Hello fellow Dakkanauts.

I've been posting images here and there, but nothing systematic, and yet I do a little bit of painting every night, more on days I do not work. So the first few posts will organize a retrospective of what I have done so far in 2013, and then I'll pick it up from there and see where I end up.

I've been painting since 2001, but real serious efforts have only started in 2006. I've been a dedicated W40K player until December 2012, when I discovered Infinity and then last week when a friend of mine bought some Malifaux pieces and I decided to take the plunge.

Here we go:
Some Infinity miniatures

Ah yes, I must say before I proceed, that I do not have a light box and take pictures when and where I can. You'll visit most of my apartment by the time you're through reading this, methinks.
Some Infinity terrain, in my gloriously retro-inspired kitchen, this is definitely a work in progress:

Some tests with two pharmacy-bought vehicles, testing for size. Although not very futuristic, I found the price too good to pass up.

Next up, something I just finished today. The friend that got me into Malifaux, he suffers from ATP. So as a Xmas gift, he gives me some models and I paint them for him. It's a win-win, really. I don't need to buy as much (but I still do!) and I get to go up against painted minis. We've had this arrangement going since the days of Confrontation 2.

Here are his Ortegas, a little shaky, but I was in a rush to go play, this afternoon:

Moving right along.

Here are the current projects: I've been finally painting the buildings I got from Burn In Designs. Excellent price/quality, to be honest. The doors and windows tend to be a bit on the bigger side, but aside from that, they look great. The impetus for finally painting them was my new-found love for Malifaux. I used basic Liquitex acrylics on buildings and set pieces, just because I do not believe in using 5$ paint pots the size of my pinky to paint things that are going to be stored in a box most of the time.

They come with a lot of signs so you can decide what you want to paint them as. Since I have 2 more coming in from Gamecraft with the Blackwater Gulch KS, the only thing I'd need for a 4' X 4' table at this point would be a few of the shacks from Sarissa and that would be it.

In front of them you can see the three gorgeous Guild Riflemen from Wyrd, and my WIP Judge and Exorcist.

I've been painting Eldars for a friend of mine who's getting into the game. He has put me in charge of finding an easy, simple colour scheme. He said he prefered pale blue steel for armour.

So here are my test shots, I'm waiting for him to decide. I much prefer the guardian on the left, but the one on the right requires no mixing of paints.

Hello everyone! Since the Dreamforge Games has ended, everyone has been waiting for a look at those gorgeous minis.

I painted some very quickly, got a few C&C (Thank you Azazelx, Pacific, Ski2060 and all others who commented.

First is the final look I settled on.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Now here is a shot of (almost) all the paint I use and the minis themselves.

Tamiya Dark Yellow, Red Brown and Khaki Drab. The first is the base coat (I bought the spray can) and the two others are the first layer of splotches on the armour.

Then I use dots of black (Americana) Lamp Black, and a little mix of White and Sand that is very much like Ushabti Bone, but thinner.

After that, black goes into the eye recess, and chest eagle area. The eyes then get a coat of Mephiston Red, the eagle Ulthuan Gray. The Eyes get a further layer of Khorne Red, as well as a thin wash of it under the eyes, on the snout part of the facemask.

Pouches and scabbard get a coat of the mixed colour, then a liberal amount of Agrax Earthshade. Then a highlight of the same colour, very thinned down, is applied on the upper edges.

Finally, a carefully applied line of Agrax Earthshade goes into the crack of the armour, the side angle of the helmet and the insides of the elbows and knees.

Exposed feet get a coat of Burnt Umber.

The weapon gets a bit of black in the recesses, then a coat of English Uniform (Vallejo) and Averland Sunset is carefully applied to keep the recesses dark. Once dry, the upper surface gets a very thin coat of the previous colour mixed with a bit of the "White-Sand mix."

The base is covered in Well-bond, then dunked in coffee grounds. It gets a quick brushing of Unbleached Titanium (Liquitex). Once that is dry, it gets another bit of Well-bond and dunking in grass flocking and fall leaves.

That's looking sweet. As a small bit of additional feedback for your troop's armour camo - try stippling the edges of the dark brown by poking the edges with a mostly-dry round, short-bristled brush. It'll give the blotches "feathered" edges.

I'll give that a go. I'll be sequestered (pun intended) at my fiancee's shop until friday, mostly, but I'll pick one up then.

And I also noticed the horrible mould line on the rebreather. That has been taken care of.

Some useful stuff:
http://migproductions.com/2010/11/washes-and-filters/

I've got the MIG oil wash as well as their rust washes and a couple of others (all need turps etc to clean brushes). Picked them up when I got a bunch of their weathering powders. I'm still a bit of a newb at using them, but they have a very realistic effect. I think they'd compliment the work you've done with the weathering powders really well.

I'll have to look into that. But as I said in another thread, the 1200$ upfront of class fees hurts the gaming budget quite a bit.

This slew of updates will be the last ones for a while, as I have to delve into 4 classes by the end of summer to be able to teach English by next September.

So here are the dudes with the black parts added.

You are the last thing before my queue dries up, man! I've got the package in my grubby little hands, it'll be assembled and primed by the end of today, painted over the next few weeks. I promise.

As for the size comparison: Space German is on a 30mm base, each square on the mat is 1/4 inch and the heavy weapon base at the back is 63mm, or 2 1/2 inches. Sorry if it is out of focus a slight bit.

Oh and before anyone says the rust is so-so. It's brick dust, as you can see from the little tub in the background.

Nice work. Where are you off to that you won't be painting anymore? Nice work on both the pin-up and the lighting as well.

(hint - put a link to this P&M in your sig - took me ages to find it again!)

Without being a dick, I've got a couple of suggestions to make the Levi look even better than it currently does. - Additional layering of paint/chipping, dust/grime and heat scoring.

Using some foam/sponge/etc, stipple on a bit more of the desert yellow basecoat over some of the paint scorch/chip sections - it'll make them a bit more subtle and more a part of the overall paint scheme.

More weathering around the feet - especially the bottoms and the sharp edges of the "shoes" around the edges - since this is the primary spot where the paintwork will be making contact with the ground, rocks, boulders, tanks, etc. Both bigger patches of weathering as you've already done elsewhere on the model, but also lots and lots of smaller dings and patches. Then after doing that, lots of dust/dirt/grime over the top. The SW powders you have there should do the job.

Look at this stuff to compliment and go over some of the paint scoring on the armour. Being Tamiya, it's pretty cheap and readily available from model train/tank/etc -type hobby stores.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viSWgVxxLI4
You can skip ahead to 8:12 - looks like it will work just as well for heat damage on paint as it does on vents and such...
