With grateful thanks to Mr. Slaaaaaanesh for these pictures of the new VC stuff on display at Warhammer World. Dire Wolves look much better, spear skellies look ace, Konrad ( with the 2 swords) look pretty good, Mannfred on foot looks lik a fat Marlon Brando, distinctly unimpressive. Although I guess " the horror, the horror" could be apt.

Happy Times

Dire Wolves -- Well, I'm liking them, and seeing eevil counts as uses already. And $22 for 10? So so so much better than all the metal 'hounds out now.

Varghulf -- $25 for a 50mm base monster? Not bad I suppose, and nice model.

Vampirfürst -- Damn, I can dig it! My first thought at seeing that armor was CHAOS! but I'm liking everything about that guy except for his little bat buddy. Very cool, and again $12 seems halfway-almost-decent of GeeDub (I expected $15+ for some reason).

Not So Great

Vlad/Manfred/Isabella/Konrad -- Amongst many other unfortunate elements, their weapons are drunkenly ridiculous! Though I do like the Vlad model and can deal with his own OTT leanings, and Konrad's pose is fairly adventurous for a GW sculpt.

KoBK -- Aye, the price is kinda crazy, but hey you can only get one unit of them ever ... (so I hear). But even then, not that impressed.

Ghouls -- Blech. Give me the old metal ghouls with the wonderful musculature anyday. So much conversion possibility in those old metals, had hoped the plastic ghouls would have kept the same idea and just made it easier to work with. But no.

Thanks for the new pics

I think they're slated to become the new "must-have" unit, but right now I'm not a big fan of the Blood Knights. Perhaps I'll like them more when they're not in a case. Or when they get a new color scheme.

And their horses aren't skeletal--so what are they?

Aren't they "nightmares"? Always took those to be spooky evil horses, generally black with some amount of spooky mists about them ...

What is going on with the 'vampirfurst' ?!?

One arm is a wing with 8 'fingers' to support the wing/membrane.

But he won't be getting far by flying as his other arm is wrapped in armour.

Is it the angle and the wing is in fact something else?

The skele's with spears look very cool.

I think that, perhaps, he changing into a bat for, umm, mobility reasons.

Now, what happens to his armor when he's in bat form is beyond me.

The wolves don't look as bad as I originally thought. I'll be picking up some of those. And I am actually liking the half-bat Vampire. I don't know why but he looks really cool to me. Still way better than Vlad and Co. I'm still happy I have the original Vlad.

The Vampires are indeed the fuglyness, exept the new vampirfürst (vampire count if you are more comfortable with it).

Also the ghouls are way too zombie like, I hope the rules will set them a bit apart from their rotten relatives.

I can't see the first picture, is there a picture of the knights from another angle? Are these the new Black knights we saw on the sneak peak at the GW site? If so I would so go for the Bretonian knights and convert (or simply repaint) them to Black knights. Saves you a fortune with decent results. I've done it because the last skeleton knights were too expensive and too ugly.

Corpse cart is the winner with Grave Guard and Skellies, imo. Is it just my 40k warped sight or are they pretty cheap for what you get? Or is it the weak dollar and you can't calculate roughly by currency?

Furst pretty much translates as "Prince", I think he's just a generic Lord type figure.

With regards to Europe :

Quote:
French GW have the release schedule up.

Basically the first wave, including book, plastic kits and other bits are March 8th.

Second wave including varghulf, battalion and blood knights are 22nd March.

A rough translation:

8th March '08:
Army book. 96pp, 20 Euros,
Skeletons box. 10 plastic figures, 20 Euros,
Grave Guard box. 10 plastic figures, 22.50 Euros,
Ghouls box. 10 plastic figures, 20 Euros,
Corpse cart box. 1 plastic model, 22.50 Euros,
Dire Wolves box. 10 plastic figures, 20 Euros,
Mannfred von Carstein mounted. 1 metal model, 22.50 Euros,
Generic vampire 'Aile' (aile means wing - so this will be the one 'mid-transformation' as has been mentioned). 1 metal model blister, 11.50 Euros,
Generic vampire. 1 metal model blister, 11.50 Euros,
Konrad Von Carstein. 1 metal model blister, 11.50 Euros,
Vlad Von Carstein. 1 metal model blister, 11.50 Euros,
Mannfred on foot. 1 metal model blister, 11.50 Euros, *Direct only*
Necromancer 'avec crane' (crane translates as cranium, so i'm guessing it means skull). 1 metal model blister, 11.50 Euros *Direct only*.

22nd March '08
Vampire Counts Battalion. 51 plastic figure box. 80 Euros,
Varghulf. 1 metal figure box. 22.50 Euros,
Blood Knights. 5 metal figure box. 70 Euros
Blood Knight Kastellan. 1 metal figure blister. 15 Euros *Direct only*
Blood Knight Musician. 1 metal figure blister. 15 Euros *Direct only*
Blood Knight Standard Bearer. 1 metal figure blister. 15 Euros *Direct only*
Blood Knight. 1 metal figure blister. 15 Euros *Direct only*

Phew, that took a while!

Speculation on UK prices:

20 Euros = £12
22.50 Euros = £15
11.50 Euros = £8
80 Euros = £50
70 Euros = £40.

From what I understand the vampire with the wing is supposed to be in the process of transforming. I think it's a cool concept and the execution isn't too bad. We'll see how he ranks up but I plan on picking this fig up.

Don't want to be nitpicking, but to translate "Fürst" to prince is misleading because the "Fürst" wasn't the one becoming king ofter this king died (aka the first offspring), these guys are simply called "Prinzen" in german. In the holy roman empire the "Kurfürsten" lead their "Fürstentümer", similar to Silvania in Fantasy. He would be indeed the leader of a clan of vampires then.

70 € for the five Knights would be pretty steep, but well. Thanks for putting them up, reds8n!

I am seriously awaiting this release. I originally was going to go all out for High Elves but with the quality that I am seeing here its going to be a tough choice. Since I am planning on playing 40k at this years GTs it will give me some time to build up a new fantasy list for next year. Now I just hope that the rules are as awesome as the models.

Apparently the female vampire is not Isabella but rather a generic vampire.

My opinions -

1. Skeleton Warriors - look nice, but look like 25mm vice 28mm. Would've been happy to see more 28mm plastic with other races represented. At $22 for 10, I'll pass.

2. Grave Guard - look nice, but so do the current metal ones.

3. Dire Wolves - total gak. I am enormously disappointed with these. Looks like I'll be sticking to my current plastic wolves.

4. Ghouls - again, total gak. I've been looking forward to plastic Ghouls for years only to be let down by GW yet again. Terrible.

5. Corpse Cart - same as Dire Wolves and Ghouls.

6. Zarghulf - fantastic mini. Very pleased.

7. Blood Knights - [sigh] again, total gak. Ridiculously armored, terrible shields, and outrageously priced. Major letdown.

8. Characters - with the exception of Zarghulf, the rest are garbage. The female looks like a basketball player, the "winged vampire" looks dumb as hell, as do the Carsteins.

Looks like my VC project will remain shelved for a few more years. Way to go, GW.

I'm liking the Skellies, both normal and Grave Guard. I find myself thorn with the ghouls: maybe it'll take time to get used to them after Muller's excellent, previous Ghoul sculpts. The Corpse Cart is simply fabulous, and I'll probably get two.

As for the rest, I only like the generic vampire, and even then I'd get his bat-arm off. The rest of the aristocracy of the night is just plain poor - especially Manfred and Konrad. And don't even get me started on the Blood Knights, those have to be the most god-damn awful sculpts I have seen for a looong looong time. I rate them with the worst of warhammer from 4 editions ago.

Overall these new miniatures are a positive thing, specially considering previous skellies and grave guards...Its not all good and if we look to the characters with "put the hands in the air" syndrome we get a bit of cold feet.
Gouls in metal are full of charisma but these do have a lot of convo potential even if heads look a bit to orcish.
I think i will get some stuff just for my convos.

Not extremely good stuff but overall good minis even if some are a bit stinky.

I think the Ghouls only look orcish because someone painted them light green. A pallid flesh look would make them much more in-theme with the army.

I think they're growing on me. But those skellies and the grave guard are really ace.

And that Corpse Cart is beautiful. If I start a VC army, I'll get two, and hope that there's another body for the driver, it looks good for dioramas!

Better pictures now on the ghouls- they aren't spiky, they have pierced themselves with giant pins of bone! Ooookaay... still going to be a pain to rank up.

This paint job makes the dire wolves look 100% better than the scheme on the spearhead box cover. But I don't know if that makes me like the models any more than before.

Why are the Blood Knights that awful 'pale metallic red'? I see that and I think, 'Slaanesh'. It makes rather cool models look the stupid.
Likewise, most of the vamps need better color schemes. The models are pretty cool, for a given value of 'too many re-runs of Underworld ' cool. But those bat-wings on the helmets? Those are gettin' pinned back, you bet. ("Look, I have giant metal gnoblar-ears on my helmet!")

Skellies and Grave Guard are still awesome.

That vampirefurst is screaming for conversion into a 40K Slaanesh lord with jumppack. That mini is awesome. Any guesses about the sculptor's identity, folks?
EDIT: Okay, maybe a Khorne lord with pack. The skeleton underfoot is just too good to remove.

And I'll be stuck thinking of Mannfred as Marlon Branpire from now on. Thanks a lot, reds8n.

The Black Knights won't look so bad with strategic application of clippers to their helmet-wings. It'll less easy to save the foot wights from hugehelmetosis, though.

And I don't care what those hounds cost, the heads are huge, blunt and fuggly. Morley or Morrison for sure. This really blows

The Strigoi is awesome.

Man, those ghouls are bad. I can't believe they let something like that go to plastic. I mean, the moulding tech and all are so expensive- can it really cost that much to hire another sculptor to do them over when the first guy is cleaning out his desk?
