As requested, here's pics of my Legion of the Damned.

As much as I can tell you're trying to to the ghostly textures, it just doesn't work. They look like they were painted an awful shade of turquoise and then left outside in the rain.
Normal LotD colours look much better imo.

Works just fine when viewed tabletop. I'll see about getting the army out.

Normal Legion colors = Normal. That's a fail.

Yeah, my favorites are the Dread and the Vindicator - I really dig how busy the Vindicator is. Very cool. Thanks for posting these up again, Stelek!

Here's some shots of the army on the table, again it's an 'effect' and not meant to be viewed individually.

That's how most of my armies are...anyways, here's the overview of the army.

really like the idea of mixing the Khemri stuff with the marines, looks really good. The paint scheme I'm not to keen on as, to me, it makes them look like weathered bronze statues. I would be tempted to paint the bone bits as bone as the idea of a chapter covering their armour and vehicles in antique bronze would be cool! One other little niggle, the 2 side gunners on tour Rhino, where would their legs go as they are right on top of the tracks...?
Overall though very inspiational! Well done!

I mixed Death Company, Chaos, Khemri, AND Legion of the Damned bits into the army.

The side gunners are standing up...are ghosts....are semi-incorporeal...are dead...dunno, pick one? lol

I can see how they might look like weathered bronze. It doesn't evoke that image in my mind. Do the GW LotR Army of the Dead 'Eavy Metal paint jobs remind you of it too?

Marines with skull heads ain't exactly normal either!

And thank you!

I like the gun on the dread especially, nice and brutal looking and as others have said the vindicator rocks. Gonna steal that idea !

Think the librarian still looks too chaplainy...needs ... something to change it a bit more, but I'd have no probs playing against it.

Have you thought about maybe having one of the models walking through an object to show their ghostliness ? I'd think that could be done quite easily with the plastic models.

The army of the dead figures aren't as green as yours and have things like beards and chainmail painted the 'normal' colour to add to them so look a lot different to me. I'm actually about to start painting some for my Vampire counts army as spirit hosts, will put some pics up when they are done.
I have 2000 points of Chaos marine troops that need re-painting and I am now sorely tempted to do the antique bronze look with Khemri skulls, you've really started something now...

I don’t like the paint scheme myself. I see what you’re going for but don’t like the effect itself. I can’t think of how one would have carried off the concept those so points for the attempt.

However, those conversions are INSPIRED, and perfectly done for the ghostly theme of the army. Absolutely excellent. Further, they are quite unique which is excellent and so rare when marines are concerned.

They do look better in the group shots - the whole theme gets pulled together there.

hmm..not really a fan tbh, i know you probably didnt take 2 mins to paint each model but it just looks that way perhaps if the bone was ainted a s bone or..some of the armour...then it would work betted for me, quite like the dread's but the vindi's a lil to busy or my tastes

I didn't initially like the look of the individual marines. When I saw the tank, however, my mind immediately jumped to the "ghost train" scene from one of the Ghostbusters movies, so I think you've achieved the intended effect. The troops definitely look better when viewed together.

I'd really like to see what these guys would look like if they were painted to appear as if they contained a very bright (yellow, yellow-green, or maybe red?) light that shines out through the eyes of their helmets, the eyes and mouths of the skull insignia, vehicle hatches, gun barrels, exhaust vents etc. I'm not really sure whether this would look better or worse, but it might do more to convey the idea that they're glowing spectres.

Addendum:
You might be able to get a similar but easier "glowing" effect just by adding some more objects to their bases and painting them the mottled blue-white light from the marine projected onto the surfaces facing him and the ground near him.

I think he was trying for something like this
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1070182&rootCatGameStyle=

This is a good attempt but his dry brush method doesn't do the scheme justice, it lacks the detail of the Army of the dead. Otherwise I really like the concept and like you said the conversions are pretty good.

Hm... you know, I think that the ethereal effect would come off a little better if their bases didn't match the minis so much. Maybe try normal bases or even some scenic bases and see if that off sets them a little.

I like the ghost marines though.

It probably would have worked better to get this effect with inks rather than with just dry-brushing. But the whole force looks decent, just breaks down as you get closer, more individual.

How do you keep track of what models have what? This goes for your INQ force as well since all the models look exactly the same so at a glance it's hard to tell what models carry the special weapons and so on.

While I like the overall theme of the army, I think that even ghosts would have a bitmore detail and highlights/shading.

I'd have expected at least a few complimentary colors and some black lining (to emphasis the shades etc).

it's not a major thing, but even that little bit would make it look so much better in my opinion..

Nice job though. the do look nice.

One thing that has always bothered me about LotD was that they are pseudo-ghosts thanks to The Warp but yet they somehow found some paint to redo their former Fire Hawks color scheme.

Stelek, I am stealing you idea of using Lemartes in a LotD squad because I never had a use for mine before. What bits did you use for the Sergeant's torso?

I like what you are trying to do here, but think you took a quick way out. Maybe I'm wrong, and if so I am sorry, but the colour scheme your doing doesn't lend itself well to drybrushing.

As you can see from someones link to the LOTR army of the dead guys, they are very neatly painted to give the ethereal look, and even being ethereal some parts of them are still painted normal, like their chainmail, to further enhance their look by giving them some contrast.

All that said, the army look nice enough as an army on the tabletop, but i agree with an above poster that their bases need to be finished in a normal way so that the model stands out more, it would also tie the army more together and if the bases are done to a very high standard would take some of the critical eyes from the models.

Great idea, but I think the regular LotD look too nice to mess with their scheme

For me the army does look good as a whole but get closer and it looks way too rushed.

The conversions are great.

The bases need work rather than their current flat, bland grey sand.

Perhaps a thinner wash is needed, and a less heavy drybrush afterwards.

GW used to have a great guide to painting the army of the dead on their website (the above link takes me to the international page all the time) but I checked the LOTR section and couldn't find it.

For me GW minis cost too much to rush paint jobs, especially after taking the time to convert them.

Some of the conversions are nice enough, but tbh the painting just looks like they have been primed turquoise, badly.

I agree, the drybrushing doesn't really help all that much, and makes the effect not consistent across the model, making it come off sloppy. With the new GW washes, I think you should be able to get a much smoother flowy effect instead of drybrushing. Hell, just start with white primer, and use the green, blue, grey and black washes and see what you come up with.
