Greetings

I am (obviously) new to Dakka Dakka but not particularly new to the hobby. My wargaming "career" started when I cracked open the third edition "Warhammer Fantasy Battle" book in the late 80s. Over the course of the 90s I got to know the entire Games Workshop Pantheon of games as they were released (40k, Man-o-War, Mordheim, Necromunda, BFG, Blood Bowl, Warmaster, Gorka Morka, Inquisitor, Warhammer Quest). Later, in the early years of the new century I branched a bit into the third dimension of wargaming (e.g. historical as opposed to fantasy/scifi): Flames of War, Ancient DBA/DBM and a budding effort in the Napoleonic period. When its time came, I even dabbled in Lord of the Rings. Combine this history with a "no sell" policy, generous acquisitions and steady painting, and you end up with thousands of models. A recent move gave me an opportunity, or rather a necessity, to complete an inventor of my collection as a means to calculate the required shelf space in the new hobby room. The metal piles clocked in at just over 6000 "bases" worth of models, about 50sqft worth of terrain (not counting over 150sqft, ie over 5 8'x4' tables, of terrain tiles), hundreds of rule books and dozens of board games. It literally cost me 3-5 Warhammer armies worth of cash just to buy the foam for what amounted to moving a small gaming store...

On the negative side of this history, my actual gaming experience has been nearly non-existent for several years. For much of the 90s and early parts of the new century I participated fairly regularly in tournaments in various European and later North American locales - even winning a few. I also gamed at a number of local clubs so moving and travel often cut those experiences short too soon. More recently, professional and lifestyle demands have all but wiped out time (and energy) for gaming. Perhaps optimistically, I am trying to revive the gaming part of wargaming. Joining this forum is the first step to (game) recovery as the names (and URL) of forums that I used to be part of have long since been melted away into the fog of time.

In an effort to observe forum etiquette I will post my questions about the current status of the gaming systems in the General section.

cheers
Helge

How is it they live in such harmony - the billions of stars - when most men can barely go a minute without declaring war in their minds about someone they know.
