Well after coming back from a small break I am talking to 2 players that both have 2 full 16 point wins each, the same as me. So we are expecting 2 of us to be playing each other, one space wolf player and one dark eldar. I'm hoping to get the space wolf player, I would love to beat a wolf army and make winning this thing that much sweeter. However as the names are called out I am paired with the Dark Eldar player, on table 1 again! well at least I don't have to move my stuff. Off the bat I know this will be tough I have been reading and re reading the codex but I have only played against them once before and that was in a 2v2 and he was on the opposite side of the board leaving me to deal with space marines. So I don't have a lot of on board experience vs them, at least I know what units are and what they can theoretically do. My opponent is also at the top of a league they are doing at Imperial hobbies so I know I will have a game on my hands here.

Thoughts on his list: Looks like my wagons will have a hard time with the 2 ravagers with dark lances, at least he can't take 3 thanks to the tournament rules. The archon with incubi don't scare me at all, the wracks also arn't scary, they will die in combat against the boyz. The wyches on the other hand are what I'm looking at, with hydra gauntlets and that 4+ invul in combat they can take out masses of boyz before I get to strike back and the power claw wont even be all that useful, I'm hoping to shoot them or hit them with nobz.
We draw from the objective card pile and I get:
Kill my opponent's 2 most expensive troop choices. That would be both wyche units, doesn't seem too hard.
We next draw for deployment: Pitched
Roll for turn: I win, this is good as I at least want to move up a bit before I get hit by lances.
My deployment:
Look familiar? It worked last time didn't it?
First off those green flags are the secondary objectives. I deploy centrally, what else is there to do? Grotz are close to an objective, 1 squad of lootas on each side.
My opponent's deployment:
He splits his deployment, on my right he has a squad of warriors in their raider and both ravagers. On my left are both wych squads, the Archon with incubi in a venom and center is the wracks and reavers. Hellions are in reserve.
Pre game thoughts: Well I need to keep my whole army together, I have tried breaking up my force to attack both sides before and it never turns out well. So I plan to take the side with the wyches as that is my primary mission. I guess I am just going to have to let the Ravagers shoot from far away while I try to pluck them out of the sky with buggies and lootas.
Ork turn 1: Everything moves up 12", the buggies try to get into position to take some shots at a wych raider, trukk stays tucked in behind, lootas stay still
Shooting: I am not scared of the Incubi so I shoot at a wych raider with the left side lootas hoping to put them on foot. I shake, weapon destroy and immobilize it. Only 1 of the buggies is in range and it misses a raider. On the right the loota squad can't see the Ravagers so they take aim at the warrior's raider in front of them but thanks to the ruin providing cover nothing comes of it.
End of turn: 1 useless wych raider
Dark eldar turn 1: First thing he does is ride straight over my left hand lootas with the turbo boosters on his reavers;
After all the bladevane and cluster caltrop rolls my loota squad is dead. His ravagers move up while keeping the warrior raider in front for cover. The working wyche raider and the Archon's venom move up along the left board edge while the other wyche squad sits in there raider. Wracks stay still.
Shooting: Up till now I had been pretty good with my cover saves from the
kff, this changed here but that seems to be how my rolls go with him, I do really good with him for a bit then really bad for a bit, kind of annoying actually. His warrior's raider hits the Nob'z wagon and penetrate, failed save, explodes! So the Nobz are now out of a ride. The ravagers hits the
kff wagon, 1 glance 1 pen, failed both and I'm shaken and immobilized, awesome 2 wagons down. I lost a loota from the right hand squad too, honestly I don't remember what from. Other than that the wyche's raider misses Ghazzy's wagon.
End of turn:
Ork turn 2: So I only have 1 working wagon, I see the open unit of wracks as an easy target and reaching combat with them will put me close to that back wych squad sitting in there weaponless immobile raider. If I can take the wracks this turn then the wyche squad should hopefully hit me while I'm still fearless, I don't know what will come of it but I gotta try to get that back wych squad out somehow. So Ghazzy's wagon moves up to take the wracks, the shoota boyz stay in their wagon, I hope to re mobilize it with the mek. The nobz move to get to the other side of the mek's wagon, I want them close to the wyches and hope to run them behind the wagon to hide them from lances. The buggies move to take some shots it the other wych raider. The trukk drops back to take out the reavers, I don't want them zipping around harassing my units.
Shooting: The remaining lootas wreck the warrior's raider, I don't want them taking my side's objective so easily. The buggies manage to shake the wych raider, not what I was hoping for but it'll do. The mek attempts to fix the wagon but rolls a 3, damn and the shootas arn't in range of anything. And the Nobz run further to my left side, I gotta leave the right side alone for now. I declare a waaagh! and run with Ghazz and the choppas and with the trukk mob, and just run for cover with the Nobz.
Assault: Ghazz and the choppa boyz hit the wracks while the trukk boyz hit the reavers. The trukk boyz take out the reavers with no casualties, the wracks take down 4 boyz and lose 6, kind of disappointing considering I had Ghazz in there. At least they fail leadership and fall back
At least the wracks are gone with minimal loss so I can have a chance against those wyches, and the trukk boyz consolidate towards the trukk. End of turn:
Dark eldar turn 2: First off the wracks run off the table, he also gets his hellions from reserve which deepstrike right next to my lower right objective, by my lootas and grotz. His Archon and Incubi make a move to assault the nobz while both his wych units make their way towards Ghazzy and the choppa boyz. His ravagers move into the circular ruin thing in my upper right and his warriors, now dislodged from their raider make their way towards my grotz.
You can see the hellions top right.
Shooting: The hellions kill 2 of my right hand lootas, Nothing ends up happening to the
kff wagon from dark lances but 1 Nob takes a wound from the Venom. Nothing else in this phase but my lootas run off the board.
Assault: Both wych squads prepare to hit Ghazz and hit mob but only 1 makes it into combat with it's difficult terrain movement. The Incubi and Archon hit the Nobz
The Incubi and Archon manage to deal 3 wounds to the Nobz and the Nobz drop the Incubi leaving the Archon. Meanwhile the wyches drop 6 boyz while they only kill 4 in return, I lose 1 boy to fearless.
Orks turn 3: Well I move the trukk boyz into the trukk and zip them up to get to the wyches, now I had a hard choice to make with the shoota boyz, keep them in the wagon and try to fix it while shooting the hellions, or getting them out and assaulting the hellions, or get them out of the wagon and start moving them towards the wyches. I choose to sit inside, shoot the hellions and try to fix the wagon again, if this choice pays off it will help me greatly to get the charge on those wyches, better yet shooting them to avoid their invul, and the damage they will do too me. The buggies are mostly unneeded on the left so I send them right and into
kff cover. Nobz are stuck and so are Ghazz and his boyz, Unfortunately due to me dropping my trukk back to hit the reavers and my
kff wagon being immobile I wont be able to provide them with support this turn, not a good thing. My grotz also move up into cover closer to the objective.
Shooting: The shootas only kill 3 helions while the buggies, being out of range of the ravagers also hit the hellions killing 1 more. The big shoota on the trukk Explodes! the empty venom. The mek once again fails to fix the wagon, I was really banking on him fixing it last turn now its just more bad news.
Assault: The Archon causes 3 more wounds to the Nobz squad and in return gets killed. Over with Ghazz and the choppas the wyches kill 5 boyz before basically just the nob and Ghazz strike back and only kill 2, and I roll/re roll my leadership and fail both, crap. Ghazz is then caught in a sweeping advance, that hurts.
2 Wych squads were Ghazz used too be:
End of turn:
Dark eldar turn 3: The half squad of wyches that finished off the choppa boyz and Ghazz move up past the empty battle wagon with the Nobz in sight, The other wych squad moves up into cover. The empty wych raider moves into my end to take some shots at the trukk or the buggies or something, I don't know yet. The hellions move up to engage the grotz as do the warriors. One ravager moves into midfield for rear shots at the empty wagon while the other moves back into his end for shots at the
kff wagon.
Shooting: First the empty battle wagon gets wrecked by the rear shots. The
kff wagon gets wrecked as well by the dark lances on the ravager so the boyz get out as close as they can to the wyches. His hellions kill 1 grot and the warriors do the same. Sort of funny for him to have to roll a 4+ to wound the grotz, but that's how it is. The wych raider hits the buggies and stun one. All other shooting misses/cover is made.
Assault: His 4 hellions assault into the remaining grotz, kill 5 and take no wounds, no surprise. They are then caught in a sweeping advance. They then consolidate behind some cover.
End of turn:
Orks turn 4: Well its at this point I realize that its gonna be an uphill battle to win this thing. His large wych squad is too far for me to get the charge but I was still going to try to achieve my main mission, instead of trying to hold the secondary objective, this may have been a mistake however I felt if I tried to hold the objectives he could just last turn contest with his vehicles. So I move the shoota boyz up to shoot the wyches, the nobz move up to charge the reduced squad. The buggies move up beside the wrecked
kff wagon to take some shots at the ravager in his backfield and the trukk moves up right beside them, not close enough for me too assault his wyches, damn.
Shooting: Now I just don't think I am close enough with the Nobz, off by maybe an inch or 2 so I decide to shoot the wyches and I end up reducing the squad to 1, 1! one more save failed and that squad could have been gone! Thems the breaks I guess. The shoota boyz hit the bigger further back squad and kill 4. The buggies fail to do anything to the ravager, neither does the trukk's big shoota.
No assaults
End of turn:
Dark eldar turn 4: The single wych makes his way back too his board edge and hides behind a rock while the other wych squad moves up to engage my boyz. The hellions move up to join them. The warriors start to spread out to take both objectives on the right hand side of the table. The ravagers nudge a little and the empty wych raider move further into my left hand table end.
Shooting: No damage to the boyz by the helions or wyches as the wyches ran, 1 buggy explodes to a ravager. The trukk drops to another ravager and I lose 6 boyz! aaargh!
Assault: At least he does what I was hoping and assaults his wyches into my boyz along with the hellions, so I react and put the vast majority of my boyz in range of the wyches to try and wipe them out.
In the assault all of the boyz die before they get to strike back

and my Nob kills 1, obviously fails leadership and is caught in a sweeping advance.
At this point we have about 10-15 min left until the round is up. So we discuss if we should end or not, my opponent thinks we should however I feel that our turns will not last more than 5 min each as there really isn't much to do, especially in my turn. Plus the last thing I wanted to do was let my battle report pictures and notes to be the thing that ends up making the game not get to turn 5, to not get to turn 5 is a bit of a rip off I think, especially if the game could change in that missed time, and this could. So he agrees to play on and if we get cut short we could just refer to my pics and notes to get the end of turn 4 figured out.
Orks turn 5: Not much to do both my remaining trukk boyz and Nobz need to hit that one wych squad to make sure I finish it and the lone wych is out of range so I intend to shot it with my buggies. Now I made a HUGE mistake here, I thought I could see the lone wych from right behind my wagon but it was it's pain token thingy, not only that but I probably could have just shot them up 12" and seen it from the other side of the terrain. I had a complete brain fart and end up paying for it.
Now my shooting didn't do anything as they had cover and my buggies couldn't see their intended target (you can see the positioning at the bottom of this pic) and I was unable to get a bunch of pics because of the time crunch so here is assault:
I lose 2 boyz and in return wipe out the rest of the wych squad. Now if only I could have hit and killed that lone wych...
Dark eldar turn 5: His warriors finish spreading out to reach both the right hand objectives, and both his ravagers move in to focus fire on my boyz and Nobz
The hellions move up to engage the boyz and Nobz and the lone wych move up to hold that objective.
Shooting: The empty wych raider wrecks another buggy, the last one taken out by a ravager. 2 nobz die to ravager fire and 1 or 2 boyz die to hellion and lone wych fire.
Assault: The hellions assault only the boyz, too bad he didn't send his wych in too
They end up taking down the boyz and nob before they could strike
And that is pretty much the end of the game, we made it just in time.
End of game pics:
At this time I find out his primary mission: Beat me by 2 kill points. So he counts up his
kp: 12 mine: 8
My primary mission: Destroy his 2 most expensive troops choices ie. the wyches and he has 1 wych left, 1, This literally came down to a saving throw, or a single roll to hit, basically just a single dice roll was a decider here, close.
So he wins on primary and sense I put all my eggs into 1 basket and didn't go for the secondary but instead focused on the wyches he also wins secondary giving him a ful 16 point massacre, the third of the day!
And here is the winner of both the game and Best General at the tournament:
Congrats on the win!
After game thoughts: Hmm, I have been going over this game again and again. Maybe I shouldn't have shot that wych raider on the first turn and let them come to me, I could have sent out a bait unit to get them out of their raiders, he didn't know what my mission was so he could have easily fallen for it. His split deployment made it difficult as I had to commit to a side and due to my mission I had to take the left side were the wyches were. I also had to deal with those reavers which put my trukk out of range of anything else untill later. Having Ghazz and his boyz get caught out by themselves was horrible, they got molested. Perhaps I shouldn't have hit those wracks turn 2 but that was bait for the back wych squad and I was hoping to get the mek wagon with the shootas up faster, too bad he failed his fixing rolls, and I didn't want to get them out of the wagon as the wyches would get the charge with fleet. I also committed to the primary mission instead of the secondary but if I had even tried to hold the 2 objectives he could have easily last turn objective contested with his many fast skimmers, then I failed my primary by 1 model. If anyone has any suggestions on what to have done better post them up.
Well that's it for this tournament. The full results from the tournament can be found on vanhammer40k, their was a number of different categories and the only winner I knew was best general to the man who beat me here, I didn't bother writing down all the names for this. Thanks again to Lee the
