Subject: Deploying overseas... need an Army to keep me entertained!

Hey all
I will be deploying overseas later this year (I have around two Months left at home). Now, I thought to myself 'hey - what a great opportunity to paint up and Army! Not only will I have little else to do in my down time but it will also give me focus and entertainment beyond watching a million and one movies!'
I plan on buying 1000 - 1500 pts worth of models. Building, converting and priming them before deploying, allowing me to focus on the painting whilst overseas.
What I am asking of anyone who wishes to contribute is ideas! I would love to hear your thoughts for a strong-themed Army of any kind (and what units, conversions, paint schemes, etc you would use)! It could be a spur of the moment thought, or something you have long wanted to see built yourself but never have the time.
When I eventually pick a theme (with help from you guys hopefully) I will go out and purchase all of the models and begin construction and conversion work (again, hopefully based on your ideas!).
I will also generate a blog on the site to keep picture updates of the progress (something that will be easy to maintain whilst deployed).
Any thoughts and ideas would be greatly appreciated! I look forward to seeing any creativity you guys can muster.
Thanks!
Tracer

I only managed to get a dreadnought done before he was "wrecked" near Karma. How about a nice Bike army? They're very simple, but you could spend a lot of time ensuring that the bikes follow the same theme and are done up to the same standard.
Some Iron Hands bikes, with lots of watch parts, perhaps?

Hey cool thanks guys. Great start.
Brometheus - nice idea with the bikes - definitely on to an idea there with the Iron Hands (I foresee a lot of 'mechanicum' / Steampunk style conversion ideas). Certainly a strong contender.
DAaddict - yeah I saw the new Codex today actually... Chaos always has so many theme ideas with the different ruinous powers. Maybe a zombie style army with lots of close combat cultists?

Well if you want to combine them, Nurgle bikers are very appealing. T6 bikes!!! And not too pricey.
Maybe Typhus, some zombies, Plague Marines and nurgle bikers. Then maybe a generic chaos lord on a bike...

Hey wicked idea DAaddict.... Nurgle does have lots of potential for conversion and easy modelling with green stuff. Plus is generally fun and easy to paint (well, it looks that way at least - lots of washes and you do not need to be very neat).
Bummer to hear that martin74. I hope I don't have the same problem

Hey fellow military member deployed currently. Id go with something that wont be easily broken while in transit lol. So a biker army would be great it seems as they seem to be pretty solid models and biker army seems awesome to do up. I'm actually working on Tau and an eldar army at the moment. But feel free to drop into this other thread. dedicated mostly to military members deployed. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/840/288363.page#4830611

Hey thanks for the link Alkaid - heading there now!
Biker Army is the first on my 'decision list' - Just played my first game of 6th Ed Dark Vengence (have not played the game since 3rd ed!) and loved the bikes!
Can't wait to see if anyone else will post their cool ideas.

There are actual zombies now, use Typhus as an HQ and you can transform your cultists into plague zombies.
No official WH40k models, but there's plenty of conversion possibility with either WHFB models or third party. It also has a high model count, so those 1000-1500 pts of zombies+other chaos stuff should last during your whole deployement.

Cool, cheers Bobthehero... great possibilities with the Vampire Counts.
Now I wonder... Nurgle Zombie Bikers? Perhaps the vehicles themselves are possessed and their desecrated corpse riders are merely pawns for father nurgle; lolling about atop the rider seat awaiting a target to come in range of their fiendish claws!

A Dark Eldar force led by Urien Rakarth, and spearheaded by two large grotesque units, wracks as troops and a couple of Talos is an amazing army to really stamp your own style on it with conversions and paint it basically whichever way you'd like. A friend of mine has a similar build and it looks amazing.
It also pushes in faces on the board

Cool idea Caranthir987,
I am not very familiar with the new Dark Elder range... I take it Uren Rakarth is some sort of 'mutant doctor' based on the units you recommend constructing the army out of?
I take it the theme would be mutated, flesh monsters - possibly made from the Dark Elder victims/prisoners? I could definitely see a cool theme here! Maybe mix the wracks with a few IG, SM or Elder kits as a 'throw back' to what the monsters were before being modified!
...unless I am completely off track of what you were suggesting...

I would not suggest dark eldar,or necron for a deploymentthingcway project as the models are very spindly and and offer a good chance to break. Marines. Orcs. Tau (if you magnetize suit guns) guard if youcut off bayonettes. Nidzilla. Sisters (they are metal)
Mainly as these are solid models with out a lot of skinny parts. You will also want to stay away from fine cast if your likely to be deployed during summer . I havewould seen thermeters read up to 130the in the sun at some locations

@ Tracer Actual - Urien Rakarth is the top DE Haemonculus, which is a deranged type of surgeon in the Frankenstein mould. Grotesques and Wracks are dark eldar that have been volunteered to be 'altered' by a Haemonculus, wheras Talos or Chronos are huge, altered flesh dreadnoughts. All these units get stronger with the more they kill. And yes, captured and surigically altered enemies of the dark eldar fit very well into modelling this type of army - you could have a space marine with his armour stripped off, with his arms replaced with that of an ork or a tyranid etc
@ Aleis - I agree with you in general about the DE range, as wyches, kabalites and the vehicles are very spindly and fragile models, but the grotestques and Talos are pretty sturdy, and it will be a relatively elite army, therefore small and easy to transport..

the problem is wyches and warriors are your troop choices and vehicles are key parts of any succesful DE army, either raiders, ravagers, or venoms

I imagine you are going to Afghanistan. Do you know if your postal service will be handled by your guys, or will the US be handling it? It may be cheaper to wait to make your purchases until you're there.
Make friends with some US guys, use their APO to ship things, that way you can pay US prices and shipping will be real cheap.

You could have a lot of fun converting tyranids and orks, i know since i've done it before
Orkz are so good for converting and painting, you can include your imagination and humor with them! I've build my own battlewagons, buggies, tanks and i just had so much fun making them
Tyranids are good for that too, i got tervigons converted from giant arachnarok spiders from fantasy, flying hive tyrant conversion, endless fun while trying to make them really unique
But i really want to make a new Imperial guard army that would have a lot of conversions! I've seen some awsome forgeworld models that would make great conversions... Was thinking of making an army that is stuck in some urban enviroment, heavy weapons teams that look like they are hiding in rubble, shooting with their heavy bolters with bipods leaned to some destroyed walls, kneeling models ducking behind rubble, painted like cadian forces but all dusty from the rubble and stuff... and have like an allied force of elysian drop pod troops with them that would act like paratroopers... Theese models gave me an idea about that
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Elysian_Drop_Troops/ELYSIAN-HEAVY-BOLTER-SQUAD.html
Yeah those kind of things occupy my mind when i want to chill out, googling models and similar armies to fit to my themed army that i would eventualy buy
Have fun !

When overseas on a military instalation its always APO. so US only handles it till the US borders, then its mliitary all the way. But for the most part they handle things pretty well. Just need some extra careful packagin. I've got a big box of eldar on its way from canada so we shall see how those end up when they get here.

He's Australian though, so it may be differant. I've never asked foreign forces how their mail was handled. I've only been deployed with a Spanish contingent, and they flew everything in for themselves.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah, I considered the option of ordering whilst over there but thought it might be easier just to take them over built and primed (leaving nothing but painting).
Tyranids and Elysian style drop troops could be on the cards. Maybe a mix of the two (Aliens style - just need a female with a lasgun/flamer combi weapons haha)
