After the first two episodes the first season sort of changed direction. If after watching the first 2, and then 2 more from the rest of the season and you still don't like it, well you just won't like it in general methinks.
htj wrote:One and a half episodes in and I'm left kinda cold. Does it get better?
TWatch the first 2 episodes to get to know the characters, then skip forward to things like Dragonshy, a Dog and Pony Show, Bridle Gossip and Party of One. That's when the show starts getting really good.

If a thread gets very long, usually into the hundreds of pages, most forum systems will be unable to keep track of what page is which somewhere along the line, and the page numbers will not line up with what the little numbers in the lower right claim.
We accomplished this years ago on Mechwarriorleagues.com with the Uber Thread. Where last I saw it, was up around 3000 pages.

Let me break it down for you then.
The primary reason the show has such a following is its general quality. Unlike other 'oversized toy commercial' shows, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has actual effort put into it. The animation quality and voice acting are quite high, and the writing is quite good. Unlike other shows aimed at children, it does not simplify things, or try to pretend that even a cute world of ponies doesn't have bad people, donkey caves, and dangers living in it. Seriously, EPisode 1 they have to deal with a Manticore and the spirit of darkness made real, later on they have to deal with a cockatrice, hydra and a celestial bear the size of a large building. All these creatures are treated as dangerous, and are not just defeated through hugs and smiles. Some of the donkey caves like Trixie, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon are treated as they are, and their vices are clear.
However, the biggest reason this show had--and maintains--such a loyal fan following is simple: the characters. Unlike previous My Little Pony shows where each pony was essentially the same character, except with maybe a different colored coat or mane, Friendship is Magic has clearly identifiable characters who are their own characters, not simple flat archetypes brough to life. Each character has their own well developed personality, dreams, and--most importantly--realistic flaws.
I'd have to say that the characters are the biggest and best part about the show. I lack the literary education to properly describe why, but the show actually makes you CARE about them. You want them to succeed, and you feel bad when they fail. Sure, their cuteness may help with that, but the point remains that the characters evoke an emotional reaction from the audience, somethine that seems like a sign of a good show in and of itself.
Finally, well.....
THEY'RE JUST SO DAMN CUTE.
I hope this satisfies your desire for an actual explanation about why the show is good. However, I do believe that you should watch it for yourself. Keep your hat on for episodes 1 and 2, they're not as good as the latter episodes, but once you get into the main body of the season, you'll find that episode quality is high.
At the end with Discord, when he was filling the glass, I was thinking "man, that's a cheap animation, the cup filling from the top and all."
Then I realized it made sense because it didn't make sense.
Then he drank the glass.
This is one of my favorite, if not the favorite, episodes. The ending was just icing on the cake. I think more references will start slipping in as bronies become more prominent.
I, alas, cannot actually watch the show, due to me living in a third-world country, it makes it neigh(see what I did there?) on impossible to even buffer these on the web.

Make a thread on a MLP message board and I can almost guarantee that someone will burn them to a disc for you and mail it.
they defeated discord already? damn I was hoping they would get away from the whole slice of life episodic nature of the first series as that is the only thing I disliked about it.

Eh, Lauren hinted that there might be more storylines....hopefully she's right, and it's not just all slice of life.

They wouldn't use Gentleman as it uses Man, so they use Gentlecolts, which refers to a Colt, or a male pony.

Think about it.
Then again, we're properly humans... so the equivalent would be "Gentlehuman" or some such, yes?
It occurred to me that this topic is a glimmering beacon of light, hope, happiness and friendship in a dark unfriendly forum that's supposed to be host to various grimdark hobbies.
I've thusly taken it upon myself as a GW fanboy to make this topic conform:
Love, Tolerance, Friendship, and Kindness are the most important things.
let’s spread some joy and post some ponies!
*P.S for those that doesn't understand the appeal of ponies, just think of it as same way some people doesn't understand appeal of Warhammer.
Its a matter of taste, pure and simple. People don't watch Ponies for furries any more than people love warhammer for wanting to sexually molest little male miniatures.
I deed! When we did the group of people with the same Alpharius avatar thing, I realized I don't have my usual avatar on my laptops and haven't gotten around to building a potable harddrive from my old desktop yet.
The old classic will return one day, I just haven't done so yet.
It bugs me to no end when writers use font sizes, weights, or styles to convey manner of speaking.
I get it. It's an emotional scene. So the shout/whisper/monotone makes sense. What doesn't make sense, however, is increasing the size and bolding your character's shouts, shinking and italicizing their whispers, or typing their BSODd, muttered words in small caps.
You are not making a flier, I shouldn't have to zoom in to read your work, and you are not Terry Pratchett, though I dearly wish you were.
If you've written the scene in a way that I can imagine the emotions of the characters, then seeing the dialogue is enough for me. You're trying too hard, Mister or Misses Fanfic Writer.

i actually understand using this to convey a whisper,or thought. what bugs me is when they use it for both. if your gonna use it, dont use it for both. make it one,or the other!

EDIT: I do believe I just had one of my episodes. On the internet. This is new.
Ok, while this is perhaps not exactly in line with what MLP:FiM stands for, it does fit this forum in general a lot, I think:
For more than a hundred centuries the Empress has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Holy Equestria. She is the master of Ponykind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. She is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Ponology. She is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls die every day, for whom blood is drunk and flesh eaten. Pony blood and pony flesh - the stuff of whch the Imperium is made.
To be a pony in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. This is a tale of those times.
It is a universe you can live today - if you dare - for this is a dark and terrible era where you will find little comfort or hope. If you want to take part in the adventure then prepare yourself now. Forget the power of magic, harmony and common ponity. Forget the promise of loyalty and happiness, for there is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter and the laughter of thirsting gods.
There is no time for friendship.
No laughter.
No kindness.
There is only WAR.
I'm new here and I love My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and Warhammer 40k. I'm currently converting my sister army (new rules new revamp) to be MLP: FiM theme.
Here is what I am doing:
Now I'm not planning anything drastic but I was going to transplant the mane 6 plus Celestia and Derpy Hooves into my army as charterers.
Here is the fluff with painting scheme:
Princess Celestia.
She is one of the convent’s oldest Canoness who through decades of battle has become one of the strongest leaders. She has faced hordes of xeno’s, battled the foul traitors of chaos and has even put down rogue planetary governors. She is often seen at the front of the fighting with her jump pack raining down purifying flames. She is fair leader to her Covent and has the respect and admiration of all of those who serve under her.
Counts as Saint Celestine. Paint her hair to match her mane in the show.
Twilight Sparkle
Twilight is Celestia’s personal aid, bodyguard and student. Celestia is grooming Twilight to take her place one day. A faithful student Twilight is often seen on the battle field wielding an condemnor boltgun striking down the enemies of mankind. Twilight hates psykers more then anything. She has undergone significant anti pysker training to better purge the witch. Twilight is shaping up to be quite the leader herself and is one of the most promising veterans in the convent.
VSS squad 1, Purple hair with pink streaks.
Rainbow Dash
Rainbow Dash is a Seraphim superior who loves her job a bit too much. Brash, arrogant and cocky Rainbow Dash is often seen pushing her jump pack to the limit to come to grips with her foes. A strong fighter few can match her physical powers. Unwavering loyal to her fellow sisters she would gladly take a las round for them. Rainbow Dash wields an eviscerator in which she handles it like it was a mere chainsword cutting a bloody swathe through her opponents.
Seraphim superior, Rainbow colored hair.
Pinkie Pie
Pinkie Pie has lived most of her life in space onboard Ecclesiarchical ships escorting missionaries to new planets. Pinkie Pie has an odd behavior that some attribute to warp sickness (although none would dare tell it to her face) However her tactical genius is unparalleled. Her plans are always changing and reacting to the battlefield. No enemy commander has been able to out smart or out maneuver her. Her seemliness random tactical plans always keep her enemies out right flat footed as she dances circles around them. Pinkie is one of the few sisters who has a sense of humor although it is wasted on her fellow brethren.
VSS squad 2, Dark pink hair
Rarity
Rarity is the convents lay armourer. She tends to the convents power armour and blesses the sisters weapons and equipment. Rarity has been known to make “upgrades” to the sisters armour and who ever is blessed with one of her special kits is considered good luck. Soft spoken with an air of aristocracy around her she is graceful as she is deadly. Rarity prefers using a power weapon as it requires elegance and skill rather then brute force.
VSS squad 3, Purple hair, glasses.
Applejack
A trusted advisor and excellent field tactician Applejack is a personal friend to Celestia. She has honed her body into physical perfection as well as her mind. She is deadly on the battlefield cutting down her enemies with her boltgun. Her endurance is legendary. When all are exhausted pushed to their limits it is Applejack urging them onward for the glory for the god Emperor. Applejack is known for her brutal honesty and appraisal of the situation. She is a solider first and fore most.
VSS squad 4 Blonde hair, her trade marked hat.
Fluttershy
A sister hospitaller Fluttershy was known for her compassion through out the segetum. She tended to the sick with such passion. Many guradsmen have claimed to see angel wings sporting from her but most attribute these as hallucinations from their injuries. Fluttershy was closer to no other then her fellow sister hospitaller Angel. The two of them would tend to the sick together for days on end without resting. One fateful day the field hospital she was working at came under attack by infiltrating kommandos. The attack came sudden and without warning. In the panic Angel was cut down by the blade of an ork. Fluttershy held her friend in her arms reciting the emperors final benediction as her friend bled to death in her arms. Enraged Fluttershy picked up a nearby discarded lasgun. With holy hatred a prayer of vengeance Fluttersy engaged the foul greenskins gunning them down until she was surrounded in a pile of green bodies. Celestia saw her bravery and transferred her to the order milltiant where she fights every day to avenge her friend. Fluttershy wields a combi flamer as the two weapons joined together remind her of the close relationship she shared with her friend.
VSS dominions, Light pink hair
Derpy Hooves
Derpy Hooves was born of noble blood but suffered from a genetic defect. Her eyes were pointed in different directions and was partially blind. Her family quickly cast her out to the Schola Progenium, where she was destined for work camp duty and a quick death. However the light shone upon Derpy. She was incredible faithful and pious. She sung praises of the emperor’s glory and quickly memorized the entire teachings of Sebastian Thor by the time she was 12. Celestia by chance found this girl and was impressed by her faith. Taking her into the Covent Derpy was given minor duties around the cathedral. Throughout the cathedral the other sisters could hear her beautiful voice lifting up the Emperor in prayer. In M.894 the planet’s planetary governor revolted against the Imperium. As the pdf defected they attacked the last stronghold for the Emperor on the planet. The cathedral came under siege. The sisters fought valiantly to hold out for a relief force of Astartes to come. On the 104th day the cathedral was breached. Traitor guardsmen came swarming into the cathedral. Derpy looked around at the slaughter scared and frightened.. She looked down to pray when she saw a boltgun laying by her feet it’s former owners blood still splattered on it. She picked it up and started to sing a battle hymn in her beautiful voice. Nobody knew what happened but Derpy’s blind eyes focused for the first time. Like an angel with a heavenly voice Derpy walked through the marble floors of the cathedral slick with blood dispensing the Emperors justice to those who had breached the walls. On the 14th hour drop pods descended on to the rogue planet. Space Marines began to cut a bloody swathe through the renegade guard. The captain of the 5th company went personally to secure the cathedral. Among the carnage there was Derpy Hooves covered in blood, dirt and smoke holding a spent boltgun. Bodies of traitor guardsmen were piled so high that they almost reached the vaulted ceilings. Derpy was inducted into the chambers milltiant as a Retributor and was given new beautiful bionic eyes (fit for her unknown noble blood) to replace her old shameful biological ones. She soon raised to the rank of a veteran sister superior her beautiful voice singing praises to the Emperor over the roar of her storm bolter
VSS Retributor squad, yellow hair, bionic eyes.
So what do you think? I think it's subtle enough to get by with looking too crazy.

If you have a slow computer, like mine, you turn away only to see her staring at you when you turn back.
And this is the last image for a while, we need to discuss something. Like Applejack. WHY? Her purpose is apples, but her character is... bland. Predictable.
