Off the shoulder of Orion

Welcome to game 6 in our ongoing campaign. This time a double-header with a Battlefleet Gothic report and a Zone Mortalis boarding action for a little variety.

As always, the previous games can be found here:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Gordy2000%27s_Battle_Reports

In the latest battles, the promethium mines of Triskelion II have been seized by the forces of Chaos (destroying the remains of a loyalist astartes chapter in the process). Filling a convoy with the precious fuel, along with a multitude of reinforcements for the ongoing insurgency, the Chaos fleet makes for the core world of Triskelion V.

But in-system, the Imperial Sector Fleet lies in wait, determined to stop the transport convoy and gain void-supremacy over the heretics.

As this is a 40K forum, I’ve spoilered the BFG battle below – but here’s a taste to whet your appetite:

Battlefleet Gothic Battle report (all painted with full terrain, as always) Enjoy!

Spoiler:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Exulted Captain Dar Aral surveyed the transport fleet from the bridge of his heavy cruiser Bloodied Sword. He ground his steel teeth together in frustration at the slow speed of the transports. His force of cruisers was shackled to the wallowing tankers and troop ships, stripped of their ability to hunt for the hated Imperials.

A burble of scrapcode from a nearby servitor caused him to turn in his command throne.

“Surveyors report!” he barked to the overseer in charge of the scanning node.

“My lord hissed the mutant responsible for the twisted machine-things sweeping the void in front of his fleet with their warp-sense “Contacts from the sunward quarter – signatures showing Imperial cruisers and escorts”
Dar Aral snarled – they had been caught flat footed, just as he had feared

“All ships to flank speed – cruisers to engage enemy ships and keep them off the convoy. Prime all batteries and move to intercept” he barked.

He rose from his command throne, power armour creaking as its huge weight settled on the deck. A bleak smile creased his scarred face.
“Those Imperial dogs are in for a surprise if they thought this convoy was an easy kill….”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Cruiser Souless flanks the slower convoy transports

The Deathblade and Iron Fist rove out in front of the fleet

Sensor Contacts! The Zealous moves in at full burn, flight decks open to the void

She is joined by her sistership, Justicar and escorts

And coming in at an oblique angle to the Chaos line, the cruisers Uziel and Vigilant

The Chaos fleet is spread out, with the Bloodied Sword some way back from the engagement sphere

The Iron Fist is hit hard by Uziel, Vigilant and their escort squadron. Her hull is breached and fires break out. First blood to the Imperial Fleet!

Most of Iron Fist’s escorted are turned into debris clouds and torpedo hits do more damage. Worse still, waves of bombers strike out from the Zealous

Pulling away from the cruisers, the Iron Fist moves in close to the Zealous and rakes her with fire

Chaos escorts engage the destroyer screen in front of the Vigilant. Combined Imperial firepower makes short work of the Chaos ships.

The Bloodied Sword and her prodigious weapons batteries draws near to the engagement sphere…

The Iron Fist takes more punishment from the Zealous and is now seriously damaged

The Bloody Sword reaches weapons range and engages the Vigilant, stripping away most of her escorts in a storm of fire.

Iron Fist and Deathblade bracket the Zealous, hammering the carrier with fire

At the far reach of scanner range, a new force jumps in-system. The indomitable Salamanders have arrived – but will they reach weapons range in time?

The Justicar cuts across the flank of the convoy, striking out at enemy cruisers and damaging a transport

The engagement devolves into a close-range brawl

Imperial counter fire strikes the Chaos fleet – but is it enough to tip the balance?

A brutal volley of fire from the Bloodied Sword smashes into the Vigilant. She is lost with all hands

The Zealous ploughs through heavy fire, intent on breaking up the convoy

The Bloodied Sword turns her guns on the Uziel, doing heavy damage

The Salamanders close in, but are still outside effective weapons range

The Chaos cruisers continue to harry the Zealous

The Justicar tries to cut across the Chaos gunline – and is turned into a blazing plasma ball by the combined Chaos fleet!

Revenge is swift for the Imperials, with the limping Iron Fist and Souless joining the Justicar in death

The Bloodied Sword however, is unstoppable. The Uziel is blotted out of the void

The Salamaders take some desultory fire form the Chaos fleet, but continue on at full burn

A Battlebarge leads the way, but the astartes are too late. The Imperial system fleet is in ruins and the remaining Chaos cruisers, along with the convoy, move away at maximum burn.

Chaos Victory!

+++Triskelion Monitoring Station PZR-186+++
+++Triskelion Sub-Sector+++
+++To Cadian Gate Sector Fleet Command+++
+++Priority Magenta+++

A renegade convoy accompanied by a powerful Chaos escort (4 capitol-class vessels, multiple escort-class destroyers) was intercepted by our glorious fleet (4 capitol ships + destroyer escort squadrons) at 0715 sidereal on the sunward side of the Triskelion system.

The Chaos Heavy Cruiser ‘Bloodied Sword’ was positively identified amongst the enemy line. Despite the presence of so fell a vessel, the Triskelion subsector fleet managed to ambush the servants of the Ruinous Powers. The engagement lasted several hours during which I regret to inform your worships that the Imperial cruisers Uziel, Vigilant and Justicar were lost, along with all escort squadrons. The Zealous was critically damaged and will require months in dock to effect repairs.

I am however honoured to report the confirmed destruction of the reviled traitor cruisers Iron Fist and Soulless by our brave ships. Both Chaos vessels have been purged from the galaxy, along with all Chaos escorts and one transport. Furthermore, I can report that a transporter carrying several megatons of crude promethium was also captured by imperial forces.

The Chaos cruiser Deathblade and Heavy Cruiser Bloodied Sword remain at large and reportedly wholly intact. The traitor capital ships disengaged from the action with the unannounced arrival of a powerful Adeptus Astartes strike force, which was last reported hunting the Chaos ships near the system edge. It is believed the bulk of the renegade convoy has reached the Triskelion inner planets, whereupon contact was lost.

I beg your worships to dispatch additional capitol-class ships to the Triskelion sub-sector with haste. The Astartes ships are some distance from the inner planets in pursuit of the Chaos Heavy Cruiser (which is still at large) and with our own sector fleet effectively destroyed, the main system worlds are dangerously exposed.

Your obedient servant,

Monitoring Adept Class One Domus
The Emperor Protects

So, our first game of BFG done – what fun it was. Really liked the mechanics and Sandy’s ships look fantastic. So, the convoy got through and the Imperials got quite the bloody nose. The Bloodied sword was a beast in close, putting out some serious firepower. I can see more void engagements in the future…

So, with that battle resolved, on to the boarding action!

A trailing Chaos transport ship has been intercepted by the newly arrived Salamander force. A strike cruiser has launched boarding torpedoes, which now bear down on the lumbering transporter and its precious cargo….

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The two torpedoes arrowed across the glittering dark as they closed with their target. The machine spirits inside made last second adjustments as they entered the terminal phase of their flight. With seconds to spare the torpedoes made a series of manoeuvres to avoid the fire of point defence turrets and lock on to the designated entry points – either side of the main engineering space of the vessels main warp drive.

With a scream of tearing metal, the torpedoes slammed into the Chaos transport, burrowing through its armored hide and delivering the Angels of Death into its black heart….

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The interior of the Chaos transports engineering space

The Primary Target – the warp cogitators. If these are destroyed, the ship cannot jump into the warp and will be captured

Chaos crewmen man their positions as bulkhead doors slam shut and the ship goes to general quarters

Impact one! Salamander vanguard and tactical marines deploy from their torpedo

Impact two! The Command Squad and Sternguard squad deploy

The crew prepare to repel boarders….

Move out. No prisoners.

The first compartment is cleansed by bolter fire

One lone renegade remains – and he is unbowed!
Come at me!

Renegades move up to contain the astartes breachers

Flamer and bolter fire thins out their numbers

Forwards!

The Chaos marine force guarding the ship arrive in the engineering section

The unmoved renegade crewman is diced into small pieces by the Sternguard

The Salamanders move forwards, clearing the ship room by room

The crew desperately redeploy as the target of the raid becomes apparent

The marines prepare to assault a heavily held choke point

Breach!

The Vanguard veterans get to work

...and are counter assaulted by the dregs of the crew

The Vanguard hack…

…and hack their way through

Section clear – push forwards!

On the far side of the engineering space, the Sternguard prepare to assault the Chaos marines

Two of the veterans are slain by plasma fire

Enraged, the Salamanders slam into the Chaos astartes

Brother vs. brother, no quarter….

Disaster! The Salamander Captain is laid low by the Chaos champion

Melee!

Meanwhile, the first team breaks into the cogitator room

Spread out! Clear the room!

The second team fells the last chaos marine

The vanguard put the defenders to the sword

Destroy the cogitator banks!

Mission accomplished! The two boarding teams link up as the cogitator banks are destroyed. The ship is captured!

Victory Imperium
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That was a cool game to play. Very canon – elite marines hacking their way through teeming defenders to secure the objective. The vanguard in particular were awesome, in one combat chopping up 19 renegades for only one loss.

Were still tweaking our house rules for zone mortalis games, but they seem to work pretty well. Sandy kept his forces tight and the armoured wedge approach worked a treat. The Chaos marines held them for a couple of turns, but that was all.

Next game, back to the core world of Triskelion V. Newly reinforced, the Lost and the Damned go on the offensive in the capitol hive.

Like urban battles with a couple of hundred infantry slugging it out? Stay tuned…
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

“Fleet commander Aral confirmed one bulk transporter captured by the imperial fleet lord”

The report echoed around the darkened bridge of the mighty battleship. The command crew held their breath as they awaited a response to the bad news from the hulking figure on the command dais.

“No matter” rumbled Baalor the Horned. He turned slightly to watch the icons representing the fleets in-system as they sped towards the oort cloud.

“The imperials have taken the bait and the core world is now left undefended. The promethium supplies and troops are now on the ground and preparing for a full scale assault within the main hive.”

The Chaos warlord swept his burning gaze across the cowering bridge crew.

“All goes as planned…”

Thanks for the comment guys - always appreciated.

The corridors? Just printed some spaceship interior templates I found online and glued them to foamcore. Rough and ready but it does the job (and is easy to carry/store)

Beautiful stuff. I think we need to get ourselves some BFG models so we can also play space battles in our campaigns.

I too say "Wow"! I like the terrain, though the area used seemed a little small for the number of models involved.

Awesome job - love the BFG too!
