Having been a member of dakka for about a year, I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I haven't really noticed the 'Gallery'
until recently. In there, I found this http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery.jsp?gid=7
Does anybody know who did this army? I see the name 'Craig' mention, but that doesn't really tell me that much. I'd be really
interested in learning how he made these, what parts and kits he used and so on.

Craig Gallant of D6G fame. He was a major part of making the brick and mortar Dakka Dakka the success that it was, creating a number of the tables and terrain pieces used there. While I am unsure what he posts under or even if he posts on this forum still, but Russ should be able to fill us with that information.

Great! Hopefully some of them will notice this little thread and chime in.
I've taken a better look at the pictures, and some of the conversions are somewhat obvious; using dwarf warrior bodies combined with 40k weaponry. But some of them
seem to be from the original Squat range. Can anyone confirm this?

i always laughed and made jokes about how lame Squats were and how ANY army could just punt those buggers instead of shooting them. but i gotta say those were done up nicely. i still would NEVER play squats and if they were ever brought back id still laugh. but those looked good lol

They were still around in second edition. Sort of. Second Edition ended before it finished really. They didn't even come out with a Codex: Squats to the best of my knowledge. After that, fluff wise, they became tyranid specs on a thousand different battle barge view screens so that mankind may live. Or something like that. Additionally, they became persona non-grata on the official GW site, and in company meetings. I've even heard stories of someone getting fired for asking about them during a meeting with the high mucky-mucks and grand poobah's when they came over for a company meeting.

I think one reason they disappeared is they were basically just stocky Imperial guard with a little fluff and beards. At that time GW was trying to give each army its own flavor and squats were too similar to I-guard and so didn't warrant any attention.

Sad but true, the Squats were somewhat of a leftover from the ' WHFB goes to Space' image that GW really wanted to get rid of.
They had a seemingly full ruleset in Rogue Trader, and by 2nd edition, they only appeared briefly in 'Codex Imperialis.'
Their wikipedia article (I find the regular wikipedia is suprisingly better that the lexicanum one), http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squats_(Warhammer_40,000)
has a summary of their lore, as well as a detailed explanation of why they were taken out of the game (Or simply put, nom'ed by the 'nids)
Personally I love dwarves. And Squats are literally dwarves in Space. There's no denying that. Their lore reflects it, and though some of their models
were sorta strange (Dwarves biker gangs anyone?), alot of them had things going for them (The entire 'guild'-structure, Living Ancients and others.)
Sadly, GW didn't like what they themselves had done to them, so they got, as previously mentioned, nom'ed by the nids and tossed out of the lore.
If I remember correctly, they're barely mentioned in the fluff as it is these days.
The Demiurg of BFG seemed to be an attempt at reintroducing dwarves in 40k, but it seems that they'll remain as a background race, rather than a major one.

Edit: and after reading http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/219089.page who wouldn't want a huge Squat Land Train on their Imperial side in an
Apocalypse battle?

Wow, I had never seen those before.. I did a squat army as well, all conversions from fantasy dwarves and cadians and a whole host of other stuff. Keep in mind I was GW staff at the time, so it was a bit dangerous to do, but the higher ups kinda laughed at them and thought they were cool. Here is a few shots of them to compare: Gotta say I like how he did his weapon teams better than mine.
http://ca.games-workshop.com/Community/Events_Coverage/GamesDay0506/GrandTournament/GDGT.htm (scroll down a little to the pics of the tourney armies)
Also, I entered a squat in BoLS convert-a-guardsmen contest, but people didnt like the stunties, they preferred amzon chicks (who can blame them)
Right now, they are shelved back in my home town: no way I wanted to risk moving them up here (canadian arctic) but I defintely want to get those FW thudd guns and the digging machine. I'll probbaly replace the basilisk with the twin barrelled FW one as well.

Yeah, some of the old squat models looked outstanding... their Trikes were exceptional, especially allowing for the time period... their exo armor (Squat version of Terminator armor) looking like a freakin hard boiled egg with boots. Though to be fair Marine Dreadnaughts looked like the illegitimate love child of Mr Potatohead and a Roma Tomato.

Matt Varnish; seeing a fully converted Squat army always makes me smile. And are those heavy weapons converted from the old Rapier Laser Destroyers?
I really liked how your army looked all together. Might be there's a tad too much WHFB shining through on some of the models for my taste, but when you see them all together they're great. And that Basilisk has to be inspired by some of the old Epic Squats. Great work!
Breton: can't help but agree with you on the exo-armour... what had they been smoking? If I ever were to convert something similar, I'd go with Craig's modified terminator armour. A bronzed Mr.Potato Head with huge moustache and power axe just doesn't cut it (pun intended).
While some like KingCracker have expressed their opinion about squat armies, I'd like to hear from more of you. How would you feel playing against a converted squat army? What list would be best to field them as? Imperial Guard? Imperial Guard with Grenadiers doctrine (to account for the carapace armour they're wearing in the fluff)? Space Marine scouts like Craig did?
Might be this topic has moved from 'modelling & painting' to discussion. Feel free to move it if this is so.
Now to sit back, and wait for my first few test squats to arrive in the mail. And speaking of mail, I emailed Craig at d6 generation, asking about this army. Hopefully he'll have something to say about it.
