split off from the BL thread in N & R

I did like the retconned ending where Sigmar himself curses the vampire kind to for all time fear him and his name. Which in the past was something Nagash did because the original vampires (from the Nagash novels) abandoned him.

See, I'm not sure this is quite what happened.. although in a way it could be.

Now it might well be that it was indeed Sigmar's burgeoning divinity, his forthcoming "ascension" ( so to speak) enabled him to inflict this curse upon the vampires. It struck me in the book -- the bits where Sigmar sees the world/the Empire and has pretty much an out of body experience for example -- that we were being teased or shown the burgeoning signs of what he would become -- clue's in the books title I suppose.

...or...

... or is it possible that the curse was actually inflicted only due to the magic power and influence of the Crown he was in possession of ? Which, of course, was created and sought by Nagash. Which would still, perhaps on a technical level if one was being picky, mean that Nagash was still responsible for the vampires (new) curse.

In fact I'm left wondering if it might be the crown, even after he's given it up, that enables Sigmar to "evolve" or ascend as he does.

thoughts ... ?

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

All of Sigmar's godlike moments are accompanied by allusions to Ulric, such as the wolves and winter wind, so I don't think the crown can be credited with that. In fact the only thing that the crown seems to do to him at all in God King is unsuccessfully tempt him and protect him from sorcery while really pissing off its creator.

The scene with the vampires at the end has the same allusions to Ulric. Perhaps the fact that Sigmar was proof against the crown's temptations gave him some measure of power them, but the book seemed to heavily hint if not outright state that what spooked the vamps was the power of Sigmar himself. The vamp in question was very much familiar with the power of the crown, so I think he would recognise it if that was what was cursing him. On the other hand, Sigmar himself seemed to be relieved that they took him at his word, so perhaps it was all a bluff.

I'm not too up on my (Empire?) books/background, so that's all I can contribute, really...

This. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I don't quite think Sigmar was bluffing on that one He might have thought he was too weak but considering the vampire saw that "...all this power and more burned in Sigmars eyes, though he knew it not." I'm going to have to also agree with Temujin on this one
