Lately I've finally gotten around to painting some more of the heavy Apocalypse support I built for my Chaos Space Marines over the past couple years. Here are some pictures and descriptive text. The larger versions of these photos are available in my Dakkadakka Gallery here.

I scratch converted this Chaos Stormlord the summer of 2008 within a month after the release of Apocalypse Reload. Pictures of it in an unpainted state appeared on at least a couple different blogs and forums shortly after it was built. I finally got around to painting it in October 2010 after deciding on a paint scheme that I first tried out on my Chaos Stormblade conversion, also shown here in this gallery. It is similar to the paint scheme I've been using for my personalized Chaos Space Marine Renegade Legion for more than ten years. Minor changes to the hull mounted gun and small top turret were made after the Stormlord datasheet was clarified a bit in 2009. Highlights of this model include a large Vulcan Mega-bolter and the small top turret which represents a pintle mounted heavy stubber that was deliberately designed to look like a twin .50-caliber machine gun. The top turret rotates and elevates while the Vulcan Mega Bolter articulates to change elevation. This model, which is based on a Baneblade chassis, has extensive modifications made to it, including access doors on the sides and rear to simulate the idea that it is largely a transport vehicle. There are lights over the rear exit door. The fixed main turret is all scratch built and there are many custom cut armor plates and rivets all over the model.

The Star Reavers Renegade Chaos Space Marine Legion comprises many elements, including pirates, cultists and warbands that often spearhead a Star Reavers planetary raid. The renegades who assist them often paint their vehicles in the favored colors of the legion, the deep dark blues and blacks representing the inky blackness of the space they purport to rule. This model is a Forge World Arkurian Pattern Stormblade with some kit-bashed bits added as well as some custom side armor plates and rivets designed to showcase the large horned skull decorations from the Arcane Ruins set.

The Giant Spined Chaos Beast rampages through the foes of Chaos tearing them apart with its claws and huge tusks. The disruption this huge monster causes to enemy defenses is of extreme benefit to Chaos Space Marines and Renegades on their larger raids against well defended positions. I rescued this model from a bargain bin at a GW Bizarre Bazaar customer flea market. It was in a terrible state. It had many damaged spines and tusks, was on a base that was around 50% too small and had a half-finished green paint job. I remounted it on a larger base, rebuilt the damaged parts with Apoxie Sculpt and gave it a new and complete paint job.

Everywhere I'm not supposed to be.

I have but one simple request, and I don't find it to be difficult to fulfill: stop being awesome at this stuff. Please? It makes me look bad when people see work of this caliber and then see my mediocre work.

In short, I applaud you.

If you need me, I'll be busy wiping the layers of dust off my dice.

It's amazing hwo your scratchbuilt StormLord looks exactly liek the GW kit, i coudl only tell the difference from the unpainted WIP pics. Amazing.

i got one of thos Arkurian pattern Shadowswords from FW as well. Then cried a little when GW released the better plastic kit for £25 less than what i paid.

Thanks very much, gentlemen. I have a few other Chaos Baneblade conversions built or planned. When I'm done, my Chaos Marine forces should have the following super-heavy support:

Already Finished:
- Brass Scorpions (3)
- Tower of Skulls
- Stormblade
- Stormlord

In Progress or Planned:
- Baneblade
- Stormsword
- Shadowsword

Flyers:
Hellblades (2)

I also can run a lot of the existing Apocalypse formation datasheets already, like Cult of Destruction, Slaughterfiend Bloodpack, Lords of the Black Crusade and more. I love 40K Apocalypse, it provides so much great modeling and converting inspiration and Chaos is always a great palette on which to try out fun and monstrous conversion concepts.

Thanks everyone!

One Chaos super-heavy I'd been thinking about also doing is the Nurgle Plague Tower. I have had a Warhammer siege tower squirreled away for years now, but as much as I like the one pictured in Reload I think I'd like to do something a little more industrial looking. Then I saw one in the Dakka Gallery the other day that gave me the idea I've been seeking. The builder used a Land Raider chassis with Necromunda bulkheads to build his. Of course I want to design my own guns and decorations, etc. for mine, but those basic building blocks are just the idea I was searching for and I happen to have plenty of both. Now to work out what I'm using to build the guns and crazy Chaos decor.

Saw the Giant Spined Beast over on BoLS, glad to see that you could save such a beautiful model from such a horrific end! All of your pieces are excellent, I love how the Stormlord is nearly dead-on to the current GW one as well!
As for your next piece...definitely go for the Plague Tower. All of the ones I've seen are wonderfullly executed, and I'm sure you could definitely pull it off. If not the Plague Tower, do the Blood Cauldron of Khorne, that ancient Armorcast one needs a revamp!

Thanks, Granesh. I'm already starting to think about ideas for ways to embellish the muzzles of the main guns or the areas in the front of the tower from whence the guns protrude. I'm not sure what if anything I'll do about having large, gruesome faces on the front of the tower. If you or the others reading this want to toss in some "bitz" suggestions here, I'd love to see them. Even ideas that don't get used sometimes point me in the right direction by giving me new ideas.

By the way, when I first built the Chaos Stormlord shown here two years ago it was the subject of an article I did for BoLS. The article featured an Imperial Stormlord built at the same time by another hobbyist. That article can be seen at this link here for anyone interested.
