Surprised not to see this in here folks, nobody bothered with it?
I picked it up a few days ago and have probably cracked about ten hours on it. Personally, I think its really enjoyable, despite mixed reviews. There are a few "uh?" moments, but on the whole I think its the best tabletop 40k type of game I've ever played. It certainly beats Space Hulk.
The range of units is fantastic, and I don't really understand what the obsession with graphics is about. I still like the original X-COM, so needless to say I think the visuals are fine, and the voice acting and sound is spot on. Nobody picked it up?

I'll probably buy it sometime this week, meant to get it last week but the uproar from thanksgiving prevented it.

On the other hand, a lot of the reviews, positive and negative, are comparing it to the general series (panzer, fantay, etc). And I love those games! So it might be just right for me.
all in all not a great game, it has no explanation of how everything works (a couple line of text do not count) so your left guessing what does what, don't get me wrong it has lots to choose from, but doesn't feel like a modern game in the slightest.

Everything has a tooltip, click things to learn and it explains, oh and the manual as well.

Yeah, I think someone who enjoyed the Panzer General series (and similar strategy games) would feel right at home. A large part of the criticism probably stems from people expecting something more "flashy" because it's 40k, and even I as a veteran Civ player (all the way back to the very first iteration) have a hard time imagining this to meet my personal expectations for a title like this. I would be much more grateful for something along the lines of Final Liberation, which may perhaps not be quite as deep, but more than makes up for it with its animations. "Bringing 40k to life" instead of trying to imitate a static board game, if you will.
Also, why on Terra did they have to go for the Second War of Armageddon and not the Third?
May take a look if they release a demo. Until then ... well, the Steel Legion alone is not enough for me to justify this investment, given that I was never quite able to get into Panzer General, and the Space Marines as a faction have stopped doing anything for me about ten years ago.
But yeah, don't be fooled by the reviews, this is really just a matter of personal preferences.
Not the first time there's been a "40K General" game, either. Back when SSI was in charge of the series, there was one that had the player running an Eldar warhost for the campaign.
In any event, Steam has the game 25% off for today only. If you want to get it, now's the time.

That one even had SoB, too, though.
I kinda miss SSI. As far as I recall they were the publishers for Final Liberation, too.

Well, if this one does well enough, they'll probably be added.
Or someone will make a mod with them.
Final Liberation hinted that it would eventually have add-ons for the other races, though obviously nothing ever came of it. I wouldn't be surprised if Slitherine hopes to eventually do something similar here.

There is precious little about it on youtube either, so I made a (terrible) video so you lot can see how it works and I shall upload it forthwith. Just to show how it all works, because I like it a lot and I would hate to see a big fan of TBS and 40k miss out just because the graphics suck and the instruction manual is fething awful.
But I am with Soldarin, I have proper got into it.
Basically if you liked the first X-com, or even Advance Wars, I don't see how you can think its terrible. Maybe like a 6 or a 7 out of ten or something.. but a 1 or 2 like some of the guys in Metacritic? I guess they cant see past the old grpahics.
I would give it an 8/10, but I give it an extra point because its 40k.
The choice of units is excellent, and once you get used to the combat system it pretty much makes sense.
I played for about 3 hours solid last night, I think its really fun, although I turn off all the animations because that gak gets old.

There you go lads, I made a quick heads up for you.
Its the first video I have made, excuse the appalling production values (there are none) the poor sound, and my dulcit northern tones, but you can see how it all looks and plays.
I am a way though Act 2 now, its enjoyable, I dont understand why Dreds are so bad-ass compared to assault terminators. I figure there will be an option for thunderhammers, but I've yet to find the fether..

Yep, I actually inquired about that, being the pathetic little fan that I am.
Still, I'm wondering why they didn't just set it in the Third War of Armageddon right away. They wouldn't have had to open up all the factions straight away, after all, but it would have allowed for easier post-release implementation. Now, any more armies they may add are not actually compatible with the main game's campaigns.

Steel Panthers... *drool*
I also vaguely recall they had a cool turn-based air battle game where you'd command individual fighters and had to manoeuvre and outmanoeuvre the enemy using movement points etc. Looong time ago, but I remember I enjoyed that quite a bit.

As I mentioned above, it's on Steam Sale *today*. 25% off. It's scheduled to go off sale at the usual time tomorrow (i.e. 10am Pacific)
Even on sale, 30 dollars is just a little too much for me right now. It is sad. Well, no doubt a sale will come again.

I'd never heard of Final Liberation before, it looks like it was an interesting experiment at least. I wouldn't mind seeing something similar to that.
I'm curious, how much involvement do non space marines have in the game? I see the steel legion, of course, but are they majorly involved? Or is it just space marines most of the time?
How's the multiplayer? Can you play as the Orks in it or is it just Imperials vs Imperials?
I have an unhealthy obsession with Advanced wars (as in at least 300 hours on each, and got knows how many on AW 2 Black Hole rising as I'm on my 4th copy) so I could see myself really liking this game. It even has my two favorite armies in it, Orks and IG

Aye thats why I took the time to mention Advance Wars, I loved that game and I spent about 200 hours on it when I was stuck in Ganners and had feth all all else to play.
If you like turn based strategy its bang on. There are a few "why the fhe feth did my artillery unit just explode" moments, but its entertaining and enjoyable and I heartily recommend it

Sorry for the half reply Moustaffa I was drinking heavily yesterday.
Yeah you can play as the Orks in multiplayer and play around with a similarly huge range of units, nobs, walkers, artillery etc etc..
There are also loads of different skirmish scenarios to play through as well.

Nice, I'll be keeping an eye on it during the winter sale then.

Why do you say that? I know the IG graphics are pretty lame, but it is fine and playable all the same. I still install UFO and X-com Apocalypse every few years for a game, TBS strategy needs nothing more than an addictive set of rules, and this most definitely has that.
I will say that I think it tapers off slightly as it goes on, the campaign is really great because its longer than I imagined, but I think I am about 20 missions in and it is losing its luster due to balance issues, namely, Titans.
Once you get enough cash to buy one, things get easier, and then a few campaigns later you get another one, and once you are up to 4 and a few Space Marine squads (assault centurions and Sanguinary guard!) it goes from a slog, to something of a steamroller.
The thing that I do find weird is, (as you can see in the vid) you are not hamstrung by unit type or cost, but amount of units, and I don't understand why as my gakky guard infantry die, I can just buy Titans and Space Marine elites to replace them. Its still fun, but its getting easier now, and ai guess after a few more missions I will have replaced all my original guard with fething.. supersized killers of extreme repute and Titan war machines.
For that reason I think liked the first half more than the last half, but Im not done yet.

the manual is barely useful at best, awful at worst and the tooltips offer a brief line of text and again not very helpful, the percentages etc. don't match up properly (from what ive experienced so far), and after all that it still doesn't feel like a modern game, where are the movement animations, why do only a couple of guns fire or a single gun fire, I wasn't expecting dawn of war but I was expecting something better than a 15+ year old game engine (ok variation of an old engine)
