I was originally introduced to 40k through this game and I've always kind of wondered what size of army do you field, as a player, in dawn of war?
I haven't seen this topic in my skulking of the forums so I gotta wonder what points cost you get to play with in dawn of war?

Kain on Tzeentch:
The negative so far outweighs the positive that it creates a vicious cycle, with Chaos ensuring more bad things(TM) and largely only bad thigs happen. The fact that the major Xenos are mostly donkey-caves doesn't help, especially since the Imperiumis in turn, a bunch of donkey-caves.
Thus Tzeentch, god of donkey-caves, is the most generally successful. Because out of this huge pile of donkey-caves, none are more dickish than the great blue Jerk.

If you mean the video game, as opposed to the mission type, you don't really have a points value.

In 40K you start with a set points value of units, then lose them over the game.

DOW allows you to keep adding to your force as long as you can keep cranking them out.

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

in the video game there is a limit. Im using IG as a base as thats the army im familiar with..

in DoW 1 (all expansion included) in skirmish or whatever mode.
A full IG army with 2 Leman Russ, a Baneblade, 2 Basilisks, a chimera and tons of troops....
its a low end apoc army i personally say. like about...... mid 2000 lower 3000 points worth if it was on table top (this don't NOt include upgrade for troops like grenade launchers or plasma guns or what have you). This is just off the top of my head.

I imagine it would be similar to all armys in terms of points.

in Dawn of War 2 and all its expansions
The points value is Much lower. but its alos very strange. you can in theory have 4 or 5 Leman Russ tanks running around all at once. which is a good amount of points all together.
Each is upgraded with lascannon and sponson bolters, all being battle tanks. so its approxamatly.... over 1000 worth of points just right there. You can also have a few squads of troops a Baneblade and 2 Leman Russ as well.

My guess is that DoW2 games are approxamatly 1250 points plus or minus depending on the army. And this is using up every space of the 100 unit cap there is.
(unit cap is like points almost. each unit has X points and all total can't go over 100, tanks and things are more expensive while troops are cheaper obviously)

DOW1 has the larger scale battles and DOW 2 has the more tactical and smaller battles (even with Apoc units like the Baneblade included).

These are just extreamly rough estimates. take them as you will

In DoW 1 a full out space marine army would run you about 6000+ points on the tabletop.

Huh, that's a large-ish difference there, how much would the IG army cost maxed out?

A full DOW1 ork armies, using those awesome flash gits from the game, would come down do about 4000 points. Mostly due to things like getting powerklaws on all your nobz and in general flash gits though.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

This is beginning to strike me as odd ...
If the IG are at ~2,000 the orks are at ~4,000 and the SM are at ~6,000 I am very confused

Really it's down to unit cap, for some reason regular guard infantry take up the same pop cap as a tactical squad, and storm troopers/ogryn the same as a Termy squad. So we can have like 8 units of terminators on top of 10 dreadnoughts all with ridiculous upgrades that you would never take IRL, though there really weren't any upgrades on the Terminators.

True... maybe that's why were getting ridiculous discrepancies....
so what if we were to set up an army on DoW like we would an army on tabletop?

Then you would be playing Vassal.

For Orks, Space Marines and SoB, those armies would terrible suck in real 40k. Can't judge about the others, but it's probably similar.
Relic was more focused on creating a well-balanced RTS game based on the 40k background, rather than a real-time version of the 40k rules with all its flaws. In my oppinion, they did a good job at that, the game wasn't flawless, but very fun to play.

The game wasn't ment to rep the table top. All of the units in the game were either Rock, Paper, Scissors and were good at killing Rock, Paper, Scissors with upgrades to change what they were good at killing. Usually Infantry, Heavy Infantry, Vehicles/Building.

I need to return some video tapes.

If someone doesn't know, you can mod population cap in Dawn of War 2. I'm currently playing it at 1000 and it's loads of fun, before the mod I didnt like it tbh it was more like combat patrol than onlyl war

How could I look away?

A few pics to visualise gameplay with 999 population cap:

I've just taken the requisition point...

...the reaction is quick...

...and so is Emeror's finest run...

...to the nearest car park...

...power! Now since I have my landraider...

...nothing will stop me from reclaiming the point..

...uh...

...beaten by yellow Tyranids, what a shame...

... and the next wave means certain death to all and defeat. For the Emperor!
