Counter Assault on Saios: Extra Battle – War for Weathell Hive

Welcome toanother battle of Counter Assault on Saios!
If you are interested in seeing the other battles that will shape the Petod system then go check out the master link list thread;
Counter Assault on Saios: The Search for the Elendil Thrakul

However, if you’re instead looking for an Apocalyptic battle as Black Templar, Immortal Host, and other Space Marine forces engage in battle for the fate of a Hive City with a Nurgle CSM army, Ork Allies, and a Dark Eldar raiding force then you are in the right place.

Now, we've been out of the Apocalypse groove for a while since I've been ut of town for almost six months, so we decided to do a nice rewarmup game to get us back in the groove (and important to do too - I can already let you know a lot of the polish I was used to doing doesn't show up this time, because I was sloppy in my picture taking. Totally my bad, I'll do better next time ).

The Opening Fluff
Spoiler:

As the Battle for Sancisto grew larger and more embroiled, many threads and elements were drawn to a razor-edged peak.

The forces of The Raven Guard had been perhaps the first to recognize the hidden agents working behind the scenes. They had battled them bravely without even understanding what they were up against. They were desperate to manage a proper evacuation of the remaining Imperial citizens however, and i is they who drew the original line in the sand over Weathell Hive, an otherwise strategically unimportant location. The Immortal Host, as usual, was the most outspoken against the Raven Guard's plan, noting it as a waste of resources at a vital time in the overall planetary assault. Likewise the Black Templar were against it as well, still holding something of a grudge against the Raven Guard for their failure to properly defend their supply lines during the Siege of Sigismund's Armored Fist, and still bearing great furor that the holy bastion lay in the hands of the hated Ork.

Still, both Space Marine Chapters did not fail to take note when suddenly almost all communication from the Raven Guard fell silent. What garbled messages could get out were fragmentary and often laced with phrases that did not seem proper on a military channel. Indeed, many of the reports simply repeated the phrase "...all we hear...is their laughter..." Finally The Raven Guard were able to reconnect proper communication and requested immediate emergency evacuation for their remaining forces and what civilians they had managed to protect.

There was something in Weathell Hive, they swore. Something not Ork nor Nurgle. Something that was cutting them down, trapping them, and trying to keep them isolated in the Hive City.

After some debate it was decided by the assembled war commanders that the Raven Guard forces could not be allowed to be destroyed due to the overall blow to troop morale. As such, a massive force of Black Templar Terminators, elite divisions of Immortal Host heavy armor and rapid insertion units, and additional supporting troop elements of the Verde Angelus Chapter (a minor successor Chapter of The Dark Angels that served with honor, if only minor distinction, in a number of the smaller battles of the war as well as having a support role during a few of the major engagements) were dispatched to bolster the defensive lines, extract the Raven Guard and the civilians, and then to lay waste to whatever threat lurked within Weathell Hive for once and all.

===================================================

Shadow Captain Bran Lachlann sat quietly in the Thunderhawk Transport as it lifted away from Weathell Hive.

"Guess we pulled you out just in time," noted one of the Imperial technicians as they began their rapid ascent away. From up here the blood soaked streets could not be seen, the panicked screams of the dying could not be heard, but, most blessed of all, the laughter could not be heard either. Bran reached out slowly, resting one armored han on the viewport plasteel as he watched the Hive begin to diminish below him.

"Did they take my advice? Will we be destroying the Hive City from orbit?"

"No sir," the technician pointed out the flare of other heavy landers descending with extra support elements. "We're reclaiming the hive, that's the better part of three full Astartes companies going in. They'll have the business sorted out soon enough, I reckon."

"...fools."

"Will you and your men be returning to the front after resupply?"

"No." Bran closed his eyes sadly. "We have done what we can for the civilian population, now it is a matter of helping to secure Iunden, the Forge World will be the next place they strike."

"I reckon those Chaos fellows will have their hands full for a while yet."

"Chaos? Oh...yes, they will likely be coming as well, when able."

Bran looked out of the viewport, Weahell was so far below him it was little more than a dark smudge on the surface of the planet now. But he still thought he could hear their laughter echoing through the darkness all around him.

They should have destroyed the whole wretched place from orbit.

Sending in more soldiers would just be what the wretched bastards would want...

The Setup
Spoiler:

The lay of the land from the Imperial side of the board.
The tallest building in the center, and the Shrine to the Aquila on the right side are their objectives.
The statue atop the hill and the big tree in the center area are the No Man's Land objectives.

The graveyard in the bottom left and the tallest building on the raised platform on the left side are the Chaos/DE objectives.

Yes, the building has a working clock on it - because it's important to know what time of the day it is in case you may need to be venerating the God Emperor.

The Verde Angelus Chapter takes up position on the Astartes' left flank. This quiet ruined temple and forest area would soon become a killing field...

The Orks muscle up center of the deployment line right behind the hill, flanked by their Chaos allies.

Black Templar Termies stand alongside Immortal Host heavy armor, ready to move forward to contest the hilltop objective, in what would soon become the second most deadly area of the battlefield.

The Secrets of the Tactics – revealed!
Spoiler:

Imperial Plan
The Imperials plan was relatively simple. They deployed a Disruption Beacon Stratagem to hopefull guard their rear lines, where their heavy armor gunline (though they dispute it as a gunline...that said, i know what an army of tanks with a Thunderfire cannon, Whirlwind, Rifleman, and Vindy is. They also work in some Terminators on the field to march up for the objectives, while a large portion of their forces remain in reserve in Drop Pods, ready to rain down atop the enemy objectives and claim them. The one-two hammer effect of strong defense and Terminators dropping from the sky offense hopes to break open the Nurgle/Ork/De army.

Their biggest concern is the strength of the Chaos alliance's air superiority - functionally 8 enemy flyers are out there via the Demon Princes, Void Ravens, et al.

Ork Plan
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

Chaos/DE Plan
We knew a Warhound was likely to arrive, and thus knew we would need to deal with that. The DE were given the task of providing anti-armor capability (via...let's see...how about we just spam lances/blasters like there's no tomorrow? Good plan!) The DE were also in charge of being the primary attack thrust of the army, out to claim the enemy objectives or to, at least, contest them. Meanwhile Chaos was tasked with holding the home field and also helping to shore up the mid field.

The Alliance had vast superiority in number of vehicles fielded, but drastically lacked the heavy armor situation the Imperials held. They would have to hit hard, fast, and often in the hopes of whittling down the Imperial heavy forces, or else they would likely be ground to dust beneath the big guns.

The Battle
Spoiler:

The battle begins with a number of Webway Portals springing into existence across the battlefield. The Imperial Forces suddenly understand that they are not a vastly numerically superior force about to crush a weak army of Orks and Chaos - they have instead blundered into a weak force of Orks and Chaos dealing with raiding Eldar pirates! The Dark Eldar happily turn upon the new arrivals, their primary goal being to keep the battle here going on, so that they may reap the pain and sorrow from the blasted city for as long as possible.

The Imperial right flank eyes the enemy air forces uneasily as the Heldrakes begin to try and immolate the Terminators...to little effect.

Descending from out of the stormy sky comes a Dark Eldar Splinter Raid Force, the sweep down directly in front of the Astartes' (gun)line.
They unleash a wave of firepower that kills a few Space Marines, damages a few vehicles, and destroys the Disruptor Beacon - allowing them to safely use their portals next turn.

A Lucius Pattern Drop Pod slams into the ground as an Ironclad Dreadnaught storms out to assault a surprised pair of Obliterators.

Another pod drops down right by the Battlewagon.

The Sternguard inside spring out, aided by waves of firepower from the nearby tanks and Termies the Battlewagon and 20 Orks are blasted to smithereens. The Dakkajet is also blasted from the sky.

The Nurgle Rhinos are also heavily punished.

The Imperial fast attack forces make themselves known amidst the shadows of the still looming Heldrakes.

The Ironclad and the Oblits would lock horns for a few rounds of combat, but the Chaos traitors would be ground to pulp before too long.

Seeking to protect the rear lines a squad of Dark Angel bikers encircle a Webway Portal, almost as though knowing this would prevent the Wyches inside from coming out.
Sustained fire from the Marine forces also destroy all three Venoms, though fail to slay all the Trueblasters.

More surprises from the Dark City, the first waves of a Dark Olympiad arrive, a huge Beastmaster squad sweeps out across the field, cutting through the trees to threaten the entire left flank.

Unable to assault out of the WWP (because that is way too powerful, as all DE armies have been abusing WWPs to win at tournaments all over the place with their overpowered and constantly fielded WWP based lists...) a squad of Wyches springs out amidst the Landspeeder parking lot and wave their hands in the air screaming 'we have Haywire grenades, boo!'
They then throw one and take off a single hull point.

Wyches skulk into the shrine of the Aquila.

The Reaver Jetbikes break away from the core DE forces, sweeping back behind the hill to bring further support to the flagging Chaos lines.

The Obliterators and plasma armed Chosen open fire on the Terminators, sawing apart the unit and causing massive casualties in the Black Templar lines.

The raiding Archon and her Incubi escort spring from their Raider and dart into the ruins, looking to remove the Space Marines there.

The DE presence on the Imperial doorstep is mighty indeed.

The killing intensifies in the assault, as the Incubi and Archon saw through the Marines like so much wheat.

Via a Librarian's psychic power (or, y'know, maybe because Chaos and DE via fluff really should not team up in my opinion... ) but a Burning Brand is dropped on the Reaver's heads.

As is a lot of firepower from the Sternguard.

This attack bike survive a decent amount of Chaos shooting, dodging it all with relative ease.

The Sternguard cut down some Reavers, but the squad holds, still eager to cause more pain.

A God Machine walks amongst us!
The Warhound Velox Venator aka 'Meisha' arrives. Its Inferno Guns already spurting flames.

So many targets, and so...well, many giant-ass flame templates.

Let's see, I'd like to flame blast two Raiders, a Trueborn Squad, *and* the Incubi...so let's just do that...twice.

Meisha's devastation is a bit blunted by invulnerable saves though. The Raiders walk off with only moderate damage, and though two Incubi go down, the Archon makes six saves in a row before finally being incinerated, her Shadowfield finally succumbing to the blasts.

The Baron considers his odds against weapons that ignore cover, and decides to go play in the other direction.
Far, far in the other direction...

The Imperial right flank is relatively clear of infantry, but their armor (gun)line still holds.
In the Chaos rear lines Belial has arrived, dropping in with a small army of Terminators, looking to destroy he weakened rear forces and secure the objectives.

Currently the Immortal Host looks to be winning the battle for the hill having slain the Demon Prince with the Brand and weakened the Reavers.
And Meisha and the Landspeeders still hold the line in their deployment zone.

More Dark Eldar forces arrive from reserve, a Void Raven drops a Void Bomb on Belial's unit, zapping three Terminators into oblivion.

More Chaos forces close in, sensing weakness.

The last Daemon Prince drops down amongst one of the Terminator squads, shredding apart the Black Templar s it roars in victory.

Two other Voidravens sweep onto the board, already targeting in on Meisha.

Under the sustained fire of the entire DE army and every lance weapon they can shuffle together, even a Warhound Titan knows defeat.

With a pained squeal of its voxcasters, the mighty Titan goes silent. The forces of the Imperium do not know fear, but now they do know concern.
There is no Apocalyptic explosion.
Bringing our total now to 5 Super Heavy deaths with no Apocalyptic Explosion.
WTF!?!

The Succubus and her unit of Bloodbrides have stormed one of the Astartes gunline buildings, and proceed to shred apart the Marine defenders.

Not the best assault ever, only one hull point taken off.
Derp!

The Beastmasters sweep back into the Sternguard lines, shredding apart a full squad of them in short order.

The Bloodbrides prepare to continue their ascent, killing everything floor by floor.

Some Plaguemarines deal with the Ironclad via a bit of melta, you can see how the hill has been basically swept clean due to continued firing sweeps of Sternguard and Predators.

The Sternguard start to move forward to support Belial.

Landspeeders and tanks try to take down the Dark Eldar assault to little effect

An Attack Bike sweeping in for a shot on the last Ravager, again, little effect.

===================================================

Unfortunately at that point the game was called for time.

The Verde Angelus were actually wiped off the board at this point save for a single Landspeeder with 1 Hull Point remaining.
The Black Templar had Belial and a Terminator left.
The Immortal Host had 2 Landspeeders, 2 Preds, the Whirlwind (or maybe the Vindy, I forget) an Attack Bike and also a large Sternguard squad led by Lysander and a Librarian, and the Rifleman and Techmarine.

Chaos still had one Heldrake, two Plague Marine Squads, an Obliterator squad, a heavily injured Demon Prince, and one Rhino, oddly enough.
The Dark Eldar still had one immobilized Ravager, the Incubi in a Raider, 3 Voidravens, 2 Wych squads, 1 Bloodbride squad w. Succubus, the Beastmasters, and an odd assortment of Raiders and Warriors.

As stood, no side held any objective. The Imperials were basically out of Troops (having one lone Termie as their sole Troop option) and though the Chaos/DE forces had Troops on three different objectives, the Imperials were contesting every last one.

Game Result - Draw!

The Ending Fluff
Spoiler:

The bulk of the Imperial assault force was forced to slowly withdraw in ordered retreat.
The Chaos and Ork forces had been cleansed from the ruins of the Hive City, and the Raven Guard and most of the civilians had been rescued.
The damage to the God Machine was repairable, but the loss of its presence on the front lines for the next month caused unneeded suffering and death amongst the Imperial ground forces.
The Dark Eldar seemed eager to claim the souls of the remaining civilians, and indeed of any Chaos, Ork, or Imperial forces they managed to find separated from their main hosts.
The Hive City was cleansed in fire via orbital bombardment as soon as the Imperial forces had withdrawn to minimum safe distance.
The threat of the Dark Eldar was declared over.
Civilian survivors still claimed they could hear the laughter.
They were declared excumminicado and tainted by xenos exposure and given terminal sanction.

The Ending Battle Review
Spoiler:

Imperium MVP

I would have to call it the Lysander/Termie/Sternguard squad. I mean, naturally, a squad like that *should* be good. But they did do quite a bit to help try to fight for the Imperial victory, managing to down a Demon Prince, kill off two Troop selections, and were remaining as the single most functional Imperial threat on the table by the end game.

Imperium WTF

That last attack bike. Yeah, it made saves, it made a *lot* of saves. It was up in the think of the battle constantly surviving dark lance fire, and Chaos attacks.
That said, even though it fired every single round of the battle with its multi-melta.
It missed every time too.
By rolling a 1...every time.
WTF?

Chaos MVP

I think I have to give this to the Void Ravens, they really helped swing the tide over to the Chaos side on their arrival. Firstly, the bomb toasting over half of Belial's squad was *huge* and really prevented that squad from claiming one of our home objectives. Also, their firepower was vital to the killing of the Warhound, one of them managing, via a single shot, to strip two Structure points and a Hull Point off of her all by itself.

Chaos WTF

I'm not sure if we had any really underperforming units (as usual, the army that is in the stronger position at the end of the game usually has less units derping it up than the other side, what a shock )
I suppose I'll go with the Ork Allied Detatchment as a whole - now, admittadly they got targeted by almost the entire enemy army, that said, still, a Warboss, his Battlewagon, his boyz, and his dakkajet all wiped out before they actually do...y'know...*anything at all*.
Kinda derping it up there, ladz.

It's awesome to see the big guns come out - thank you for sharing!

There's something so satisfying about seeing so many models on the field at once - and also being able to sweep up the casualties with a dustpan and brush (Blackadder-style)

The key problem with Apocalypse always seems to be time - I've rarely manage to finish a game as it's too big to be able to play in anyone's home and leave it set up overnight.

"But the armor (gun)line still holds."

I see what you did there.

To be fair, the Dakka jet did manage to kill a couple of TH/SS termies, including an HQ, and stripped 2 HP off of the las pred and stunned it. Not bad considering.

The war boss, shoota boys, and battle wagon though.... That was just horrible. They really wanted those guys dead.

Great batrep Thor, as always. Thanks for posting.

It was a lot of fun overall. I know I was personally thrilled to wrack up my 3rd Super Heavy kill (waaaay funner than the games where the Superheavy just sits around stomping a hole in your face )
Plus the terrain, the (almost) fully painted armies, and camaraderie really makes it way more fun than the usual casual games at the FLGS or the tournament scene (which, i admit, has become a bit dead for me with 6th)
I've become a bit of a junkie for Apocalypse now - I have trouble going back to small games!

I feel like our setup time was actually pretty quick - I think we did loose a bit of time in getting started - if you grok my delineation there.

We should really schedule up the Kill Team and final battle sometime soon. You're traveling for the next week or so though, right?

Having read a lot of his batreps I take that as the amazing compliment it is intended for. If you like the style I would also recommend Gordy2000's batreps, I consider him very similar to Aliaros in overal story, painting, and picture quality of his Batreps.
