Hi everyone! This is my first thread since I joined a few days ago. I have just recently decided to get back into 40K after a 10 year hiatus.
I have decided to make the ork army I never made way back in high school. But in the current econolypse, a father of two little girls can't afford to be a big spender at my FLGS.
So, I am scratch building pretty much everything

First up is making a deffdred out of a McDonald's toy I saw the other day. It is a Bionicle Mantax toy. I have a few auctions on ebay I won for a bunch of boyz, but it is going to take a few days to ship.
So I decided to start this while I wait. Keep in mind I haven't touched a mini of my own in 10 years, and i was never really good then, either.

Sorry for the image quality, took them on my phone.

Here is the concept:

Night 1:

First I bought a small PVC connector at my local hardware store. $0.43
Then I measured where I would need to hack to make it snug and got to it, Ork style... Rusty hacksaw

Then I ripped of the legs to put the body on. It looks very goofy right now. Pay attention to the "mandibles"...

Next, I made a gob out of a piece of the PVC I cut earlier and a some GS.
That's right folks, the eyes light up. Inherent property of the toy.

OK, checkpoint. So far, just the original toy, a PVC body cut to fit, and a decent looking gob.

Price check:
Happy Meal: $3.49
Green Stuff: $7.00 (Investment in future models, though. So far I have used approx. $75 worth)
PVC: $.43

Total: $10.92

Night 2:

I glued a beer bottle cap to the under side of the kan part of the torso.

Cutting the legs to be shorter and more stompy.

Started placing control cables for the claw. You can see that I have placed some spiky bitz on the left foot in the bottom left of the pic.
They are made of whittled sprue, held with GS.

Sorry for the legs in the background.
I GS'ed the bottle cap to appear welded on, and added the beginnings of the smoke stack in the back.
At this point my phone died. Let us fast-forward to tonight.

Night 3:

Finished the claw cables.

Got the legs glued on. I love the spikes on the foot. I posed him doing a Sparta kick.
Got rid of the "apparatus" on the left arm...

Replace the left arm with a buzz saw I found on a Robot Wars toy at Walgreens.
The hydraulics are from the same toy.

Put some armor plates on the legs. I found these random silver plastic pieces at the thrift store.
The rivets are from the nob things I shaved off of the arms of the original toy.

The back of the leg. Rivets FTW!

Here is where I am at right now. I forgot to mention the wires around the head and chest. They have been there for a while, just paperclips.

Price check:
Happy Meal: $3.49
Green Stuff: So far I have used approx. $3.50 worth
PVC: $.43
Robot Wars toy: $1.99
Weird sliver bits: $0.99

Total: $10.40
$13.90 if you include all the green stuff I bought.

Now that he looks very stompy and killy, it needs some dakka. Any suggestions as to what I should give him, game play wise? I have bits to make rockets. I am getting my AOBR set soon, so I can mod some shootas.
Scorcha is also possible.

Constructive criticism is more than welcome, but be gentle. This is my first time making something from scratch... And to be honest, I don't really have any idea what I am doing.

At first it looked to be the right size for a Killer Can. Trust me, they are total worth their points. If you are running dreads I would run either rockets or kustom mega-blasta for dealing with mech armies transports. Mech is king right now. Plus, the ap 2 on the blasta and the ap 3 on the rokkits will force saves but will not force enough to make space marines worried. So basicly they are vehicle hunters IMHO. A four CC armed dread would be scary but I do not know how you could mount two more arms to the model.

I like the concept, keep up the good work.

Hurr...

Concept art of Ghazghkull Thraka

Ironman Promotional Ironmonger Slurpee topper with warboss bitz. Haven't started it yet.
I am thinking of rotating his right arm (your left) to make it look like he is in the middle of a ferocious charge.

And a couple of killa kanz I am making out of two old tape decks.

No concept art yet... soon.

The work week is starting anew tomorrow. I will try to get around to it during the week. If not, I will update Friday.

Sadly, painting will have to wait. I want to build what I need to start playing as soon as possible. A soon as I get my boyz, I am fielding them at work.
Plus, I have a secret theme I don't want to reveal until the time is right, I want to really work it out first.

At first I was making a Killa Kan, but the thing was just to big. Plus I saw the saw blade and knew what I had to do.
I have been toying around with the four CC idea. Could his stompy foot count as CC? Hehe... Power foot. It should be just at eye level of a marine.

I don't know about the Ghazghkull idea. The picture is making him look like he shaking his on the dance floor. I would stick with running those at kans and dreads. I see you were using some AoBR Warboss parts. Just make Ghazghkull from the AoBR dread and some warboss bitz. Ghazghkull is suppose to be beefy so the dread armor should do well and you can get a AoBR dread cheap.

Yeah, I don't really like the way the Ghazghkull pic came out. My Photoshop skills are the suck.
The toy looks waaaay better in real life. Plus, I am going to fix that funky shoota arm and make the dance look like a charge.

I dunno, time will tell...

I agree stick to scratch building Kans and Dreads use normal Infantry in AOBR you could essentially make a Warboss and a Warlord as Pipboy suggested use the AOBR dread as a basis for Ghazghkull.

They dont call me Garybrandy for nothing!

I am not posting pics right now because I need to get a better camera. My phone just isn't cutting it anymore, now I am getting to some smaller details.

I pinned the stompy leg on dread and started work on the first Kan. I am hoping it will come out nicely, but I need some help with the legs.
I was thinking about going back to McDonald's to keep the legs consistent, but I kinda want to make these things more like the GW models.

Any thoughts? I know I said no pics today, but here is the kan right now. Maybe it can help with some brain storming.
I am down to scratch build some, I just don't know where to start. I have a small supply of plasticard in the form of 8 old hotel key cards.

I almost forgot, I am going to attach some magnets to the shoulders of the dread to swap out weapons. I want to make a full compliment of weapons for it.
He is going to get a drill for the 4th CC, and a set of kustom megablasters, and some rokkits.

Well as far as deffdreds go, I never waste points on taking the extra CCW. Those dreds ALWAYS go bye bye before doing anything.
Personally I put 2 big shootas on mine. Its cheap, and with all that lead in the air, you almost ALWAYS kill something before the assault. I normally say no to rokkits or the custom mega blasters. Sure they CAN do some damage, if they hit something. And they can get rather pricey.

Its all looking rather good so far man. Keep it up.

Very true. I just talked to Kirsanth about that. I have a number of tactics I would like to try on my dread. See what works, and what doesn't.
I haven't played for a while, so I need to wrap my head around the rules again, and learn the new stuff about LOS.

I need to hurry up and finish him soon! After 10 years, I am actually going to play game of 40K! (Behind the laughing facade, I am terrified that Kirsanth's 'nids are going to rend mah green orky hide...)
Sunday the 27th I am going to my FLGS with some coworkers for a game or two. I am waiting on my AOBR box to come in on the 22nd.
I have until the 22nd to finish my trukk and war buggy (Gorkamorka conversions), my deff dread and 3 killakans (scratch-built) and my Battlewagon (also scratch built).
I want the boys from Black Reach to be as ready to rock as possible when they get here. (after glue and such, of course)

I have a question about Gorkamorka boys. They are tiny... Too tall to be a grot, to short to be a boy.
If I glue the original Gorkamorka bases onto a normal 25mm base they are then the right height for LOS.
Would TFG go into a nerd rage comma if I field these "little boyz"? It actually goes with the theme of my army to have pygmy orks, and I need all the boyz I can get.
Kit-bashing/converting/scratch building an army in two weeks for $100 (after I flip the marine bits on ebay) isn't easy; and mah "little boyz" are more than willing to prove they can WAAAGH!!! just like the "big boyz".

Worst case scenario, I would have to field them as grotz. But as far as WYSIWYG goes, they undeniably look like orks.

Thanks Angel!

You just gave me another idea... use some large heads too, not just helms.
