welll the new guy certainly wont bring me to say any brutal stuff^^ he looks very good... though with a masked face like that i couldn´t be brought even with a gun poining to me that he looks loveley^^ but i do like the refecltions on his helme(visor) and the conversion as such is wonderful! also the whole mini i really like and it prooves yet again that you fail at a painting that is suited for a horde army... you are a fully character painter and you will stay that way... for me it looks like you can´t gear down^^

thanks alot brian! I think that some lifestyle changes and finally taking action will really help. Because music is my bread and butter, and another art form i hold very dear, it takes precedence over mini painting. But in time ill be back to full strength and hopefully can continue to grow as a painter
Thanks for all the kind words friends about the current progress. To me, im not quite happy with the last guy, compositionally, hes kinda all over the place, but really, he'll be one of quite a large number so its not such a big deal. Especially with the iphone cam, everything is REALLY under the microscope! Fatty, you and antman should hang out! Hes been tellin me to do a grey knight army for the l;ast two weeks hehe! Also check out his work, hes quite an amazing painter and one of the guys at the local shop who inspires me to paint better and better.
And ant! I have a really cool idea for the banner for this regiment. Either some kind of jungle/hawaiian sunset that turns into a genestealer face in the sky with glowing eyes. Or perhaps some crop circle type icons...either way ill see what happens Depending on my strength, more or less updates coming soon.

oh no no! not saying that you should build a grey knights army...i was saying you should convert and build up your genestealer cult army and since that army doesnt exist you can use it to play as a grey knights army (or whatever other army you feel like playing). which would fit well imho since genestealers and nids have a lot of psychic stuff going on as well. youd just have to keep in mind which weapons and models from your genestealer cult army represents what grey knight stuff. just an idea
I myself was thinking of a dark emissary army. basically jut a grey knights army but with chaos models. why shouldn't the bad guy's have a special army?
genestealer cults are a part of imperial planets right? so most people use the IG codex.
I don't see a direkt connection with the grey knight unless you make a sort of count as ...whats the name of that hamer inquisitor dude... corteaz. so you have a hence men army. then you can give your genestealer cultist a monkey
My opinion a no no on the grey knights. maybe if you want something different from the rest.
chaos space marines..... then your brood lord can be a greater deamon (your cultist summon him size is off but fluff is on), the cultist as summond deamons, and some other cultist in power armour as your standard guys. or maybe the just normal marines as i believe one stage of evolution within the cult was normal people.
yea i was thinking a counts-as army...allows some interesting conversion options...
i imagine...having catachans as reg power armored GKs, and making mutated/nidified orgyns as termies, a hulking APC with gun platform as a counts as land raider rusted by years of exposure to jungle humidity...
im sure similar awesome ideas can be thought of from the chaos codex...and plus i think the cult dexs should be coming out soon?
hi guys happy thankgsgiving.!!! Thanks everyone for nice comments while i was gone! Ive a mini update today. Nothing crazy, but a very rough preliminary WIP of the beginnings of my secret santa mini. SO. If you are from aero hobbies. STOP NOW. and leave lol. Anyways, my first attempt at a mini of this species really. SO much touch up needs to be done. My techniques are a little rough from the break ive had from painting so the start is a little slow. Also, what didnt show up so clearly in photos is the transparent thigh belt. His saash and bandoleer willalso be painted clear. Anyways...just an update to let you knw im still alive. apologies for the not so great mini im displaying. But hopefully ill get it up to par. Hope you guys are good!

Hey everybody!!!! Gah im such a terrible blogger:( I apologize for my sudden drop in activity here, ive been focusing mainly on healing myself, and what not. Painting only when i can:( However i am making some progress on a model which im becoming increasingly happy with Ive attempted a somewhat successful transperency affect on his strappings, and a very novice first attempt at painting crystal swords. LOL, while it does look cool, i dont think its quite accurate. Ill have to fix it maybe...also, began very base basecoats on his face, which is a victim of a bit of details which are quite hard to see, so it tough. Anyways, this is my continued update to prince yriel. c and c definately appreciated. Hope all you guys are doing great!!!

If you mean the latter, his left, i agree...i still haev yet to blend the deep shadow shading into the reflective highlight of the top of his foot. if you mean his actual right foot, what about it looks off? -Ive made a bit more progress on the head here. Hair is pertty much done, theres this wierd sculpt thing happening at the end of the top knot where its got a line of white. I tried every possible freakin way to even the line of shade to no avail. I figure it is what it is...over all i like the hair. The hair tie thing i was going to repaint blue, but i decided to leave it the purple tinted bronze ive been painting this whole time. Ive started on the left arm. Base coat and shadow shade for the carapace pieces. The under mesh a shimmery blue again. Shade smoothing needs to be done on the blue before i start the highlighted half of the plates. Also, can anyone tell me what those damn armored sails are sticking off his left arm? What am i supposed to paint it like? Gems? Bone? some Powersword type effect?

Fatty with the awnser it's a force field projector thingy. i give's him a invulnerable save in game so maybe you can paint it like the blade or blue as the arm is purple.
thanks fatty for the info! With that bit of fluff in mind, i decided to try an attempt at painting chrome. This ing arm is probably the most frustrating thing ive ever painted. I hurried a color choice and painting the etchings around the gems the purple bronze. it looked awful, cluttered etc etc. So i repainted it the color of the armor its on. it needs to be seriously touxhed up, i added a few nicks prematurely that will be refined. the chrome effct i think came out not bad for my first attempt at it. here it is...

mate! i would like to see a less zoomed version... the current pics show such a close view that the hard work is a bit lost on the chrome effect... i tried to see it a bit farer away and i think it is a cool new addition to your works! also i see that the arm is quite not done yet...sorry mate^^ i just had to say that... there is something odd going on on the biceps...but speaking again on the sials...i really like the idea of the chrome...that is much better than anything you came up earlier for those!
The chrome does really look good, I would suggest not making it scratched though.
And just remember that chrome is basically a distorted mirror, so whatever landscape the model is supposed to be on, that is what should be reflected.
But seriously, awesome job on the NMM!

@ RS, totally agreed, i was hoping the white slashes would make it looks glassier but it actually looks like scratches >_< . Again, this is my first attempt at the chrome.
@ RW I think a step up in white highlights and back shade will increase the Reflective look
Also, i should note, that what blending you are seeing is W/O glazes bwing added. i dont think i emphasize how much i glaze, but the rest of the models carapace armor has recieved maybe 7-10 glazes of watered down leviathan purple. With some smoothing touch ups and the glazing process, we should be right on track. However, upon second thoughts, the designs encircling the gems, sigh, believe it or not, may be repainted back to the purplish bronze. its my least favorite part of the model so far
i hope we are not talking about those beautifuly done gems on the breast...i think i then should look for a ticket to the states to wash your head!!!^^ and for my own endeavors i take an honest criticism always than a lied praise...^^ i prefer the learning methode by pain... a litle sting around my ear is better ^^

Yeah, the white slashes do look like scratches, I think making it chrome will give it all the glossiness it needs.
What you have so far would make my attempts look like a child's! No, scratch that your work makes my painting look like a child took their fingerpainted art, and put it in a blender, then smeared THAT on a wall, then hit it with a brick, just for good measure!
To say I envy your work is an uderstatement! Keep up the excellent work!
And yeah, what El Vic said! Just so you don't get a big Ego from my praise, I should say that the tip of his nose is, I think, too shiney.

-not entirely sure what you mean by this, but i THINK we are saying the same thing. In other words, theres too much of an even gradiation from highlights to migtones to shade. I think a starker shade and a sharp white highlight line for the blue should help.
@ Jake, unfortunately there is only so much i can do now about the slashes, lest i repaint the whole thing :( Ill be updating again with some clean up on the arm

to be fair here bebop... we have to say that the arm of siad prince is quite horrible looking ...i think the arm suffers from the long fingers and maybe too many gems in the first place...

Hi guys. Yeah Vik, the arm is a drag as far as the sculpt is concerned. Ive started on the cloak. This model is pushing me to me limits and im starting to lose control! The transparency effect of the silk trimming is much easier to accompllsh on a small scale. The cloak is proving to be much tougher. Also, the iconography on fringe of the cloak is proving to make this whole thing tougher even still. So without further ado is VERY WIP progress on the sllk cloak. Its starting ok, The grey line in the middle of his waist is supposed to be the sash hes wearing, but i may just paint it blue....dunno...obviously more shading and smoothing is needed, but i *think* im on the right track...
first: have you done somtehing on the chromed sail? it looks diffrent... could be the angle of the pic tho^^
as for the cloak... i think this looks really interesting... tho i have to say you really doesn´t go easy on yourself when you do a mini like that^^ that is one hell of a difficult combination of colors i think...so this cape/coat should look later ona s a seethrough material...did i understand that right... boy you have some ideas...
hehe yea vik, im nuts. So you have it correct, the cloak is see through. So...yeah....everything underneath depending on the angle should show through slightly....essentially, ill mixed a drop of the armor color and a drop of the mesh color into the base coat of the silk. then ill add more basecoat to each then begin to mesh that color with stright silk highlights till they are one then the silk highlight will take over and tie the whole cloak together. Thats the idea anyways...it worked out of the front sash and stuiff like that but its alot harder on a bigger scale...
also, yeah i added starker highlight and shade, it looks alotbetter, but i simplly CANT photo it right, its keeps reflecting the light, seriously!!! so your seeing a kinda outa focus with a strange light sourced version of the chrome. im trying to photo it better for you, im really pleased with it in person, so hopefully that says something.
and boy... i have never seen someone pull this stunt on a mini before...what will they think of mext... you seem to push yourself into new areas of painting constantly...and there i thought this mini was special due to the blade made to look like a crystal and all those gems... now you pull that trick out of your hat... from your description the whole prcess sounds totally complicated... so it is one of the occasions i am thankfully it is you painting that mini and not me... the little strands of my remaining sanity i treasure^^

Hey guys! So no update pic wise cuz ive been away for the holidays! But soon i hope Hope you all had a great holiday! So to answer some of ya'lls posts and what not:
Firstly, thanks for the ridiculously over the top comments about my painting. Golden Demon maybe in 1995 LOL. Even then i doubt it, but its very nice of you to say. Im just trying to get better and i push my self to try and fail on new techniquse with every miniature i do As far as the bronze rim on the cape. I will not be doing NMM, mainly because its extremely small and it would be the ONLY nmm on the mini. The bronze is all over the mini fatty, so it ties it in pretty well. Fab, Ive only begun a simple basecoat on it which first needs to be cleaned up before i even begin to shade and highlight it, i only did it to test color and begin to dial it in with the rest of the mini. The see through cape, needs alot of work, the concept is sound, but its execution leaves a bit desired for me. But i can make it work i think. Other than that, i guess this update isnt very interesting. But ill try to make sure i have some posted WIP pics done the next time around! Hope you all are well!

Due to my medical situation, ive only made little progress. This time, on the staff handle, which i painted a green marble. I think it came out pretty well...the loak has seen ZERO work since you last saw it so thats up next to continue when i can. Also, started the shoulder pads. Anyways heres a tiny update And yes i cut my fingernails...

But I'm still not convinced about the bronze sorry, golden yellow a non metallic colour just seems to suit it better.
Also I'm of the opinion not to use metallics on eldar since metal is just for mortal humans. Eldar have wraithbone and such.
Edit: btw you already are using the nmm technique!

@ fab. I agree with you in fluff sense about nmm. Though I highly disagree about golden yellow...perhaps a nmm version of the color I'm using now. Which is a purple tinted bronze. I don't think its showing as well through the pics. So it does have an alien look to it. Also, the bronze on the cloak lining is barely a basecoat, which is more scorched brown than bronze anyways...but nonetheless I can dig what you are saying

@ Tom...seeing as you brought up the poor photography on my part, here is a pic taken from a professional level digi cam...personally i think its poorer quality, but probably shows the model less blown up and a bit more realistically....with all its sad unfished bronze bits on the cloak and everything.
anyways...some real work sooner or later guys, sorry the redundancy...
also, im going to repaint the icon before the blade in the same marble as the rest of the staff. i dont like that much bronze in one place...looks sloppy...
well what bothers me this time is not the mini... that guy looks crazy cool... but the background is just way too bright in my opinion... have you seen the backgrounds some of the guys here use? maybe you should print out some of these more toned down backgrounds to not compete with your mini...
again...even if there is a still unfinished arm...great mini!

Naa, just use something flat, like a sheet of construction paper or whatever, dark bg to show off a light mini, and vice versa for a dark mini. I can never get my lighting that good though...

Hi everyone! Its been a very long time since ive posted, and probably longer since ive painted. I had been pondering the ideas of trying to start a new army after a long year of things outside the warhmammer hobby. Today i painted my first mini in a long time, and definately my skills have soured, as well as my supplies havin been sent to new york where i live now. Anways, the army ive settled on, is a dark eldar beastmaster army. The Dark Sun Menagerie. The list will be centered around such beasts and lots of counts as beasts to represent grotesques and etc etc. Like some kind of alien zoo. Here is my 1st mini of the army, and certainly, i hope to dial in the specifics of how im painting and refine my skills along the way, but, im happy with this first model. Its unfinished, touch ups here and there and highlights needed on bits here and there. I hope to hear any feedback on anything, or ideas or whatever. Its good to be back with brush in hand but we'll see how far this gets Hopefully youll have another update before 2014 cheers!
...its not the most original colour scheme but i feel its close to the cyber punk 80's glam rock vibe there will be all kinds of furs and craziness throughout the army i think...

Today ive begun a 2nd of i think a 20 man squad of kabalites, not sure...but anyways, here she is, i think its a she. ive settled on a less conventional skin tone for my DE. Something i think a little more cartoony. Also, im trying to keep the painttime of each individual model to under 3 hours. the gun and some deets and washing of the base are unfinished. Also think of adding face paint. Possibly lime green lol. c and c always welcomed. thanks

I got the DE codex and anothe box of kabalites for xmas! Woohoo! and some paint and the 40k basing kit which will be fun to put to use here! Today ive cleaned up a little more on the first two and basically finished the 3rd kabalite. Got a little faster though the position of this model maade some of the edge highlighting a little trickier so i think it looks not quite as good as the first two. still acceptable and i like the eyes and gun better here. dialing that in. here is the 3rd and a group shot of the 3. Still some cleaning up to do...and still unsure of the bases, but i think it works...

love the cartoony look...specially the strong highlights on the armor plates... only nit pick i have is the purple hair...somehow i am not feeling that color too well together with smufish face and the pink cloth...tho atm i couldn´t say what color would be better...
I think they look great. I've always wanted to do a purple or bluish skin tone on elves. What.s your secret recipe? I would definately be interested in your zoo. I built a complete archons court before they had models just to convert the miniatures.

@vik, i love that, more often than not,we disagree on color i actually love the bluish skin tone and purple pastel hair haha. totally cyber punk japananime, exactly what im goin for As for the pink, well its the central color of the whole army so hopefully youll get used to it! @bucker00, the mix is basically tau flesh, the old gw mix. base coat of shadow grey, mid tone of 70/30 shadow grey/bleached bone...then from there i started adding white as i went up highlights, making sure to keep paint wet and thin. ill definately be tweaking that mix from model to model, different hair colors to match. we shall see
now heres todays update. kabalite #4444444444!!! Unfinished and un-touched up. im gonna clean the 5 up all together
Hey guys. Todays update is the fifth kabalite. I used a more blueish skin tone (just added enchanted blue to the initial shadow grey basecoat) and left the pink out of the mix for the hair. Also settled on the color for the tube in front and the slits in back. Pleased with how it came out for the most part and will add it to the other 4 now. The first two i just painted metallic for speed sake, but this blue effect is far more "techy" and worth the effort. Again, slight touchups and some edge highlighting needed here and there, and now that the 5th is done, i will finish and tidy up the first five, correcting anything i see fit alone the way. Its funny because i notice alot of touch ups needed after i post these pics because they are so big The next five will include the sybarite and several special weapons even though i may or may not use any particular one, i like to have them modelled. anyways heres the next pics ffor the 5th kabalite...

: whale, yes It's been on my mind too. I don't hate it but I don't necessarily love it either. However, it's growing in me and I do like that it fits the criteria of a future cyber city. It is dark but it does accentuate the pink, which I think is cool. Also I'm trying to keep from drybrushing and I want the paint time of the base to be less than more. With that said, I'm open to suggestions on different base colors/ideas
Hm yeah, whale, those are good ideas...i tried the grey and lighter metals for the bases...i feel that ive painted/fluffed myself into a corner....i want them to look cyber punk and future city vibe so i went with the metal plasticard patterns without thinking of how limited the possibilities are. Anyways, ultimately, i didnt like the metals and whenever i think of "manga anime city", i think blue....so here it is. slightly less conventional but i think i like this the best....(ps. i dunno why they uploaded sideays but im just showing the bases off anyways, the iphone was having trouble getting everything in focus this time).
.. still the bases are easy to fix and change so if anyone has any other ideas please please share!! thanks all!
Thanks arakasi! I agree, simpler is more effective here. Also the other plus being that it matches the tonal scale I'm using for flesh tones, strengthening that. In addition here is a pic that basically sums up my dark eldar color and fluff concept. It's not my art but I love it!
Hey all! I hope everyone had a fantastic and safe new year! Today I've pretty much finished kabalite #6, the dark lancer. I will include a variety of the special weapons for visual effect and will proxy whichever to be whichever weapon I choose for my list. This way I don't have to paint too many extra models just for wyswyg sake. This model was a bit more of a pain than the previous 5, mainly because his gun was in the way of pretty much everything lol. I also experimented more of the skin tones and hair color. I want each model to be personal. His flesh color was Eshin grey and black, mixed upwards with a dash of bleached bone and administratum grey and white. The hair is snot green a p3 lighter green and white. Definately goin down the bizarre anime cyberpunk path, which i like. not sure if i should stretch that far from the main shadow grey mix that will be the prominant flesh tone; only time will tell Details still need to be cleaned up(some unfinished edge highlighting) and the blue glow is 75% finished. The copper bulb isn't my first choice here but because the other guns are done this way, for sake of redundancy it kinda needs to stay copper:/ Anyways, I hope everyone enjoys and if you've anything to suggest or comment on please feel free!

:Thanks kitch, it's a speedy version of osl meant for troop painting. It's somewhat effective and gets the point across without being too time consuming. Everything is time consuming for me lol.
As for today's pics, the dark lancer is finished. I added more blue, gems, and few spots of bronze to balance the colors better. I'm now more pleased with the overall composition

Great job on the black armor. It's tough to make plain, black armor not be boring looking.
Love the OSL. True, it's not so intensive, but the effect of having it on all of your troops is impressive. (It might also be why the black armor works so well)
Not a fan of the anime hair. I know that DE have a bit of influence from that genre, but still not a fan. The style is manageable, but with the added color...
I like the bases, but the cutting of the plasticard was a bit sloppy, and I think it will be quite difficult to clean up. Any thoughts on how to do that?
If the plasticard overhangs the base, it's easy to cleanup - otherwise, not so much. Not sure how these ones are being done, but I cut out plasticard larger than the base top, glue, dry, and then trim with a knife to follow the base side, filing to taste. Trying to cut a perfect circle is difficult without a blade/compass tool - and it will leave a hole in the centre to be patched...

If you recall, I'm not the modeler that you are, and many here are, so I make newbie mistakes on the ground floor lol. I used scissors to cut them into small discs. I tried to get them as even as possible but I wonder if there is a tool that can do it more evenly? As for the anime hair, well, I've a tendency to use somewhat....um, flamboyant, colors. As the army grows perhaps I can win you over im certainly gonna try hehe Thanks again for your feedback fellas, keeps me inspired
Dark schemes are always hard to pull off, black either looks under highlighted so people think you're not trying, or over highlighted so it looks grey.
You've struck a lovely balance, and the sharp highlights really pop. The blue skin is an interesting touch, not one that I think I would have done, but with the combination of the blue OSL it compliments the scheme nicely.
Wow! It's been another 3 months since my last post! At this rate ill never finish anything:( haha, I hope everyone has had a good coupla' months! my last few posts centered around a dark eldar army that I had some momentary inspiration on. Sadly I couldn't keep it up, I found I had painted myself into a corner and finally gave up on that color scheme. With that a new focus for my plog. Armies I'd love to paint but probably would never finish. ((Seriously)).
So with that said, the first installment of:

Upon the recent release of the new tau I was hoping to see updated fire warriors. I've flirted with tau before and thought this might be a good time. Sadly, there was no update to the sculpt so In my frustration, I decided to toy with an idea I'd been bouncing around. An all Kroot army that's rebelled on its tau owners!! Here's what I came up with with some minor converting and green stuff, which is about as good as i can do at the moment lol. The mini is clearly unfinished, certain deets around, the gun isn't finished, needing more coats and cleaner lines in certain parts. Though i did start putting battle damage on it as the shield too. Also note the red Kroot hand print on the shield. An act of defiance!!
I always start out with a plan to paint quickly as this would be a troop choice and I'd need quite a bit. I'm about 4 hours in:( Also, the base idea I especially stole from somewhere on the net, but ill be painting in a lush vibrant green Jungle vibe.

Haha, hey vik!! I know, it's just terrible, if I could just keep my momentum up! What it appears to be that, when I come back to las Angeles for vacation, I paint like a madman, then when I go back to NYC, I don't even play any 40k since my catachan are in la as well. :( oh well it Guves me time to ponder on ideas and inspiration lol. I trust all is well with you! I was your part of the globe to long ago. At least I think, I was in bern Switzerland for a week. I believe you're in Germany but bern is so much closer than I normally am :p
As per your comments, and as usual dead on lol. As you know my Modelling is far on the back burner and Until now, pretty much I hadn't done a single conversion. This guy here I'd say is my first mild success. In this case, I think I needed to cut his other leg also and twist the waist down to give the look that he's sauntering up the ruin. Good eye, I was merely concerned about not gluing my fingers together!!! Lol Anyways, he's done! Lol. The base was almost a total disaster, not the ruin, but the green under. I used the wrong mix of colors then proceeded to glue grass on it that was also the wrong color. Anyways, thank goodness for texture paint!! I'm very pleased with how this came out. I love the colors and I could enjoy painting many more of these, despite the long paint per model. Here are a bunch of pics. Please offer up your comments and suggestions and advice!

by all means... convert more minis... you soon find out that this part of the hobby is very fulfilling!... so fulfilling in fact that i have lots of minis to paint but being more of a modler myself the amount of built minis exceeds by far the amount (way too big of a word really^^) of painted models...
the finsihed model looks really stunning... not only do i like kroot... one of these days i get me a squad of these too... but i like that strong scheme...also...the weathering on base and shoulder pad looks perfect!... lots of tiny details like the handprint make this model one of a kind...
the only thing that makes me wonder though is why the two schemes...the drone and the kroot...wouldn´t it be more logical to have the drone the same scheme as the shoulder pad and the gun suggests?
Haha, yeah i thought you might say that. I certainly thought about it. However I think ultimately I didn't want that much white on the model, especially the base. I wanted a warm green foil for the rest of the mini. Fluff wise, I believe I'll add many different pieces of different tau septs to represent the many failed attempts to subjugate this particular Kroot tribe.
Thanks steingass! I believe it has gotten a worse, or maybe different. Not sure, but either way I like this mini lol. I saw you mentioned thin paint In an earlier post, when asking about edge highlighting on those dark eldar. That's exactly the case, I always use super thin paint and many coats built up over black to get the brightest deepest color I can. With the edge highlighting I let the paint dry a tudge so it doesn't run and I use a long thin needle like brush to apply it.

Whelp, here's another attempt at another freedom fighter. The conversion was much more ballsy and quite honestly, was pretty sloppily done. I managed to erase some of that with mild gs work that also needs practice. Also the painting I don't think as successful as the first. But it's far from done. All the grey, the feet shield base, clean up and deets all over. But there is some progress to show. Comments welcome.
I dunno I'm sure it's been done to death lol. It's not bad taking your advice with converting and it's actually super fun:p. I originally wanted the shield either an almost bright red orange, contemplated just grey like the gun, but actually, I got the inspiration for that Camo pattern from a character in swtor, so I think I'll do the shield in the bright green Camo like is shoulder pad.
wasn´t meant as this idea was overused... no... i did a steampunk captain america just the other month... although... i used a chimera tank hatch for the shield^^...
so i don´t judge that shield idea as bad
and yup... converting i think is YOUR next level...as you already are a top notch painter... the only way to level yourself is to make new and surprising minis...and in my opinion... every model straight from the counter is been overdone...BUT convert said model...huzza new greatness ahead^^... now i just have to reacj your painting level... timescale...twenty something years^^... and we can talk anew^^
camo shield pattern... now this i wanna see.... recently i have made my first attempts in camo... tho a rather randomly stipling pattern... your tiger stripes are way too demaninding to me to let me try it ... so go ahead... i like your plan^^
Alright! Another guy is finished! I'm on the right track but man this one took awhile. 8 hours for just him:( I have to remember that each mini is different and I can never exactly recreate what I did b4' even if I liked. I did some touching up here n there, I suppose it could be cleaner,but it's pretty sharp and the I phone cam is so blown up. I touched up his antennae too after taking these pics. The Camo pattern came out not bad but I was having difficult adding chips n damage to such a busy scheme that spans many colors.
@ stein, I'm definitely going to be doing that but i don't know if ill use common tau sept themes. I probably will tailor them to fit the scheme. I'm going for bag of skittles vibe:p, lol @ vik nice suggestion:p

camo is really good looking and together with the blue skin and the red contrasts i think the major selling aspect of these minis...
but what i really like is the weathing...i have the highest respect for that 2D effect of painting... it looks touchabble...although my brain tells me of course everything is just smooth...(ok some scratches before painting... but you didn´t really use these)

But since I started my own blog I decided that getting good comments and criticisms meant having o look at others as well. But you use of colors just made me stop. I had to let you know the awesomeness that I see in your work.

Lets face it, it's a small scene. I know about small scenes, I'm a jazz drummer by profession. For me, Its not about compliments or people fussing over my work, but It's a general interest that helps me get better. I painted a mini for both vik and steingass awhile back, and vik was constantly seeing little mistakes here and there, and those two mini helped me get much better because of the interest. At the end of the day, we are all here to share our love for the incredible hobby of mini painting and gaming, and I know I will be more proactive about showing my interest in others work, simply because I know that person cares enough about input that he made a plog for it. @ nerd and shanks: firstly thanks! I'd like to do an entire army of them, but I'm not sure which codex to use. It's obviously a counts as army, perhaps tau. At the moment I'm basically learning how to convert and use gs. These models are my playground. As far as the color scheme, ya, Hawaii. I wanted super exotic tropical Eden vibe. And my vehicle painting is, well, sad. So I will try to avoid painting any vehicles at all. Defnately krootox and hounds etc ec. I was even thinking of a cat people race as an auxiliary. Need to ifnd heads though. Anywho, here's another guy close to being fully modeled. Need to smoth out here n there but I think I'm getting better. I also need to still do the antennae on his head. Please tell me where the mistakes are so I can get better!

Looks like n old ork chainsword to me Vik. The only thing I can see missing is a poor helpless soon to be victim cowering below him, but the model exudes enough coolness to make me believe that this guy is about to cut through whatever weapon s put up to protect said victim.

One thing I will say, as it's something I had to think about recently for a couple of my chaps, is the knee that is bent looks like it's not got a kneecap.
If you compare it to the un-bent knee where you can see a clear kneecap then look at the bent leg...
A couple of things you can do; one, you could just extend the thigh and build a knee. but this might make the thigh look too long, it might not.
Two, what I did for my kneeling eldar was to shave away a curve into the top of the calf so it can sit against the underside of the thigh. This allows you to get the two pieces of the leg nearer to each other and then get the knee in the right place and makes it look like the calf is deformed as it would be in reality (Look at your own leg when it's bent).
Also consider cutting the leg above and below the knee if you are bending it a lot (like this) then you can use the actual knee and not have to build one.

Here's another update. Trooper number 3. I'm about 50% done, tons of cleanup to do but it's looking pretty consistent.
Dr H: thanks for that tip, it's exactly what I needed to hear. Since he's done I'm gonna paint me and hope it camouflages it. The next guy ill be experimenting with that technique.

yeah I have a ton of assembled kroot lying around. with 5 krootox. I was also trying to go for a count as army. the codex i would have used would have been imperial guard. krotox as heavy weapon platforms, command squads are close to kroot shaper's as they direkt what they eat. gnarloc riders as cav. and hounds well i still havent found a place for them
plus it would be awesome to include a sly marbo kroot.

I think what I might do is use a space marine codex. That could be good fun, do a counts as that way. Maybe do trees as drop pods, and cold ones as bikes. Hmm I dunno it could be cool. also less guys to paint. And devastators.

Now here's today's update. The finished 3rd, trooper. So, in basically 2 weeks, that's three guys, 4 built. :/ not exactly the fastest paint up, but it's good that I'm not a commission painter lol. I redid the right hand vik, and softened the left, though forgot to redo the inside of the left hand, it'd be done by the time you read this. The skin softened up and cleaned. The wash on the base is still a slight bit wet there too btw. Also went for a reptilian thing on the leg he's about to eat. Or fish. Not sure really. Something alien. Lol. And the pose only slightly converted is quite passive. So here's a bunch of pics

cool... that guy looks really nice... the highlights look way better now... and i like the slice of meat he is about to gulp down... that´s characterful converting!... and i think you are doing great... i have lots of models but i only convert them and then fret to paint them... so you do it all step by step... we´ll see who´s methode wins the most painted and finished models^^...(not argueing about the quality as mine are OBVIOUSLY not that good looking )
Thanks everybody I can't help but look back at my earlier works in this thread and feel though my painting has taken a step back, but as a musician, I deal with hand pain more often than not and it has changed the way I paint, where before I'd do tons of wet blending and watered coats, now I'm more trying to find that Dave Taylor balance of creative strong themes and good army painting. I think this theme is that. Its really fun to paint and is a direct link to my inspiration for color design. 256super vga anyone? Note to self, I need to make the head bands the same size. Noticed it more in the pics and now it bothers me, so from now on, that'll be taken care of.
Tomorrow I go back to NYC, so I won't have any painting done till I get bk next week :( but i did organize my bitboxs today took all freakin day. I was having trouble deciding how I wanted to break things up, whether by design or by product or race or size:/ so many options! Anyways cheers everyone!
sorting my bitz box is one hell of a fun time... i always play around for new ideas then... and well i often have to re-sort anyway... so most likley you will use another filing and sorting system sooner than you think^^...
once you start converting it kinda flows into a big ball of bitz... i just recently resorted everything... now i have zillion heads arms and legs and guns and suchlike all sorted in different categories... but soon it will all get mixed again as i make seperate project related boxes and these then have to be sorted again in an herculeian effort^^
It was truly a blast. I had 75% of the classic space ork box still on the sprue. Cut all those bits and body's loose, so I've got a ton of those old classic bolters. That chainsword on the previous kroot is from there. And also about 80% of the classic warhammer regiments box, that was pretty much the worst plastic models gw ever made, but has a bazillion heads. Just do so so much random stuff, then of course my ig bits....seeing as I've been collecting for 25 years there's quite the walk down memory lane, plus almost every mini I've ever painted. Ever. !!!
well i say organize by project... read... i just take a tuperware box and put inside what i deem worthy of the next project...then i forget about the project due to hobby ADD... and soon i have to look for said box again... it really is nice to re-find stuff you thought had gone^^
I even bought her her very own set of 'Eavy Metal brushes..still in the package So is her Dwarf Battalion
And yes..I eyeball them..often
But she's read every single Gotrek and Felix book.
Lookin' flash Bebop! I like the sense of coherency between these guys, despite them being quite different. The highlights really make the natural aspect of them look quite real. Oh and out of interest can I ask what they're fighting for freedom against? It better not be the Tau

I'm glad to find this blog, those Kroot are looking great, I absolutely love the poisonous tropical theme you went with. I wish I had seen that idea for doing the meat accessories that come on the Kroot sprue, it's brilliant. I've been doing just simple reds and oranges to represent generic butchered meat, but your method of painting it as part of another exotic animal is great. The added Tau equipment and armor also looks great, I found that mixing the high tech with the low tech can provide some very pleasing aesthetics when it comes to Tau/Kroot. I did one myself a while back:
One idea I had was to make a Kroot sniper using the gun from the Tau sniper drones. I think you would be able to pull it off better than me, if you were interested at all. If you're looking to create a counts-as list that doesn't require a lot of models, I have had a great time using Dark Eldar. The other idea I had was to use henchmen-heavy Grey Knights. The model I posted was actually going to be a Jokearo Weaponsmith. The Grey Knights list gives you lots of ideas for using converted Kroot models, and it sounds like you were interested in going Space Marines anyway. Before I went with Dark Eldar I had originally envisioned a counts-as Kroot list with Inquisitor Coteaz as a Kroot in a stealth suit, Great Knarlocs as Dread Knights, Kroot as Henchmen, which gives you lots of options to model a single Kroot (weaponsmiths, acolytes, mystics, death cult assasins, crusaders). Your converting and painting skills would be more than adequate to be able to properly represent all the different infantry options in that list.

Thanks, bebop, I'm a fan of your projects (I used to run Kroot Mercenaries versus Catachan Jungle Fighters in the old Jungle-Fight Codex days). It's a shame that these armies were forgotten once fifth edition came around. I'm looking forward to see more of your work, although your coast-to-coast traveling schedule boggles my mind on how you actually get things done!
Lol Oaka. I don't. I'm known for extremely long disappearing acts and fizzled out inspiration. Note the dark eldar. But the plus side is that the time way from painting allows me to pre paint in my mind. I've been dreaming this Kroot scheme for months so it was a joy to paint ill keep em coming
@ steingass, those aren't bad drums. Rock SMS though obviously. I use normally Yamaha drums. They are a bit tighter sounding
Also, I'm back in la for 3 days so that means one mini will get done hopefully. Here's his wip pics. Had to restart the sword. Initially was going to do a looted yellow bad moon chains word, but instead I'm opting for the easier way out and will do the starwars esque Camo instead to tie it in with the rest of the stuff so far. Here's number 4 of the Kroot force. Wip obviously, much to do.

@ Dr H. Thanks, the dots are an easy way to add some exotic texture to alien skin. Something I've been doing awhile now is adding detail with different strokes and textures.
@ sky, thanks sir. I like the pose too except for the pad on his knee, I think it's awkwardly large. But it's too late. On to learning fom my mistakes.
@ Vik Yuuuuup. Sadly, I got pretty far and somehow missed them. I knew you'd notice. Actually, there's a few here and there on this mini. Pretty much a product of building him then leaving for 2 weeks. It's why I can only do one thing at a time, otherwise my momentum is shot and I never finish anything lol. What I'll try to do though vik, is paint them as if they are part of the grenade, well see how we'll I can mask it lol but I'm with ya pal, mold lines are the true enemy of the imperium. Or in this case, zataxallarian Kroot rebels.

but i think your painting skills are capable of this... i still marvel at and fondly remember your see through cape you made for these eldar....that sure is some skill that should get rid of mouldlines via painting
Well, what a morning. I actually set my alarm for 7:30 am to ensure that I'd have the time to finish this bad boy before jet setting back to NYC!! I'm not sure if that's sad or not. Lol. Well needless to say, the 4th Kroot rebel is finished! Under the time pressure, I'd say he turned out pretty cool. I used a different pink to mix in with the purple. It has more white in it thus a cooler shade than the previous three. I like it though, and I kept his belly nice and warm as a belly should be! I've included some more group shots as well. Thoughts please! Would love to know what ya guys think of the progress!

Brian thanks for input. What's bothering you about the shoulder pads? I'm assuming you mean the white ones? Just curious about your thoughts anything you'd do differently?
On that note, I need to start to develop some kind of rhyme to my reason here. As in, I'm going to use a space marine counts as army. I think. To be frank, list building is about as fun as dentistry, so I could use some major help and creative juice in this regard. Is a space marine codex the way to go? I want to limit my troop count and also provide lots of different troops for cool beastly conversions. Ideas wanted!
