This will be a very rough battle report, as it was not only my first game since 3rd edition, but also my first game with Chaos Daemons, which definitely have a learning curve. So needless to say, I wasn't focused on keeping track of every detail.
This morning was my first battle in the Tale of Many Gamers paint and play tournament. We were playing 500pt combat patrol on a 4x4 table. I had: a squad of 10 Bloodletters, a squad of 7 Plaguebearers, a squad of 4 Fiends of Slaanesh, and a squad of 3 flamers of Tzeentch. Jack had a squad of Khorne Berserkers and a squad of
CSM, each with their own rhinos. Jack had accidentally forgotten some of his marines, hence the unlikely appearance of some Imperial Fists in his army.
We rolled up Annihilation with a Spearhead deployment.
Jack went first and deployed his troops in their rhinos on the yellow hill. On my turn, the Chaos gods were already frowning on my as I lost my roll for demonic assault, so I'd be bringing in the flamers and fiends first. With a cry of "fortune favors the bold!" I attempted to deepstrike my flamers behind the rhinos. And of course, they scattered...eight inches, right off the table. And what did I roll for the ds mishap? A 1, of course.
Jack graciously offered a do-over and I accepted. This time, I chose a safer spot across the table for the flamers to appear, and despite a scatter, they landed safely. Of course, the gods had already decided their fate as we would later discover; it was merely delayed. I also safely landed my fiends, and then ran both squads a few inches during the shooting phase.
Both squads of
CSM drive their rhinos from the hill in the direction of the flamers. On my turn, I roll for reserves and get my plaguebearers, which come in right on target. Jack is unpleasantly surprised to find that flamers are jump infantry, as they swoop over to land in template range of the rhinos. They Breath of Chaos the rhinos, but only score one glancing hit...and I roll a 2 on the pen table, which because it was glancing, does nothing.
The Berzerkers and the
CSM hop out of their rhinos and unload on the flamers. Several failed invulnerable saves later, dead flamers. :-(
On my turn, I get the reserve roll for my bloodletters, which I again bring in right on target. Not much else to do but move everything else towards the
CSM.
The
CSM rapid fire at the plaguebearers, killing two. Then, the Berzerkers slam into the survivors. Thanks to some unfortunate feel no pain rolls, they're wiped out to a man.
Thankfully, though, the berserkers didn't roll high for their consolidation, as on my turn I was able to fleet the Fiends and slam into the Berserkers in return. Jack is unpleasantly surprised to find out just how many attacks Fiends get to make. I manage to kill three berserkers, but in the exchange of blows, I'm left with just one fiend, with just one wound.
I've lost the combat by two, so have two 4+ saves to make. I only make one, and the berserkers consolidate back behind their rhino, wary of a potential charge from those bloodletters which have been moving up. The
CSM get back into their ride, and their rhino moves up.
I'm down to just one unit left, my bloodletters. I eyeball the distance, and I know there's no way I'm going to reach the berserkers for an assault. So my bloodletters furious charge the
CSM rhino instead.
Four penetrating and 5 glancing hits later, the rhino is wrecked and the
CSM have to bail out. Unfortunately, this leaves my bloodletters free to be shot at and charged.
And so, at the bottom of five turns, the Scions of Karnath have sent Coprophagus' Tetragon back to the warp.
Overall, it was a fun game with a great opponent. I sorely wished I'd had more shooting to do, but that will come...after one more combat patrol game next month, we'll all be building our armies an additional 250 points a month, with the end goal being 2000 pts. So in the not too distant future, I can be expecting some horrors and soul grinders to get into the mix. But in the meanwhile, I'll just have to find opportunities to set up the charge with some of my more vicious yet fragile units.
