Earlier today I played 3 games at my local GW Store, The third, and last of which was supposed to be a 500pt game between my Thousand sons, and my opponent Steve's Orks. It ended up being a 505pts.

My Thousand Sons consisted of:

Daemon Prince
-wings

5 Thousand Sons
1 Aspiring Sorcerer
-Doombot
-Rhino
-Personal Icon

5 CSM

1 Obliterator

Steve's Orks Consisted of:

meganob
-Big shoota

3 Nobz
-Cyborks
-2 Rokkit Launchas
-Burna

4 or 5 Runt-herds?

50 Gretchin.

The Battle took place in the same valley as the previous two games, with a building in both deployment zones, and some barricades in between. Steve won the roll off, and deployed the meganob in the very back, the 3 nobz in front on him, and his mob of gretchin and their herders in the very front. I Deployed my rhino containing sons to the left of my building, flanked on the right by the detachment of CSM, and flanked on the left by the daemon prince. The obliterator was kept in reserve. I rolled to steal the initiative, and got it!

Thousand Sons Turn 1:

Hoping to funnel the mass of gretchin into a more manageable group, My entire force pushed hard to the left, with the Rhino deploying the Thousand sons on the hillside, the CSM behind a barricade and the daemon prince tucked behind a small building. Nothing had line of sight around the oppositions building.

Orks Turn 1:

The mob of gretchin was herded slowly around the building obstructing their view, with the nobz and meganob tailing them closely. Due to the mobs size the nobz and meganob could not draw line of sight to any of my force. They gretchin were out of range to fire.

Thousand Sons Turn 2:

The obliterater arrived from reserve, and was deployed farther down the hill from the Sons, not scattering due to the Icon. The daemon prince waited patiently while the rest of the force opened fire on the advancing mob. The obliterater fired a plasma cannon, taking a chunk of gretchin, and a herder out. The sons and marines also felled a chunk of the mob. (Sorry I don't recall exact numbers, I was pretty concerned about being trampled by a gretchin mob, not to mention the guys behind it!)

Orks Turn 2:

The mob closed within firing distance, and unleash a large salvo of shots. Only managing to drop 2 Marines. The nobz unleashed their rokkits upon the daemon prince, and he took a pair of wounds.

Thousand Sons Turn 3:

The daemon prince moved forward hoping to claim a meal but found himself just outside of assault range. The Obliterator marched forward, igniting his twin-linked flamer and burning a large chunk of the gretchin mob. The remaining CSM opened fire, and their bolts found their target in the Burna Nob. The thousand sons, opened fire with their bolters dropping several more gretchin. The sorcerer on the other hand rolled a on his psychic test for doombolt, and died to the perils of the warp. ouch.

Orks Turn 3:

The mob turned it's attention to the daemon prince now standing squarely in front of them, opening fire, but failing to harm him. They followed with a charge, and managed to trample the prince to death. (So far this guy doesn't have a very good track record, punched to death by a Kabalite Warrior, and now trampled by gretchin!) Rokkits from nobz proceeded to make short work of the obliterator and his flamer. A big shoota from the meganob was fired, but missed the thousand sons.

Thousand Sons turn 4:

The sons, without their sorcerer to lead them, rolled a 1 for slow and purposeful and backed up the hill slightly, they opened fire and dropped a pair of gretchin, The remaining CSM rapid-fired into the mob dropping a few more.

Orks Turn 4:

The few remaining gretchin and their herders fired upon the CSM, but did them no harm, following with an assault. The CSM fell, but not without taking 2 of the herders with them. The Nobz decided to loot my rhino, causing it to explode and wounding one of them. The meganob fired his big shoota at the sons, but could not hit them.

At this point I conceded to Steve, with only a few Sons left, without a sorcerer, I knew the mob would catch and end them quickly, and even if they managed to kill the mob, there were still two Nobs and a meganob waiting to break open some dust buckets. We had a great time at the store today, a lot of laughs between the antics that happened and the giant mob of gretchin. All three games were a big learning experience for me, and I hope to get back there and roll dice with these guys again. In hindsight, Thousand Sons are WAY too expensive for small points games like these, taking up most of my points. Against orks/gretchin/dark eldar they really fare no better than regular marines. Also in several spots I would have found an extra flamer or two very handy. Well anyway, let me know what you think guys, I welcome criticisms with open arms!

You keep using the term Meganob, but I'm assuming you mean a Warboss in Mega Armour. right? An interesting report. Haven't heard of anyone run a massive gretchin swarm in a while. Thanks for the interesting read.

Nobz can't take rokkit launchas or burnas. They can take kombi-rokkits and kombi-skorchas, but those can only be fired once per game. Was probably just an honest mistake.
