So Im working on my winged DP (see url in tag) and Ive got a bit of a problem. If I attach both arms, head and sword it will be a nightmare to paint. So Im thinking of painting each part separately and then put the whole thing together. Ive seen others do this so Im guessing it should work ok.

Now, since Ive never done this before Id just like to throw out the question: What should I think of? Is there any stuff I should think of when painting bits separately before putting them together?

*nervous*

Don't paint the parts where they surfaces will be glued and joined. It will create a bond with the paint, and you want to bond to the model.

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

I usually paint pieces separately as I find it easier. One thing that's given me trouble (through my own dumb fault) is mixing a color with another for highlights and not painting everything at the same time. On a Hive Tyrant I overlooked the tail when highlighting, then had a rough time getting it to look when attached. It looked like two separate parts instead of one model. I had to go back and repaint quite a bit to get it to look right.
Outside of that, I find it easier to attach some parts, but I (almost) never put a model completely together before painting it.
Hope that helps.

before you start put it all together without glue to see if it all fits well, file and glue accordingly, if there are gaps that need filling with putty leave space for it during painting the separate parts then glue them in put on the putty, sculpt to the neccessary shape and paint over it the normal way to touch the joint up, hope this helped.
