---Full Table Concept---
Spoiler:

I've been fascinated lately with the machanicum, specifically a forge world, and super specifically based on that picture. The table is a comprised of 6 tiles, each 2'x2', which if you lay out in your mind (I'll add a picture later I promise) from left to right 2 tiles high, 3 wide, the left two most tiles will be entirely int he manufactorum, with assembly lines and such. The middle two are the wall and gate of the manufactorum, with the main bridges having molten metal flowing from a warlord titan head and the bridges held up by two reaver power fists. The wall section has a gunnery port open out of which an ordinatus has killed an advancing reaver titan. The right two tiles are on the surface of mars, rust red soil and all. The top tile is the destroyed titan from the previous tile, and the bottom tile is a pile of dead dark mechanicum forces and tanks, the overrun first defense point for the manufactorum gate. Mostly it's going to be a campaign and diorama board, not really intended for competitive play.

---5/9/16---
Turns out, after going through many armies, in order Tau, GK, IG (Krieg), SM, Necrons, and Eldar, I finally found my niche, AdMech. So, now that I have the army, it's time for the table, and I love the idea of the great schism. Like all good projects, we have to start somewhere, and I decided to start simple: a tile with the remains of a destroyed Chaos Reaver Titan and the Mechanicus starting to excavate to salvage it.

If you want the story for this tile, here it is, feel free to skip if you only are interested in process:
Spoiler:

One tile over is the wall for the manufactorum the table is centered around. The Dark Mechanicum, being the crafty sods they are, had awoken a Reaver withe chaos fueled machine code, and it came stomping toward the manufactorum. So what did the AdMech do? Why open up a large door in the wall, park an ordinatus at it and crotch shot the Titan. Down it went, sheered off at the pelvis, with the main torso twisting and falling backward. Sadly, the reactor went critical leaving a gaping tear in the martian soil, the scattered pieces of the tile cooling around it.

So, to start out I knew it would be a standard 2'x2' tile. I used wood glue to attach one section of pink foam to a wood board. Then, height was a question. I wanted a lot of verticality, because you rarely see it in board, especially negative verticality, digging into the earth itself. I also knew I would need depth because I have plans for a canal of molten steel in a couple of other tiles.

Anyway, it was time for layout, which looks something like this:

On the top right we have where the legs will be stationed, with the Reaver originally facing right. The head also snapped off, rolling and landing to the right of the titan, the lower right of the tile. The powerfist and arm cracked on landing, settling in the lower left section of the board. The shoulder pads became embedded in the walls of the crater, one of which you can see mocked in place upright. The main torso section will be open like you see, to allow models to enter, and slante dupward like a pseudo ramp. Finally in the top left we have the deepest portion of the crater, the reactor. It cracked off and went critical, the back housing focusing the blast forward like a shotgun.

We went through and cut 6 tiles total, each 1" thick, using the template laid forth from this mock up. You can see the depth markers (in tiles) in the sharpy outlines. Since I'm uber prepared the pink foam ended being cut using a cheap old soldering iron. Right tools for the right job, right?

I forgot to take a final picture, but at the end of day one all the foam is clamped together, glue drying. I have the legs built (unseen) and need to crack off the hip portions, for which I'll use a scroll saw. I also have the head and reactor built, the reactor needing to be modified with destruction to the housing. I've also finished making the head. Still to go is the torso open area, adding the shoulder brackets to it and greebling the inside, and the powerfist.

If you can replicate even a fraction of that picture it will be amazing. I love lava but most boards that utilize it are so flat and barren.

Interested to see how this turns out.

Love your ambition! It's refreshing to see a board which, like you said, has vertical elements to it. Can't wait to see this shape up

Ok, so the titan is almost done with construction. The powerfist is waiting on a hand drill to arrive so I can add wires and such out the back, same with the head.
The torso mid I need to get some cabling for the walls and finish up destroying the shoulder mounts, then those will be done too.
The shoulder pads are completely done and ready for painting.
The reactor hasn't had any destruction at all added to it, but it is glued together at least.
The legs are 90% there, still some work to do on where they snapped I think.
The tile itself I still have to clean up and smooth out some of the level transitions, but at least you can see what the layout will look like, minus all the excavation bits.
I'm hoping to get to priming and painting the titan parts in the next couple of days so I can start embedding them in the terrain, but first I have to coat the foam.

The madness is part of what makes the tile great. Show up with a tile of wreckage and the reaction you get is "nice tile". Make that wreckage an actual titan and you get a whole other level of looks. It's not about the money, it's about sending a message... to the Best Painting judges...

You can actually field it every game if you want!

But seeing that shattered wreck of a model makes me want to say: "BBBBBut! It IS a Titan... in pieces... intentionally! I feel.... trolled on a whole new level. I would need 3 of them before I could attempt this.".

To make you feel better, I have two Reavers and a Warlord. So there you go, 3 Titans to make you feel better.
