Playing the Odds is a probability program for Warhammer 40k created by me, which is meant to help you determine which models and squads will preform better against other squads.
This program works on Windows 7 and Windows 8, and may work on vista. It probably will not work on a mac unfortunately.
I am currently working on improving this program when I have time, and plan on finishing many of the improvements by late this year.
After you have downloaded the program, all you need to do is decompress the file, and then run the .exe file. The program will not require administrator rights, no installation is required, and no additional files are required.
The official version, as well as older versions are available at: http://bit.ly/17GsAMT.
Screenshots:
Main Menu
10 Spaces Marines should beat 5 Terminators at range
... but not in close combat
Current Features:
Pre-set stats for Space Marines (5th Edition), Tyranid, Necrons, and 'Testing Models' (which are basic stat lines such as a MEQ, or Marine Equivalent). Currently, squads will be created as if the game hasn't started yet (they will need to be at full models). These pre-set stats are encrypted and only include rules that are necessary. There will never be any point values in the pre-set stats. It will also only print out names of equipment, and will not print out any specific stats of a model.
Inputting your own custom squad. This squad can also be later saved so you will not need to re-enter the squad's stats.
Able to calculate how much one squad would deal damage to another (with or without retaliation) in both assault and shooting.
The user can now select which special rules they want the squad to have when the user is inputting a squad in a single menu, rather than enter 'y' or 'n' for each rule.
Upcoming Features:
Implementing most of the special rules that are available in warhammer 40k.
Adding the option to always cancel or go back within the program
Having a third option in addition to Shooting and Assaulting. This option will allow you to determine the odds of:
A leadership/psychic test failing
Failing a charge with or without fleet
More armies preset stats available, but I will not add an army until at least one month after the army's official release.
Add in option to save the combat output into a text file for graphing the damage a squad will deal, so it can be easily compared with another squad.
If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions please comment or email me at playingtheodds0@gmail.com.

Thanks Obox.
Any suggestions for the program?

Version 1.1 has just been released. The program will not come with preset images that can still be replaced. I am currently working on adding in selecting the special rules that an inputted model has by simply check-marking the rules, rather than need to enter y or n.

Version 1.2 has been released. It is a bug fix for 1.1, because the button for increasing the number that special weapons are given to a squad is not drawn.
Additionally, images will now be increased in size if the window is larger than the image is.
Also, I have removed the testing version. Instead, older versions of Playing the Odds that do not had any bugs will be available on the download link.

Version 1.3 has just been released.
The major change in this version is related to when the user inputs a squad. Rather than needing to enter 'y' or 'n', there will be a menu presented after all of the other stats have been inputted that will allow you to select which special rules you want each model to have.
Additionally, I allowed the user the option to select more general special rules when inputting a squad, primarily for their ranged and close combat weapons.

Any thoughts on a smart phone / tablet app? I'm finding myself less and less at my PC, yet more and more using my phone as a tool for wargaming.

I am planning on turning this into an app, hopefully for late December, but that may change depending on how many of my friends will help and how busy we are with school. I agree that I would greatly prefer to use this on my phone rather than on the PC, but for me it was easier to start developing for the PC.
When I do turn it into an app, I will release it first for Android because Apple's developer fee is unfortunately too high for me to currently afford ($99/year for iOS vs one time $25 for Android).

Yea could get a Centurion Squad for that price.....
I'll aim to release on Android by late this year, and depending on how successful it is on Android, and how interested people are in an app for ipod/phone/pad ill try and release for that a bit later.

Version 1.4 has just been released.
This version is mostly just bug fixes, but it is now always possible to give a squad a specific cover save.
I have also now uploaded a document which states the majority of the special rules that are not yet available. I'm hoping by late November to have substantially reduced the size of that list.
Added more background images, thanks to Nico Zweers from cgwallpapers.com!
There are still a massive number of improvements that I wish to do, such as improving how the program works with a different sized screens, and how the text can sometimes be difficult to see due to the background images.
If you have any suggestions, please comment on this post, or email me at playingtheodds0@gmail.com.

I must apologize to everyone who tried to use version 1.4, there were some bugs that I didn’t catch due to not having enough time to properly test the program. If anyone is interested in helping to find any bugs, please pm me or email me.
In other news, version 1.5 has been released, which is bug fixes from earlier versions. These improvements are in the equipment choosing menus and when changing a squad in the combat menu.

I took a break from working on this program during the Christmas break due to a lack of time, but now I'm going to continue to work on this program (until school takes over my life).
However, I have decided that it would be best to work on what my fellow Dakkaites are interested, so you can vote on what you want me to change here.
