This came up in a tournament game recently: a group of Devilgaunts were camped on an objective, when my Grey Hunters assaulted them and left 1 fleeing. However, the game ended with the fleeing Devilgaunt within 3" of the objective. I checked the rulebook and FAQs and haven't been able to find anything to say whether falling back units can contest objectives or not. I was under the impression that they counted as destroyed when the game ends? And for the record, I lost the game because we couldn't find anything to say that they couldn't contest objectives.

At the end of the game, models falling back count as destroyed. You can't contest if your destroyed.

Damn, that's what I thought. Can you give me the page # just for reference?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Ok thanks. I'll remember this next time the situation comes up, and I'll have something to back me up other than "uh I believe that's not the case..."

Note that this is "for standard missions" and specials might not enforce it.

It's one of the basic mission rules. All units falling back at the end of the game are removed, just before victory conditions are determined.

Spetulhu is correct that it does say "In standard missions", but I've never encountered someone attempting to argue that it doesn't apply in special tournament missions.

Yeah, I was almost certain that this was the case, but didn't have anything to back me up on it. Plus no one else seemed to be able to back it up either. Sucks too, it probably cost me a spot in the Top 10 in the tournament.

Man, that stinks, almost had it come up in a game today, but luckily didn't so we didn't have to rule dive. Good to know, page 90.
