Lemartes: Good job on the Grey Kinghts placing for the Baltimore trip. You are without question, one of the best players I know in this game. Endzone runs a pretty good tournament, no doubt about it, and I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures they took of Tim's and mine Necron armies doing the rugby scrum for the golden ticket . Drop back down this way when you get a chance for some tournaments here, bro.

Thanks for the compliments. Tough first round draw for you. I would think with all the players thier you would have had anyone else but a mirror match. My second round draw was dubious at best and it kind of had me bent for a while but I will get over it. I really wanted a crack at that MC list at the top table. Baltimore may be possible depending on if a good friend of mine can get discounted flight tickets other wise I can't see spending that much cash.

That was actually my favorite match of the tournament, and we were both laughing about the fact that after it was over,  there were only 15 dead Necrons total for both sides.  It was kind of like a 3 Stooges movie where they keep getting knocked down and jumping back up again.  The only reason I won that match was the fact that I got first turn and had a chance to completely surround the ticket  by turn two and turn the whole thing into a Necron slug fest, neutralizing any shooting he would have gotten on me.
You came back from that in a big way, though, to grab third.  I've always said almost anyone can do well in a tournament with Eldar or Bugs, but to place with what many consider a way lower tier army takes real skill.
It seemed like most of he crew there was pretty good fer sure, and not a one among the 30+ gamers present  smelled like an over sized wet corn chip! Just to witness that unprecedented  event was alone worth the travel time to get to the tournament.

1st) Me (marines) 72 battle points
2nd) Chris Merhstedt (Marines)
3rd) Tyler Cooley (chaos)

1st round I faced a 72 fire warrior, 3 hammerhead, crisis suit/stealth suit list and they were all fearless. 2nd round I was paired up against a double lash, greater daemon, 6 land raider list. It was all about who went first. 3rd round I played against a 30 harlequin, 30 jetbike, 3 falcon, Eldrad list. Thankfully that one was escalation.

Endzone runs a pretty good tournamet?

Let me recap for everyone just how good this tournament was:

All of my opponents cheated.
Tournament organizer disappeared for 45 minutes.
Players with illegal lists weren't kicked, and in fact, won prizes.
Easy rules questions baffled the judges for 10, 15, 20 minutes.
Standing room only.
Asshat of a store configuration, go to the back to get to the front.
All terrain, even the Mechwarrior terrain that was less than 1/2" high, is "area" terrain.
Single trees placed as "terrain".
Told to arrive at 9:30 am, then told the games won't start till 11am.
Two gaming areas, 50 feet apart, one with judges and one without.
Bring your Forgeworld models and play!
Almost every table had a fun "touch me to spin me" feature.
Track victory points in case of a tie?  Nahhhh.

The only thing I can't fault the store for are the rubbish scenarios.  (Rant incoming.)

GW US wants GW UK to stop making fun of their tournament scene, so they decide to run a 'Ard Boyz' tournament.

Real serious stuff.  Better come prepared.

Scenarios 1 + 2 are scenarios Jervis plays in his basement for fun with 10,000 points of stuff using the Apocalypse rules.  They aren't skillfests, they are luckfests not designed for the basic 40k rules.

GW US doesn't get it--if you want to be "serious", play a Swiss single elimination tournament with Infiltrate, Deep Strike, and a varying 12" deployment zone in EVERY game.

I tried my best to lose all of my games, as I have a invite to the tournament already (wife said I can't go, which is awesome), but in the end Scenario 3 wasn't some luckfest scenario and my opponent was dead first.

Someday, I'll be impressed with a GW run tournament.  No luckfests, no fanboy winners, no dumbasses telling me their way of playing the game is correct...but I've only been to two GT's that even remotely qualified.  2 of 12 attended is pretty lame.

As far as tournaments here in Utah, I run the only ones that are "fun".  Run them as if you were playing, and you'll have happy players.  Run them any other way, and you get posts like this pointing out all of your flaws.

I got to agree with Stelek on most points on this (I'm just not as bitter about it).

Tourney organizers were quite pleasant, but AWOL for long periods with no one able to find them.
Terrain was horrid - but also very inconsistent. The first table I played on had 5 pieces of terrain, while the last had 12. The use of single trees was mind-boggling.
< 10 chairs for upwards of 30 people.
One of the top three placers blatantly cheated the entire tournament (7-9" for every movement, picking up models and placing them back on the table in "slightly" different places, etc), but the lack of oversight allowed him to get to the final table.
Other cheating that got caught was unpunished - and the guy won a random drawing prize after the tourney was over!

I don't really blame the Endzone guys for it though... they probably have never run something that big before and weren't ready for what was to descend on them. Maybe they should have been, but I probably would have done worse.

In spite of the problems, a lot of people still managed to have fun. I played 3 great opponents and had a decent enough time of it myself. Now if the scenarios hadn't been asinine, then things would have been great.
Scen 1 favors assault and/or fast armies.
Scen 2 depends entirely going first. Best I saw was a Minor Loss for anyone going second in that round.
Scen 3 was actually pretty balanced. But Escalation can bone the best of armies at times.

I on the otherhand had a great time.  The missions are meant to 'shake things up' as it were.  From what I have seen, they definatly did that.

You should always take a well rounded army. If you take a static shooting army and think that you can sit back and blow an army off the table for victory points, you are mistaken. Every army should have fast moving  elements.

Scen 2 depends entirely going first. Best I saw was a Minor Loss for anyone going second in that round.

I agree with your here. The person that went first had a huge advantage. Only one or two guys that went last won.

Scen 3 was actually pretty balanced. But Escalation can bone the best of armies at times.
Escalation is part of the game, and you should have planned accordingly.

Actually I went second in the 2nd senario and got a major victory. I don't think it was won so much in who went first as in Deploying as if you were going to go second.

i went second in the second game and wiped them off the table, but I did get to deploy. first after my second 15 man traitor unit he had very little deployment choices. and it only got worse. he ended up with two pockets of tau in each corner with poor line of site to most of my army. wither two turns of shooting then charge. the 45" X13" lines of deployment denial helped.

I didn't ask, I merely got a invite to attend extended my way.  But the higher authority said I better take my ass to a lawyer office if I try and go on a trip without her, so...

I'm not bitter, it just sounds that way.  In a couple days I'll be over it.  Friend of mine that got screwed who is without a doubt one of the nicest guys I've ever known, well...I hope he gets over it.  I think we were there 20 minutes waiting while he unloaded inside the store.

I guess the Grey Knights won't be attending Baltimore. I got a late call today saying I actually placed 4th instead of third. The person who's list was DQ'd that I played in round two and recieved 17 points for they also gave to his first round opponent. (fair is fair) So I went on and played in the winners bracket slugging it out while the list who lost came up in the losers bracket with two massacres. That's the breaks I am just glad my GK's did well for me.  Good luck to my fellow Dakkites who made the cut and Blackmoor good thing you decided to play outside Utah after all.

They sound like they had a raw deal with a poorly run tournament. When
things are hectic, even the slightest thing can throw you off. I'm sure the
scenarios would have played better for them if they didn't have to deal
with a frustrating day.

Or else it's the other way around (bad day at the tables makes the gaming
situation much worse).

So yeah, I'd complain if I had to deal with something like that. And if GW
wants to do this regionals thing again, both the shop and GW should
listen to feedback about how tournaments are run at their selected
"regional" stores.

Question: How were the venues selected anyway?
