Over on Tale of Painters I've been working on some tactical marines. These are the start of my 2nd company Ultramarines. I'm really happy with the retro result. I had to restrain myself and not paint the bases green.

This is my fav picture from the blog entry I posted.

It's striking how different the models have become.

The funny thing is, I like the uncluttered ones more!

Well done sir!

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

I like how you painted each in the styles of the eras they belong to. What's your technique for painting those blues so well?

I prefer the classic marine paint job to the newer ones - loving the yellow flamer for some reason...

1. Go to FLGS on a 40K game night.
2. Announce to no one in particular "I have over 10,000 points of Space Marines".
3. Sit back and watch as some 30-ish Neckbeard who still lives with his parents not only disputes your claim, but goes on to describe his 30,000 points of Blood Angels and how he has been playing since Rogue Trader days... And yet you will have never seen him either play 40K or that army.
4. From here, you have several options. Continue the conversation, or just end it. Either way, I guarantee you will waste 1+ hour of your life talking to this guy. Have fun!

There is something charming about the simplicity of the Ultramarine old school minis. Sometimes I think less is more. I would have had to gone with green bases though

Great work. Especially on the 2nd Edition minis, it's not easy making them look good

You may have painted the bases brown, but all I see is snot green! Excellent miniatures: well done.

Those Chosen are well done. The 2nd ed Marines however, are the real standout for me! The freehand is a great way to work some detail into these models, and your color palette is warm and inviting. I wish you did go all the way with the old-school basing and did them in Goblin Green, but I can understand why you went with a more modern basing scheme. Excellent work all around!

I have been following you over at Tale of Painters but man I just cannot get over the awesomeness you have here.

The chosen are just perfect in my mind... the colors and everything just work so well with the minis.

Yeah... those old skool marines are out of this world. You made some very static models look so unique.

I very much prefer the newer models, but you put forth a lot of effort to make those old marines look good. Bravo.

I'm with MW - we seem to be in the minority by preferring the Chosen, even if I did get a touch of nostalgia. But I just love that red job too much, and may have to borrow the idea for my own...

Damn, it's amazing how far Citadel miniatures have come...

Still, fantastic job on all of them! I love the vibrant blue on the Ultramarines and the reddish brass of the Chosen.

the more I look at stuff like this, and the fact that you made 2nd edition sculpts faces look better than any face I have ever painted, seriously makes me realize how much I need to go watch a tutorial and practice painting faces....

"You are like a son and together we have all but conquered the galaxy. Now the time has come for me to retire to Terra. My work as a soldier is done and now passes to you for I have great tasks to perform in my earthly sanctum. I name you Warmaster and from this day forth all of my armies and generals shall take orders from you as if the words came from mine own mouth. But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of thought and of action.

Thanks for the feedback. I love working on the blog. Be sure to buy this month's White Dwarf if you love Ultramarines. ALL of my Ultramarines are the army of the month showcase. I also took the photos for two pages of paint splatter myself with my own model.

Awesome work on both squads! I'm trying to put together a retro SM force, and those Ultramarines have me motivated!
