YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Uh...

Shining Gold? Drybrush over brown-washed brass and highlight with a soft yellow?

There are any number of ways you can do this. Basically, how did you paint the rest of the model? Something that will tie in with the finished product is the idea.

Ive painted him in my own scheme,
for now you'll have to put up with a discription because mycmera is bust
and even if itworked it sucks

so here it goes
the base colour is a light grey the rim of the shoulders are th same and the inside of the shoulders are a dark blue
im considering wether i should dirty the model up with some wear and tare

Usually yes, you should. A bit of watered down black or black ink let into recesses ('letting' the paint out of the brush is slightly different to painting it on) help light greys a lot - IMO the best way is to start from black and highlight gradually up to a white/fortress grey... A blueish-silver may be better for your eagle - try tinting boltgun metal or silver silver with a bit of deep blue, and make that your last highlight too.

Also, what colour was your basecoat?

A base coat of Black, it may sounds nuts for lighter colours but i prefer it to the white base coat
the blue tint is a good idea, ill have a shot at it n see what i get
thanks,

ill try and get photos asap
ill borrow am ates camera or something

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I pretty much exclusively use black undercoats, but the only army I've ever collected that might have used it was my Space Wolves.

Think about the colour you're going to paint the eyes as you go, unless he's unhelmeted. A yellow, or a green inked yellow/green would compliment gold, but the green may not go so well in the blue/grey context - getting toward muddiness. A cool ice blue or even white would work with a blue/silver/grey eagle. Bright orange would suit either.

Anyway, thinking like this will help you generate your own technique. If you wanted to paint it with 'layers', remember that the 'tone' is different to the individual colours, but is all-important in the end product. All of the GW armies are pretty rigid, stand out schemes, so check them for ideas. In my original marine painting days (12 years ago!) I always had other marine shots out for reference... now I never do. Just a model or two from the rest of the army to make sure the look is uniform.

This is the way I did it on this model.

(yeah I know, thin my paints)

I first used a black undercoat. I can tell you from personal experience with Eldar that white undercoat+gold=ugly.

I then painted on Tin Bitz. I then painted it with gold (Shining I think). I then washed it with Flesh Wash. I finished it out with a thin line highlight of Mithril Silver to the top edges of the gold parts.

In summary the two best tips I can give for metallics are solid black undercoating and a good wash.

Penetrating so many secrets, we cease to believe in the unknowable. But there it sits nevertheless, calmly licking its chops.

If you really want shining gold to shine, I found the best way for me is first I use the foundation paint Iyanden Darksun on the gold area, then I paint the gold over that. Shining Gold always seems to be kind of transparent, so the yellowish foundation color helps hide that and helps the metal in the paint stand out more since the colors are similar.

Anyway after that, for shading you could use any of the brownish washes that they just put out, and for highlights Burnished Gold works real well, but that's also pretty transparent too

I heard chestnut ink used to be a popular wash choice for gold, however I never tried it myself.

My recipe:

Brazen Brass
Homemade wash (brown/black mix to dark brown burnt color + Future Wax/Water)
Heavy drybush Vallejo Old Gold
Homemade wash again (lighter this time)
Drybrush Vallejo Old Gold/Vallejo Gold
Ogryn Flesh Wash along edges of armour only (I used watered down chestnut before...but new wash rocks!)
Drybrush Vallejo Gold

My photo skills aren't very good (my lighting is pretty poor) so this looks a bit washed out...but a general idea;
