Battle Report Time! My 'nids versus my friends' green tide in a 1.000 point Cityfight slaughter. I had my new peasoup nids, combined with some primed or even unprimed models, and even a couple with my old ice-blue paint scheme which I eventually abandoned (after painting the entire army with it... I've been stripping and repainting ever since). I almost felt ashamed using this haphazard looking force against my buddies awesome, completely painted ork horde... he's been working on his horde for a few years now, and it shows.

The army lists:

Nids:
Hive Tyrant w/ wings, Enhanced Senses and 2x Twin-Linked Devourer

3 Warriors w/ Extended Carapace, Enhanced Senses, 3x Scything Talons, 2x Deathspitter, 1x Barbed Strangler

2x 12 Termagaunts
2x 8 Genestealers with Flesh Hooks
12 Hormagaunts with Toxin Sacs

1 Zoantrophe with Synapse and Warp Blast
1 Carnifex with Twin-Linked Barbed Strangler and Enhanced Senses (and Spinebanks, but I forgot to use them completely)

The Orks, to the best of my knowledge:
1 Mob of nobs, including a waaghbanna, attached Waaghboss with Big Choppa, and a boss with power klaw

1 mob of 20 slugga boyz, including 2 bazzukas and a nob with power klaw
1 mob of 20 shoota boyz, including a boss and 2 big shootas
1 mob of 12 or so grotz
1 mob of 8 stormboyz
3 killa kans with 2 big shootas and one gitburna
1 deffkan with big shoota and gitburna

The mission chosen was Secure and Hold. We decided on using two stratagems, we both chose preliminary bombardment, he took ammo depot and I took demolition charges. We where a little light on terrain (working on that problem), but decided to go ahead with a cityfight game anyway.

The Setup:

We deployed at opposing quarters, I hid one unit of termagaunts in the bunker (since I would have to take and hold it anyways) which you can't see into (yet!). Both armies had serious trouble with the amount of space and where tightly packed:

Boris placed his ammo depot smack dab in the middle building, while I wrote down that my nids would blow up the factory in turn 2. They'd probably hurl a meteor from space on it or something. "I'm from Buenos Aires, and I say kill 'em all!"

We both forgot the preliminary bombardment and then decided that it's for pansies anyways. I had won the roll for first turn, but gentleman that I am, decided to let the orks advance on me first, giving me a chance to get some last-round objective grabbing action on.

TURN 1
The orks did what they always do, and ran forward as fast as they could. The mob of slugga boyz must've had advanced tactics training, because it decided against this tried and true method and instead advanced into the factory, securing the objective. The grots also moved towards the factory. The ork shooting phase was rather uneventful, with I think 5 gaunts getting hammered.

I moved my genestealers and the zoantrophe off the roof, facing the 'thrope off alone against the killa kans (what was I thinking?), and moved the rest of my army forward with some catastrophic fleet of foot results. My shooting phase more than made up for that, though. My carnifex managed to take out the entire boss mob except for 2 with his twin-linked strangler, a truely amazing weapon against ork bosses thanks to the insta-kill rule. My Hive Tyrant fired his 2 twin-linked devourers for a total of 12 shots, and downed four of the boyz in the factory. I now call him John Wayne.

End of turn 1

TURN 2
Turn 2 started with the factory blowing up, which much to my delight also got rid of 7 boyz. Revenge was close at hand, though, as the surviving warboss and banna wava joined the shoota boyz in charging my genestealers through the ruined building in the middle. The stealers killed 5 or so boyz but lost all but one of their numbers.

In my round, the Carnifex unleashed his fearsome barbed strangler at the 9 remaining slugga boyz who had crawled out of the rubble, and killed every single one of them. The Hive Tyrant flew over towards the waaghboss and his lone banna wava and made short work of them, while the hormagaunts leapt into combat and slaughtered the stormboyz hiding behind the middle building. Meanwhile, the termagaunts in the bunker shot up the shoota boyz a little, before the second genestealer mob took vengeance for their killed brethren and ate all but 3 of the poor boyz. Finally, the Zoantrophe blasted the deff dread to kingdom come. As you can see, I managed to capture the precise moment that the dread blew up on film!

End of turn 2

TURN 3
I killed pretty much all but a few of the remaining boyz, while the kans powersawed my tyrant in half. Since Boris only had a couple grots and his kans left, we called it a day. Victory!

Conclusion: This game really showed how lucky dice rolls can make the game. I landed some amazing Barbed Strangler shots that killed off a lot of boyz, while Boris on the other hand constantly struggled wounding even my weakest creatures. The result was pretty much carnage in my favour, but I lost the last 4 games in a row, so it all evens out.

Things I learned: A Carnifex with twin-linked barbed stranglers is really, really brutal against ork boyz. He killed way more than the dakkafex I used last, and the strength 8 shots mean I could dispatch the boss mob with a large, insta-kill template.
Also, the hormagaunts which I considered weaksauce are amazing against orks. With luck, they can get off a 24" charge, pretty much guaranteeing that they get the first attack, and with the larger 3" engagement radius you can pretty much eliminate anything that might hit back, including kill-sniping bosses with powerklaws and other nasty stuff. All in all, a great match, and I leave you guys a couple action shots!

Thanks for writing this up. I lol'ed a few times. The new nid scheme looks a lot better than the old one did. Are they dipped? It looks like they might be. The kans killed the tyrant? I'm suprised that he didn't take any of them down first. I thought with his number of attacks and monstrous creature armor penetration buffs he would have nailed at least one. Oh well.

Nonsense. The Battle Company box is perfect for filling out your ranks of aspect warriors with a large contingent from the Screaming Baldies shrine.

Monstrous Creature armor penetrating buff? I, uh...
And yeah, they're dipped. I was all set on an arctic scheme until I realized that blue looks horrible dipped. I'm a really slow painter, so this way of painting up a horde army is a real lifesaver!

Nice report, I appreciated the pics. Nice different 'nid army, and I've been messing with carni builds with twin stranglers. Not that I play 'nids or intend to :S

But thanks and congrats on the ork stomp.

Your dipping is going well, and the wings look really cool on the Tyrant.

Thanks for posting that report, and great pics. Sorry to see that the Tyrant got cleft in twain!

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Hey a warboss has toughness 5, so your barbed strangler wouldn't have instakilled him. Now a venom cannon, yes, but a barbed strangler has a max str of 8. Nobs will pop, but not the warboss.

But if the rumors on blast templates are true, barbed stranglers will be the best in the new nids. Auto hitting, big templates are pretty gross versus large mobs.

Your 'nids look pretty good. I'm always amazed the results dipping gives. Nice work.

Actualyl while reading the Lexicanum, the Orks apparently are the most successful creatures in the known universe that all the other races live on simply because they outnumber everyone. If then we are to have a war of Ork vs Tyranid, then it's a matter of trying to defeat the Orks who have already won an entire universe in numberswith the Tyranids who have conquered several galaxies with fast regeneration. This however has to deal with more the Ork's ability to Waagh! more then anything else since entire planets have been mopped up with just Waaghs! If it is the entire population of every Ork still living in the present of the 41st millenium, then their Waagh! is significantly increased while Tyranids don't have the advantage of grouping together making more psychic power. Their ability was fast reproduction, creating giant war marches that outmatched that of the imperium's forces. For me I think it's going to be the Orks simply because they can powerball through the Tyranids and their unlimited amounts of repopulations simply because the Tyrnids can't keep up with their regular tricks of the trade agaisnt an entire race that is built on snowballing the enemy with great numbers.
