Original Post

Hello all,

A couple of people seemed to appreciate my efforts and i struggle with the painting side of the hobby (love putting them together but never been pleased with painting results before) so I hope this might provide some motivation. Criticism and critique welcome, I want to improve my painting.

A little about me to put this in context. Full time job, a 2 year old and a newborn. This will not be updated particularly regularly, but I hope to provide pictures of what I do...

I am currently working on my Wolf Guard as shown below, I will try to post pics of the Rout so far soon.

I don't play the game, I would like to but have no time or anyone to play with, so weapons choices are made based on looks and what makes me happy rather than what is best or optimum for the game.

So, hope you see something you enjoy and i can keep motivated.

This is the first model I have fully painted after previous flirtations with Ultramarines and Orks as i practiced my highlighting. I am doing a lot of green stuff work on the models.

I want to highlight the yellow further but not quite sure how yet, it is drybrushed over a sepia wash but i am considering the Golden Yellow paint or adding some white to the Islyaden Yellow (or whatever its name is)

The base is The Fang, then a thick band of 50% fang and 50% russ grey around each piece of armour, then a smaller band of russ grey and lastly a fenrisian grey edge highlight (a method i have stolen from tutorials elsewhere and then skipped a stage, i don't claim anything new here, i like it as i am too shaky for GW style edge highlights and i just get frustrated)

Mostly, on my phone.

Very nice job! Having 2 small boys I entirely sympathise. The edge paint yellow is vg for such things.

cheers, you understand that the odd hour here and there is the best you can manage! I think the yellow needs a lot of work, i know yellow is considered a more difficult colour, i have just layered it onto the black here, i think next time i will build up through perhaps browns and orange... need to look at some tutorials for painting yellow. I also wonder if more of the model needs to be yellow, perhaps the wolf claw, he doesn't have a distinct knee pad to paint yellow. looking at it now it seems too blue to me.

I plan to use a slightly orange highlight for normal marine pads with a raised edge, doesn't work for Wolf Guard, they need a lighter or white highlight around the edge i think.

Cheers for the feedback mate.

Yes, for the sake of your mental health, do so. You must have noticed you got this weird blackish-blueish like color when you started layering yellow over black, and you probably had to layer it over and over again. Well, with a quick base of, for example, Mournfang Brown over black, you'll have no such problem.

Here's a fairly lengthy video where Yellow is discussed while he paints an IF Dread:

Excellent work so far btw, love his blue color, but I feel his helmet lenses should be a bit brighter to "pop". They seem a bit faded. Keep it up, good luck with your 2 cubs

Straight to my weakness with that! I put some orange on and it looked ok so I chickened out and left it at that, never found it easy getting consistent lenses done. Need to try and get some red in and brighten the orange. Thanks for the yellow advice I have never used yellows before this and it took at least five layers to look like this
