
c. The troubles with Tribbles / gremlins reference
Or you can just keep on blindly judging, whatever floats your boat; I'll enjoy the show either way.

Do explain WHY this thread would get watched by the FBI? It's not like we're watvching it BECAUSE little kids watch it. If that was the case then we'd have a problem.
We watch it because it's a well made show and is very entertaining for both young and old alike.
Don't bother explaining chris, these morons are incapable of understanding. The only way the fbi would consider looking is if we were:
A) discussing a terroristic plot.
B) sharing obscene material.
C) buying/selling/trading controlled substances.
Watching my little pony is about as suspicious as the stupid feth commenting on it.
I'm sorry, but love and tolerance can only go so far.

So, why has this show become so popular over the last few months? I never watched it myself,. and no I'm not trying to troll, and not trying to insult anybody, I just don't understand why this show become so big.

Why? It just is I guess. I mean, I love the show, it's pretty well written, compared to many cartoons these days.

I'm trying to figure out how to phrase this best. Basically, the show is well written, well animated, well voiced and is just generally enjoyable. I think a lot of the hate that it gets is because people hear "My Little Pony" and automatically think of the old show.
Well this isn't the old show. It's not girly, it's not sappy, it's not saccharine nor does it talk down to its audience. If the show had been made as a completely new series, with all original characters and different animals then I don't think it would see as much hate as it does. Heck, people would be fawning all over it like they do now but without getting told the FBI is watching them...
Instead, people hear "My Little Pony" and immediately write it off as girly crap. Well, their loss I suppose.
OK, my last post was hipocritical, what I should of said is its just awkward to most or some other people that others watch a show meant for children, given my avatar, i just like the animation it was supposed to have and yes it was a childhood memory that you just grasp onto, thats that part, but I also think that this is the wrong place for MLP discussion plainly because its a GW forum, not MLP forum, so i would probably consider either making another forum or moving onto an actual MLP forum.
again not hating, just trying to get a point across.

I read this and decided that i should do some research before posting so i watched some episodes and all i have to say is that this show is like an evil enchantress, if you look in its eyes it will put you in trances. (BTW i am now hooked on this show. I like rainbow dash best)

The clip of Pinkie Pie's Evil Enchantress song, as sung by Flutterguy is what intrigued me enough to actually watch it. There are a couple pretty awesome remixes floating around on Youtube as well.
This thread is... intriguing. I'm genuinely interested, but at the same time I'm so very afraid to watch it. I feel like if I watch it that I'll be mesmerized and converted. Sort of like being brainwashed and indoctrinated into a cult of some sort. You guys even have your own jargon!
Infreak wrote:This thread is... intriguing. I'm genuinely interested, but at the same time I'm so very afraid to watch it.
At worst, you'll appreciate the wider audience the show attempts to cater to. Of course it is a Hasbro marketing ploy through and through, but it is a well written Hasbro marketing ploy.

Just how much do these Pwnies pwn ...... Sorry I had to
Very much so.
Also, if any religion were to delcare that THIS was their afterlife? I'd expect mass coversions.
To be fair, I believe that while they might be quite commercial to the children who watch them, I hardly think many bronies buys the toys (perhaps the toys without "actual" hair).
@haloreach: The episodes converted you? I hadn't seen the actual show when I saw the Ponycraft 2-trailer, that's how I was entranced (so to speak).

As was said, the voice acting is good, the animation is good, the jokes are actually funny, and the characters are well developed and identifiable. Unlike previous generations of My Little Pony where each pony had the same personality and the same style, in the new show the ponies are all very different from one another. They have their own identifiable personality, likes, dislikes, etc.
To be honest, I consider the characters the primary reason this version has been so succesfull.
What Chris said. Also, I feel the Dark Age of Ponology (Sounds good, no? ) had (at least from what I remember) far too many "major" characters, and it felt somewhat... clumsy, or how I should put it. The current one is far better, and as has been earlier pointed out, many jokes and references that were supposed to make parents like it when looking with their children, worked just as well on those who was to become bronies.

I'd personally recommend this episode be the first one you watch.
I gather most of you are too young to realize this, or not done your research.
Point 1, My Little Pony existed as a toy long before there was a cartoon. The toys sold just fine without a cartoon, as they were advertised the traditional way.
Point 2, I have the toys, and did when I was a just a girl. Most girls always said "I want a pony" somewhere along the line, and the toys were great fun to play with as opposed to having an actual horse.
Since I knew MLP only as a toy, and stumbled upon this thread, I found out that is had become a cartoon also, and decided, what the hay, I will watch it.
It is good, not at all what I had expected, as I have seen a lot of the cartoons they have made based on toys in the past.
Did some research into it, and the same woman making this cartoon, was making Power Puff Girls, and that show was fantastic for what it was.
Good show, and you are doing yourself a disservice by not getting yourself, at least 1 toy of your favourite character to comb and braid their hair, etc.
And as I posted much earlier, you can use them or Mini War Gaming at a much lower cost than models you can pretend they are. Your opponent will be horrified.

Point costs will be higher than vanilla SMs and GKs. Statwise will be about the same as SMs, but the average unit will be classified as beasts to represent their horse-like nature to compensate for higher costs. Jump beasts will be able to move 12" and assault 12".
Each unit essentially gains an ability if within 12" of another friendly unit with Friendship.
Different levels of Friendship grant different abilites. Friendship 1 may impart a 6+ cover save for instance, while a Frienship 2 may allow shooting attacks from that unit to lower their AP by 1 for that turn (would have to experiment with what are good abilities to give to each unit, as there will be a pool of abilities to pick from and specific units may be limited in choices).
There will be units, including Dreadneighs and transports (and all Pony Legion models will count for at least 2 models).

This would be a new codex, using base statlines of SMs with a bit of tweaking and point cost amendments.
Princess Celestia
Princess Luna
Twilight Sparkle (always accompanied by Spike)
MLP Retinue of Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, and Fluttershy
Alternately:
Pinkie Pie may lead a group of Parasprites.
Applejack may lead a group of Earth Ponies.
Rainbow Dash may lead a group of Pegasus Ponies.
Rarity may lead a group of Unicorn ponies.
Fluttershy may accompany a Manticore or lead a group of Pegasus Ponies.
Elites:

that and btw
I only saw these episodes of the new on youtube commercial free. So have no idea about the state of it, but the statement was in response to the cartoon being nothing but a 30 minute advert for the toys.
My point was, WAY back in the early 80s. The pony toys existed, but no cartoon. Advertising was done as normal, and the toys sold just fine with no show. So the idea that the show only exists as a commercial for the toys is a bogus arguement.

We should start writing these up..
We would stand vigilant, would we not?
Some comments on that list though:
- Zecora should be in (psyker?)
- There should be no ParaSprites, nor Ursa Minors (and should there be, they would be something the ponies can hardly control, but just releases upon the enemy)
- The Wonderbolts should be 0-1
I like the rules WarOne and Goddard wrote. Okay, maybe not a -10 on Love and Tolerate.
Hmm... Unicorn Psychic Powers:
Power Grip This psychic power is used in the shooting phase instead of using a weapon. Choose an enemy vehicle, single model not in a group or independent character within 12". If the psychic test is successful, move that model D6+1 inches in any direction.
(Have seen Twilight do this several times)
Unicorn Beam This is a psychic shooting attack with the following profile:
Range 18" S 4 Ap 3 Assault 1
(Like what Twilight does to Spikes egg, not quite as much though)
Power Gather This psychic power can be used in the beginning of every player turn. If the psychic test is successful, the model counts as using power wepons until the end of the turn.
(Sorta like hammerhand, the unicorns gather magic in their horns making them effective weapons - this is supposed to work with that unicorn troop choice)
Trixie could be an upgrade to a squad of unicorns. A possible statline. WS 4 BS 4 T3 (ponies should be relatively tough) S3 W2 (she's special ) I4 LD 8 Sv 6++ She has a retinue of Snips and Snails. Average ponies? WS 3 BS 3 T3 I3 LD 7 Sv 6++ (they are ponies) They have the look out! Argh! rule for trixie as they are her very devoted fans. She has one psychic power Smoke and Mirrors She confuses and dazes the enemy with lots of colourful and bright flashes. This psychic power is used at the start of the psyker's movement phase. In the turn this psychic power is used, one enemy unit 12" away from Trixie must take a pinning check and shoot using the night fighting rules for the rest of the opponent's shooting phase. Trixie and any accompaning retinue get a 4+ cover save and defensive grenades for the rest of the turn.
I also think that ponies should be able to do that psychic choir thing like in the IG. S=number of unicorn ponies in squad AP=D6 Largeblast Unicorns should also all have psyker master level 1 and force weapons.
Pegasus Pony WS3 BS4 S3 T3 I5 Ld8 Sv5++ (dodge save when or when not in combat?)
Unicorns should also all have psyker master level 1 and force weapons.
Master lvl 1, yes, force weapons, I dunno. Power weapons maybe, but I don't feel their horns can rip apart someones soul unless they are seriously charged with magic.
Also, Nightmare Moon as the nightbringer.
A bit like O'Shovah (may ot have any of the other unique characters, except maybe Trixie?), then?
I'd go for Bridle Gossip, myself. Party of One is fantastic, but it requires a bit more back knowledge of Pinkie Pie to really appreciate her going full-on cupcakes.

There are something's in FiM that are too cute and are annoying. The CMCs really bug me and they're one of the aspects that obviously ONLY are in the show for their target audience. My favorite character is Pinkie Pie because I like random, off the wall, absurd characters. I don't think she's a 'cute' character. She's more of a sugar addicted ADD nutcase.

@ goddard- ive been here for the thread, dont remember much in the way of real reasons.
@lord poison- let me try: it has odd humor that was made to were it can make both kids and adults laugh. it has rich characters, some of which have personalities leaning more towards an adults view than a child's. it has no huge storyline so you wont have to worry if you miss an episode. it is well animated. it has creepy moments.
if you ignore the rainbows its a pretty interesting show.
I haven't watched the show yet, but my wife was a big fan of the original and I'm sure she'll get around to seeing its latest reincarnation. You just watched the beginning of one of the best family-friendly cartoons in the past ten years. The only "family-friendly" (and I use the term loosely) cartoon that debuted in the new millennium that I can think of that comes even close to this in terms of quality is Invader Zim.

For me, the verdict is still out on that. Invader Zim continued to supply quality writing and take it to eleven, just about every episode.
I guess I'll have to watch a few more to see if it holds up to that quality... WAITAMINUTE.

I assure you that I'm not crazy.
Invader Zim has interesting commentary on humanity.
Of course, the creator of Invader Zim is known for his distain of humanity in general.
I thought he got a good laugh when a MAJOR CHILDREN'S NETWORK DECIDED TO SELECT HIM TO CREATE A CHILDREN'S SHOW.
Assuming of course the the network executives were probably all on meth and had their second frontal lobe lobotomy (after the first one that made them decide to take on Ren and Stimpy) when they saw Vasquez's body of work (read: a trilogy of psychotic comics that frequently involved murder and death).

I know that it would be statistical anomaly if 100% of said viewers were insane. I greatly dislike Vasquez's work, he's overly dark, unfunny, and generally hateful.

I find him hilarious, but I won't dispute him being dark and hateful.
So that probably says something about me.
I liked JtHM, though even I found it overly pompous.
...but I like FiM about as much as I liked Zim, so... I dunno. Some armchair psychologist can go reconcile that.
lord commissar klimino wrote:from what ive seen you bronys dont always 'help' other understand. you usually go tell them to go watch the show and give them no real reason besides the fact that you like it
yeah, anyone else can tell me why they like something but most MLP fans seem completely incapable of giving me a synopsis of the show or why its any good
Let me break it down for you then.
The primary reason the show has such a following is its general quality. Unlike other 'oversized toy commercial' shows, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has actual effort put into it. The animation quality and voice acting are quite high, and the writing is quite good. Unlike other shows aimed at children, it does not simplify things, or try to pretend that even a cute world of ponies doesn't have bad people, donkey caves, and dangers living in it. Seriously, EPisode 1 they have to deal with a Manticore and the spirit of darkness made real, later on they have to deal with a cockatrice, hydra and a celestial bear the size of a large building. All these creatures are treated as dangerous, and are not just defeated through hugs and smiles. Some of the donkey caves like Trixie, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon are treated as they are, and their vices are clear.
However, the biggest reason this show had--and maintains--such a loyal fan following is simple: the characters. Unlike previous My Little Pony shows where each pony was essentially the same character, except with maybe a different colored coat or mane, Friendship is Magic has clearly identifiable characters who are their own characters, not simple flat archetypes brough to life. Each character has their own well developed personality, dreams, and--most importantly--realistic flaws.
I'd have to say that the characters are the biggest and best part about the show. I lack the literary education to properly describe why, but the show actually makes you CARE about them. You want them to succeed, and you feel bad when they fail. Sure, their cuteness may help with that, but the point remains that the characters evoke an emotional reaction from the audience, somethine that seems like a sign of a good show in and of itself.
Finally, well.....
THEY'RE JUST SO DAMN CUTE.
I hope this satisfies your desire for an actual explanation about why the show is good. However, I do believe that you should watch it for yourself. Keep your hat on for episodes 1 and 2, they're not as good as the latter episodes, but once you get into the main body of the season, you'll find that episode quality is high.

In response to people asking why there should even be MLP FiM thread, well...
Why should we have a comic books thread? An anime thread? A Dr. Who thread? etc....
Answer: Because there is a community on Dakka that likes it and as long as they aren't bothering anyone there is no reason for them to not have a thread to discuss the subject.

Also, Flutterbitch was my favourite...it's hilarious to see her being bithcy and cruel, and it's HILARIOUS that Discord couldn't convert her. She's just too nice for even him to corrupt.
FInally, the 2 pony God Princesses banding together to defeat the the spirit of CHaos? 40k Ponies anyone?

I decided I didn't like Discord when it turned out he could make them do whatever he wanted without effort. At first he seemed to have to make them turn against or doubt their element, then Fluttershy shoots his efforts down repeatedly and he pretty much just says screw it, you're evil, and she is despite never going against her own kindness.
Was a little dissapointed Luna was not with Celestia as well when she was explaining how the two of them prevously defeated Discord together.

Spoiler:
I just thought it was just a crowning moment of awesome for Fluttershy, and it actually made me like Discord more. It shows that he's just playing with them. If he wanted he could jsut snap his fingers and make all the ponies what he wants them, but he takes some delight in twisting them into following his plans. It makes me scared what would happen what would happen when he finally decides to cut loose.

So did anyone else squee like a tiny schoolgirl when they learned that Tzeentch was the new Big Bad?
Pft! He's far more obviously Q!
Spoiler:
He can't be Q, Q would have stoped everytning to try to help Futtershy grow, that is what Q is all about. The whole world would have become unimortant as his whole focus would have been to "Fix" her, and then he would have moved on the the rest. Q is compleatly about building the target of his plans into a more evolved person.
Unless this whole thing is an elaberate plot to help Fluttershy...
Q was working things out to help Picard grow, but it was rarely obvious. It usually seemed like a bored prick with too much power was trolling the Enterprise. Only after seven years and a lot of reflection do you realize what he was doing.

Given that we're talking about Trek now, I odn't think we need the spoilers.
But yes, Discord isn't like Q personality wise. Q would wnat to use the release of Chaos as a trial for the ponies to overcome, thus expanding their minds as a result. However, DIscord seems to want Chaos for Chaos's sake. Even when Q caused Chaos, he caused Chaos to some greater end...so far, Discord hasn't done that.

Discord is nothing like Q in one major way, no matter how frustrated that his mind game wasn't working Q never would have snapped
Spoiler:
"That's it, Be Cruel"
at poor Fluttershy, that was just bad sportsmenship.
So he's evil Q then, but he's still very Q-esque. You did catch that he's voiced by Q, right? Helps bias my opinion of him as evil Q. If I was at home and not typing this on my phone this is the part where I would Photoshop Q to have a gotee.

Very, very true.
Discord is much less patient than Q, probably as a result of the fact that while Q honestly wants to teach a lesson with his games, Discord is just using the game as an excuse to get his way. Very different goals.
Ya know what folks? I have just spent the last hour or so reading through this thread (I'm at work so do it surreptitiously) and I cannot believe the changes in some people's attitude towards the show. It's nothing short of miraculous....
Now if we can get world leaders sat around a huge tv screen and play the first season at them, in a matter of hours the worlds ills can be cured. No more hunger, no more war, no more riots.. A complete utopia, all because of MLP:FiM....
I might also add that having never seen it, consider me intrigued

Then we all could get Chocolate Rain and Popcorn
not to mention Skittles
Due to the fact my friends are my friends i already have a pair...
3 to be precise.
Rainbows, hearts and a pair with Fluttershy on them.
Damn internet...

Guys, I have new hobby. Mostly, watch new and old children's shows. All the time. It's ridiculous fun, and lets you forget the troubles of this world. So now I feel I can relate to how this pony thing works. It's all about finding a way to forget stress and go back to our childhood memories other than my previous methods.
Which were, I might mention:
Porn.
Drugs. (I keed, I keed... do sharpies count?)
Running.
Comfort foods.
And I must say, I find ponies infinitely preferable. Also, who the feth cares what I think?
What's the cutoff between fan and brony? Do I have to make an account at a dedicated message board, or something? Or did I cross the line when I couldn't decide to watch Eccleston as the Doctor or MLP?

so have any of you taken me up on my bet yet (I think there should be a prize, yes there should be a prize)
(for those who forgot, I wanted to see which could get made first here on dakka-a pony army or a doll army)
WarOne wrote:We need to find suitable 28mm or heroic size models to represent the ponie. Perhaps using horse models and then trying to find power armor to fit it.
As stated before, actual MLP toys, the G4 ponyville ponies are already the right size. They fit on a medium or cavalry/bike base. This is exactly why I want some.
They are sold in packs of 3, packs of 4, in blind bags, and in a big set of 24, and singly. Right now they are more available in Europe, so if anyone across the pond can find them at a good deal, I would like to make an arrangement.
there ponies..... it still make no since. grass? whats so special about grass? and why use it as a joke like thet? they can eat anything thats not meat that a human can,yet they still eat grass?

so this means I will have an opponent in the doll v pony battle royal! (?)
Yes sounds great. I still need a source for the g4 molded hair ponies though. Not an easy task it seems. Hasbro claims Toys R Us, Target and Kmart have them, but apparently not on the websites, nor in my local store.
okay...I might use the old lost and the damned, because they're the only ones that fit in with the sizes I need and have for the army (fantasy would be much easier but...whatever lol)

well . someone beat us to it

but if any army,i id choose
guardsmen!
Well that was awsome, Trixie's cuttie mark is pretty hard to paint

you can use fantasy models, but it would take some effort to convert them to 40k. i think.
well I meant fantasy rules but, I will just use the chaos demon rules for the "army list" (the horror's weird attacks makes sense for the dolls and their magic)
ah,ok. use fantasy models and 40k rules. cool. if you get it done, ill tip my hat to you in respect, then wait to see how many angry gamers show up at your door saying you ruined 40k
hey, my dolls are made of resin lol I donno which gamers would react harsher to; a doll army or a mlp army (dolls can be made to look evil the bjd's will have tiny macha suits made for them)
ponies are...ponies
unless the person is a fan they might not see the appeal
no I already own the dolls, the macha suit was originally for a con but I figure this is also a worthy cause (at first it was going to be of Tom Servo and Crow but had a tricky time with one of their heads fitting, it was a hassle).
the suits are made of plasticard, business cards and bitz(and magnets)
and yes, I play yugioh, it was either that or Bolt Penguin but Lord Poison had a better ring
