Here's one I finished. This was my first scratch build... well, over 90% scratch build anyway. I only have one set of WIP pics, then the finished product. BTW: This is what gave me confidence to try the Supa Kannons (which, that effort can be found here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/298092.page )... right, pics...

I owe the Kanvas guy on youtube the credit for this inspiration and guidance. I honestly hadn't tried something like this prior. I've been modeling, converting, and painting for as long as I can remember, but this scratch build (or most of it anyway) was the first of it's kind for me. Kanvas's work was my motivation - no question about it. He has approximately 8 or 9 videos on youtube. If you search for Grot Tank on youtube, you can find it. I "strongly" encourage you to start with that if you choose to give this a go. He covers many obvious things that I didn't think about at first.

I took my initial build design from Kanvas's lead even. He has two Grot tanks out there painted in a blue scheme. The first one contains the step by step instruction for doing one of these. When I got comfortable enough with the process, I think branched out. Once you start doing this, you can feel empowered to make the model your own pretty quickly.

As far as what I used, just Styrene (Plasticard). Several local hobby shops sell it. I stick with 1 mm thick stock sheets for the majority of the work (though .5 mm and .75 mm have come in handy). I also like the various shapes I can buy the stuff in. Circular / square / rectangular tubes, L-brackets, I-beams, H-beams, square / rectangle and circular rods as well. I've seen a host of textured stuff, but I tend to stay away from that.

Testers plastic cement, some files, x-acto (hobby knife), cutting board, metal ruler should get you going.

Thanks for all the comps.

Tac

Regarding how long it took: 4 nights of assembly, 4 nights of painting and a 5th morning to seal it properly. I use mostly valejo paints with the occasional GW paint pot or wash. I seal with gloss then matte testers spray. I worked on it from 4-5 hours a night in both assembly and painting. I had less than two weeks to get it done due to a game with the local group that was timed with the arrival of Imperial Armor 8.

As far as a "count as?", Imperial Armor 8 has a Grot Tank unit in it of 3-6 Grot tanks. I didn't know that when I built this a few weeks ago, but I knew there were Grot tanks in the book... so, now I have to come up with a few more I suppose - LOL. If I do, I will make each one unique so I can field the unit. Until then, I have used it as a Junka (Imperial Armor 8), Tracked Buggy (ork codex), a Big Trakk proxy (IA 8) to test the rules, and a half track (Imperial armor 8). I thought I might make three and use them as "bug gunz" (ork codex) but haven't done that yet.

Cheers,

Tac

IA8 is Imperial Armor 8. Forgeworld's newest book.
Having seen the copy Rob (Tactica) has, I'm convinced that it's an absolute MUST HAVE for all ork players!
