Congrats to yakface and new dakka and thanks to migsula

I dont usually make a Project log when im sculpting or painting my tyranids
or other projects but this time everything is quite different.

I have accepted, last year, my most challenging commission work so far,
a very old and hard to get Armourcast Eldar Phantom Titan,
one of the biggest fellas i have ever seen (about 36cm tall) and my job
is to cover him by sculpting details on it since he is
a bit lacking on that area.

One of the main problems is that he is so huge im going
to spend GS like crazy on this, also the resin is full of
big bubbles holes so the cleaning alone will take lots of time.
but im quite exited with this crazy project, it will be a slow project
due to its gigantic dimensions and hard one to pull off right
but i will have lots of fun doing it.

time for pics...
By the end of january of 2007 i received this

Still a WIP pic of both of the fins but added arms and if you notice theres some spikes already on left fin in first 2 bigger bones...
I will take better pictures, with details and all, when these are finished so for now just general pics to show how they look in the overall...

Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful workNavarro!! Your style fits the oldskool titan and organic wraithbone so perfectly.

I have already forwarded this to most of my friends when I saw it for the first time. Be sure to get some pics of the painted one when the painter has worked it ready. Must be an intimidating prospect to face this badboy from the package!!!

ps. Welcome back

Good. God.

Love the heads, love the thorns, love the fact that anyone can actually make one of those old things look like a modern minature.

Indeed, Welcome Back and what a start...

This project is absolutely amazing. From concept to finished green stuff, you are spot on sir. I can't help but appreciate how you're adding to what is already there instead of trying to change things completely. I do feel like the large heart could use something extra. But this could also be accomplished with paint.

Your return is much welcomed...

Thanks mate.
Yes its a very imposing miniature, when i first saw it in real life i was amazed by its huge size, pictures just dont do justice to its scale... now i imagine painter face when he sees the scale and the ton of details i sculpted. :-)

@grey death my first take on it was: its a miniature with a cool design, and just needs some spicing up on detail and position. So i just followed its design lines and made them a bit more eyecatchy. My objective was to enhance the titan by fixing its flaws but also keeping its original shape. I think the final result will be a  old miniature with a modern look but retaining some of the cool oldschool feeling to it. So i try not to fill every bit of surface with GS making a balance of my detail work and original armorcast design.

The heart will have to change, client wants a bieltan rune inside of it.

Thanks guys

This is absolutely stunning, and may possibly the best outlet of the "tentacle" style of sculpting you seem to prefer. By the time this whole thing is finished and painted it will almost assuredly be mind-blowing.

I look forward to following it.

Amazing stuff.

The true test is if you can make that ugly assed wonky head actually work on that lovely converted model. Hands down the worst part of the model and the one spot that I think will require the most work.

The painting will be done by a experienced painter that client ussually works with.

@Symbio Joe Hi there bug brother seen your bigger marines and they look very nice, its always a pleasure to read your critcs mate.

@ Necros long time no see alienids master, GW doesnt needs me they have lots of talent there (specially looking at new models released this year) speaking o GW stuff im starting a new army as soon as i finish this titan...

@yakface again congrats on new dakka work, wish you the best of luck. Yes i do like tentacles and they fit so well with idea of nouveau art/ eldar im trying to sculpt, even if it makes me spend so much GS... lets hope final result is a positive one. I have to be carefull not to fall in the exageration of filling every bit of resin with GS.

@Hellfury I agree with you, the head is always the first thing we look on a model and this one will have to be eyecatchy, even if i kind of like the original resin head i will have to sculpt something special. For me the most challenging part will be the legs since im going to reposition them. This is by far my hardest endurence test work, almost one year on it and still a long way to go.

When i have a bit more time I will check out this new projec/tblogs section of the dakka forums ( great idea and very apreciated) anxious to assimilate all specially the huge migsula thread. ;-)

Don't worry there's some new bugs that will be hatched in a few months, once I get a couple more of my guard models out of the way. Going to invest in a Tyrgon and after that I just need a few more things here and there to get a bunch of the new Apocalypse formations going

What's your next army gonna be?

Good choice i have one trygon (still in box) and its one of the FW finnest moments mate, beautifull model. I  just cant wait to see more spawned alienids.

On Buglands site i opened a new page for my next army, Terminator heavy Death Guard. Its like the spacehulk duel nids Vs termis but on a 40k battlefield.

I uhm, don't suppose there is some trick that makes creating all those georgous vines/tentacles possible for the sculpting impaired? Like simply sacrificing a new born babe, or dipping the GS in the blood of the innocent or something...

I am simply in awe, looking upon mine own hands as one looks upon a crooked and disfigured hooks of meat, unsuited for any craft.

On the titan - gorgeous work Navarro, I remember hearing about this long ago and am loving everything you have done so far.  The entire idea is wonderful, spicing up all that empty armorcast space ...

Best of luck, keep us posted.  I'm off to Buglands to see how the termies are shaping up (my guess?  pure awesome)

I like this and even prefer it to all you Tyranid stuff.

Don't get me wrong, all those pieces are beyond excellence. But the thing I always disliked about tyranid modeling was that everything is supposed to be organic and look natural, which makes modeling a harder task because you are trying to obtain a look that the creature has everything naturally.

I much prefer this because it fits into the Eldar para dime perfectly. Even though their tanks and such are grown rather than constructed, there is a certain artistry about everything that they do. So, in my mind, that makes the modeling that much more impressive that the impressive GS work. I really conveys a character and an artistry to that army, and you can almost imagine that they took their time and their affinity to perfect in creating this titan.

Good stuff.

No termies yet I'm afraid, just one lonely CSM convo i did long ago. The Titan is taking all my attention now, so only after I finish it I will sculpt my own projects.

@Mahu I think I understand what you are saying, the fact Tyranids are all organic makes them predictable and a bit boring in your opinion... while Eldar contrasts between machine and ornamented organic features makes the concept a lot more fresh and interesting.

Personally, nothing beats the pleasure I'm having sculpting Tyranids, its like my litte monster freakshow and i can go really wild with my GS... Mind that I'm also loving to shape my idea of nouveau art/ Eldar armour mix for the titan, but someting is missing, i think with eldar i have to be less wild and have a bit more controll.

As a side note sculpting at this so diferent scale is making me realise that I do need a titan sized creature for my Nids... and since I dislike FW hierophant design i have a big free spot for it in Buglands.

If you guys get me started on talking about nids I will never stop. ^_^

I love what you are doing to this guy! It is absolutely brilliant. The idea of sculpting the vines instead of painting them is great. The only problem I have, and this is really nit-picky is the two bulbs in the rear that have what it looks as two pieces of rectangular tube pressed ito them. Something about those just bugs me and I do not have the verbage to explain why. Maybe if they integrated more with the design, or just did not look so obviously like pressed rectanular tube. I don't know. Either way yoru work is mind-blowing!

Bulbs are like armour small stabelizers, I see what you are saying and this is part of the problem of this project... you spend tons of time and when you end up one part you look back to the other parts hou have done and think... man i can do better than that! hehe I think best thing is let it as is since client happy and i do need to finish off the rest.

Like grey_death said, better talk about it by PM's, but i must confess I will work on my personal stuff for a wile after I finish the titan... its been exausting...

Now on a totally diferent note I have been collecting Infinity miniatures but since I still didnt get the time to work on them I merged the best of two worlds, like my day work as a ilustrator and my minis hobby...
So when i was making a concept for a spaceship I had in my mind the image of a freaky infinity spaceship... so I come up with this:

Its not directly related to titan but its something that im currently working on, concept wise... I would love to sculpt something like that for infinity....

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Is this a Beil-Tan titan, judging from all the thorns?

Not that it truely matters but if so try and get hold of a copy of of the old 1st edition Epic add on Codex Titanicus. In that are the colour schemes and icongraphy for "Hearts Armoured for Battle", the titan legion of the Biel-Tan craftworld. IIRC the only specific icon to add is a heart with thorns wrapped around it in a figure if eight. I think the main colour is bone white, with Dark green trim (similar to how the titan currently is!) - but my memory of this is distant.

I think I have that heart with a vine shaped "8" on a eldar transfer... :S

Now that you mention it i think i need to add something like that on the titan, thanks for the tip.

I'm still making spikes for the vines here... so I'm almost on the verge of getting nuts with this...

Nice Work!
The only thing i dislike (if you can call it that),are the heads on the left shoulder armor. They somewhat break the harmony on the model, but thinking about it, it could also look a bit boring without them. What are those guys supposed to be? Exarchs? Phoenix Lords?
Anyways, my personal favorite are the small writings on the back. Stunning.
And as a total moron with Greenstuff I'm very envious of you skills.

The heads are a tribute to former titan pilot heroes and champions of the past, so by extraordinary deeds they get carved on the titants shoulder... also on that shoulder theres a big "ball" on top, thats a also a tribute to their home planet freaky stuff i know
