Anyone know of any good posts/blogs for magnetizing a carnifex?

I'm gonna be getting the new 3 fex pack, 1 will become a tyrgon conversion, the other 2 I'm thinking of having them be magnetized.. like I'd stick a magnet in the "shoulder" hole and on the tip of each weapon arm.. then just paint all the bitz. I'm hoping to be able to do it to the venom cannons, barbed stranglers, tallons and crushing claws.. maybe the heads too

with all those little magnets on the body would it be bad? like would they push or pull against each other and eventually pop off? should I try to stick metal in the holes and just magnets on the arms?

Although I have yet to magnetize a Fex, I have magnetized all my Dreads by ordering from the following site:

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/products.asp?cat=10

I use magnets on both ends, no metal. Just like measuring, check to make sure you have the polarity lined up right 3 times before applying glue once .

/Perhaps you want to build your own but there is a plastic Trygon coming out (At least many strong rumours to that effect)

Hey Necros. A Mate of mine has done this, and more. He attached(with magnets) a set of Wings on his Tyrant.

Best bet is to use the Magnets in a way where you drill a small indentation into the socket, but not too deep, then superglue said Magnet.

BE CAREFUL ABOUT POLARITY!!!

It is really annoying when you go to assemble, and the magnets "Run" away from each other.

They are generally not strong enough to effect other Magnets though.(even side by side-3mm away from each other is the minimum I would suggest though)

As for using 1 Magnet, then an opposing piece of Metal-your Magnet will eventually not hold enough 'charge' to keep your arms/wings from 'drooping' or just falling off. 2 Magnets facing each other is the way to go for a Model.

Hope this helps a bit mate.

I've also seen that using two magnets, to prevent rotation helps a lot.

I agree that using two magnets is the way to go.

I just fully magnetized a Tau Crisis Battlesuit Commander, and it came out nicely.

The magnets I used were only 1/32" thick, so they aren't too obvious or anything. If you can hide the magnet in the body of the model then all the better!

And yeah, check the polarity. I found it easiest to get a black marker and mark on the side of the magnet that WAS NOT getting glued.

Overall i'm real happy with how my Tau Commander came out.

I've used both companies and had no problems with either.

KJM appears to have magnets in smaller sizes than Magcraft (rare-earth-magnets.com).

thanks folks

as far as the plastic tyrgon goes.. I heard the rumor but never saw an indication as to when it will be out. maybe for planetstrike in a year or so? I want one now I have a fun idea for the conversion too, it will be like a fex but instead of making the super long greenstuff tail I want to basically just build a fex without legs and have most of the fex tail part "underground" and try and make it look like it's just busting out. Thinking about adding a couple hormagaunts to the base for show, to look like they're jumping out of the hole too.

Anyway for the magnets I was just wondering if maybe their polarity would make them push or attract each other while their on the model and weaken the glue or something, so eventually the magnets I glue inside will pop off one day when I swap weapons. I have 3 shooty fexes now, so I will probably be doing the 2 new ones as CC fexes, but I wanted to at least be able to swap out for crushing claws.. maybe some different heads or even different top shells. Might also order a set of FW arms with the big giant claws or the wrecking ball..

I have some magnets that I got that GF9 repackaged, prolly more expensive than ordering them but they seem to be the perfect size. So one more pack of them should really be all I need. Or I might just place an order, we'll see

I saw an article where someone did this in detail for a Carnifex, was it Black Gobbo?

Necros, you have PM.

Also, the arm socket magnets in my fexes and tyrants have never popped out. The way I do it is drill out a hole in the socket area with my dremel. I then use a bit of greenstuff to cover the hole with a very thin, flat layer. I then push the magnet into it and into the hole, using the greenstuff as a sort of 'cup' for the magnet, then slap on a layer of glue.

As long as you let the glue and greenstuff dry for a bit before setting up the next fitting, you're fine. I've had the carnifex's now for nearly a year, no problems.

Edit: Apologizing now for the pics. My camera blows and photography isn't one of my hobbies. I guess I should learn how to build a light box soon.

Here's one of my magnetized Carnifexes. Each of the 4 arm sockets on the body has a magnet embedded in it. Each of the "shoulder" sockets on the arms has a magnet in it also. I have 6 Fex'es done this way and the polarity is the same across all of them so that I never have to worry about which arm goes with which body. Note that the same body is used in all 3 pics.

Now we have the two Tyrants that I've done. One is the 3rd edition (winged), the other is the 4th edition. Before anyone asks, yes I shaved off the vents on the 4th ed Tyrant. I also have 3 Carnifex's done that way as well (if anyone wants to see one, post up and I'll snap a pic of one). Same thing here, each arm socket has a magnet embedded in it. The wings attach at the shoulders of the 3rd ed Tyrant. This has made transport and storage SOO much easier than if the wings were permanently attached. It's also probably saved a lot of breakage from happening as well. Plus if they get in the way during a game I can just take em off for a bit.

And since we're on the subject of magnetizing stuff, here's a current edition predator I've done. Both turret options are swappable at anytime as well as the sponson options. I created the extra sponson mount with a bit of plasticard tubing. The last pic of me holding the turret in the air is to show the strength of the magnets. The weapons don't move unless you want them to.

If anyone has any questions on how I did this, feel free to ask or PM. If anyone would like me to do this for them, PM me and we'll work something out. Prices would be VERY reasonable and I'd supply all materials (including magnets). I've also magnetized some Space Marine sergeants so that weapon/jump pack options could be changed on the fly.

Good job. I guess the only thing I haven't liked about magnetizing is how it limits poseability to simple poses. Anything dynamic or showcase just isn't feasible with this method.

Nonetheless, this is a good article. Maybe one of my 6 'fexes will be magnetic.

I magnetized my one Carnifex for a White Dwarf article (US 307). This shows a lot of the placement of the magnets and what I did. I was able to make arms, heads, carapace, and even tail weapons swappable with this.

Hope that helps,
Jeff

I'd definitely have to say magnetizing is purely for functionality. In my mind a showcase model is a one-off model thus magnets aren't needed.

Magnetized attack bikes! Pics if you want em, PM me or just post up here. I've still gotta take the pics if people are interested.

Cool, I'll look for the article. I don't regularly get WD but my store might have one laying around, or someone in my club.

I just got my fexes yesterday. Doing my tyrgon conversion first then I'll do the other fexes. I also gotta wait till I order some magnets

Why cant you pose a magnetized fig? I dont see any problem with that.

Ive bought magnets from http://www.gaussboys.com/ and they were crazy cheap. At least compared to buying in a store here in town.
