@Rogue Wolves - thanks
@LeBaron - cheers!!
I gave the doom grot legs now he's run off!!!
So I got on with the defiler job.
The choas missile launchers mount is perfect to hold my mega cannon.
Biohazzard's mega titan saw, is the insperation for the CCW. You should check it out, he's using many GW vehicles to create a very cool titan. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/399556.page
I'm gona make a bigger saw, as this ork one is way too small or I try to make it into a chain fist, just need to make loads of teeth.
The feet are the next main job.
Could do with some advice on da feet!!!!!

Post by: RSJake
That's still looking good Tipios! I like the concept of the buzz saw arm, but a huge chainfist would be sweet!
33159
Post by: tipios
@Rsjake - Thanks I think if I get a few more of these ork saws I can cut them up to make the chain fist!

Post by: Biohazard
The Defiler toes can be used for the feet. The saw from the Deff Dread kit is a pretty nice bit. It's a bit bigger than the one you have. Thanks for linking my thread buddy.

What about using the Defiler's original "Gorilla claws" as feet? Put the "fingers" on backwards and presto, instant feet
On a related note, that's a seriously awesome model you're working on there! Not quite sold on the position of the Manticore head yet, but apart from that it's brilliant already!
33159
Post by: tipios
@biohazzard - Thanks, I'm going to try and make a chain fist, using the teeth from the saw I've got.
@Kraut - Thanks, Will try that.
Doom grot has now got knee joints

Post by: tipios
This is look I'm going for. After Hyenajoe suggested turning the termie legs into stilts.
I need to make steps for his tiny feet to go on, and also make some feet to go on the end of the robot legs.
33713
Post by: RSJake
Ha ha! Yes! Looking good! He almost looks scared! Like "What did they strap me into?!?!"
33159
Post by: tipios
HA yeah, or he's really trying to keep his balance
34252
Post by: Squigsquasher
Liking so far. For feet, you could use Dreadknight feet.
Also, the cannon arm needs more bulk. It looks a bit flimsy at present.
33713
Post by: RSJake
Have you thought about using sentinel feet? Or would they be too big?
33159
Post by: tipios
@squig - I will look at the dreadknight feet. More work for the arm, pipes and pistons I think
@rsjake - I've got a broken sentinal foot with no toes, it is a little big but I think that will add to the fun
33159
Post by: tipios
Going for the chain fist on the Defilier.
And this is how I'm doing it.
Using what I think is a Stompa saw thing.
Just cut out half the teeth.
And we have a chainsaw looking piece, just need another one to complet it.
Oh and I really want to finish of the IW dread. Just some Hazzard stripes on the legs, and gold trims to do. Ohh and OSL plasma gun and eyes/

@rsjake - cheers again
@Wolves - thanks
Im changing thecannon arm on the defiler.
I think I'm gona go with this arm instead. It would make him more balanced.
I might change the head too, for a mechanical one! What do you chaps think?

Post by: Knightley
God I've missed your updates Tipios!
You do come up with some of the most awesome conversions
47296
Post by: Biohazard
Liking the new cannon arm and as much as I hate to say it I think a mechanical head would suit this better.
32169
Post by: Rogue Wolves
WOW that arm looks really cool! and a mechanical head ^ would definatly push the coolness meter up!
33159
Post by: tipios
@knightley - Thanks a lot matey!!
@biohazzard - thanks, yeah I think I've got to go mechanical, then I can make a mini version of your titan head

Can't believe I only just realised your back! Yay!

Definately prefer the new arm. And a mechanical head would be much better. How about a Juggernaut head, or the horned Defiler head?

tipios,
really digging the chainsaw arm and the bigger beefier looking autocannon!
where did you get the skull helm for your dread?
33159
Post by: tipios
@matt - ha, Yeah just got back, and though a nice way to get the juices flowing again, would be your competition. I don't know how I missed it, as it started last year
@squigs - I'm looking at he jugger head, that may be too small, we shall see
@zeke - thanks, the IW dread head, is a chaos shoulder pad cut down.
55327
Post by: KrautScientist
Hmm, you know, the problem might not be with the Manticore head per se but rather with its position: You yould try placing it a little higher for starters. Personally speaking, I would try a mechanical one as well as the Manticore one with a changed position and then decide what works best.
33159
Post by: tipios
The idea was that he was trying to escape the defilier with chains on him to hold him in. Now the arms are on it dosn't seem to work, will try higher position
33159
Post by: tipios
Ok. Head on top, and seeing if 4 arms are better than 2!!
And here's before!! Which does Dakka prefer?
1
43229
Post by: Ovion
I'd say that 4 arms looks decidedly cooler, and the head on top looks.. cleaner I think.
33713
Post by: RSJake
I like the 4 arms! But the front ones seem to be in an odd possition, but I know you will make the connection to the torso look flawless, and look amazing! I like it.
55327
Post by: KrautScientist
Sorry for being a killjoy, but in my opinion the model looks much better with two arms than with four. You have managed to make something awesome from the Defiler parts without it looking like a typical, goofy Defiler. By adding the two extra arms, you would fall into the trap you tried so carefully to avoid in my opinion.
About the head: Maybe you should try a position halfway between both versions: Not inside the stomach, but a bit higher, about where that elastic band is in the new version.

I agree on this. I dont think the four arms looks very good, myself. I much prefer the two arms version.

Post by: GiraffeX
I'm going to go for the two armed option as well with the head where it is, the head reminds me of an angler fish for some reason ready to strike on its prey.
47296
Post by: Biohazard
The 4 arms is a neat idea but the extra Defiler legs are too big for that position, do you have any sentinel legs? I have to say also that a mechanical head would fit a lot better in either position. Just my tuppence worth mate Looks great so far and I will be borrowing ideas from this for a future project
32169
Post by: Rogue Wolves
^ i agree, while i perfer the first one, i think those extra arms should be smaller
24409
Post by: Matt.Kingsley
how about moving the 2 new arms to either under or even behind ( with an adjustment to the back) the 2 pre-existing arms?
and head looks better in the chest
34606
Post by: Zeke 169
I'm in agreement with Kraut...sometimes less is more. I think the two arms show a better balance throughout the entire model.
I don't think you should forsake the binding of the deamon to the engie with chains that you have mentioned in the past - what if you fashioned more of a 'neck' for the deamon (out of greenstuff or miliput) so it appears that it is really straining on it's binding as if it were trying to release itself from the chest cavity of the engine as it stands...
and more chains...
33159
Post by: tipios
Thanks for the respones from all you guys!!!!! much appreciated.
So conclusion so far.
2 arms wins, but maybe have 2 smaller ones instead of the defiler ones. 2 Smaller arms with a flamer and auto cannon maybe!!!!!
Try head mid way between the 1st and 2nd place. I'm gona use the head but make it half mechanical, best of both worlds
55327
Post by: KrautScientist
You know, tipios, we already talked about it in my WE thread, but just in case:
One thing that would really help to enforce the impression of the daemon straining against the machine would be to make the neck look like it was really at full stretch (a little bit like the one on my Dread, you remember?) You could even use the same sort of "cabling" to suggest the strain on the part were machine and (daemon)flesh meet. Just a small idea...
33159
Post by: tipios
Thanks Kraut, I am going to use the defilier CCW because of you with flesh and extra pipes every were.
55327
Post by: KrautScientist
Good man!
Looking forward to seeing your progress on this!
33159
Post by: tipios
Thanks Kraut!
Hers's a ruff mock up so far. With auto cannons and flamers added to the arms.
More pipes and Flesh to be added.
55327
Post by: KrautScientist
Well, tipios, I can only speak for myself of course. But as far as I'm concerned, THIS IS IT!
Looking at the side view gives me an idea: Perhaps you could add some kind of spine running from the head down the thing's back and eventually vanishing into the machine to further enforce the impression of a fusion of flesh and metal? I am thinking of something similar to the Soulgrinder's back, if that is any help.
47296
Post by: Biohazard
Sorted!! This looks really good I like the placement of the head. I would maybe shave down the hair or whatever it is on the head if you are going to be adding bionics and stuff to it.
33159
Post by: tipios
@kraut - thanks, I think I will try that
@biohazard - thanks, I was thinking I should shave the hair of too
Today I thought I'd try to do more painting to the IW dread.
Instead of finishing off the gold trims and other details, I went straight in with my second attempt at OSL.
39666
Post by: GiraffeX
The OSL looks very nice on the dread tipios, I think you need to finish the whole dread now
55327
Post by: KrautScientist
Whoa, that's some lighting alright! Kudos to you for going that far with the effect, I would have been far to afraid to try anything that radical!
It looks cool, though! It'll be interesting to see how it works out once the model is completed!
Oh and one more thing about the Defiler. I'm in the minority here, but I'm kind of fond of the hair. At least it makes the head's silhouette more interesting. Hmmm...
32169
Post by: Rogue Wolves
that dread looks cool, but might i suggest that where ever the light is coming from (plasma coils i assume) make it alot brighter then the light coming off of it

Post by: tipios
@Giraffex - Thanks mate your right I really need to finish him I
@Kraust - Thanks, I just went for it, may have got a bit carried away, but I'm happy with what I have learnt from it. I been looking at how to cut the hair. I think it may ruin the look of the head too, we will see, maybe only a bit off the sides, which is where the pipes will be.
@rogue - Thanks, and there's still a lot more high lighting to do, the plamsa coils will blend up to white when finished
@Obsidian - Thanks a lot!!
@capitansolstice - cheers!
@Ovion - thanks. I never thought of doing the mouth glowing too, intresting I will try it.
47296
Post by: Biohazard
The OSL looks really good, I agree the mouth of the weapon would look pretty cool if it was glowing as well. As for the haircut, I just feel at the moment it kinda looks like a Chimaera with a suit of armour on. If you cut down the hair add some pipes cables etc and then greenstufff some stretched skin over them I think it would tie it all together.. edit, I shouldnt have started drinking again. My spelling is shocking! lol
33159
Post by: tipios
Thanks a lot Biohazard I think like you titan the head could take a while So you had the hair of the dog then!!!!
It dosn't seem like much, but I have spent all day filing the ammo cases to make them all the same size.
Also I've added deatails to the main gan holder thing. The back piece of the ammo drum will be attached to the upper part of the arm, which I've add pistons to. These are used to pull the ammo caes out.
Also I need to add the ammo boxes either side for the auto cannons.

You sir are mad. mad and awesome to a degree I hope to achieve at some point in the next decade. Until the I will content my self with being inspired by those greater than myself. specifically I like the look of the Termi-Grots and was wondering if I could "borrow/steal" the idea to make more Obliterators/Mega nobz to sand beside my CommissarKhaine style Mega-Grots.

Well you've been busy since your return!
I'm glad you liked my suggestion for stilts, and I'm even more glad to see Doomgrot n°2 is looking so madly great!
About your defiler, I think your first idea of the manticore head emerging from the "chest" was the right one. I can understand why people think it looks weird or misplaced, it's probably because it was not yet obvious that the daemon is trying to free himself from the hull. Perhaps with some shattered or rended armor plates made of plasticard around the head it would be more obvious.
The chainsaw is nice and the canon arm really gives a massive destruction feeling.
33159
Post by: tipios
Thanks Joe. I like the idea of shattered armour, I'm on a plastic card role ATM, and want to cut more up

Post by: ChaoticMind
Thinking about the defiler it seems off without a "head" on top so maybe a mechanical head on top and have the demon head play chestburster. The demon head in either of the upper two positions works but escaping demon seems to cool an option to pass up.

Try to get some insta mold bars. I've tried it last week instead of the GS mold I used to make and it's incredible! Your mold is made and ready for use within minutes and you can re-use it as much as you want! Moreover it's not too expensive.

I've entered Matt Kingsley's comp http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/381018.page which has been going for a year now. It's a convert or scratch build an Ork vehicle.
I've entered very late, so it's only gona be a small model. There's only just over a month left
I've expanded on my Doom Grots, and am converting a Killa Kan into a Deff Dread. I've been waiting ages for parts to arrive, and still there's stuff that's not arrived yet.
So far I'm using killa kan arms as legs, they give a similar look to my first Doom Grot.
Done a mod so I can make it look like he is running.
Cut out the hatch with my new rotary drill
Cut out the front slot too, so the driver can see out
He's gona have 4 arms, so I nee to build him up at the top. And I'm waiting for a very special part, so it will look like my first Doom Grot.
Special thanks to Biohazard, who sent me some killa can arms with chain saws on them, originaly for the defiler, but were too small. I loved the parks so much that I had to use them. Thats why I've entered the comp, I hope I can finish it in time!!!!
Here's a pic of my new toy. It's a Proxxon FBS 12/E rotary drill. It's very solid, and runs so smooth even at high revs. I recommend it if you are looking for a rotary tool.

@GiraffeX - thanks It was always on the cards
Shell tip done.
Started like this.
Here's how it looks in the barrel.
and finished.
Biohazard is kindly sending a bar if instant mould, then we can duplicate this very easily

The Instant mold should be with you today or tomorrow buddy. Like the look of the shell so far.
Can I ask did you get a selection of heads with your Proxxon? Or are the bits easy enough to source?

Thanks a lot biohazard
It doesn't come with any bits. I already had a load of bits from the cheapo drill I got a while back. That are just basic engraving bits. I need to get a circular saw bit. When I get home tonight I will show you what bits I use Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh dear!!!!! I just saw Zinges Led STUFF. nOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I'd suggest, on the Deffdredd, to cut and shorten the pistons on the 'extended' leg- the ones in the back, that is. Unless that leg's supposed to have twice the extended length of the other one. They are Orks, after all.

Are you sure? that leg has the pistons all the way up so the foot can be brought forward, when the leg is forward the pistons extend all the way down, to plant the foot on the floor again, so it will then look like the right one.
Limbo wrote:Iron Warriors dread is looking great, the OSL is really impressive. Also, dakka needs more dangling feet!
Thanks I'm happy with the OSL so far, just hope I don't mess the next highlights up And everyone on dakka should have at least 1 dangley feet model in their army
Big shooter, needed bullets!!!
And I've cut up the scorcha too
Too much strewberry and pear cide r has holted the manufacturing of big CCW arms. Luckily I had done the other stuff ealier tonight.

That was a lot of catching up.
First off, welcome back. I didn't know you were gone, but glad to see you are still around. I genuinely enjoy your work and you know I've referenced back to you many times in my own projects.
Second... just wow. Never a disappointing moment from tipios. I'm late to the party to offer some suggestions on where your projects are at, but I'm going to make the effort to reconnect here and keep up with things as best I can.
If you haven't sorted out the "feet" issue on the Dreadgrots, as a former Mekboy my suggestion would be to create an asymmetrical mismatch of various gubbin' and stuff. You never know when a bunch of Imperial Guard Lasguns will come in hand for a left foot (with a Space Marine Bolter for the big toe, of course). Stock up on more bailing wire and nailz though, you'll need them.
(completely random thought--- do you suppose they still have Duct Tape in the 41stM?)
Good to see you again. Looking forward to seeing what you have coming next.

The off-kilter stance will be hilarious when it winds up Immobilized. My buddy Daichallar runs a Kan wall and his models all have crazy poses. When they go immobilized you can really "see" the machine just freezing up. What's even funnier is if you think about a very irate Grot jamming on the controls and shaking his seat back and forth trying to get the Kan moving again. Hahha.

Ha, Skalk now every time I look at him I think he is just stuck like that
I've got new toy as payment for helping my dad with building work at his house
I've spent half the day practicing spraying stuff. I've under coated a Leman Russ, and my termie lord conversion.
Very happy with the result.
Then I started spraying colour. I only did this on the Leman Russ, as I am not bothered if it goes wrong.
This is as far as I got, because I have not worked out best thinning mix yet, and clogged the airbrush. This was not a problem with the black base coat, as that was already thinned for airbrush use.
But the red it just Vallejo game colour, and just thinned with water. Anyway I'm very pleased with how it all went, I can see a lot more stuff getting painted now!

Make sure you do it in thin layers otherwise it wont dry properly inside and might look a bit cloudy.

I hear you there, the test piece is clearing up, but I did two layers and didn't let it dry before a did the second layer, so underneath is still cloudy. But it is a raging river so I might get away with it if I make mistakes like that on the big base. I may even paint white streaks after each layer to help give that running water feel. Then dry brush white over the top layer.

Doing the white would help, just dont over do it and lose the water feel that you wanted! keep diving deep.

Yes Skalk, I think it could easily be made into some sort of ick I think green could be mixed in before you apply it, but not sure.

Big mek is consentrating on the Deff Dread conversion, so Doom grot the 3rd and 2nd unfortunately have to wait still no legs

The white dry brush looks very good and yes you can mix in paint and inks. I've used it on my Nurgle marines with yellow ink and red for blood effect on something but I cant remember what lol
Ah I remember it was blood dripping off the axe of one of my plague marines those guys are dirty.

I'd actually suggest doing something like a green/teal/aqua wash on it as well before doing the white drybrushing.

I've got some vallejo still water too!!
Here's a test base, with about 4 thin layers so far.
I painted the base with a few browns first, then glued the stones in a circle and poured in the water. I've tried directly onto the stones also to see how it settles.
Oh and I did a thinned blue wash on the first base to see what happens.

First off I have to say that I am to closed minded at what treads I look at. I mostly look only at ork related treads and skip most of the rest. But now after going threw all 30 some odd pages of tipios's tread and seeing those dreadnoughts, dread knight and defiler conversions I have to say shame on me. They are absolutely brilliant. I makes me want to buy some dread and chaos and start converting. And I have to say damn you tepios for that. But really your work is mind blowing. All those conversions even your orks are top notch. Well done sir. Well done.

Me too Kernel
More work on Defiler today.
Big exhaust plus new armour.
Also decided to redo cannon arm.
I'm thinking of cutting down the cannon shaft to half the size, but my cause too many problems. Also mocking feet.
36940
Post by: Anvildude
What might work is if you could push the rear cowling back towards the elbow more- maybe cut down the lower arm bit and just shift everything back, leaving the pistony bit of the lower arm intact.

Anvildude wrote:What might work is if you could push the rear cowling back towards the elbow more- maybe cut down the lower arm bit and just shift everything back, leaving the pistony bit of the lower arm intact.
Yes I think I will try that. So the Ammo barrel will be under the elbow.
Got more of the chain fist done.
And finally finished the barrels of the Dreadlords auto cannon.

Post by: KernelTerror
Nice set of modifications. Although I am not sure on the defiler legs for the forgefiend, I feel that they are a bit too short for the whole model to get a bipedal look. More like he is kicking with his front limbs. Maybe shortening the neck would help ?
Just my opinion after seeing two pictures anyway, I trust you to build one more awesome killing machine.
33159
Post by: tipios
Yes I think the neck is too long. Also I think I need to build the legs from scratch to fit in with the model. Could take a while. I have ordered some other legs from a different model but they might be way to small!!
98297
Post by: MuchoDonchatz
Man that fiend is looking really cool. Outrageous Godzilla Chaos Monster. Love it. Maybe a mech tail from the defiler legs, like maybe from metal to rat or lizard tail then back to metal or something, that would keep the legs from looking like a kicking mule, which I don't really thing they do anyway, but would add balance to the overall bulk. Idk, you've got it so I'll just keep my mouth shut and enjoy the build progress. Keep them coming
33159
Post by: tipios
Yes Mucho, I thought maybe a T-rex stance might work, and a bigger tail would have to be used to balance it out. Used small one here.
95538
Post by: KernelTerror
Ooh, yeah that stance works nicely, I concur on the need for a bigger tail, but definitely has a chaos TRex vibe. And this way you can keep the long neck.

Thanks I will see if I can mock up some legs tonight. Gona have to make some pistons then GS muscle over the top to match the rest of the model

Not sure what you mean.

The spiny plates Godzilla has on his back, right? But instead of just generic spikey plates, they've got the Chaos Star-style arrows as the 'spines' and the circly bit as the plate.

Anvildude wrote:The spiny plates Godzilla has on his back, right? But instead of just generic spikey plates, they've got the Chaos Star-style arrows as the 'spines' and the circly bit as the plate.
So Chaos symbols all down his back?
Had a go at adding magnets today.
Which made it easier to try different poses without any bluetac.
36940
Post by: Anvildude
Yeah, like, sticking sideways out of it- with the largest ones right at his shoulders, then getting progressively smaller.
You know what a stegosaurus looks like, right?
33159
Post by: tipios
Ok I get it now.
Thought I'd have more time today to do the tail. The Heldrake back seems to be what I want, but need to cut the sections out, and realign to follow the curve of the back. Maybe be even cut the lower 2 plates out of the fiend, Hopefully tonight can try that.

Can you make a new side and fill up the gaps with more/would that work?
36940
Post by: Anvildude
Sand it smaller. Make it look like the ledge/lip is intentional. Since you're having that ' barrier of imagination' there anyways, where the person looking is expected to just continue the decoration in their mind's eye and ignore the base, it doesn't matter too much the way that the decoration relates to the base, as long as the base doesn't overpower the decor.

Damn, the close up really shows the sinister face of your mauler fiend, really cool.
As for the shoulders, yeah, might be worth having a look at having them slightly overlap the body...

@kernelterror thanks, It does look better closer but I didn't take a picture yet, because I found my green stuff, which must be over 5 years old. I thought maybe it won't work, but it did!

Cool Are you planning to use the included weapons or switch them out?

Post by: tipios
@lindsay40k, thanks. I want to do autocanon, and maybe a chain fist. I think I can cut up the multimelta to make the auto canon. I want it to have belt feed ammo, m60 style. Want to make them myself but not sure how yet. Has anyone tried that, I try searching, but only find place to buy them.
Anyway, for first time ever I have a dedicated area to build stuff, so hope that can speed me up, and finish off models for once.

these are some seriously weird models.
mini vices stuck to their feet, flying robot horse heads and pin drills stuck in their bum...
you sir are a weird individual.
great stuff really. sorry if it's been asked but what are you planning on doing with all of them? is there a list that you can use them all in?
looking forward to the contemptor rebuild. hes one of my favorite models.

Some really cool work being done here!

I haven't made an ammo belt, but if I were to do it, I'd make an armoured feed by bending a paperclip into the shape I want, making rectangular segments out of plasticard, coating the paperclip with GS and pressing it into having a cross-section similar to that of the empty inside of the segments, threading them along and adding more GS in between them to fill the gaps out.
When that's done, add greebling like extra segments joining or capping the segments, or cables running along the length.

@annoyingusername thanks yes weird, and I love the 40k universe, but never got into playing it, just always went into gamesworkshop to look at the models. Dawn of war got me back into it and so did finding DakkaDakka. So no lists just do it for fun.

@Silver thanks.
@lindsay40k thanks.are those your models? cool if they are. I was thinking more of open ammo belt though.

Did some ammo belt a while back, not my best work but did the trick. It is basically what Lindsay said, except I used a transparent plastic strip as a base. Then plasticard squares on both sides and greenstuff wiring alongside : And another one in the bottom picture Both of em could have been cleaner though, with small rectangular pieces to link the square together for example. EDIT : missed your post about open ammo belts while redacting, my bad !

The models I showed aren't mine, just examples I found of armoured ammo feeds. For exposed belts, a paperclip rod bent to fit - it'd have to be quite precise in how it's curves fit the desired shape, little room to correct with the sculpt here - over which a sheath of GS is applied and worked into a thin diamond-shaped cross-section, roughly as wide and thick as the munitions will be long and wide.
Give it a half hour or so to lose its stickiness but still be workable, and then use an edged tool to press two lines along its length on both sides where the links would be. Then use the same to press in the rims of the cartridges, then use edged clippers to press in the bullets with a little snip near the tips to get them distinct, and use a blunt tool to press in indentations along the belt where each cartridge meets.

Just thought I'd sit down and try a few things on my robot ideas. 3 god dam hours later.
Slowly shaved down the imperial knight head, until it fitted nicley with orignal robot rear head bit.
Decided it needed a big engine on back. Then thought, I'll just bend some rod, en stick it on, easy. Bending rod easy!! cutting rod to lenght and sticking it on agggghhhh
And I've got to do again also need to get Ork another exhaust to much!!!
