Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

LVGT Day #2

I was very happy with my performance on day one even with a tie, I thought that if I had a good day 2, I was in striking distance. After a hard night out on the town, I looked over the 2 missions, and thought that they really favored me. Cleanse and Recon. With a lot of fast moving scoring units, I thought I was in good shape.

Part 4 of my 5 part series; LVGT Game #4
After my massacre in game 3 on table #18 I was headed all the way down to table #6.

I looked across the board and there was Charlie Nichols. Charlie is a very good player, and to show that he is good, he is the last Adepticon Iron Man winner. I have played him a couple of times before, and I have never beaten him. All I will say is that he is very good with an invulnerable save. I was out with him and a bunch of other SCGWL guys the night before, and I knew that we would end up facing each other sooner or later because Charlie, Darrian, Jason (Who eventually took 2nd place) and I were all hanging around the top tables.

On to the game:

Charlie’s Word Bearers (From Memory)
Demon Prince
Stature
Essence
Cursed Crousious
Spiky Bits
MoCU
+Other nastiness

2 Obliterators

9 Infiltrating Marines
Aspiring Champion w/Powerfist, D. Mutation
2 Melta Guns
MoCU

9 Marines in a Rhino
Aspiring Champion w/Powerfist, D. Mutation
2 Plasma Guns
MoCU

14 Plague Bearers

8 Bloodletters

10 Furies

Dreadnought
TL Autocannon
Missile Launcher

8 Havocs w/4 Autocannons, Tank Hunters

Mission: Cleanse

The funny thing is that Charlie and I fought on this table 2 days before in the Team Tournament, and we ended up getting a draw, so the familiarity with the table helped a bit.

I chosed the table quarters, and I chose the one with the most cover, while having the best fields of fire. He set up his dreadnought first behind some woods, and because I have Eldrad, I put a falcon as close as possible to the table center to push him back.

He did not have a good place to put his infiltrators, so he ended up placing them behind a rock pile on the top left.

I won the dice roll to go first, and deferred to him

The Setup

Turn #1

He moved forward and his rhino pops smoke.

I mount up into the Falcons (the falcon with the scorpions is out of frame to the right). You can see his Autocannon Havocs in the crater to the top left, and I am very careful not to get a falcon in range and LOS of them. My turn I shoot the crap out of his rhino, and it lives.

Turn #2

On his turn he gets both the Bloodletters and the Furies. He summons both squads from the infiltrators. The bloodletters scatter back, and the Furies hit on target. The Furies fly forward, and engage my guardians, and his Rhino moves up and disembarks.

I throw everything at the Furies, and I end up killing them. The back falcon kills his rhino, and the other Falcon puts 3 wounds on his Lord. I move a chewed up Guardian Squad forward to take the charge of the DP. I tried to spread out so that he had no where to land, and that he could not get into the heart of my army.

Turn #3

The most important part of this turn you can't see. If you can see on the very top picture, there is a hill near where his Havocs are. I knew I needed to take them out if I had any hope of claiming his table quarter. So I flew my Falcon right up beside the hill, to not only shoot at the Demon Prince, but to get the Harlequins in assault range of the Havocs. But Charlie is a very good player, and he sensed the danger that the Havocs were in, and moved them back so I could not reach them.

He assaulted my Guardians with his DP, and wiped them out, and he then rolled 6" to move into my Dark Reapers. His oblits come on and stunned my Falcon.

(Ignore the plague bearers, they came on just before I took the picture)

I move my Falcons back to re-group, and I assault his Demon Prince with my Avatar, and the Avatar kills him. My Dire Avengers shoot the infiltrating squad, and with the torrent of fire rules, I was able to kill the standard bearer.

Turn #4

I forgot to take the picture at the top of turn 4, but he knows that he can't reach me any longer, and starts to pull back.

He still has a lot of scoring units, and time is getting short. My Dark Reapers shoot at his Bloodletters, but they can see only 3, killing them. I disembark my Harlequins to assault his rhino squad, brining them below half. My Falcon flies up the hill to try and kill the oblits, but can only kill one of them. (This is where I screwed up. I should have jumped the Harlies over the rhino with a hit and run, so that if he wanted to try to kill them, the Dark Reapers would mow them down, but I didn't).

Turn #5

I thought my falcon was about 48" away from his Autocannon Havocs, but I was not sure. As you can see, my Falcon was within 48". He piles on his Plaugebearers into the assault with the Harlies, and takes them out.

My scorpions get out of the Falcon, and shoot at the Bloodletters killing 2. I try to assault them, but I am out of range. My avatar hits the marine squad killing a few, and I start to fan out to hold table quarters. Here is also where he made a mistake...there is a gap between the hill and the rhino, and my Dark Reapers start to kill the Plaugebearers.

Turn #6

His Dreadnought bloodrages and charges forward. He shoots his oblit with a heavy bolter at the guardian squad at the bottom of the table making them run off. His plaguebearers assault the Avatar killing him, then hide from the Dark Reapers. He assaults my scorpions with his Bloodletters and we both kill 2.

My scorpions kill the last Bloodletter, and then I shoot everything I have at the last oblit. Eldrad Dooms him, and he mind wars him twice doing nothing, I shoot my Falcon at him and miss, and I needed him to die! So who can we turn to at out darkest hour? Dire Avengers! I bladestorm him and do about 10 wounds and he fails 2 and dies.

So at the end of the game his dreadnought is right in between 2 table quarters, and he rolls, and he ends up in the table quarter with the scorpions and guardians....Rats!

But I do end up with one table corner with my falcon, and that is enough bonus points to give me a major victory!

I gave Charlie max points because it was a hell of a game, and I finally got the monkey off my back with never beating him!

On to the last game...Table #2 vs. Dark Eldar!

How on earth did Dark Eldar make it to table 2!?

Seriously though, nicely written reports so far. I've enjoyed the reading and especially the pictures, I can't wait to see game 5! Keep up the good work!

Nice report! Sometimes confusing due to all the stuff rubbling around (increases while the game continues, that adds a certain "hard-and-sweaty" game flavor, though, no time to tidy up that table... )

Beautiful Eldar Army, can I find some pics of them anywhere?

Favorite batrep so far. Thanks for the time and effort to do this, been enjoying it.

How on earth did Dark Eldar make it to table 2!?

I dunno where you are from, but dark eldar have a pretty solid record at american GTs. It may be because only vets play them in tournies or becuase DE shred MEqs but they do very well, placing in the top 10 more often then not (and winning the whole thing several times).

Iorek: "Snoogums, you're right. Your arguments are irrelevant, and they sure as heck aren't going away."

DE requrie only 2 things:
1) Adequate cover; and
2) The first turn.

Given that, they will shred quite a few of the "power" armies. Denied that, and they often lose.

A sad moment in my 40k career: my mech guard vs. a DE Raider force on a nearly barren tourney table. My usual "roll to see who wins" remark fell flat; I won, and every Raider in his army died horribly.

Which is why WWP is all the rage for most DE players (although wych raider rush still seems viable). But I digress.
