One question, is did the judge and the people without certificates qualify at a prelim, and not have the certificate with them, or did they not win in the prelims? One might be understandable, the second is not.
But either way, the judge should never be playing in the tournament he is running. Especially for a regional tournament.

Never return to the store?
There is a store in my area that has repeatedly (like 6 times!) had issues of "home cooking" and cheating (with no repercussions) and we just don't go there anymore. Even though they have a RTT almost every month and there are some great people who play there (plus most of them SUCK so it's an easy win! lol).

Biggest problem with independent retailers running events is thier is bound to be asshatery. I am sure they assure GW that they will run it to thier standards (don't hate) but then said owner has one of his minimum paid employees run the show. All GW can do after the fact is try to change the venue? next year. It really is a CRAP shoot as they say. Any more I just approach it as a oppurtunity to play new people and try to compensate for the shenanigans. On a positive note the majority of store get it right.

That is the main problem with Ard Boyz, and why I dont consider it to be an actual championship. I think that GW should remove the prize support from the event since there are no standards for the event.
I also dont like that I had to compete against nearly 50 people while nearly every other event I have seen described had barely half that number. Im not complaining, I had a great time at my prelim and I lost because I played poorly, not because the competition was too stiff. Still there is too much variation across the country.
I think Ard Boyz is a great idea, but needs to have better control to avoid so many of these stories.

There is no excuse for a top player to play one at the bottom.. That is blatant cheating, a computer program isnt going to make a mistake like that unless you enter wrong information
Plus you can always override the program and FIX the error.. Im glad my store is fair and there isnt any of this garbage going on at 'ardboyz

Travel? Hotel? flight? Army upgrades for tournament? food? Hmmm...maybe he should? He's not the only one to report on this. My buddy had a nid list and finished second. He shared the sentiments.
On another matter, I agree they should drop prize support. I think the 500 dollar army for semis and ubber prize for final encourages a bit too much of the wrong thing.

IMHO dropping prize support is just silly. So many people complain about GW not supporting its tournaments. Bad faq's and the like. Now they give great prizes. Support a national tournament, how well is a matter of opinion. Then ask them to take it away? Store I played in was fantastic. Organizer and owner began the tournament with this statement (Paraphrazed by me) , "I know there are no rules for sportsman ship but this is my store and I do not tolerate negative behavior of any kind. Play nice, watch your language, play fair or your will be asked to leave. No exceptions if this is your fist time here or you have played here for years." He says this before every event he has in the store. From magic to 40k. His store has a great reputation. This is what should be pushed for in more stores. True some things could and should be better at GW tournaments. However it all starts at the store level. Pitty more stores don't follow that mentality for tournament play.

Let me throw my thoughts into this...
GW does not like running tournaments, because of shenanigans like the above. They do the GT's etc more as a customer service thing. If they could get 200 guys to show up and pay for a venue and play in a big mega battle, they would do that over a tourney.
Remember the GT circuit was cancelled one year because of the "fist fight" and poor sports at the Seattle GT. They almost never came back. And the new GT circuit will only have 1 GW sponsored event, the finals in Vegas.
Soooooo.........Yes, the OP got hosed. Yes, alot of douchebaggery goes on. Especially when you throw big prizes into the mix. It is wayyyyyyyyyy too easy to cheat at this game. I'm all for dropping prize support. Play for the pride of being the winner.
And bring back the soft scores, to discourage one guy calling another a douchebag in the middle of the game. I saw this happen at the prelims.
|
.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase. |

I don't know if this really has any relevance, but the UKGT has 3 heats you can attend to qualify for the final with around 150 places each, costing 55 pounds to enter (+hotels, food etc). They offer no prizes just trophies for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, sportsmanship, painting etc. Yet they still sell out after 1-2 days of going on sale.
I don't think there is any GW or non-gw tournament in the UK which offers prizes worth any money, yet both warhammer and 40k is doing okay here with the calender packed with new tournaments every year.
Personally I'd never play in a tournament with effectively a cash prize, just way too much drama as seen by all the threads whining about 'ard boyz. Its sad because a lot of people also had a very good time but if the minority spoil it for some people thats all that gets remembered.

I don't mind cash or just prize support in general, it's only a problem because some people care too much about winning more toys and take it too seriously. They play for the prize instead of just being there to play and win.
I love tournament drama.

This is truly ridiculous behavior by the store, I hope there's something you can do about it (maybe report it to GW, although it would probably help to have more than one person from the event complain).
However, I don't see the sense in dropping prize support just because some people aren't decent enough people to not cheat. It's like dropping prize support from (insert sport of your choice) because there's people using steroids.
Maybe each event needs to have a GW rep at the scene... I realize that'd probably cost them a bit more and is unlikely to happen, however!

CKO.....
This is now the third site that I know about where you are running around, spamming the same story, and in every one, you have called me a cheater. I thought we had settled this on the local boards, but if this persists, we will have issues again.
There was NO cheating at this Tournament.
If there were mistakes, it was Mis-communication between the Owner, and GW.
You are sore because you didn't know that you had to be within 3 inches of the objective to contest, you thought you had to be within 3 inches of the UNIT that was holding it, and there was no way to get your Valkyrie, which is the model in question, within 3 of the objective anyway.
I really don't want to have this discussion with you again, you have already stated to me you didn't think there was any cheating going on, it was just frustration talking...please do so on Dakka, because this is actually a place where people might be easily misguided, and caught up in your libel, and slander, since they don't know any of us from Adam.
@calltoarms I don't know why your buddy has issues, every ruling went in his favor, and if they hadn't he wouldn't be going to Chicago at all. Its just a matter of luck that every rule dispute that CKO brought up was complete Bull....ony.
What's he complaining about?
I am really sick of it.

JediRaptor- are you the tournament judge/organizer, or the winner of the tournament?
Could you answer his questions directly, so that we can see that there really was no wrongdoing?
I.e., were you the judge and did you play? Did you or any others play without a certificate? Was the winner paired with a player with a record of 0-1-1? The valkyrie question also sounds suspect, but is not as clear-cut as these other questions (it just sounds like gamesmanship...), which are simply unallowable.

Lets take the Valkiery issue off the table and address everything else.
1. Were people allowed to play that did not have a cert from the 1st round?
2. Did a judge play in the tournament?
3. Was the second or third place player playing someone who had not won a game in the final round?
