I'm just trying out painting a kroot warrior with green skin, and would like some feedback as to whether I should add a little dark red wash to the the recesses...and, of course, if you think it works!

Obviously, a work in progress - only the skin and metal done. Belly will probably be painted in some form of yellow/bone, and I'm thinking about doing the quills either the same as the belly or slightly red...









Basically, do you think the green works as it is, or does it need a little extra?

I would just add something for the eyes and highlight the fangs, hair, and you should be finished.

Since this one is not finished, I'm moving it over to the regular P&M board. Showcase is just for finished pieces.

I really like the way you have done the skin.

I agree that it just needs highlights and some colour on the eyes to be finished.


I would make one other suggestion though: I feel like the green needs a contrast. Maybe something as simple as red tips on the quills?

To re-state the point of this post, the claws, eyes, quills, wood of the gun, cloth, belly and base HAVE NOT BEEN STARTED.

What I'm asking for is some feedback on whether the GREEN SKIN needs anything more - like some more shading, some more highlights, or a small amount of red in the recesses to give it a slight kick away from being just green.

Yeah, add a tiny little bit of red to the darkest parts and the skin should look epic. Right now it looks great but a little extra never hurts!

No, the greeen skin is fine.

Here's a photoshopped image of what the skin likes like if left either as it is (upper body) or with a bit of red in the recesses (legs and left hand). I've also added what the quills will look like if they're painted red. Obviously, this was done quite quickly, so only gives an impression. I'm torn between the two options for the green skin, but am going to paint the quills red.

The way the quills are going to work is a VERY deep red base coat (probably a mix like blood red/ultramarines blue/chaos black), slowly blending up to a bleached bone highlight via blood red, blazing orange and golden yellow.

And I'm not sure what colour to paint the eyes...maybe yellow?

Yellow eyes would be great, and the idea for the quills sounds awesome. I would love to see it when it's finished.
I still think you should go for the red in the skin, it just works.

Really nice job, the green looks fine, yellow eyes will look good imo, and match the quill and skin nicely.

I decided to do a thin, deep red wash on the flesh, and I'm glad I did. I've also, as you can see, painted the quills, which took something in the region of twelve separate coats to get the blending to work...

The modifications you've made are awesome. This is a great piece. I think the multicolored approach to the quills and the spots on the skin really work nicely with the green.

Very nice, I was a bit worried with the green kroot looking like skinny orks, but these are very nice.

The green skin looks great to me, I prefer it to other colour schemes tbh...

Only thing I would add is that I would try (although it's very fine work so maybe only for the odd model depending on what standard you are after) doing a white eye, with a yellow iris and black pupil, like a reptilian eye.. Veeery fiddley but could be worth a try?

The annoying thing is, I've painted myself to the point of the photos above, and can't see the next steps. I know that the belly has to be yellow to balance the eye (amazing how that eye has thrown the whole model out of balance!) but I can't think what to do with the rest of the gun or the cloth. Everything I try on photoshop as a colour experiment doesn't seem to work - it just falls apart.

I'm starting to think that the rest of the gun barrel will have to be painted in a similar manner to the existing metal - probably with a darker base, say Tin Bitz, before highlighting up to boltgun metal and applying a red-brown wash. This would keep the gun tied together in one colour scheme, but provide some contrast between the parts. With the yellow belly and the brown-to-bleached-bone base painted - and steely-grey claws - then only the cloth will remain.

Eesh...I'm gonna have to try and do this from memory, as I didn't really plan it and didn't right it down. It just grew.

I started with two thin coats of Goblin Green, originally thinking that this would be the colour from which I'd build up the coat from. When that was done, however, I realised that it was WAY too bright, and if I highlighted up from there then it'd be just gaudy. So I applied two washes of a mix of Asurmen Blue and Chaos Black to get it much, much darker and pull it away slightly from being pure green. From there, I blended it up using Goblin Green, Ultramarines Blue and Chaos Black, gradually dropping the Ultramarines Blue until I'd blended up to Goblin Green again. Once I'd got there, I added a touch of Bleached Bone and added some highlights. A final, extreme(ish) highlight of 2:1 Goblin Green-Bleached Bone was applied round the face. To add a bit more depth and life to the skin, I did a coat that was a bizarre mix of Baal Red, Ultramarines Blue and Chaos Black, and I have no idea what the ratio was.

As I say, it just kinda grew in the painting.

A little further on...just the base, claws and the cloth to finish.

Well, I are finished. I'm not entirely happy with the result - from now on I'm going to plan out all of the colours before I even start to avoid this 'oh, but will that work against that?'.

i like the skin, but why didnt you also paint the quills above the feet?
