Well.. Dad's Tyranid army is proving to be a lot of fun for my youngest daughter.. she really has enjoyed swiping one or 2 and sticking it in her elder sisters face early in the morning.. lots of shrieking! (one busted model to this point)..

she asked if she could help me do my next couple of models.. so I used her as the "demo model" for how I dip the Tyranids.

I use the Minwax Polyurethane Stain - Antique Walnut for this..

Step One -
Mix the Stain, carefully not getting any on the floor or yourself!

Step Two -
Take model (in this case, a homemade Lictor (all plastic)), primed white with Dark Angel green highlighting

Step Three -
Clip model onto a disc screwed into the end of a pencil

Step Four -
Dip model completely under the level of the stain

Step Five -
Drip Excess Stain back into the container

Step Six -
Rapidly spin the end of the pencil back and forth in a junk trash box with some sort of covering. (This is a LOT of fun when you are 7... )

Step Seven -
hold it up to make sure coverage was complete, then take it off and place on newspaper to dry for 24 hours.

and then when you are done, and complete the bases.. they end up looking a little like this!

Thanks to all who asked how I did this.. and double thanks to the kiddo for helping!

So you just prime white and base white, add color, then let the stain do everything else?

This was done using just GW washes over white primer, with 2 base colors (Space Wolves Grey on the plates, Blood Red on the fleshy bits). Just as easy, less messy, not so shiny, and no worry of hazardous chemical splatter.

man the more I see dipping the more I think I like it. I should give it a go on some Orks and see what happens. makes painting much easier lol

I did this with orks, nids, and marines. Works great for most things. Dreadnoughts and Rhinos, not so much . . .

Not to derail the thread, but I actually like the use of the washes much better than dipping. Its easier to control, and less of an ass ache to set up....not to mention NO MESS!

I tried dipping once, and the mess was horrid, now (for my gaming miniatures) I use washes only.

For those that don't know, GW washes are only one type that are availible, Fanatic Army Painter also produce various washes and so does MIG.

I bought Miniwax polyshade and gave it a try.... i definitely need a darker shade... the printed sample looks decently dark, but it turned out to be like caramel color lol

@ delephont we generally know what washes are. the "dip" method is what some perfer to quickly finish 100 models in 2 days.
They dont need the wash for every color, its just 1 shade of dip and the miniature is good to go.

*edit wow i quoted myself instead of pressing edit button -_-

have you tried dipping with a Matt Wood Varnish? I would imagine that the result wood be a less "offensive" shine.

next weekend im going to paint up some of my stuff, would be keen to try dipping but im concerned about the shine myself.

If "shine" is your problem, go over it with a coat of matt varnish. shine go away quickly.

I have tried the dip in a slightly different fashion. Instead of using a minwax, I have done the ink+floorwax+water method. I like this b/c oyu actually have control over how thin or thick the coloration is, as oppossed to the minwax method where you appear to be kinda stuck with what you buy. Unless there's a way to thin it reliably?
